Because there a several variants of the Spirit, let me make it clear that this review is for the Victorinox Spirit XC in a leather belt pouch - the two together carry the code 3.0227.L. It has a single cutting blade, the "combi" unpointed type (unflatteringly labelled a butter knife by some) which is mostly serrated with a short unserrated region at the pivot end.I bought the Spirit directly from Amazon UK and not through a market place seller. I paid around £90 in December 2015 and the item was delivered to France in a couple of days - well done, Amazon!I got this after having carried another Multitool (Gerber Suspension) for a couple of years and finding it so useful having a small tool kit with pliers readily to hand. The Suspension is really good value for money (I paid around £25 if I remember) but doesn't quite cut it for me - the case is poor and the velcro closure unreliable, the Gerber is Chinese and not so "tight" - but it'll be put in the car or the fishing tackle bag and it'll still get plenty of use, I'm sure.I wanted a better engineered tool for every day use and was undecided between a Leatherman or Victorinox. I guess the former are the multitool market leaders and you can find any number of reviews and forum arguments on the merits or otherwise of each of their products. Victorinox are unrivalled in the field of folding knives of varying complexity but, although they've been making multitools for many years, there don't seem to be a slew of reviews out there compared with enormous number comparing different Leatherman models - however, those reviews you do find seem to be unequivocal in their praise for Victorinox's quality of design, engineering and all-round reliability. I'm not sure whether all Victorinox products are Swiss made, but the Spirit certainly is (says so on the blade) - and it shows. Every tool on the Spirit does what it promises and does it well. So, what do you get in the package? There's a very neat leather belt pouch which is tailor made for the Spirit - fits like a glove. It's got a velcro closure - I'd prefer a press stud closure, but we'll have to see how it holds up. The Gerber Suspension nylon pouch had a similar velcro closure and didn't last long, and I replaced it with a Leatherman studded leather one which has performed well. I like the Spirit one so much that I'll replace the velcro with studs if it starts to look as if it might become unreliable. The only other thing in the box is the leaflet Guide_Spirit_X_90179.pdf which you can download from the Victorinox site. I tried to put the link in this review, but Amazon won't allow me to do that.. . .This gives you a guide to every tool on the Spirit as well as some guidance notes, so I won't duplicate the information here other than to replicate the image of the Spirit and the English language key to its functions. Note that you only get the tool and case - to get the add on drivers, bits and whatnot, you need to buy the Spirit Plus.......So, I've only had the Spirit for a week but first impressions are that it is a first class piece of kit. Everything is rock solid, there is absolutely no unexpected play anywhere. Everything meets up exactly, every tool opens and locks into place with precision. The Spirit feels heavier than it looks but I guess that's because it's so sturdily constructed.Good points:-Just about everything. Generally, the tools are really strong and give the impression that they'd be hard to damage. I'd be qote happy to do some serious levering and prying with it. The pliers, while not what I would call needle-nosed, are beautifully constructed and you could just about pluck your eyebrows with them. The awl is a useful general prodder, digger, poker and cutter - works very well for me as the go-to for opening parcels and such rather than breaking out the VERY sharp knife. The chisel is something I've never seen on a tool of this type and I think will be really useful. The screwdrivers are very well formed and worked well in my tests. I love the wire strippers and cutters but I'd haven't used them beyond simple testing. Both wood-saw and metal file/saw are extremely effective. The combi blade is a matter of preference but I like it. Sharpening may or may not be simple - see comments below.........Some caveats:-Don't buy the Spirit if you have weak or bitten-down nails - you need a solid thumbnail to open the blades! The scissors, while very effective, don't open very far and I can't see how you could possibly sharpen them - so I won't be using them fot anything too strenuous unless it was an emergency. You're going to need something besides a simple whetstone or conventional sharpener to deal with the scalloped profile of the blade. There is a pdf on the Victorinox site which covers care of the tools - go to the Victorinox site and navigate to FAQs and HOW DO I RESHARPEN THE BLADE?, then the Swiss Tools link.I didn't find the leaflet particularly helpful so wrote to Victorinox to ask them if they could give me some better instructions. I then received an email from their French agents (I live in France) with the same document in French(!) and that was it - so not much help there............A bit of Googling should give you plenty of info on sharpening these blades.I intend to add to this review when I've had the Spirit a bit longer and can report on its every day performance and also how easy it is to maintain. I've ordered a Lansky Blade Medic which looks as if it'll maintain an edge on the Combi blade - we'll see. But on brief acquaintance, I would thoroughly recommend the Spirit.UPDATE: Well, I've had this for some 3 months now and I continue to be impressed. The tool lives on my belt in its pouch and is in constant use. My worries about the velcro closure on the pouch seem to be unfounded - no sign as yet that it is anything but secure. The Lansky sharpener seems to be the perfect tool for maintaining the serrated blade, but the blade had kept a good edge so has only needed the lightest of occasional touches with the fine ceramic tool. I bought a small bottle of mineral oil intended for chopping board use on Amazon snd this has proved to be a perfect and lubricant for the Spirit - tasteless, odourless and VERY cheap compared with Victorinox's oil.Thoroughly recommended.UPDATE 2I've now had this for 2 years and am still very pleased with the tool. However, the pouch velcro closure has become increasingly unreliable and, having searched Amazon for a suitable replacement, I bought a Leatherman Blast Leather Pouch https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000Q9GG80/ref=cm_sw_r_other_taa_OjMtAb0HDNND1 which turned out to be a snug fit and boasts a strong press-stud fixing.

