This is currently the largest Technic crane Lego produce and I think it may be the biggest they have EVER produced. It is really quite demanding to put together, but a few minutes spent sorting your parts pays off hugely. In all, without really pushing myself it took me about four days to assemble - perhaps 20 hours in total. When complete the thing is gorgeous to look at and the intricacy of its moving parts and gears is massively pleasing. There are only two downsides in my opinion. Firstly, for £130 I would have expected the gib turntable to be motorized in some way or at least have some kind of turning mechanism. It doesn't. Secondly the 'L Motor' that comes with this kit is underpowered for what it is asked to do.Extending the gib to its fullest at maximum elevation really seems to put some strain on the motor and it labours audibly. Its sponsons are also motor-driven and will extend and deploy under power. However the 'L-Motor' is too weak to actually lift the whole model as it is supposed to do. This is not really a huge deal in my opinion but it is something to be aware of and there are many mod-instructions out in the wild that show you how to slightly redesign the crane to mount an 'XL-Motor' - which it should have come with in the first place. By all accounts this solves the problem. The only real change I would have preferred was if it had been fitted with proper 'Pneumatic' Lego rather than the modern 'Linear Actuators'. However it is not the end of the world and the newer parts do have their strong points such as sitting happily at any extension, something the pneumatic cylinders did not like at all.At the end of the day a massive, amazingly good Lego kit. In my opinion FAR better value for money than its sibling line-leaders like Orthanc or the Super Stardestroyer. If you like Technic and if you can afford it - BUY this kit before Lego stop selling them.

My last Lego tech purchase was the the Unimog (see my previous review) a couple of years ago.Feeling another (expensive!!)challenge coming on, I bought this in Nov 14.Everything about this model is BIG, the box, the bags of parts and all 6 instruction books.Having looked through the books, it appeared that assembling the main gearbox correctly is critical to it working properly.I therefore decided to take my time and assemble it at a leisurely pace, avoiding mistakes.I didn't time myself, but it probably took me about 30 hrs.The box says it is suitable for 11-16 year olds, I doubt it, must be Danish humour!!I'm 71 , so I should be OK!It all went together well. A lot of the parts were a tight fit,not something I have encountered before. In fact, for a couple of parts, I had to get my pliers out. Perhaps I am loosing my strength But I did wonder if the injection mould tooling is new, or not had much use.Anyway, to save you the suspense, it's finished and it WORKS!!Trying it out for the first time was definitely a heart stopping moment.I am delighted with it, my wife thinks I am hero (especially at my age)!! And I feel quite proud of it.So, all in all, a great building experience resulting in another great model.I would add that it is not cheap, it is not a toy, but an excellent precision representation of a road craneDon't buy it if you have poor eyesight or a weak heart !! and some engineering experience definitely helps.Full marks to the Lego people who designed it.

Very nearly LEGO's largest set, this monster assembly ticks almost all the boxes for an ambitious LEGO assembler or My Own Creation (MOC) designer. It has a very large number of parts to help fill any LEGO MOC designer's parts-bin; it has an involved and lengthy build; the final product is satisfying with a wide arrange of functions. For those who can't bear to dismantle their LEGO models it looks good as part of a collection of assemblies. Apart from one niggle (see below) the instructions are excellent. There are some trivial negatives: As usual for modern LEGO sets the steering is limited in range and doesn't have Ackerman geometry. The wheels have no suspension. And finally - and worst for me - the instructions are printed in low-saturation colours that make it hard for me to distinguish blue and black parts. I have to make sure to ensure good lighting so I use the instructions. This is absolutely typical of all LEGO Technic instructions these days - LEGO seem to have picked a colour scheme and are sticking to it! (Maybe it's meant to make copying harder?)I was aware of those minor downsides before I bought the kit, and went for it anyway - just as soon as I could afford it. I have had great pleasure assembling the model, and I am looking forward to adding to parts to my collection in the near future. If you want a meaty, satisfying LEGO assembly experience then this is a kit to go for.Read full review...

