My Skeletool is my first "proper" multitool, bought as a replacement for a semi-novelty keyring/keychain tool I'd been given as a gift.I find that a major factor in the usefulness of a tool is having it to hand all the time which, for me, means attaching it to my keys. If it wasn't part of something essential I'd find myself leaving it behind, which would invariably prove to be at the time I really need it. So when I started looking for a replacement tool I initially considered the Leatherman Juice, which is suitably compact, but to get one with all the tools I wanted (corkscrew, file) I'd be looking at the top-of-the-range Juice Xe6,which is a bit strong on price and full of things I wouldn't use.So I decided to sacrifice the extra tools and started looking for something more minimalist, which is when I stumbled upon the Skeletool. It's compact and light enough not to be a burden, the carabiner makes it easy to connect to (and, importantly, quickly disconnect from) my keys, it's got the tools that I use most often, and it's about half the price of the Juice Xe6 which must make it the best value tool on the market!Apart from the cool and distrinctive looks of the Skeletool, the thing that I've found most beneficial is the excellent quality of the tool. The blade is exceptionally sharp and hasn't dulled at all in my six months of use, and the finish is as tight as the day I got it. The bottle opener is also very good and, when you've got the knack, the carabiner gate grabs the bottle cap once you've opened it, which is a cool (albeit probably unintended) feature. There is, however, one obvious downside; there aren't many tools. That's not to say there aren't enough to get by, but you do need to be skilled in the uses and abuses of tools to get a good level of versatility, and it would probably come up short if you want the correct tool for the correct job all of the time. But if you're happy to improvise; I've found the blade and pliers sufficient for most tasks, and the selection of screw driver bits is reasonable, although they could benefit from a bigger size difference between them.I've given the Skeletool four stars not because of any disappointment in ownership, as it's actually been better than I expected, but rather because you have to make sacrifices to have one, which means it's not perfect. It's still very good though...

I don't review as much as one should but there is an important need here. I wanted to compare to the Freestyle which is ostensibly the same chassis but excludes the karabiner/bottle opener and the bit driver. If you can do without those - a knife and pliers is all you need - then I would go for the Freestyle as it is far easier on the hand. The skeletool has jagged edges! The roughness could be outweighed by the usefulness of the bit driver. There are two flat heads and two Phillips (all different sizes). One of the bits is permanently in the driver whilst the spare, hides in the handle. Both the use of the pliers and the use of the knife is hampered by the jagged edges - with anything other than random use,you could end up with corns! The build quality on this tool is good, no doubt. Thus the stars. The idea of karabiner/bottle opener is great! Been able to just clip on and off belt loops or a rucksac is fantastic. Both the Freestyle and the skeletool have a clip. The freestyle feels almost invisible in your pocket (but could fall out) the skeletool not so dainty! It was a fine line but since I have a WAVE too and I don't have enough pockets, I have parted company with the Skeletool! It just doesn't feel right in my hands (and I can't send them back) but it might be suitable to others - the additional tools if you haven't a larger Leatherman too would be a valued reason to keep. The WAVE is a different beast. A lot more applications but the is a lot more weight too. Both the Skeletool and WAVE have the same nylon sheath (don't bother with the leather sheaths available - the popper entry is useless - stick to the Velcro nylon options). Both the Skeletool and the WAVE use the same bits. The optional 21 bit kit fits both.General advantages of Leathermans - definitely the blades and pliers. The blades are very sharp, fold effortlessly with one hand action and lock. Incidentally all the tools on the WAVE lock too. The one handed (thumb) blade opening feature is awesome if, like me, you don't have any fingernails. The WAVE, Skeletool and Freestyle all feature this opening mechanism.I have a very small Victorinox Classic SD on my key ring - very useful and neat but by no means as industrious as the larger Leathermans.