Well, maybe that's what Victorinox really wants anyway, an entire toolbox in your pocket. This does not fail to deliver. You know the phrase "jack of all trades, master of none" once you own this tool you will forget that phrase. There is nothing that it is short of.Firstly, build quality. When you hold this in your hand you know that it is sturdy. It is a heavy tool and the steel parts are thick and extremely sturdy. You will never feel the tool creak or give under stress. The moving parts also feel extremely sturdy with no give to make sure that all the force you are putting into the handle is coming out of the tool rather than being absorbed by it.The locking mechanism also ensures that the super sharp blade,as well as every other tool, doesn't swing round when you are putting some power into it to chop your arm off.A plus (in my case at least) is that it is a pure metal and easy to clean. I've used it in fire investigations where it was all I really had to carry with me. That it is easy to clean for me means that it reduces transferring dirt and other evidence from one scene to another. The case is made of thick and sturdy leather with a secure Velcro and attaches to your belt so you don't lose it and it doesn't fall out of the case either. For jobs around the house, it is my go-to tool. When I start a job I know that 95% of the time this is all I will need.As for the tools it has: the knife is an absolute razor. You can literally use it to shave, and it hasn't lost it's edge in 2 years. Though it also means you have to keep it away from little hands. The saw is amazing. For 3 inches of blade it can cut through almost anything like it was butter. And it was a heated blade. The file was one of the least used tools, but it does a fine job of even metals. The screwdrivers of course are a little limited in size but will fit 95% of screws. The other 5% can be dealt with using the added corner wrench although being round it doesn't offer much grip. The pliers are powerful and the handle doesn't meet, allowing for that extra clenching power. The hinges between the pliers and handles (as the plier head folds into the handles) never once seemed to give or scare for breaking. It is as well put together as the rest of this tool.As you can understand, there is basically nothing this tool has at fault.Best of all and most importantly, it has a beer bottle opener.A good complaint might be the cost, but consider that it replaces so many tools, and the shed to keep them in. And the complaints from your wife to finally "clean the garage".

