Bluetooth at long last comes to Lego technic, and as noted this set needs to be controlled by a tablet or mobile phone after downloading the iOS or Android app. This works fine and as well as forward/backward/steering motion the apps lets you know the angle of the vehicle and speed using the built in gyroscopes and accelerometer's, with several courses to test your driving skills! All this technology is included within the new battery box or control+ hub, together with the two new large motor 3's and one new medium motor 2 (for steering) is the main cost in this relatively pricey toy (with less than 1000 pieces). As noted elsewhere these are all incompatible with the established technic power functions,so best to view as a half-way house between these and mind storms. The question is does Lego need a 3rd motor format? Possibly, as power functions are rather basic and mindstorms too expensive, mainly because of the programmable controller which is no longer needed with a tablet running an app or ad-hoc scratch.So power up/control+ (LPF2) appears to be a decision to allow the motor to be more interactive with feedback (hence the wider cable with extra coppers wires). In this example, the medium motor can relay back how many times it has rotated so can be set to automatically stop, doing away with the need for an expensive server motor when steering. Potentially, there is scope for future expansion for the larger driving motors to be more interactive, depending on what the vehicle encounters, when tired up with say the boost/Wedo2 (LPF2) colour and distance sensor part 88007, e.g. reverse and turn when encounter a dark wall, but currently this would need ad-hoc coding in scratch with boost/Wedo2 add-ons modules (examples available on line) until the official app is expanded and made more generic. Overall, as well as a fun car to drive the main control+ component appears to have lots of future potential with the new motors, which are not available in any other current set. Like all new technology, may wish to wait until the price falls and also to give a chance for all the creative people to share their ideas on-line and in books. Only criticism is why there are now so many different shaped and sized bluetooth hubs for power up/boost?

As built, this is a challenging model with incredible structural strength. As built this is a 4x4 truck that can handle minor off-roading. As built, this is a fun truck! We had wet snow falling the day after I built it and I took it outside. In 1/4" (7mm) or less of heavy wet snow the truck did fine, but once you got in to deeper snow it would stall once the snow built up under the differential. Not very impressive. This is why this is a 4 star model. How to get to 5 star? Below are three changes you need to make, extremely easy if you built it this way outright, if you need to modify it look up on YouTube the 5-minute fix for the 42099 model. This little set of changes does two things,it cuts the speed in half, but it allows you to run in 1.5" (38mm) heavy wet snow and keep going. I drove around for over 20 minutes until I finally pushed my luck and high-centered. 5 Star truck! You just need to do the following three things!Halve you speed, double your power. Thanks to Youtuber: RacingBrickStep 78 - use the tan gear from step 82 not the black oneStep 82 - use the black gear from step 78 not the tan one you already usedStep 159- left side of the picture, there is a black and tan gear, carefully swap them. A short review for what’s ultimately a short build... however... what a great looking model! In summary not a challenging build but there are some interesting technics involved. What you get here however is a fantastic little machine. Certainly not spritely, but a fantastic little crawler. You won’t regret your purchase. I would highly recommend this build for the experienced and less experienced Lego fan alike as both a great build experience (not hard, but enough to entertain) and a great active model. This is a crawler through and through and a lot of fun is to be had building obstacles to scale. There are a lot of stickers to be applied, I nearly didn’t but don’t regret their application as the model does look great,I do wish however Lego would move to printed parts (as with Lambo) as feel this would match the quality brand that ultimately is Lego. Parents of younger build fans should be mindful of both stickers and need for smart devise to control vehicle. In summary a fun build, a great Technic set which will give hours of fun both in build and play. In my humble opinion a classic of the future. Enjoy. Thanks for reading.

I really enjoyed the challenge this lovely product offered. The bags are numbered which I prefer. You only put out the pieces/parts needed for that section.I found the first section required good concentration. It encompassed fitting the gears, motors, connecting cables to the various motors. If not done correctly the 4x4 would not operate.Sections 2 and 3 were more relaxed and a strait forward build.I would recommend buying top quality batteries like Duracell. The reason being that the battery box is placed inside the body. To change batteries, one has to dismantle the carriage part which is behind the drivers cab.Once completed the Lego app is downloaded.Calibration has to take place between the app and the vechicle,this is all explained when the app is opened.Operates beautifully..I would recommend this buy, well worth the money and satisfaction obtained from the completed product.

