Note:Okay so I have read other reviews on here about the Gerber Dime and many people report that their multitool has broken with use. I think perhaps people are forgetting that this NOT a heavy duty piece of equipment - it's a mini lightweight multitool for doing small things, like opening up packaging, cutting string, opning bottles of beer and other minor things.+++++++++Review:I've had my purple Gerber Dime for a month now and I am delighted with it. Just remember it's limitations and it works a treat. I keep mine on my keyring and gets used on a daily basis for all sorts of things. From opening post and packages, to cutting small annoying loose threads on my clothes.Opening up the Dime tools for use,it's quite stiff, but perhaps after months of regular use, it will loosen up a bit.All tools fold away bar the bottle opener at the end of the Dime. It's fixed in place, but it's a very good tool indeed - It gets a good hold of the cap and removes it with ease. Wish the same could be said about my Victorinox Manager. My favourite tool is the dedicated package opener. I'd normally use a regular knife to open up parcels etc, but this package opener works like a charm, and cuts through those annoying plastic heat-sealed packages like a knife through butter. If it can cut through that, it can easily cut through cardboard and paper! Also has a regular knife on the Dime, also great for cutting through packaging and the like. Very sharp, so be careful with it.Scissors are great. Cuts threads easily from clothing, or when I'm sewing. Also breezes though wrapping paper and sticky tape.Th pliers I have not used yet, but they seem durable enough for small jobs. Always handy to keep on your person, you never know when you might need them.Small flathead screwdriver and nail file I have never used yet. Although the nail file seems rather pathetic and too small to do the job intended for it. An afterthough perhaps? Also if you look closely, there is tweezers tucked away in one of the arms of the Dime. It's very flat and compact, you won't notice it was there unless you were actually looking for it. The tweezers work very well, mostly for plucking hairs and removing splinters from my fingers when that happens.Overall a great little multitool, just remeber it's limitations and you'll get along with it like two peas in a pod. I don't know how I managed without it before...it has a million uses and I use mine every single day without fail. I love the metallic purple colour of my Dime and I take great care not to scratch or bash it about. I understand that the colour starts to scratch off with much use and abuse after a while.Overall, great wee tool. Love it so much. Reccomend.

This is a great micro-multitool which disappears into your keys when not being used. The Dime is a really small, lightweight tool which has pretty much everything you'd need in a keyring sized tool. I think a lot of the negative reviews are from people who are expecting this to behave like a full sized tool.Knife - Great, sharp right out of the boxBottle Opener - Works really well, not as awkward as it looks in your pocket!Pliers - Feel solid but very thin. I wouldn't trust them to do anything more than very light work, but they are very precise and can be used as tweezers.Wire cutters - They work well on thin wire, wouldn't try them on anything sturdier.Package Opener - Works really well,I do wish they had put a can opener here instead though, its the only thing this tool's missingFile/Small Driver - As other reviewers have said the file is too smooth for anything other than fingernails or soft wood and one side of it is obscured by the lanyard. the driver works well though and feels sturdy.Flathead driver - Feels as sturdy as a real screwdriver, a bit too wide for smaller flatheads but the other driver works for most of those. Could also be used as a scraper or chisel in a pinch.Scissors - Cuts all the way through, works on fingernails etc and feels solid enough for bigger tasks if needed.Tweezers - Nice to have, but a bit redundant as the pliers work so well as tweezers and are less fiddly.Basically this is all the tools you might need to pull out in your daily life in a miniscule package, you'll forget you're carrying it until you need it. It's asking too much to expect the tools to be as effective as full sized or dedicated ones but with the exception of the pliers its impressively sturdy. One last thing... buy it from amazon US and get it shipped to the UK for half the price!

I recently lent my Gerber Dime to a colleague while we were setting up at a village fete, and he lost it. It's a measure of how much I like this tool that I bought the exact same keychain multi-tool as a replacement. It's a nice, easily-pocketed little multi-tool, which feels solid and well-made and everything is easy to access. It comes with 12 tools (if you count the lanyard ring as a tool)... what makes the tools easy to access is that they're not stiff, and they're all on the outside of the unit, so you never need to open the tool except, of course, to use the spring loaded pliers / wire cutters. The bottle opener is built into the design of the tool so doesn't need to be 'opened'at all.Other tools include a small flat-head screwdriver, which works ok as a 'flat' Philips head screwdriver, and has a coarse file on one side, and a fine file on the other... admittedly the file areas are not really big enough to use seriously. There's a medium head screwdriver, a straight-edge blade, small but usable scissors, and what they call a 'retail package opener' which is a hook-end tool with a small blade at the end and which is very useful... it has pretty much become my 'go to' tool for most uses. Last but not least, examine the body of the tool and you'll spot the pull-out tweezers.I have the red version, but it also comes in green and 'all black'. I have read that with the black version, the tools are tighter and more difficult to access due to the black coating. The blades and tools are non-locking, which means the multi-tool is legal to carry in the UK.

