We are lucky to have a wide range or Lego train sets, so occasionally we get everything out to create a massive and intricate train track through our living room. As such a selection of track switches is essential. We never have enough so we've reordered a couple of times. The switches come with four curved rails, one left side switching track and one right side switching track. Now,I can see why a couple of curved rails are included in case you want to run, say a parallel track running into you switch. But what we mostly have a chronic shortage of is straight track pieces - to cover living room distance. So it would have been more useful to include a couple of straight tracks rather than curves that most Lego train enthusiasts have in excess. As always the quality of these Lego sets is very high. And you would say these flat plastic track parts are indestructible- they largely are, however.. The switches have these yellow handles sticking out on top and my wife who was manoeuvring across the tracks through here living room accidently stepped on one which snapped the connection. I managed to glue it back together. It holds for now. And you can even operated the switches without sticking in the yellow handles. But just be aware of this unusual design fragility. My other issue is more conceptual; I would love to operate our progressively complex Lego train tracks electronically; why, in this digital age, aren't there there small/flat wifi/buetooth operated Lego track switch motors? It would massively enhance both the play and educational value further.

I bought the City 7938: Passenger Train set for a Christmas and it's got a fairly limited round track. Even just one set of these will allow you expand the basic layout a bit more. In the end I got this set and the Lego City 7499: Flexible Tracks packThat allowed me to make up a few layouts for that train set.You probably won't need more than the 2 crossover junctions (you get a left and right), 4 curved tracks too so if you pick this up I would suggest getting one pack of the flexible tracks (they work well enough) both of these combined give you quite a bit of design creativity for the train track. There is a valid argument that after buying the train set to start with (far from cheap)it would be better if Lego included a few more tracks straight off..but that's the way it goes. As a set this is pretty good no problems with the quality, it's not hugely expensive either.

Any reasonable train layout needs some points, so these are essential. But with this item (or any Lego) check the Lego WWW site first: as of today (19Oct2011) the Lego WWW price is £15.99.But these points (or switches for North Americans) cannot be put together to make a crossover between parallel tracks without a large gap between the parallel tracks. They should have been designed so that with two right hand or two eft hand points they could be assembled to make a crossover, with the same spacing as the scissors crossover Lego used to make but is now discontinued. Maybe Lego will re-design them with a removable piece of track so that with they can be used as now,and without it they can be joined in a pair to make a crossover.Another minor snag is you always have to buy a pair - one left-hand and one right-hand.

A great addition to any Lego train set, the switching tracks are very sturdy and simple to operate, the set does include an odd combination of track though, given the angle of the switching tracks 2 curved tracks plus two straight tracks would have made far more sense but it seems the tracks are always bundled in fours due to the way they are manufactured. This didn't bother us much as we bought a set of straight and flexible track at the same time (highly recommended) so they worked together very well and gave many possible options.Marked down 1 star due to the odd track combination, other than that they are great and my 7 year old loved the set.

Not opened yet (part of Xmas gift for grandson), but I am very taken with the concept of remote control, the ability to run several trains at once on the same track and flexible curves plus the elimination of the problem of dodgy track contacts that you get with traditional model railway systems. And of course you can integrate it with other Lego models - or build your own.I hope Lego continue to develop new sets in this line, like crossovers, turntables etc (including remote control perhaps?), so one can build ever more complex and interesting layouts.

Had to buy this track pretty quickly after Xmas for my 5 year old son as the track in the big set of Lego High Speed Train is so small its a joke! This helped ease some of our track issues but quickly we saw we needed even more, this time straight bits too, so they are coming tomorrow. Then we have a pause for a bit and just enjoy what we have now! £100 later!

We bought the train but needed more tracks to build different ones. I have bought a few different ones now but there's not as many possibilities as we'd like personally. They are a tiny bit of a faff to put together but then if you have the train or you like trains these are great to buy

Your lego railway is going to be very big...., the left and right switch tracks though open up lots of possibilities and the curved tracks that come in this item help you understand the geometry of the tracks, and how much thought the designers have put into these very sturdy items.

Am buying some more track for my 9 year old (nearly 10) to add to his set from last year. Like other reviewers, I have no idea why bits of plastic cost so much, however, John Lewis currently stock this for £14.99 and you can get free delivery to your local Waitrose store.

This item does exactly what it says on the box! but for a small amount of plastic you are most definitely paying for the name. Other compatible products are much better value especially those laser printed are shipped into the country at a fraction of the cost.

Lego trains are the best ever! The trains an the track are quite expensive but are worth every penny they are hard wearing and the batteries last for ages the remotes are easy to use and the track is easy to put together. Would recomend to anyone!

My Grandson loved it as he already has the streamlined train set and this allowed him to make the rail system more complex. I took part in the building as well. Arrived in perfect condition and was complete and boxed.

If you buy a standard Lego trainset, one of the few drawbacks is that it never seems to have enough track to make a more interesting or more complex layout. This is a perfect addition. It's not cheap, though.

A good addition to our son's train set. He has been able to make it far more interesting with this switching track set. I just think there should have been more track in the train set to start with.

Complements the Passenger train. Now the tracks can be expanded and made more sophisticated. There are also the station and goods train which were presents from the other grandparents.