Switching to this from the leatherman wave, I was bound to know there would be some slight differences.-One difference is that it's thinner by looks. In truth it's really only a tad shorter than the wave and has the same width, only the *bulk* from the extra tools are gone.-The lighter and somewhat slightly weaker *in observation* frame, had a negative impact on how solid the pliers felt, where in the wave the handles pushed against my hands as I try to force the pliers past it's closing point, the skeletool's pliers design had a slight give to it, I suggest then that the skeletool's pliers would be more suited for *up to but not including* medium duty work.-Apart from the lack of the multitudes of tools. The blade design has gone through a refreshing change. The wave's blade was flat then ending at a clip point, whereas the skeletool has an almost continuous curve up til the point, which is far more useful for cutting.-The extra bit driver containment place looks susceptible to becoming loose, causing the extra bit to become lost, but that has yet to happen for me.Weight wise, it is lighter than all full sized leatherman tools. But cannot be compared to pocket knives as the skeletool is much heavier. For those who are very conscious of every ounce in their pack, go for a lighter penknife. But if you're looking for a skeletool that performs closer to the other full sized leatherman tools, then the skeletool CX may have that extra strengh given its coating and stronger blade. The CX is however, slightly heavier than this one, but generally unoticable by most. But as the steel alternative for someone who does not require everything. This tool is great.

Seems to be solidly made. I didn't want a massive multitool with a bazillion attachments - I keep one of those in my bike saddlebag.I just wanted a set of pliers, a knife and a screwdriver because, let's face it, that's all you ever really use. A set of hex keys is just too bulky for my day to day pocket. It seems solid enough, though the pliers are never going to take the sort of punishment a main toolbox set of pliers will take. Using them as a wrench would be asking for trouble. The wire cutters work just fine at both cutting and stripping small insulated cables of the sort I'm likely to ever use it for. The main thing I'm likely to do of a negative nature is fumble a screwdriver attachment and drop it in an engine or something. When changing over from posidrive to flat head you do have to handle a fiddly piece and slot it into the holder. The screwdriver works and gives a reasonable amount of torque. The bottle opener works perfectly. The blade is sharp and locks out solidly. It's not going to be used for butchering an elk, but for most likely uses like cutting string or opening packages or slicing cable ties this will do the job. It's small and light and doesn't encumber your pocket. Being in a pouch increases the likelihood that l the police will accept it's a tool and not an intended weapon. This will stop me having to go to my toolbox for basic jobs just fine. I think a lot of people have way too high an expectation of what a pocket tool will do.I would avoid this tool if you wanted a tool that has loads of tools on it because this is not it. If you want a tool that is small and light and grips, screws, cuts and opens bottles, this is for you.

As with every multitool, think carefully about what you want it for before you buy it. This is not a replacement for a toolkit. It's not a heavy duty piece of kit. It's well-made and very solid, but I wouldn't expect it to stand up to repeated hardcore jobs. I wouldn't want to use it for long periods of time. That's not what it's for. It's small and light and it's easy to be there when you need it. THAT is what it's for.The knife blade is a little small and I don't like the hole in the blade that's used to open it, but those are minor quibbles. The blade is very sharp and solid as a rock.My only other minor complaint is that the action is too stiff. It would be a bit nicer if opening it was a bit more fluid.Having said that, it's hardly a workout and I suspect it will get looser over time. One final point: I don't know whether this was intentional, but I like it. When you close the pliers gently, they stop moving before they are fully closed, then it takes a little more effort to close them fully. This is really good for things like getting at individual wires in a rat's nest or picking up screws you've dropped down a hole, as you inevitably will.Don't buy this if you expect it to replace your toolkit. Don't buy it if you expect to use it all day to do serious engineering jobs. But definitely buy it if you want something light and well-engineered that's to hand when you need it without riving great holes in your pocket.