Let's get this out of the way first, I have great respect for leatherman tools because of the no argument 25 year warranty and the one handed design, but I have never had a victorinox tool fail me when it really counts. I have returned a few leatherman tools because i have snapped off screwdrivers or broken the pliers, they are good hard steel but when they fail they break rather than bend. I have had the original swiss tool for 18 years and it has been everywhere from my first job at a garden centre through my army basic, it now lives in the house as a convenient beer opener. The swiss tool spirit has been on the radar for a while now and the other half bought me one because she knows i treasure tools over trinkets, what a tool it is. the spirit is both smaller and lighter than the original full size tool with ergonomic curved handles, the overall size is thinner by about 2 or 3 mm, half an inch shorter and lighter. The tools are fitted to the handle, by that I mean that there is some curvature to them so that they naturally fit the handles, this does give the impression that they look weaker but time will tell. The scissors are excellent with a tension bar replacing the bent spring steel that most other victorinox scissors use, The mouth of the cutting edges is a lot smaller than the norm. The pliers are precise and capable of delicate tasks, the wire cutters are fine for light duties (leathermans current offerings win with replaceable cutters). All of the tools are locking and will open individually without clumping from the outside of the tool, my only criticism is that they are not one handed opening like a leatherman wave or surge which allow instant access to blades. The spirit blade is not my cup of tea but there is a straight bladed version (spirit x) which for some reason is significantly more expensive than the regular butter blade design. My tool came with the bit driver not the ratchet (£40 extra is not value for money) i chose this on price alone and have no complaints There is a bent steel insert in the head of the driver to lightly grip standard 1/4 inch bits no problems. I wont use the corkscrew for bottles but it works well for unpicking tight knots of cordage. overall I think that if you want a very well designed tool that is prone to the odd failure and will rust no matter how careful you are with it then Leatherman is good, but if you want a lifelong friend that wont let you down no matter what then Victorinox is the one to go for.

Ok.. This is between us guys...I treated myself to this when I got made redundant, I have a couple of other multitools already..Unbranded one on Amazon and a Yellow & Black make.. I use them for work, just to carry in my bag..I gave my wife the Yellow make one and she was has excited as much as I was when I bought this!!!So with all the makes, why this one.. I guess that's why your reading this...Well firstly lets look at the make.. in my eyes enough said, I have had a couple of pen knives for years, I'm sure if i gave them a clean they would look like the day I got them...So now your thinking well there are a couple of well known multitool companies, that are known for their products..Well do what I done and read the reviews, one lot of customers say its better than the other and vice versa. The reviews just say how its the best make and I'm on me 4th one etc... hang on there why 4th, if so good? This is my first expensive multitool, but I don't want to be replacing it in a couple of years so I based it on my experience with my knives, and a name that we have always known even as a little boy.Th actual multitool itself.. Why do you want it?I wanted it for home, when I go djing in my bag and also on my motorbike or Vespa.. hence getting a ratchet one.Now I don't know if you've every used a cheap one, but we had one at work and when you used the pliers the finish of the handles stuck in ya hand, so basically the pliers were rubbish..You used it once, then didn't bother carrying around...So does more money mean its better?Does it mean it will last longer?Does it mean it's designed to be used?If you put it down at work will it walk? You know what I really think the answer is yes to all the above...One of the things on some other makes reviews said about they bought one that was a snide (another make). So shop around, check who your buying it from... If I remember rightly this was from Victorinox on here.. and I even checked their website before ordering...Did I mention it was cheaper on Amazon and the delivery was quicker than Victorinox's own website...I'm really happy it with, just need to get a job now so I can use it more...

I just received this super tool and I have to say its awesome.I am a multi tool lover having a big range of leatherman and tried a few gerbers over the years. Gerber didn't keep up with the quality and design so unless someone wants a cheap multi tool which doesn't really good for anything I wouldn't recommend them at all.Leatherman is a different story as I said I own a wide range from Micra to Surge and previously I thought they are the king of multi tools but looks like I was wrong?? Don't get me wrong they are great and I still love them but after I received the Swiss tool I think it is a better quality and having better additional tools I am using day by day then any of my other Leatherman.I don't want to write a full review or compare to any of my other tool cause Wave or Surge has its own pros and cons towards the Swiss tool but I think over all this is still a better choice. If I would know how got is this I would probably skip to purchase the Surge and buy this (they are about the same price range). However if anyone thinks this is a heavy tool to carry I suggest to try Leatherman Surge which is about 1 and a half bigger then Swiss tool and heavier too if you add the bits and bit extender to the tool.Unfortunately I have just received the tool today so I haven't really used it for any sort of work yet just tried out bits and bobs on it but it feels a very robust good reliable tool and paring with the Swiss tool life time warranty I shouldn't have any issues either with it later on.Do I recommend it? Absolutely a must if you like multi tools, just a shame I did't buy it earlier.

