Lego Technic App-Controlled Top Gear Rally Car (42109)We’ve just completed the Lego Top Gear Rally Car and it turned out to be great to build and fun to use when complete. Once finished you’ll have a real remote control car, complete with a little touch of The Stig (Top Gear) themed livery. Based on what looks like the very sucessful Audi Quattro rally car of the '70's and '80's , it responds and handles well, though this varies depending on whether it’s running on carpets or harder flooring. The car is driven from the back wheels, powered from six batteries (rechargeable batteries may be an idea if it’s going to be used a lot), while there is a small motor to operate the steering at the front. In true Lego fashion the instructions are clear and concise, with 118 steps in total. Whilst this sounds a lot, it's followed logically and due to the type of vehicle and having a lot of small parts, the steps are all short and straightforward. You just need to make sure you complete each step accurately to make sure the whole thing works properly. Don't rush it.Inside the main box, there are various bags containing the pieces roughly arranged by size. Typical of other Lego Technic kits, once you get to know what pieces are in which bags, you can make pretty quick progress – overall it took around 6 hours or so to build, although this was at a slow pace and spread over a few evenings. As with most Lego kits, we really enjoyed seeing it take shape as you progress through each step. This Lego set is rated ages 9 plus – that would seem about right though children at 9 – 10 will probably still need some adult input to make sure they can compete some of the more complex steps accurately. In terms of size, the car is just under 30cm in length so a decent size but still manoeuvrable around the house…. given the nature of it though, I wouldn’t want to ever use it outside.Once it’s built, you need to download the Lego Control Plus App to your phone to drive and control the car. Ours is on an iPhone and seems to work well, being very straightforward to control, although it can take a bit of getting used to. It’s worth noting that you’ll need to get the calibration right before you start. We didn’t at first and the car wouldn’t steer until we’d started again and re-calibrated using the App.It’s thoroughly enjoyable to build and really intuitive to use once you get used to the App / controls! ....5 stars.

Lego has come a long way since I was a kid and the Technic series is amazing. This rally car is very impressive but will require several hours to build. I’m not sure how long it took me and my nephew as we did it over several evenings but it’s usually best not to rush and just follow the excellent instructions.Inside the box you get 4 packets of Lego parts, a box with the electronics, sticker sheet and instruction manual. The instruction manual is very well produced with large colour pictures and is a nice thing on its own. Being Top Gear based there are numerous references to The Stig.As mentioned previously it probably took several hours over a couple of evenings to construct and like all Lego kits the construction part is as much fun as the end result. It’s a good idea for an adult to apply the stickers. Obviously they can be removed and reapplied if they’re not placed correctly but the chances are you will damage them in the process. You’ll need to download the Lego Control+ app to control the car. Once setup (which is straight forward) you can control it by using Gyro mode. This was my preferred mode as you can steer the car by tilting your phone and there are on-screen buttons to change gear. The other mode was awkward to use or at least I found it that way. You have a virtual steering wheel and controls which are quite fiddly to use and I had to keep looking down to see what I was doing. A nice feature is that you can set the gearbox to Auto or Manual. I used Auto as it was easier for me but it’s good that you have an option. The app also gives you a number of virtual tracks but you’ll need a sizeable space to use that on. We didn’t have anywhere suitable at the time but will definitely have to give that a go when we find somewhere.Overall this is a great toy but you have to take the price into consideration. I can see this will appeal to adults as much as kids, I know I certainly enjoyed building and playing with it.

This Lego Technic set is an App-controlled vehicle with the Top Gear show branding featuring the Stig. The box artwork features the built Top Gear rally car racing along a dirt track and features the control +app on a smartphone. The rear has the iconic picture of the stig looking suitably erm....still! There is also pictures of the car displaying its features. There is a large sticker sheet which displays lots of sponsors and details. Love them or hate them they really bring this set to life. The set contains 463 parts at an average of 27p per piece. This set introduces a revolutionary new differential design with two new parts: the 28-tooth angled gear and the differential carrier. Once built, the differential unit remains intact and stable. The build itself is relatively straight forward and is suitable for the recommended age of 9+. 6 AA batteries are required for the powered up hub.The finished model is a nice rendition of a rally car. I was a little worried about how well it would perform but I was surprised with how good it was and easy it is to control. Its a bit bland without the stickers but once applied they really bring the car to life.It requires a smartphone or tablet with the Technic Control app installed. The device will then need to connect with the Powered Up Hub via Bluetooth. Just make sure you've got the appropriate device which may need a frimware update on startup. The car can be controlled by tilting your device or by using your thumbs, one controlling the throttle or gearbox and the other controls the streeing.Overall this is a really good set. Looking at the price per piece though it does seem rather expensive. I think this is due to the powered up system and it does require a suitable smart phone or device to operate it.If you can get it on a discount I would highly recommend it, a nice build, great looking car and it works a treat! Thanks Lego!

I’m at the age where i only care about paying my bills so i was very happy that my sister surprised me with this on my bday. I couldn’t wait to build it and i enjoyed every second definitely cheered me up and broke up the monotony of my 60 hour work week schedule. I love the attention to detail and the construction of this model was methodically thought out; although you could probably add a couple more arrows in the directions to show where pieces snap together i had to do a few double takes to assemble. My only issue is that the app might need some minor adjustments. When shifting gears it will show on the app but physically the car is not accelerating it just maintains the same speed; i tested this using both manual and automatic transmission; this happens sometimes not always. Also the tilt mode for steering only works if you hold your phone perfectly center but even then turning can be tricky. I am using an i-phone, but this may be a firm ware issue. On the other hand i think its incredible that you programmed this car to shift gears and for the most part it physically adjusts speed. I love the extra layer of depth that the app provides with sound, challenges and the ability to drive the car using different modes.

