Positives:- Impressive model inc. full working r/c 4-WD drive-train, working live axle suspension, and 4 wheel steering.- The drive motors are housed on each axle unit, rather like modern trains and electric cars and this lowers the centre of gravity a bit and puts more weight directly onto the wheels. Very stable.- One large steering servo motor is housed centrally and steers both ends.- Doors open and the on/off switch is accessed here. The truck body lifts to access battery box (6 x AA)- Good battery life.- The remote control works well and the system is simple, but effective. Forward / back and left right, as is the usual.- The wheels have Technic axles and 3 pins for extra strength in the wheel hub-axle connection.- "Reasonable" value, you get 1327 parts and a few left over.- Lots of new components too inc. NEW servo motor for the rack / pinion steering.-You also get the remote control gear which is useful and some of the largest wheels currently available. Very responsive remote control.-I thought the instructions were good and it's built as modules, as you might expect, and this works well.- It climbs well and only slippery surfaces defeat it. See online videos for info.- It's relatively durable, a 5 yr old used it under supervision and didn't break it, yet.- The suspension is springy and it works well.Negatives:- A bit slow: but it is crawler, not a dune buggy! (You could change the gearing on the portal gears (web search this term!) - perhaps for more speed?)- Boring alternative "samey" lorry model?- Truck body / shell is a bit flimsy - opportunity for upgrade though if in the mood.- £ per brick some might see this as expensive, depending on when you buy it.Less able builders might need some extra patience or help in places, as usual. Overall, I'd recommend this model- all the family will want a go and it should give a few hours of fun and more

This is a great kit, however has a few downsidesPros:* new motors, including the return-to-centre steering servo motor.* the 'superstructure' (cabin) is easily detachable, so you can build your own one on the existing chassis* great suspension and power reserve - can handle rough terrain (even though it's officially for indoor use only).* very solid and sturdy build (for chassis that is).Cons:* The build is pretty simple - there are no complicated mechanisms or gearboxes - it's all about stepping down the transmission ratio (for torque and climbing power). On the other hand - like any all-terrain vehicle, it must be simple and sturdy.* SLOOOOOOW - it's truly a 'crawler'. There are some ways to make it quicker, with, obviously, losing some of the climbing power.* The steering is one big disappointment* * The included remote does not allow precise steering - it's all-or-nothing, you have to buy a separate different remote for that.* * the steering radius is a joke, even though it has all-wheel steering.** the design of the steering system itself is very inefficient and far from what you see in real cars (this is Technic, isn't it?).* beyond steering and suspension, the only other feature you get are the opening doors. So, unless you're bying it for small kids to play 'big (but slow) truck' indoors or for some serious modding (search YouTube for "Lego 9398 mod")- it's pretty mediocre. 4 stars for potential to become a great base for your own 6-star crawler project.

I am still in the process of completing this product. Just finished the body build as per attached photos. Enjoyed every step tremendously. Lots of satisfaction.Recently started the final stage building the top part fitting onto the lower body. This model is controlled.by infra-red remote controller. It comprises 3 different motors in the build, an infra red scanner.A tip I would like to share is that the remote controller needs to be opened to insert 3x AAA batteries. To open one needs a very small star screwdriver to remove the one screw underneath. The instructions dont mention or refer to the need of the screwdriver. I had to go out and purchase one.I also completed 42099 another 4x4 Extreme Offroader. This one works with blue tooth via the Lego app to be downloaded. A big difference between 9398 and 42099. I recommend both models. They each satisfy and teach a different technique and building experience. An experiment was made to see which of the two would go the furthest. The experiment was not to race them against each other but to discover which had the longest endurance. To view and discover the end result go to U-Tube and search for the video : 9398 versus 42099.You will be surprised which model won.

I've just completed building this lego model - it's been great - there's so much detail in this kit...I recently built the lego digger 8043 and that was all about the gears and the digging mechanism, whereas this one has a more simple mechanical set up but the attention to detail is awesome - for instance, the front end (the grille) has nearly half of 1 instruction booklet dedicated to it - it would have been easy for the lego designers to make one bespoke part that clips on the front and that looks like a grille, but instead it is made up of lots of little pieces.I would say that this set has been more enjoyable to build than the digger and took about the same amount of time...It's not fast in movement, but it is very strong, with 2 drive motors (1 in the front, 1 in the back) and will climb over most obstacles - the range of movement of the chassis is quite something too - each front and back section is independent of the middle section and has a large amount of suspension travel.