I got this for my 2 kids, 9 yr old and 4 yr old. My son really just loves to look at cars and trucks so this was a no brainer. My daughter is super into legos and we started to work on this together. My son had fun putting on the sticker decals. Unfortunately, I had to finish the job but it was super fun for the kid in me too. I do think the recommended age is accurate as an older kid would probably want to spend more time with building it. But, being able to then use the app and control and drive it around made it so much fun. The motors are actually strong enough to go over small things which makes this "off road" toy actually work. The app was super easy to use even for my 4 year old,so he still gets to play with it. YAY!I immediately started looking for the other builds in this product line. This is a great toy! As a huge Technic fan, I am very pleased with this model. I had to get my hands on the new Control+ system as soon as possible and am pleasantly surprised. New planetary hubs and stronger, longer CV joint components are going to be game-changers. Modular design means the body is easily removable. Don't be concerned with the price to parts ratio. The Control+ is very robust and adds quite a bit to the play. There are achievements and badges to earn inside the app, which makes it pretty hard to put down. As much as I love the older 9398 4X4 Crawler, I was concerned this model might have some of its shortcomings. I was surprised by the increased speed of this model over the 9398 while maintaining enough torque to handle most of the obstacles I threw at it.If you are a Technic fan, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

The Legos 4 x 4 x-treme off-roader is extreme! It is a challenging Lego set but so much fun putting it together and seeing the final project. It took my 11 year old a lot of time and had help from me, my friends, and his friends to get to the end result. But, that's what made it so much fun. It is so cool that you can use the app on your phone to control the off-roader. I don't think he will want to take this one apart for a very long time. He enjoys it so much. What a great way for your child to do something challenging with his or her mind. I would definitely recommend this Lego set to everyone that wants hours of entertainment. This thing is FREAKING AMAZING! Other than Voltron this is the most gorgeous LEGO vehicle I have ever seen. The bags are numbered, the tires are HUGE and the color combination is awesome! Not to mention the skull prints on the stickers. Very expensive but worth it! It's battery operated which makes it twice as good, the only thing I wish it had is a remote control instead of a phone app to give it a more throwback feel. INCREDIBLE to look at everyday, looks best on a solid black surface. Off road trucks are the best and I would recommend getting more than one cause this truck is going to be a classic in the future. 2019 was the perfect year for this to be introduced to the world.

Lots of fun to build and use, and if you swap the gearing then the climbing ability is improved (search for lego 4x4 crawler upgrade and the 5 minute swap video). The build is very robust and I have used it over various materials. The only annoyance is the app as to swap between the two steering styles you have to swipe right or left, and this is very easily done by accident. Unfortunately, this means that you can be midway through a turn and the app will swap the screen and you have to swap back. This doesn't sound much of a problem, but I found it happened so frequently it was constantly having to stop and switch modes again. If you can get over this then it is lots of fun.

I was really motivated from that tower challenge video, that I went out and got this kit, as well as a FPV camera, and Receiver Monitor. I struggled mostly with trying to manage the cables in segment TWO taking almost FIFTEEN minutes to route them without them popping out, and wanted to give them enough slack as well (bit of a perfectionist trying to get it to look like how it was in the book). I was surprised this kit didn't offer a Model B variant chassis to build with other parts, though not really disappointed since this one turned out great without any of the stickers. Overall it was a great experience building it, and am having a ton of fun with my FPV RC Truck!

This rugged 4 x 4 is powerful with great suspension and brilliant colour scheme. The new Control+ unit and 3 motors significantly affects the price, but well worth it for the smooth control and play value. The Control+ system is sensitive and gives great control over speed and steering, .letting you make it crawl or race. Control+ has a specific memory requirement which will not operate on older mobiles. ( I must confess that I had to upgrade my old mobile for this, but it was well worth it.) Looking forward to more Control+ models in the future, especially the Liebherr excavator coming October 1st.

Built this with my daughter who Is showing a intrest in lego that I’ve built so thought ok get this one and the rally car .The build was ok and no real problems.Only down thing which I found and so did my daughter with both models they just don’t go fast enough for kids .. my daughter loved the app control using the touch screen control . But today’s kids want speed ? So please lego change the gearing so future models go quicker, as my daughter who’s 9 get fed up with it going so slow .. I will look and see if can change the gearing myself for her but most wont and just give up on it..

I Was pleased to learn again how to build a lego car step by step , after a long brake of 25 years. since my first car in the '90 . The set has everything it needs, long build time , lots of new things to learn about direction , suspensions , etc. The set took me 8 hours to fully build it in one go , but it was worth it . The car can be controlled very easy from the phone app . Is like my new pet . It is easy and challenging in the same time with lots of building rewards, and in the end u got a remote car . Was more than what i expected. Great product !