Out of all the Technic sets released thus far, this is the BEST - the biggest, the most playable and has the most number of pieces. I find the mixture of manual control (steering and rotation of the turntable) and motorised outriggers and boom just perfect. I've never really understood the point of having remote control on a Lego set, but it is also possible to convert to fully remote control without too much difficulty. If you realIy like remote controls on your Lego, the Volvo 42030 is another good choice, but it is more expensive than this. I own the fully motorised remote control Excavator 8043, but I would have been happy to just have manual switches for the controls of the turntable and excavator arm/bucket and perhaps only remote control for moving forwards and back. This 42009 has less electronics to go wrong and I just love to see the wonderfully laid out controls for the various functions. There are loads of upgrade ideas. I may be tempted to motorise the crane to move forwards and back, and perhaps change the gearing to make the outriggers move faster. But in reality, this is the speed it moves. In 5 years time, this will be highly priced. Buy it now whilst you can still get it for a good price.

In my many years of building Lego Technic models (yeah I'm an adult but the the ages on the box are just a guideline, it said so in the movie!) I can say with certainty that this model is the best one I have ever made! This model is very impressive when fully extended and as a construction industry professional it's nice to see how accurately Lego have captured the function of all the systems (the only thing missing being a slightly portly driver with questionable magazines). The instructions have been put together in a way that every eventuality is thought of, as is evident at one point where one part you make is solely used to align the steering and is then promptly dismantled and usedelsewhere.Care must betaken during this build as it is easy to make a mistake which can prevent some of the functions, for instance it is easy to install the gears for the outriggers opposing each other (causing 2 to go up and 2 to go down, jamming the mechanism) as it is not 100% clear in the instructions. However most issues are easily remedied and the torque sensitive gears prevent damage to the system if something does jam.All in all, a wonderful set that took me about 10 hours to build. 5 Stars.

This is a massive kit, one of the largest Technic sets to date I believe.I spent aprox. 8 hours over two nights building the model, and there are over 200 pages to the building booklet! Just shows how complex this model is.This is certainly one for the older, more experienced builder or for younger people with supervision.I found it really interesting building the kit and seeing how one motor unit in the moveable crane body controls so many different functions, such as raising and lowering the arm, extending the arm, and extending and lowering the support legs. The manual functions such as moving pistons in the engine when the wheels turn and the way the front and rear two axels turn is cleaver and realistic.I have made a few modifications - for example making the vehicle LHD,and using some extra Power functions parts (lights, and switch) to give my model working lights. I am also considering installing a second motor box and IR receiver so I can drive my model.I was impressed with the quick delivery from Amazon, and even with the tracking showing that my package went for a holiday in Brussels, it still turned up well within time.

as an adult fan of lego technics this is my second model, the first one was the crawler. the build is challenging and it took me a about 15 afternoons to finish as i wanted it to get it absolutely right. i did stumble in three places and had to undo some steps to get it right. once finished it really is big and impressive . it has lots of playability and i intend adding a motor to make it move by remote, at a later date. i was skeptical about its ability to pick up weight, but once i got the direction of the string winding right it could lift upto a maximum of 288g - a full load of all my household keys. the only reservation is that the yellow pieces are of two different shades.otherwise a must have for technics fans.the second model for the kit is equally challenging, although some pieces are left unused. i found the B model has more playability than the crane and has kept it as my main model.

amazing lego kit, this is one of the most complex technic kits that i own, it has amazing functionality, and its far more robust than its mki brother(which i also own) and its huge! Im not a massive fan of the power function technic kits as i think the inclusion of motors increases the price, and as i already own several sets of motors from previous kits its an added expense and it turns a well priced kit into an expensive kit, i prefer to have the option of including motors if i want to, that said this is the first kit where im genuinely sold on the inclusion of the motors, the model would not be anywhere near as impressive if the motors were not part of the build and the end result is worththe money. If i had to find fault with the kit it would be the open engine block underneath the crane jib, i would have preferred a removable cover or atleast something less exposed.

