LEGO must be feeling the pressure these days, with so many similar, competing products, both from Europe and from Asia. In many cases, they don’t need to worry, since there’s often a pretty big quality gap. A cheaper kit from a brand mimicking LEGO will often tout similar or larger numbers of pieces, but those pieces are often multiple duplicates of basic, smaller pieces. The one thing you gain when choosing LEGO, is that they maintain a certain level of standards that mean that they’re expensive, but generally provide better products. So, what of this particular kit? I, personally, was always a bit put of by LEGO’s Technics range, they always looked too ‘tubie’, made of pipes and bars and often full of gaps.Things have changed a bit (but not completely) since I was a kid, with more specialised panels to fill in those gappy areas. The end result is an improvement, but hasn’t completely got over the ‘Centre Pompidou’ effect (it is in Paris, often compared to a building that’s inside out). This truck can look like someone took the roll cage and removed the body panels in parts, but in the end it is not a bad look. The kit isn’t too challenging a build, and the fact you can also build the racing car from the same parts provides some enduring replay value (providing rebuilding opportunities). The pull back motor, quite an old concept, is actually quite refreshing in a LEGO model and your kids can have fun aiming for the arrival arch from as far away as possible. Obviously, racing ‘against the clock’ is your only option, unless you have an equivalent kits to hand. For me, you can’t really go wrong with a LEGO kit. They’re usually well conceived, solidly built and have a varied selection of parts to be creative with (which is the end goal, in principal, though kits these days encourage following instructions more than going your own way). I like the fact that this one is a racing truck, which is unusual in itself, they could have gone with the racing car as the default model. At the end of the day, this is a LEGO kit and you can be sure that it will thrill and entertain any child that receives it. I’m still quite faithful to the brand (though not entirely), simply because of the points I raise above, and if in doubt between a LEGO kit and a imitation kit, I’d go with the LEGO one.

I have had this on the 'bad weather toys' pile for a while, so a rainy day gave me and my little boys an opportunity to build it whilst giving them something more challenging that Paw Patrol to do with their minds. These toys are worth having just for that. There are a range of these Lego pullback toys, and they are all pretty cool. I have 5 now. The truck is the middle one in the picture, the red one is stock, and the green one didn't come with tracks but works pretty well anyway. In short - once you have built this, you can hack around with it and do other stuff if you want.Once built, the truck travels in a straight line for about 3 metres on a flat surface, survives impacts with radiators etc.without falling apart, and can do simple stunts like little jumps or being dropped downstairs unscathed. It's pretty robust. The usual exemplary Lego quality has slipped in the documentation - the instruction on sticker fitting for the bonnet is wrong, and the curve modelling for the exhaust is lazy. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come. Regardless, it took a small boy about 2 hours to built with encouragement and occasional help and at the end he was very proud of his achievement. Then he took it to pieces to make something else, which is very much what Lego is all about.Far better than TV.Update - he downloaded the optional racing car plans and built the whole thing unassisted. So yes, great for kids, especially during this lockdown thingy.

This is a fine little kit from Lego. With the facility to convert the kit into two different vehicles - a truck or a racing car, this is a really excellent, easily assembled, and very engaging item. A friend has a seven year old son, who is going through the Lego 'rites of passage', and loves cinstructing Lego kits. He loves this one, because the build process, though simple enough, is nonetheless really engrossing, and then the play - incorportaing other kits into the action - is enough to keep him and his mates occupied for hours. Other reviewers have referred to the Lego Technic page in order to convert the kit into the racing car, and also have made mention of the fiddly parts, but to me,that is part of the fun, as far as I'm concerned. Fine kit, good value for money. Viva Lego!

If your kids are into Lego but haven't tried Technic range yet (like mine), this is the set to get. It's small enough and easy to build not to be overwhelming but at the same time delivers lots of fun. The pull back mechanism is brilliant and can be reused in other cars. My 9 year old is already thinking to use it in her Lego Friends campervan! The only thing that could be improved here are the instructions. The box says 2 in 1 and shows two different cars that can be built: monster truck and racing car. Inside the box are only instructions for the truck. There is link to Lego Technic page to look for further instructions.

This is the first Technic set I got for my son who just turned 7. He needed a bit of help building the first set - which there was instructions for. Disappointingly, the second model does not have instruction with it, so you have to go to Lego website/app to download, which is poor as it should be included. However overall for the price it was a great buy as the pullback works brilliantly as it is very solid so even if it hits against doors/walls , it doesn't fall apart. We will definitely be buying more Technic sets.

Such a fab 2 in 1 Lego set. Got this for my daughter as she loves Lego and cars so perfect! She had great fun building it and loves the pull back feature. The only thing we did find was that the instructions for the race car weren’t included in the box, you had to access them on the Lego website, which for us wasn’t a problem but it maybe worth noting this when purchasing if you don’t have internet access. Overall I’d recommend this set as it’s loads of fun and a big thumbs up from my daughter!

Lego continues in its legacy of producing entertaining toys for children and adults, this starter technic is really fun to put together and the fact you get a friction engine included means even more playtime, the instructions are fairly easy to follow though in pack you only get the race trucks, to access the other instructions you will need to use the Lego app/website. A great little set to encourage creativity and play, the only problem we had was losing the the small pieces, hint use bowls

I built the racing truck with my teenage son and we had a few hours of fun putting it together.I liked how the Lego parts came in 3 bags depending on the size of the part.We found steps 38-39 tricky but managed it in the end, I also like that if you scan the code on the front of the booklet you can download an app to your phone that tells you the step by step build instructions for the racing car as well as the truck as only the truck build instructions are contained in the booklet.

This is another nice set from the Technic range and it takes a while to build. I needed to help my seven year old out at places. But he was very very happy to manage it in the end and very impressed with the finished product. Most pieces are special ones, so there is little chance to recycle these for other things in any meaningful way. I think this is a deliberate commercial decision. Shame. Not conducive for children's imagination. Not so good for the planet either.

I really like these smaller technic kits this is third one we have put together, we being me and my son. We have always been big lego fans, and these smaller technic kits are an excellent starting place for the much bigger lego technic kits. This one has the pull back feature and projects the vehicle forward exacly the same as the vehicle type, you also get the small finish line structure.Currently selling around £17.99 which is a bargain.

I found this on the shelf at one of my local big name stores a few days before Christmas. Very surprised to see it locally before the release. I think its so cool that Lego made a truck with a pull back and a small little finish line for added play. My son sets the finish line about ten feet down the hall and tries to get the truck to go through it. Good job on this one.

LEGO Technic Race Truck turnned out to be perfect Birthday gift for my 9 year old. He made the truck with little help from me. It is vibrant in colors, fun activity making it, its fast and pull back racer. The special thing is that it can also be transformed into pull back racer car because its 2 in 1. Its superb in design with Finish Line for racing.

So much thought goes into Lego products that it's hard to criticise. The better ones are like this, where there are two models and a motor, meaning so many more layers of creativity and play. Instructions are always clear and there's always the satisfaction that you can make it into something else after, and you have a motor to power it.

What a great build once again from Lego... The build itself took me around 45 mins start to finish, the instructions were very easy to follow and they are also available on Lego’s website just Incase you misplace them :-)The toy is recommended for years 7 and up and I would agree as some of the build process can be quite fiddly.

Fantastic pull-back truck - i had hoped that we'd have to build the pull-back mechanism ourselves, but having it pre-made obviously made it a quicker and easier build for my daughter. Really impressed at how quick it is, and it travels very true. (It also fits inside the container that goes on the back of the Mack Anthem truck!)