I own several key-chain multi-tools:- Leatherman Squirt PS4, Leatherman Micra,- Gerber Dime, Gerber Dime Travel. Also used and gifted Leatherman Style PS to a colleague. Carried a lot of 1$ metal card Chinese multi-tools. Fixed a lot of eyeglasses, springs, small gadgets etc. So it will be quick and dirty comparison between the two:Gerber is better than PS4:1) Features several torx screws, it can be disassembled and serviced2) Bottle opener is considerably better3) Sheepsfoot blade has double grind (PS4 has chisel grind blade)4) Package opener (no such option on PS4)5) Tweezers (completely lacking on PS4)6) Cheaper than PS4Gerber is worse thank PS4:1) Plyer springs are weaker than Leatherman's2)Anodisation rubs off after multiple opening and closing actions on internal edges3) Flat screwdriver is shorter (less reach)4) Nail file is smaller, has only one profile (PS4 has two)5) Less durable than PS4 (do not try prying with screwdriver)Both require a small holster, if you care about keeping the looks. If you feel that small sheepsfoot blade and package opener are useless, go for Gerber Dime Travel. It features a larger nail file with 2 profiles, "zipper hook" and got rid of "anodisation wearing out" issue while opening and closing. Do not keep these tools in hand luggage during flights. Gerber makes millions on such people)Pick the one you like more judging by external aesthetics or using differences listed above - you never lose!

I purchased this along with a Leatherman PS4 Squirt and I'm glad I did!I usually read lots of reviews on gadgets and thought I'd buy one of each of these little multi-tools to see which I liked best and then give the other away to one of my friends.I don't think any of my friends would be thrilled with receiving the Leatherman. This Gerber Dime, however, is a keeper. I'm a Leatherman fan, having owned the original, the Wave and a Charge XTi so I felt like a traitor when ordering the Dime. One thing that lets it down is the finish, like it's already been in someone else's pocket for a couple of months. The anodising is slightly chipped, the painted on decals look rubbed - and this is straight out of it's blister pack!It feels quite solid, all the tools pull out easily and don't feel like they'll snap but the cutting edges need sharpened. They're very badly finished - again, like someone else has had this before me.The file is utterly useless. Utterly. Gerber should either incorporate a file on the box cutting blade or forget having a file at all.If you want a cheap tool that fits in your pocket, this is worth the money. If you want to spend more money buy the Leatherman Micro, NOT the Squirt.

This is a useful pocket tool that I now carry all the time - it's small and light enough to live in a trouser pocket. It has a good selection of features, and the package-opening blade is unique and very useful. The knife blade is an unusual shape, but works well and is sharp. The pliers are useful for small holding and wire-cutting jobs, but as you would expect would not stand up to heavy use. The scissors are handy to have, although their small size again means that they are useful for small jobs only. The problem is the file-surfaces on either side of the small screwdriver blade - they're useless! I realise the blade is small and would hardly be much use as a file anyway, but it would be nice to be able to file fingernails at least. The way they are made (manufacturing defect?), the grooves are too shallow, meaning that there are flat lands between them, so there are no sharp edges to form the file. They are so "blunt" that they won't even file fingernails, which just glide over the surface with no effect whatsoever. The supplier did offer a refund, but the rest of the tool is so useful that I don't want to lose it, so I'm keeping it and just accepting that there is no file.

Majority (see below) of tools seem pretty good. Knife is solid and agreeably sharp, as is the package opener. Scissors do their job, though perhaps a little stiff to squeeze. The screwdrivers appear solid enough and seem to do their job too.I thought the bottle opener being an external one would annoy me, but it grew on my rather quickly. It's solid, opens bottles and doubles as an extra secure way of attaching to keyrings or the likes.Pliers are another good point here. Strong and sturdy with wire cutters built in. They also serve as excellent tweezers. Quite possibly better than the tweezers that you also get with this. What is irking me right now however is just how hard it is to get the tools out.I've never been good at getting tools out with my nails and generally went to my teeth. That's not happening here. I pretty much need another tool (or keys in this case) just to pull the blighters out. Perhaps they will loosen over time. Also, the file is kind of pathetic. less said about that, the better.Brief summary-Good:- Majority of tools (great knife/package opener/bottle opener/pliers)- Looks attractive- Great size- Feels solidBad:- Stiffness- File

So this product had pretty much all the features you could want in a keychain size tool.Going to start with the negatives. It is fairly cheap steel, the pliers are there for show almost. I tried to move a nut that was fairly stiff and the teeth on the pliers are dented from it. Similarly I tried to use the wire cutters to cut guitar strings and they wouldn't have it, simply put a dent in the strings.I believe the steel on the knife and scissors are better which is good but it is a shame about the pliers.Otherwise this thing is great, the pliers meet perfectly at the tip, you can use it to pull out a hair. The rest of the tools are cool and great conversation starter. A big step up from no name multi tools, but not on the level of leatherman or even victorinox. Also the bottle opener is brilliant, if you have a beer you don't wanna spend ten minutes getting a fiddley tool out of the middle of it, having to open up the pliers etc etc. You want it as quick as possible, and this tool does that.Wouldn't pay full price but if its on a good discount defenately worth a punt.