Bought this for my daughters 9th birthday. She was nearly at the end of book 2 when she discovered a piece was on the wrong way and couldn't be corrected so she took it all apart and put it away for a couple of months. Second time round she finished it! It took around 4 or 5 days in total. She needed help on two occasions where it turns out she had put a piece on while the chassis was facing the opposite direction from the diagram; otherwise she did the whole thing by herself. It needs lots of concentration and lots of checking and double checking and measuring but as always with Lego, the instructions were fantastic. When she first turned it on and all the functions worked it was a great moment. Please parents of girls, don't limit your girls' engineering possibilities by sticking with Lego friends - get them into technic !

LEGO, continually taking me back to my youth. This was one of my favourite builds, especially as you build it in 3 stages which for me as a fully grown man with a family was ideal as I only had an hour or 2 in the evenings to get some me time while the little one is in bed and the other half is out dancing or boxing. I would love to build Lego for a living but I suspect that will never happen so the occasional bug build has to satisfy me immensely and this did just that, so intricate sometimes but genius at the same time, really important to get it right first time, I want to make the second vehicle but can't bring myself to dismantle the huge crane that I have on display. I can't recommend it enough.Expensive as always but I enjoyed it more than I expected.

This is the first Lego Technic set I've bought in around 20 years and it exceeded all my expectations. It was really fun and challenging to build and the power functions for the outriggers and the jib are fantastic. I made a couple of mistakes along the way which resulted in the outriggers not lowering because I had installed the beige gears on the cylinders the wrong side so my advice is to pay attention as this seems to be a relatively common mistake. Also I installed the jib too low at first so the gears didn't meet resulting in nothing happening when I tried to extend it using the motor. The attention to detail is unbelievable and the instructions are easy to follow provided you don't rushlike I did sometimes!Overall I definitely recommend it.

This is a fair amount to pay for a Lego model, however it is worth every penny. Though following the step by step guide is fairly straightforward (a very small error can result in a lot of backtracking !!) the mechanics of it are fairly complicated, and the way the various modules fit together, and the overall result, makes the building of it engaging, interesting, captivating, fascinating...etc etc. for a good number of hours. Though as an adult, "playing" with it when it's built isn't quite the same as it would be for a youngster, I could not recommend it any higher for all the grown up boys out there !! I have disassembled, and handed it over to trusted friends to have a go themselves, and the result is always a big grin !!

First venture back into Lego Technic after many years of abstinence and my oh my the principles haven't changed but the product has and for the better. The model is awesome, power functions are amazing. Approximately 14 hours of build time over many sessions and days but oh so worth it. Most children would struggle with the complexity of the build so the upper end of the age bracket is my recommendation, this is definitely adult lego, children and teenagers won't really appreciate the fine engineering that one is designed into it and two the mechanical properties during the build or subsequent operation of the model. Well.done Lego Technic I'm back on board and saving for the next flagship one.Awesome, highly recommend.

Oh dear. Another great Lego Model, Just had to get it. So I bought it. I built it. Had great fun with my children building it. Kicked them off to bed and played till the batteries needed charging. Then went to put it into my display cabinet in my office.....uh-oh.... it was too full to fit this rather big model. Ikea, another cabinet, assembled it. Wouldn't quite fit adjacent to my other cabinet. Re-arranged the office. Added lights to the display cabinet. "Cool" - as they say nowadays. The crane looked rather lonely in its new home so I just had to get the Lego Technic 42043 Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3245.........

I loved building this, I can't fault it, I'm just disappointed that I've finished it, I don't normally make the B model but I think in a month or two I might have the heart to take this one apart and try.Other reviewers have quoted 10 hours building time but I don't like to rush things and it took me much longer, I am an experienced builder and don't go for speed but the enjoyment of the design and build. The expense seems worth it - I can't wait to show my nephews but I'm not sure I'll let them play with it even though its robust enough - its mine (lady in her late 40s)
