This is a fantastic Lego set for ambitious Technics builders. It’s forward-thinking, challenging and futuristic. The build is full of innovative little links and good ideas to help kids learn some engineering while they build it, and with over a thousand pieces to put together, it’s a good day’s or day-and-a-half’s entertainment just building the thing in the first place. The end result is a chunky, impressive and durable toy (or display piece if you feel a bit more precious about it and you’re not going to be wheeling it around the living room floor for hours!)Sometimes I feel Lego ‘cheats’ a bit with too many special custom pieces (in my day we had to make do with classic 4x2 bricks,if we found a 1x1 we thought it was a luxury etc. etc.). There are a few of these here, mainly to make the outer chassis look like the real Zeux concept vehicle (which it does, a lot, since Volvo met Lego halfway on the design and built a vehicle that looks a lot like Lego!). The most obvious of these is the front loader of course, which is unavoidable. But the core of the build is made out of ‘standard’ Technics pieces and familiar-looking cogs and so on, which is quite gratifying. It also provokes a chat with your kids about autonomous vehicles as well- although depending on your children they might already know more about them than you do! They still seem like sci-fi in 2018 but by the time they’re grown up autonomous vehicles will be a fact of life and maybe even something they could get a career working with, so there’s certainly no harm in thinking about them now!At time of writing we haven’t tried the second build of the 2-in-1 yet, but when we do, if it’s anything that changes our 5-star opinion of this Lego Volvo, I’ll come back and update the review accordingly. Initially I was going to grumble about how the second set of instructions is online-only, but I’ve decided not to. We’ve tried using Lego instructions on a tablet before now (for Lego Boost, which has app-only instructions) and it worked absolutely fine. It could also be argued that it’s a good move environmentally to reduce the paper- although that’s a little tenuous given that this set isn’t biodegradable plastic yet, which is a shame as I’m looking forward to trying that stuff. It’s certainly unusual as Lego sets go, but engineering-minded young teens or pre-teens with some serious Lego skills will get some real kicks out of this, and it also looks good as a centrepiece with pride of place on the “look what I built” shelf. It’s worth coveting.

My Children and myself have loved Lego for quite some time now and I regularly buy Lego for us to build throughout the year and would class myself as an AFOL and my Children as basically just Lego mad. My Husband on the other hand has not been a big fan and I think the years of having stood on one too many bricks around the house had put him off. Everything changed when this set arrived for me to build as my Husband hasn't let me have a look in and has slowly built this himself over several evenings. I think its safe to say that he is now hooked on Technic. This is a whopper of a set and contains 10 parts bags, 4 huge tyres, a bucket, thick instruction manual and a large sticker sheet. We didn't time how long this took my Husband to build and to be fair it probably wouldn't have been an accurate representation with this being his first set that he has built by himself but it did take several hours and there are a lot of complex build parts.Unlike standard Lego the parts bags aren't numbered and so you do need to have multiple bags open at the same time and the space to do so as they are separated into parts types such as connectors.Once built the Concept Wheel Loader is a considerable size and so again you will need somewhere for it to be displayed or stored. This is a 2-in-1 build and so along with the Zeux there is also the option to dismantle and build the second build , Pegax however my Husband hasn't built the second option as yet. There is also a small mapping drone to build alongside each option. The one niggle is the amount of stickers to apply as there are quite a few of them and they can be fiddly to get on straight. I would much prefer printed parts on all the sets we buy and build if I'm honest. With 1167 parts this is a large build and quite complex at parts but my Husband thoroughly enjoyed this and has already been onto his second Technic set so is definitely now hooked.

First, I should declare my interests:1. I am a big fan of Lego Technic, much to my wife's disgust when I shell out over £100 on 'a toy'; my 7 year old son lacks the attention span and diligence to build Technic yet, but he likes to get involved a bit - I have high hopes for him!2. I much prefer Technic versions of real vehicle to concepts and flights of fancy. So, I was a bit unsure of this model at first glance, but it has grown on me as a design. The concept is that it is an autonomous front loader, similar to a self-driving car, so it does away with a driver's cab and has a drone as an extra pair of eyes. There are 1,167 pieces, and no motor functions, so it is quite a compact build. The manual controls are:- raise/lower bucket- raise/lower bucket arm- four-wheel steering- raise/lower chassis- move counterweight back and forthAll of which makes for a satisfying model to play with, and I don't think it would be better if it had incorporated a motor, but it would certainly be more expensive and less compact. It is worth mentioning that there are a LOT of stickers, as you can see from the product images and they do give it a very cool overall look so it is worth the fiddling around with tweezers.I didn't time the build, as I did it on and off over the weekend, as my son's interest waxed and waned, but it was straight-forward with the usual immaculate instructions, and certainly within the range of child Technic fans. The second build is an autonomous dumper truck which I'll wait a while before building. From the box images it looks like its manages to incorporate the stickered pieces without looking like a dog's dinner.Verdict: off the shelf I probably wouldn't have bought this model, but I really like it now that it is built and appreciate the forward-thinking concept. It can't be long before such vehicles are working in remote areas. Another winner from the Technic team.

I am both a dad of 2 boys and an adult Lego fan who has bought most of the large Technic sets of the past 10 years. This set is 1600+ pieces but no power functions. That means unlike the Technic L350F digger from 4 years ago this set has gears and manual winders rather than motors and I think it is better for it. It would be a challenging but satisfying build for a 12+ child. Rather than building a complex gearbox for a single motor each function is separate. This makes the construction logical and understandable from the beginning. This is different to some of the super large sets that spend the first 50 pages building a gearbox. Please see my picture from 50 steps in where the chassis of the digger is already taking shape. It comes in a very large box - bigger than other models in the same price bracket because the shovel and tyres are so large. The pieces are not in numbered bags so step one was categorise into pots (see my picture) and start building using the single manual. The build took me about 7 hours and I enjoyed it. Fully built it looks really good - better than the pictures online suggest and there are some nice hidden details.Once built the functions are:1. 4 wheel steering - which is really light and encourages play2. Adjustable suspension to raise and lower the ride height3. Shovel pitch4. Arm up and down5. Counterweight back and forth.I think it is a superb model and I hope that there are more models without motors in the future.