The only down side to this, is the colored anodized finished gets easily scratched so they should not bother with that. Makes it look tatty. But its been good so far, only used the pliers a few times for light work. Its light, and the blades are sharp. Very useful for packaging and other odds and sods. The small key chain wire link (small mini keyring) should not be trusted however, better to link it to your car key ring etc, via the bottle opener part. The loop failed and the Gerber obviously fell away from my keyring. The actual little protruding mettle loop that the wire link attached too, that's solid, but the hole is too small to actually put your average sized keyring though,so the bottle opener part it has to be. It doesn't really interfere with opening bottles mind you, so don't worry about your keyring getting in the way, its doesn't. Just odd why they didn't just make the protruding mettle loop larger and forget the flimsy wire loop mini keyring silliness altogether.

Had this on my keys for five years now. The paint on the outside of the tool has almost been entirely scraped off, though 5 years of scraping against keys will do that. I quite like the look of them now anyway.Knife has held out remarkably well, especially considering Gerber's love of weak steel. No real damage or chips to the blade and when sharpened it is able to retain an edge for a sufficiently long period of time. This is with light use, which is what you would expect from a tool kept on your keys.Unfortunately the package opener blade has some issues. After about a year of being on my keys the mechanism that stops the knife from opening too far has stopped working. This makes it hard to use as you have to support the thing with a thumb if you wish to use it to cut anything. This has just meant I use the knife instead.Overall a solid multi tool that you can definitely get at least 5 years out of.

This thing is tiny! If you're looking for something discreet to fit in a pocket, this is it. There are smaller and cheaper things out there, sure. This feels sturdy and well made. Can't open any of the tools one handed like i was able to with a previous multi tool i owned, but still very happy with it. Spring loaded scissors and fine pliers are good. Package opener works a treat. Knife blade isn't razor sharp but it's sharp enough for jobs i've used it for. Also NON LOCKING so watch your fingers. Screwdrivers seem to work quite happily. Files are in a bit of an awkward place and proportionate to the size of the tool. I don't tend to use files very often so they aren't a deal breaker for me.Tweezers seem pretty good too. Would happily replace it if lost, if broken, would depend on how i broke it.

Firstly I was surprised by the size of this multi tool it's quite small (I guess this was my fault really).Apart from that it's very solid and I really like having it in my hand, it's a very tactile piece of kit. I originally purchased it as a tool for work to replace my trusted Leatherman which I have had for 10+ years now (still going strong but I would hate to loose it now - hence this purchase). So far this gerber has come in very handy and not failed me I'm any way. For the price it is brilliant and I don't expect it will fault me now in the future - my only reservation was it's size so if your purchasing this please double check as some sellers can be a tad misleading and I'd imagine thatpeople with larger hands than me could find this a little fiddly and more dissapointed.

What a quality little tool. I also have the 'Leatherman P4'. Excellent quality tool. Box opener is soooo handy. I would say a better quality blade than the Leatherman. Bottle opener is just great love it. Dissapointed with the file, it is so small that I would say useless!. Sorry Gerber, but come on, did you try using it? The file on the P4 Leatherman is a full length file and is very workable indeed. Gerber comes with a lifetime guarantee so I am impressed. Love this tool so much that I had a real, quality case, made specially for it by Davidson Leather (davidsonleather.com). So if you are not bothered by the rubbish file you will be very pleased. Pliers are also great as tweezers.Mine is the green and black version, very eye catching indeed. 5 stars. Shame I can't give more.

Normally carry a Victorinox Classic but thought it was a little limited in features so looked for a replacement.Eventually chose this over the Leatherman Style CS, and I'm glad I did.The tool is well made for the price and packs a ton of features.I picked this red/silver version over the black version because the black anodized coating makes the tools a little bit wider and thus more difficult to open.My only gripe is the weight of the tool.It is considerably heavier than the classic, and you really notice when it's on your keychain, which is unfortunate. However I have moved it to a permanent rucksack tool I carry with me, and got a Victorinox Manager for my keychain.Overall great tool, just a little heavy.

I really love my little gerber. It is on my keys all the time and has come in handy on several occasions. I really love the package opener as it has been oddly the most invaluable tool for me so far. This little gerber gets pretty good use several times a week and has not failed me yet. Nail file is a little small and its fiddly on account of where the keyring section is but on a whole this is a super product. Very compact. The colour is fading and it doesnt look shiny and brand new anymore but i didnt buy this to simply look good, i even think i prefer it more now that it has a used look about it.We have a few different gerber items in our family and have never been disappointed with the quality.