As I am heavily involved in amateur theatre as a technician, having a reliable multitool is essential for me. I bought this as a complement to my Leatherman Wave, which was arguably overkill for day-to-day use. The advantages of the Skeletool are immediately obvious; it's lighweight (a little over half the weight of the Wave), contains all the tools I need regularly (pliers, combination knife, four screwdrivers and the all-important "gig spanner" or bottle opener!) and the pocket clip is an excellent touch. It's also stylish and unobtrusive - a definite advantage for me since I freelance on corporate events where having the right multitool can save the event and my pay check with it,but it must also be discreet enough to tuck it out of sight into a suit pocket. The tool feels well made and after four months of intensive use in a variety of work environments it is still as good as new.Obviously it isn't quite as well-equipped as the Wave, Surge or Charge models but quite frankly I don't need to have an awl, crosscut saw or metal file to hand on a daily basis so my Wave now lives on my work belt and is only rolled out for heavier duty. So long as you realise that this tool is for everyday tasks and that you may occasionally need to reach for a proper tool for specialised jobs, it represents extremely good value and far outstrips the traditional Swiss Army knife.

In my line of work (Police), a multi tool is always an important thing to have on hand at all times, from cutting seatbelts at a road traffic collision to cutting paper when you can't find a scissors! So several factors were important to me when buying a multi tool, quality, reliability, size/weight.Now I have owned Leatherman tools before so quality and reliability we never an issue when I was considering this brand but because I didn't want to be adding any unnecessary extra weight to my already heavy duty gear, I didn't want to consider a full large multi tool so I came to settle on this. It's perfect for what I want, it's very tidy and very light. It comes with a minimalistic nylon pouch that attaches to my belt very well with very little room for it move around on my belt and the tool inside is very secure even though it is only fastened by Velcro. The tool itself doesn't have a huge amount of different tools on it but I bought it knowing that. What it does have is all the important one, high quality knife, well aligned pliers and snips and basic Philips and flat head screwdriver. It has a few other tools also but they are the primary ones I use.To top it all off also the carabiner clip on the tool is very good quality and secure. I actually use it to attach to a key reel for extra security.

This multi tool is perfect to carry everyday. Its light and has all the essentials, a knife, pliers, screw bits and of course the bottle opener. It looks superb and its made beautifully. I dont want to walk around with a monstrous multi tool that pulls my trousers down and has loads of tools that are hardly used. Trust me this is all you need, get one.Having now used this tool for a month all I can say is I'm delighted with it. Its constantly with me and used several times a day during my work as a builder. It does have a pointy blade, but unlike another reviewer who is obsessed with being challenged by the police, I dont expect to have any problems with that as I'm 52, not in a gang and live in a rural area.I don't have a problem with the pliers being uncomfortable because of the screwdriver bits. Also having the choice of screwdriver bits which could be replaced if they wear out is brilliant. I think that its unlikely for them to be lost as the storage place seems quite secure to me.Overall, I cannot fault this tool. I also have a Gerber suspension, which is ok, a Leatherman crunch which is nice and a Buck Xtrac which has an interesting design but with useless pliers. The Skeletool is the one I now carry cant say more than that.

I've had this tool over a year and a half now. Originally I bought it with the same intention as most, as a handy tool for situations that needed a handy tool. In my eyes it has become much more. It's seen service making computers which is does amiably, I carry it while at work for all those little things that could be much easier done myself than by getting maintenance involved, it is my letter opener, camping and hiking partner(great for this being so light), and - on our off hours - beer buddy. It's good for pretty much all light jobs I can think of, however it's construction and design are squarely aimed at portability. I find the pliers to have slightly too much 'give' to inspire confidence, the blade dulls quicker than my old pocket knives and the semi-serrated section lost a lot of shape and metal the first time I used the blade to pry something open. For these two reasons I've taken a star off the rating, however I don't think anyone looking for a heavy duty multi-tool would have considered this tool in seriousness and it shouldn't be held against it.Consider the bit kit to accompany this,

