Diggers and site machinery like this have been a stalwart part of the Lego line-up for years and this set, new for 2019, keeps things fairly traditional and is great fun, but without containing any surprises or offering up anything really new. We built the more complex and expensive 42080 ‘forest machine forklift’ a few months back and this ends up being a simpler but relatively equivalent machine, with a fair amount in common. Devoid of the pneumatic power functions of the other set, the mechanics here are much simpler leverage affairs that are easier for younger kids to get their head round, and those kids’ younger brothers to play with, so it’s more young-family-friendly.Instead of wheels, obviously this one has caterpillar tracks, which are the same black click-into-place affairs that appear on a wide variety of Lego sets now, and a set of moving pieces that will be very familiar if you’ve built any other Technics kits from the same range. Despite being branded ‘Brutalis’ on the stickers- which I believe is a made-up name, though I’d be happy to be corrected- the use of Lego’s standard yellows and blacks makes the end result look very much like it ought to have ‘JCB’ or ‘CAT’ stickers on it.At time of writing the small print of the product description says that this is a toy for “10 months - 8 years” which is of course nonsense- though it’s not currently shown in the product photos, the front of the box suggests 10 years plus. The build was nicely challenging, in a good way, for my young daughter who’s slightly below that age but got a fair bit of Lego experience. There were some fiddly bits and some bits where she needed to pay close attention to apply pieces in the right holes, but it was a rewarding build that came with a lot of satisfaction at the end, rather than an upsetting or unworthwhile one. With over eight hundred pieces it’s reasonably good value by Lego standards as well, though not outstanding. As a step-up set for a younger child just getting into Technics, this would be a nice introduction I think. For more experienced kids the lack of surprises or novelty in this particular set compared to others in the range might make it a little disappointing.

A new addition to the Lego Technic range for 2019, this ticks many of the boxes for instant appeal. A satisfyingly big tracked yellow and black piece of plant with all the main moving components that you would expect from a Technic kit. This took a teenager an afternoon to build and was sufficiently challenging to give that satisfaction at the end when the completed tracked loader looked and worked as it should. It has however been taken apart to allow the construction of the second type of vehicle which, however, requires the downloading of online instructions as opposed to the printed version supplied for the highlighted tracked loader.Instructions were very clear and the only negative for some might be the absence of any power/battery operated motor functions. However, their absence undoubtedly helped keep the cost of the kit down and for the fun and satisfaction it gives, this latest Lego Technic represents pretty good value for money. Would suggest 10+ for age is about right unless there is adult supervision for the younger Lego builder but any older builder will I think enjoy this. Easily recommended.

This set is a bit of a throw-back - a classic construction vehicle, and without motor functions. That keeps the cost down and means you get a lot of model for £55. Also it means that it is *relatively* simple to build and with a bit of supervision/help a keen 8 year-old could take it on.It may lack a motor, but it does have plenty of movement:- main arm up and down- grabber open and close- cab rotation- rope winch, with gears- moving caterpillar tracks, of courseThe rope winch is completely overlooked in the product images, but it is rather interesting, with gears to affect the speed it is retracted. The three other mechanisms are all different,so there is definitely some educational value in this set (my wife has NEVER accepted my claims that I buy Technic for educational reasons). It is a good set, and the second model is well worth buying (building instructions are online-only). The reasons not to buy it are: it lacks a motor; or the new Technic cars are more exciting. Horses for courses, as ever.

This is a mid-range build. You get several geared functions (turn drivers cab, wind the tow hook fast or slow with gearing) and the raising and lowering of the scoop. What you don’t get is an engine, closing of the scoop.Once built it looks good with the yellow vibrant against the black. There are nice details with the driving area including opening doors and a control panel. It loses a star as I found the build quite challening - you have to get a lot of rods in exactly the right place and that can be tough on fingers - combine that with putting together the 70(!) track parts and my fingers were not happy at the end.Good to play with, looks smart and some nice features - but a little frustrating in the build

This is, as usual, an excellent quality build from Lego, which is within the middle range for ability, as it has some tricky workings. The set comes with instructions for one build which is the tracked loader, but can also be used to build a tracked dumper. The instructions for the tracked dumper are only available via download from Lego. This set is aimed at kids aged 10 plus, but may be a tricky build for them on their own, unless they are very confident builders. My 15 year old son has done some of the bigger technic builds, so he found this relatively easy to build, but thinks it would be very difficult for a 10 year old on their own. Looks great along with the crane and the big loader.

This is a mid-range Technic kit, suitable for 10 years with help...... 14-15 years without help, depending on previous Lego building experience. It took my son in his late teens about 2 hours and he said it was very straightforward. Being a massive Lego fan, he expected to find it fairly easy but loves the whole construction of Lego such a relaxing pass time that he thoroughly enjoyed it.Once built it looked very impressive and he was really pleased with it. His only negative comment was that the tow-hook at the back was a bit flimsy and didn’t unwind as smoothly as he’d have liked.Note that for the alternative truck build, you need to download the instructions from the Lego website

This moderl shows that Lego still haven't forgotten how to make good technic models. Plenty of functions, polished model with nice details when built, easy to assemble and as usual top quality parts. The downside is that the front 'claw' opening/closing mechanism is linked to the tilt, making it close to inoperable. That said its on the cheap end of the lego technic models and could be upgraded with some additional parts. Also due to its functions it compares well with other current models.

My husband and son are very keen on a Technic Lego and my husband is constantly building something in his spare time.He works in aerospace, so anything that has a mechanical, technically challenging element to it, he loves. This is an excellent set from the Technic range as it’s quite big, compared to some other sets, and it has several different designs that can be assembled from the pack. And my son likes tracked vehicles, so he likes it too.5 stars.

As usually another great set from Lego. Lego Technic is very much mechanical compared with the non Technic Lego sets. You have levers, gears etc to operate moving parts. This contains two mechanical vehicles to build. So you choose build one vehicle then break that vehicle up to then build the next vehicle. It’s not easy to make so its a real great challenge for my 12 year old son.

Happy with the looks of the model, maybe not so much with playability. Even though the claw is not the most logical design (it can't actually pick something from ground level and can't drop it from above into another truck for example), the cabin is very well put together and fun to build, and the set has plenty of interesting parts for own builds at a good price.

What can you say about lego that's not already been said?? It's very well made with no pieces missing as always, it's instructions are easy to follow and once built it looks like the real thing.. Great thing with this set is that there's more than one model to make with the pieces so take your pick.

Recovering from a long illness, this was an idea to help me get out of bed and do something. It's brilliant. Instructions are clear and easy to understand if you have ever made any models or flat pack furniture. It took 2 and a half days to make roughly. It is a good size and well worth every penny

Lego keep creating new and inventive designs for children and adults - this two in one model is straight out of the construction site. Easy to understand instructions for both designs, great fun to build and very satisfying to look at and play with after.

Really good product with awesome working functions that seem easy enough to build yet once operational you really appreciate the design. Second able builds OK but the main build is best without question