I have been looking for a new multi-tool for a while. I had a nice Gerber for many years, but snapped the tip off the blade trying to lever something! I looked at the cheap end of the market but couldnt find exactly the right combination of tools. Also the issue of not being able to lock the blades in place ruled out many tools.I finally settled on this Victorinox one. Its got all of the tools I generally need. The scissors are especially good. It wasnt cheap, but I know it will be good quality, unlike some other manufacturers who have very mixed reviews. Its also very pleasant to use, the pliers are great and, unlike the Gerber, I havent crushed my little finger whilst holding the handles to manipulate the pliers. The tools lock into place and there is a small release lever that must be pulled back to release them. This is even better than just a detent that must be overcome to fold the blade/tool in. It does mean two hands to use, but thats not a concern for me.You can use the tools without opening the handles which is logical and is still very comfortable to use in that position. Its also just the right size for my hands which are on the large side. It looks smart too with 'Victorinox' and the shield log inscribed on each side of the handle.I would say that this is an excellent tool to keep with you at all times. The leather case is smart and discreet when hung on your belt. I expect it to last me for years and years!

I have been carrying Victorinox tools all my life (around 10 different types) and all of them are just excellent companions. Victorinox built quality is second-to-none and my full-size Swisstool (reviewed also) has been taken a beating since 1993 and still looks like new! Well to be perfectly honest after cutting throgh many tough nails and wire it now has a tiny dent on the hard-wire cutters. That's why I didn't think twice when I was looking for a lighter, smaller version of it - this model of the Swisstool Spirit (Product No. 3.0.224) is my favourite - I prefer the smooth drop-point blade shape and the scissors over any other models. All tools are lockable and accessible from the outside of the tool. This design provides maximum room for the individual tools hence they are larger than those on most competitor tools of this size. The plier head is the same size as the one on my full-size Swisstool, and overall the tool feels just as sturdy as it's big brother. The sheath is similar to that of my full-size Swisstool as well, however (possibly to save cost), the Victorinox logo is now riveted through the velcro that holds the flap down, which means that there is less velcro surface available.Only time will tell, but I am confident that the Swisstool Spirit won't ever fail and function just as brilliantly as all my other Victorinox tools.BYING TIP:I bought mine from Amazon.de for EUR63.

We used one of these tools on our recent round the world motorcycle trip and itperformed so well it exceeded all our expectations. Apart from having all the tools needed for those 'On the go' maintenance tasks it also helps around the campsite and motel room. The precision of the Swisstool Spirit Plus means it doesnt get jammed up with debris and muck and always performs in the way it was designed, fautlesly. The Hex Tool and bits are surprisingly very strong and it makes the tool very easy to personalise to your specific needs. We used the Hex Tool for tightening, removing and replacing the motorcycles plastic covers and adjusting levers and handlebar controls etc.It was also very useful for the litle hard to get to service points. The additional benefit of the leather pouch means that when you need the tool quickly you can grab it knowing that everything you expect to be there is there. Although we never tried to hang the tool off a belt which it will do of course, you may find it heavy. Around the home it will serve you just as well and can be personalised to suit. In our opinion we have found the tool to be the best of all the others we have tried over the years and expect to get many years of reliable service from it. If you only buy one multi tool buy this one.