Arrived 2 days early so a good startLeatherman would appear have their reputation for a reason, build is solid feels like it will take some punishment, streamlined so wont get in the way on a belt, Knife has a lockback spring on it making it very stable to use (wont snap shut and take your finger off like a pen knife) Nice design and finish (the screw driver bits are painted black which will scratch off with fairly light use so expect this to happen)you get 2 posidrive and 2 flat head adapters (Two Double ended) that will do most common screws but if you work with computers or more complicated equipment you might want to consider the extra adapter pack. When unfolding and putting into plierknife and driver positions the skeletool has a nice snap into place feel (I've used many other multitools and not many are like this not sure if this will last with extended use will have to wait and see)Out of the box the blade will easily slice through paper and shave the hairs off you arm.Would definitly recommend this as a every day use multitool

With an increasing number of jobs to do around the home and garden I started to look for a multi-tool to stop me rummaging around my tool box or garden shed to find what I needed. A mate of mine has The Wave which is undoubtably a quality product, more tools, but of course more weight and double the price of the Skeletool, and I didn't think I'd use all the features the Wave has. The Skeletool covers the basics; Pliers, Wire Cutters, Locking Knife, Drill bits (flat and Phillips) and bottle opener. I found the pliers more comfortable to use than the Wave thanks to the curvature of the body. For the price I'm very happy with the product, it's a quality design and well put together. The 25 year warranty Leatherman provides, proves this will last for many years to come.Update March 2015:After 6 years it's still going strong and is as good as it was day 1. I keep it in a kitchen drawer rather than the toolbox so I know where it is at all times. The blade has been well used but remains sharp.

A high quality Leatherman tool. The build quality and detailing are excellent. The tool is compact and lightweight and has a belt clip and carabiner type attachment which means it can be carried securely without the case if desired. The range of features/blades is a bit more limited than on other full-size multi-tools however, many of those other features seem to be rarely used in my experience - e.g. hole punch, toothpick & screwdriver bits that are too short to really reach anything. The main blade is around 6cm in length, can be opened one-handed and locks securely in position. The jaws on the pliers are slim which helps with getting into awkward areas but will ultimately limit the amount of force that you can apply. The interchangeable screwdriver bits are a nice idea - the only downside being that additional bits must be purchased separately. There is also an extension available for the screwdriver bits - again at additional cost.

This is another beautiful object from Leatherman. It isn't as functional as the Wave, so if you're looking for a full set of tools - including a serrated blade and a saw - then you might want to try that. However, it's well built, light and each of the tools works as it should. On the plus side: the blade opens with one hand very smoothly, and flips back just as easily; it's light enough that you barely feel it in your pocket; the pliers and wire cutters are sturdy and sharp; the bottle opener is accessible without opening the tool (which I think gives a big hint as to what the manufacturers were expecting this product to be used for most of all). The Skeletool actually feels far more solid than the Wave, which is saying something.Cons: No saw, which is handy in the garden and for out-and-about rugged stuff. On balance, I think this is a bit of a Leatherman collectors' tool, but worth the price nonetheless.

In September I misplaced my full sized & rather bulky Leatherman Wave multitool and after a couple of weeks I realised just how much it was used, and how useful it really was. The Wave is rather bulky and you know it is on your belt so I downsized to the Skeletool and to date have found it very reliable. It is a basic tool, and the knife blade is not safely opened by one hand although it can be done I do not recommend it. As you would expect from Leatherman everything works well, also the pliers are very tactile to use in either hand. The pouch has multi point fixing loops on it, also additional pockets. The Skeletool could be easier to open, but then it may not be so precise,& the screwdriver bit housing could be a little less fiddly, however as an everyday non specialist good quality basic tool you probably can't better it.

Excellent multi-tool - very lightweight, but strong and versatile. The blade (which is extremely sharp) can be opened one handed with your thumb. The blade is a liner-lock, which can be a bit confusing if you haven't used one before and there were no instructions with the tool I received. This means that the blade locks open by means of a piece of sprung steel located at the base of the blade (there is a little padlock sign engraved on it). You have to push the bar to one side to close the blade. The pliers are of very high quality and have built in wire cutters - very handy for cutting those annoying plastic tags which seem to be attached to everything we buy. Highly recommended for lightweight to medium work, but if you are thinking of using it for heavy jobs I would suggest you also buy a more substantial tool.