I bought this set because it is different from my other sets, which just sit on my shelf, getting gusty, only to be built, and rarely played with. Now, this has the fun of building it, but more after your done, rewarding you with access, almost like motivation, the app, which allows you to control it. The app works well, and there are different control setups, so you can choose the one you prefer. Only 6 batteries and you can pop some new ones in when they die. The app even has a calibration system, shown as "The Workshop", which calibrates the steering if your vehicle is out of sync. My only real disappointment is that TECHNIC missed out on a great opportunity to make this set the first TECHNIC set to include a Minifigure, which could have been the STIG racer from the show. It would've made this set exclusive, and higher in demand. All in all though, It's a great set.

Built this with the kids,The instructions were fairly straightforward to understand but the age range 9+ on the box, I'm not sure they would be able to understand it without an adult or older sibling. There are a number of spare parts left over, either that or i missed a few out (I'm sure they are spare).Once built the companion app needs to be downloaded to control the car.The app works well, you can use a steering wheel or use the phones sensors like a real steering wheel to control it.Also it has 3 gears or auto mode. The race game is a little hard unless you are using it outside as you have to follow an imaginary course where my living room had walls, the course didnt.Overall a really nice model and took probably about 2.5 to 3 hours to put together. The controls are good and the kids enjoyed it too.

This lego set is very fun to build for both adults and kids! The instructions are very straight forward and easy to follow, took us about 3 hours to fully build and set up the app and car.Inside the box you get the different bags of Lego parts, the electronics needed for the car to run, and a Top Gear sticker sheet and the instruction manual. The added details to this car with the sticker manual is great- lots of smaller details. The app is easy to find on the app store, and quick to download and link to the car. The app has different track races, but would need a large open space in order to actually use this feature (not inside with walls!!)However, it is very pricey, but if you do like Lego and Top Gear, this is a great activity!

I love app controlled cars. Had to add this to my list. It was very easy to assemble all in all around 3-4 hrs (off and on). It wasn’t too fiddly either to put together. A lot of bigger parts. Smaller when compared with the expert builds like the Mustang. Looks great with all the stickers. You just buy the lights too to go with this build. Definitely recommend for enthusiasts out there that live lego builds/Cars and even more the app-controlled ones. I have now 3 of the app controlled ones. I’m an adult but love the Lego experts/app-controlled. They look fab placed on shelves to show off. Gutted that I bought this full price when it was reduced later 2 weeks later. I’d already built and too late to send back.Buy buy buy.

This is the simplest and cheapest way to get hold of the new motors and control box. Buying separately is no where near as cost effective. You get an okay model to go with that as well, with the build being pretty straight forward with very little complexity - steering is present, but that’s it - no suspension or similar. The app is quite good and the support of gyro or button controls is a nice touch - the new motors know how far they’ve activated, taking motor control to a new level in Lego kits - Bluetooth also means good range, at the expense of needing an sapp to support it.

Although this set is controlled by Bluetooth it is relatively small in size and reasonably quick to build so for me over £100 seems quite a high price. However it is great fun particularly as it can be operated and controlled at the same time as other lego Bluetooth set's. My son and I had great time racing this model against the 4 x 4 model. Set the app on two mobile phones and synch one to each model. This allows each model to be controlled at the same time. Battery life is good so don't need to be recharging batteries every 40 minutes unlike other remote control models.

At first glance I expected this to be a difficult build. I also had no 42099 The Extreme 4x4Off Road vehicle. I.build 42099 first. It has double the parts 42109 has. Also I obtained good practice building 42099 first.Building 42109 I realised that most of the interior of the car is.taken up by the battery box.and motors. There are no seats or steering wheel on the car.Was an easy build, just keep your eyes open when it comes to connecting.up the wires and motors. Car runs.well, enjoyed playing with it via bluetooth and.Lego app.Worth buying.

Love this set. As a big fan of Top Gear which I watch with my son who loves LEGO, anything with wheels and Top Gear this has appeal on so many levels. It’s not a performance RC car. Get that straight. It’s slow. But still it’s very fun to drive it around after it’s built. It’s quite suitable for driving it indooors, which is not something cant do with regular RC cars.I don’t do a lot of LEGO builds myself and rarely buy LEGO for myself but I loved this one and vastly enjoyed putting it together and playing around with it after.

27.12.2019

Oh well it takes ages to build, ( a good few hours even with the instructions) but once it’s built and battery in it, it’s really good, could hardly get it to stay still for the pictures ( sorry it won’t let me upload the video) the stickers aren’t 100% but that’s down to me, their is an app you can down load for your phone to be the controller, hence the pictures the tyres are rubber so no flats with nails or glass etc ( last 4 pictures were taken from a different phone as I was controlling it with my phone

A different lego now. It comes with 463pcs and requires just above 2hrs for assembly. The bags are not labelled for mixed reasons as you will need multiple pieces from various bags. A bit misleading I could say. Once assembled it is a nice Bluetooth smart-hub connected 26x14x10cm large motor jewellery (driving or display). I reckon the gyro control via app is the main attraction for kids (slide left in the app for gyro). The challenges within the app are not as successful in my opinion.

This set is by far the best lego technical weve had so far, both our children love the build but it can become mundane for daddy who ends up helping build cats or houses ! This set has been great for a get together task. It's of a good quality and although weve only just started to build it's easy to follow and well suited to the age bracket specified, our 7 year old is managing with adult help. The app has downloaded easily we had no issues with installation and looks easy enough to work .