This is an amazing concept vehicle from the Lego Technic range working in conjunction with Volvo. It is definitely a complicated build, and that should be taken into account. My Lego-mad 8 year old nephew was thrilled with this, but he is a couple of years below the recommended age range, and struggled with the complicated assembly process, needing significant assistance. My sister-in-law has apparently been rather disappointed that her older son has largely outgrown the need for her help when building his Lego (she's a puzzle fiend and regards Lego sets as 3D jigsaws), so this actually worked out quite well for them as a family project. There are 394 steps needed to complete the assembly of the ZEUX loader, with the separate little mapping drone adding a further 9.The completed Wheel Loader has something of the look of a mechanised scorpion about it, and is certainly rugged in appearance. The loader isn't motor powered but does have gears that move the boom and scoop bucket, as well as being accompanied by a model mapping drone. For the 2-in-1 model advertised, this can be rebuilt as a concept hauler known as PEGAX (shown on the lower part of the back of the box). The instructions for the alternative build aren't included in the box, but can be downloaded from the LEGO website.

May I suggest watching either or both, preferably the 4.27minutes video on YouTube over the 2.17minutes clip. Find them by searching LEGO VOLVO ZUEX. The videos explain how the real vehicle was developed by a combination of kids, Lego and Volvo, is this a first? So why a drone? Why an eye? All is explained.PLEASE NOTE this is a big build and several of the bags that contain the components must be opened at the same time. The box opens at the ends. So unlike a lot of Lego models the box cannot be used to house the components whilst building. With over 1100 components, it is unlikely that the build will be completed within one session. It is best to plan your building area (see photo 1).Photo 2 shows Page 240 with the last piece being added before the drone is built, a mere 3 pages.A second model can be built, but the instructions are only available online. The models are not motorised. However, the Zeux has several moving parts.I am 50 a thus can be classed as a AFOL. This for me is a great build. The stickers add the finishing touches to this awesome vehicle.

There are 1,167 pieces in this set spread across 10 bags! There is also 1 manual and a sticker sticker sheet. It was a relatively easy build compared to some other Technic models, but bear in mind that you only get printed instructions for the main vehicle, the Wheel Loader ZEUX. If you want to build the second (the Hauler PEGAX) then you need to go online and download a PDF. Unfortunately, I don't have a way to view these in my build area (a phone is far to small to work from and printing a 243 page full colour book is excessive) so I was unable to review that model. The finished ZEUX is a great vehicle with some ingenious methods of weight distribution. The little drone is a nice touch. As always with Technic sets it would have been nice to have some text explaining the vehicle being built, their real world functions, etc. Also this model would have been perfect if it had been motorised! Overall it is well worth the time and effort to build if Technic is your thing!

This Volco Comcept Wheel Loader is a superb example of Lego at its absolute best. There are 1,167 parts with numerous stickers and the ability to make two completely separate models. The first you can make,by following the excellent - as always - instructions and the second by following online instructions. There is no motor with this Lego but there are several moving parts which make for an authentic looking vehicle. This is not any easy build and the stickers take a great deal of precision and concentration, I find using a tweezers helps with accuracy in getting them spot on. A satisfying project that took up three rainy days of the holidays and created an enormous satisfaction in completion.Bravo Lego once again.

This is a challenging and satisfying build; it took a team family effort with various members of the family picking up the baton. The result is a detailed and authentic model with ridiculously big wheels and a pleasing amount of geared items to turn so that you have movement in the arm and steering. We went wrong a few times whilst building and a high level of concentration and determination is needed. There are a lot of steps. We really enjoyed this as a family and, at current time of writing it’s practically a bargain at a quarter off the rrp. Fantastically designed and lots of fun, this is a great set.

I love this set! And I'm 20. It's a monster of a digger, think young child's large toy digger size, although I'm not sure it is suitable for the younger builder, due to size, internal complexity and the huge amount of the little round connectors. I'm probably and average speed builder, and this thing kept me absorbed for hours. I split it over 4 days, about 2 hours a day, so a wonderful time filler. Would definitely recommend!

Construction toy for “Big Kids”. Very interesting build with full instructions. All features worked and where interesting. Rebuilt parts as Volvo truck to plan downloaded from Lego web site. The kit was missing two items but these were ordered on line and arrived within three days to complete the build. Excellent service from a Lego at no extra charge. Would recommend kit and I consider the kit good value.

This is aimed squarely at the lego fan that never grew up. There's no other reason for creating a toy like this, other than you can. As always, the instructions are clear, the colours are bold and the end product is impressive. Taking inspiration from other companies give Lego a different angle, as they are now building real vehicles to impressive accuracy. Pretending this is for kids is unnecessary !

I paid an acceptable price for this model. I watch the pricing on amazon carefully for Lego technic since it’s the only thing my 14yr old ASD son enjoys playing with. We have a huge collection. My son enjoyed making this and adding it to his collection despite its lack of motorised functions.

Have built the two models have to go on line for second model but you can zoom in and out to get a closer look to where parts go not sure if I like the concept models but the build is good would buy other models but the prices are ridiculous but would recommend

This, so far, has been my biggest challenge with Lego Technics and what a joy it has been. I so look forward to the next one which I think will be the big crane. The pleasure one receives from building these very clever models is wonderful.