I bought the 4x4 lego crawler for my 12 year old son who loves technical lego but who got bored with the usual small items. He was definitely not bored with this taking a total of 10 hours over two days to build it! I didn't see him for most of Christmas Day.He liked the fact that it seemed difficult at first but by following the simple instructions was able to correctly build it. There wasn't anything to dislike about it apparently! He loved the fact that it is remote controlled, albeit moving slowly but has fantastic grip and a fully independent suspension to accommodate quite difficult and high sloping terrain. Cushions on the floor were mastered with ease.It did eventually topple over when the incline was too steep but as it is quite robust (although still lego - so no dropping from a significant height!)it was ok.He's looking forward to helping his brother build the remote controlled Tow Truck!!Read full review...

I bought it from Lego store. What a mistake, should have bought from Amazon because Lego store always sells at full price! It was fun building. Not too complex and not too easy. Be careful to place differentials correctly otherwise it won't run properly. The building process was bit boring because both axles are constructed in same way. This is the first official Lego set with wheeled vehicle which offers fully remote control. The remote has only forward, reverse and off mode. I expected a speed regulator at this price. Due to lack of this, the car always runs at same speed. You cannot freewheel it because of motors. Addition of gearbox would have been better. The model is sturdy. It goes over obstacles without disintegrating. My only concern is longevity of the model. Lego electronics often stop functioning after 6-7 years.

This is a quality set with some interesting pieces for the pro-builder. The instructions are clear and concise, being spread over three books. Loving the new suspension design, the orange detailing and the power functions. This would have got 5 stars if it was not for the following minor gripes: Quite expensive considering the lack of gearbox and pistons (think you are paying for the remote control-ability and 3 motors). The wheels aren't as big as the wheels in 8466 model. Should have stuck to the orange and black livery instead of the white at the rear. These minor gripes aside, definitely recommended - thinking of buy a second one for the orange livery and motors alone.

Not too bad to build, challenging for a youngster but the power functions for the steering and the drive are fun to put together. The vehicle is a little slow but very sturdy and goes over most things in its path - Toy = Very Good.Price? Well....This set is £120 - £150 at a collection of stores and websites, and I live in Switzerland which is a very expensive country. I bought this for CHF150 last November. So, this price on Amazon is a joke......And as for the Ferrari at a grand from the same seller? Stupid prices.Looks like prices have come down in 24 hours - Good :o)

Obviously this kit is pretty expensive. However, it is the best Lego Technic kit I've seen so far. The mechanical details like differential gear boxes and the servo based 4 wheel steering are great. It is faster to assemble than some of the less expensive Lego Technic models like the helicopter which could be regarded as a disadvantage. The killer advantage of this model over models like the helicopter is that the result is great fun to play with as a remote control car rather than something that is basically static and more for looking at.

My 10 yr old son had this for christmas and he and his dad built it a few days after he got it, some parts are complicated but he and his dad had loads of fun building it. It seems very solid and can be driven over lots of things we have built an adventure course for it out of all sorts of things which has given both my oon & Oh hours of fun. It was a bit pricey but happy with it so far, hope lego bring out some more RC models, its been quite educational too as has helped our son learn about suspension and how gears etc. work.

Bought this when it first came out, quite complicated and intricate to build, but builds into a nice heavy duty machine. I added the Lego LED lights set to it and they work well. On another review I noticed someone say "its too slow", it is if you have the drive cogs as on the instructions, but if you swap them over, it goes much faster. Not enamoured with body of it, it really needs a 'monster jam' style body. Looking to get another set to transform them into an 8x4x8 behemoth of an R/C truck. Overall a very nice set though.

It was my sons birthday last week and when he tore off the wrapping paper (which i always tell him not to do) he was so excited and said this was the best birthday ever. he had difficulty but also a lot of fun trying to build it. he also learnt about differentials, steering etc. overall i am really happy with this set but was a bit pricey as was said in another review.

Great piece of lego car, a bit slow but is great fun, it can go above objects etc. Assembly was great fun as always with these things. Definitely think this is not just for younger kids but definitely goes from 16+ and until you care to play with them. So this was a gift from my parents even though I'm closer to 30 than 20 and still enjoying the whole thing!!

BOUGHT THIS FOR MY 10 YEAR OLD SON WHO IS A LEGO FANATIC. HE PESTERED MY LIFE OUT FOR THIS AND WON!!!! HE LOVED BUILDING IT, ALTHOUGH IT IS IN QUITE A FEW PIECES. HE BUILT IT HIMSELF OVER A PERIOD OF 3 DAYS WHICH WE THOUGHT WAS REALLY WELL DONE. QUITE EXPENSIVE BUT WORTH EVERY PENNY.. A MUST FOR ALL LEGO/LEGO TECNIC FANS.

This was a 40th birthday present for my husband - and it has kept him entertained ever since!! Definitely a bargain price too, as it was about £25 cheaper than anywhere else on the web, and the delivery was really quick. Highly recommended for the grown-up lego addicts, as well as for older kids....