The victorinox, Swiss tool, spirit ! At the time of my buying this the spirit has already been in production for an age so there is plenty of information about it out there, videos are plentiful. The quality of this is unsurprising from victorinox, we have come to expect it as given, and given it is !All of the tools are useful in some way and all are proper v,nox quality. There is one detail i want to express about the blade. It's the semi-serated, blunt ended blade and I can confirm that it's an excellent blade BUT A WORD OF WARNING......forgive me for this please.....The blade is sharp like a cutthroat ! ......that's it, my word of warning.I have had, and I do have, other knives and I believe that a clean sharp blade is safer than a dull one but this blade arrived sharper than I have ever needed and I was actually a bit fearful of it. There's sharp and then there's sharp right ! WATCH OUT OK, I'm just saying because it surprised me, I needed a General purpose blade not a close shave.

Great quality, one strange thing...it does not have a traditional pointed knife blade - I guess the Swiss remain neutral ;)..just some (fairly sharp)serrated butter spreader, at first I wanted to send it back for that reason but in the end decided to keep ( as I own several other multi-tools) Good quality steel, although the tool not as comfortable to use as leatherman, somehow it feels awkwardly shaped (or is it just me using the leathermans for last 20 years :), very clever mini ratchet bit driver..not sure why the traditional knife blade was dropped from the design, for me it is a show-stopper, but if you are happy not to have a knife, go for it. One weak point: Blades locking mechanism a bit fiddly, far less intuitive than leatherman's - I don't think you would be able to slide it with greasy or cold hands, overall leatherman wave feels beefier and sits better in my hand but it may be subjective. Quality leather pouch.

I can't remember when I bought mine, but it must be the best part of a decade ago. I use it regularly in all sorts of situations - expeditions, camping trips, around the home, you name it - it works every time and it's damn near indestructible. I could probably wax lyrical about it all day long, but a couple of my favourite points are the combination of precision and power you can get from the pliers, ditto the scissors and the reamer/spike thing. Even the Philips screwdriver, despite seeming pretty chunky, manages to grip onto fairly small Philips screwheads without fuss or problems. Only one thing: mind you're careful with the wood saw, it's bloody lethal.I've just bought some Victorinox multi-tool oil (also reviewed here on Amazon)and their small knife sharpener - now it's ready to do another decade. And probably another few beyond that.

Updated review after some use and upgraded from 3 to 4 stars. The steel is not highly polished, like surgical instruments. The one I received is rather dull. The wire cutters on the pliers' jaws have such little area that can cut, making them almost useless. All the tools lock, which is great and it is comfortable to hold. It is also quite compact, making it easy to travel with. After using this for some time now I am getting to like it more. The tools do work well and some work better than Leatherman Wave and Surge tools. The Wave and Surge have more uses and are more versatile. However, with the ratchet set, the Swiss tool becomes better and even more versatile. Like it more, the more I use it.

I bought my one as a gift for my father so I won't be using it myself, had a quick look to make sure everything is working and as expected from company that been making them for 125 years it's perfect.I think Victorinox put little bit too much oil on this tool, pliers were nearly dribbling oil but that's a minor issue, I've easily wiped excess oil so no problem.I was lucky I bought my one cheap, soon as I bought it price went up by 20£, I've also ordered swisstool X and price went up by nearly 50%!!I can't comment much about the tool as I just bought it + It's a gift but I'm sure it will last a very long time as expected from Victorinox. My one arrived very fast, very safely packaged.

shocking quality from victorinox here. a work of art, a symbol of great craftmanship, a thing of beauty. I struggle to describe the spirit and can not say a bad word about it. spring locks in place all tools, the rounded edge blade is safe, clean and looks marvelous. the wire cutters are lovely, the bit drivers clean and concise, even the leather pouch is beautiful. smaller than the other swiss tools but cleverly designed to fit in the hand, i'd pay five times the amount for this build and craftmanship and you will never, NEVER use your Gerber again.Buy one, buy one for the wife and kids, get one for the mother-in-law, buy ten! just buy one now!!

Good multitool from the makers of the Swiss army knife you must bare in mind though this is made from the same steel stock as the pocket knives and from my experience is a little on the soft side if you are going to work it hard !The value was good and the delivery fast from AmazonI would recommend this tool as the quality is high only down side if you send it to Victorinox for repair you had best get a spare as their warranty work takes about three to four months ? Leatherman takes about a week ! So just something to consider! Great tool though .
