I got my Gerber Suspension last month to replace a cheap multitool I've had for a few years which just became too loose to use safely. I use it mainly for work, and overall it's performed brilliantly so far. The pliers are capable, handily spring loaded and have a good closure right to the very tip - I've used it to pull out tiny splinters more than once, they're that fine. The locking system is good, if a little stiff from time to time. The scissors are also pretty good by penknife standards, which makes a refreshing change. There is however, always a downside, so I'll dwell on that for a while!Firstly, the sheath that comes with it. There are little knobs on the sides of each blade to make it easier to open them single handed. The person who designed these knobs obviously didn't communicate too closely with the person who designed the sheath. It has a sewn on flap over the entry hole placed so that the knobs on the blade catch on the underside of it, making it frequently all but impossible to remove the tool from the pouch without using both hands - not too handy. After four or five times I got annoyed and used the main blade to cut about half an inch down the sheath on the corner it was catching, so the flap bends out of the way. Never had a problem since - but you shouldn't have to modify something designed for a specific purpose before it can do its only job!2) This is fairly minor to me but you might think otherwise - the cross head screwdriver is rubbish.3) I can't see the point of having both a serrated and streight edge blade. A properly sharpened streight edge should be all you ever need - I'd happily lose the serrated one for a better cross head screwdriver.4) The opening system for everything barring the two blades requires you to have a reasonable length of finger nail, and if you're wearing work gloves there's no hope. It is an improvement over my last multitool however, where you'd open one thing and everything would fold out, leaving you to fold the parts you don't need back in.5) This may not be an issue to you, but the streight blade comes with a very finely beveled edge which is great for getting an incredibly sharp knife, but such a thin edge is prone to damage. You might want to think about grinding a shallower bevel when you first sharpen it, but that would depend on what you regularly cut. These however are all fairly minor niggles to me and overall, it's a very capable tool. If you want an above average quality item without shelling out ludicrous money for a Leatherman, then go for it, I'd certainly recommend it!

Been using this thing for a month or so. I'm a sound engineer, so I come across a reasonable amount of things that need screwing/cutting/plier-ing. It's an absolutely fantastic tool, it has all of the things I need and none of the things I don't:- The knives arrive sharp and seem to stay sharp, I'll update this review when they need sharpening.- The screwdrivers are good enough for most screws (the pozi-drive slips on stiffer screws, but at that point you should be using a proper screwdriver anyway). The small flathead isn't quite small enough for adjusting the gain pots on some older-style wireless mic packs I come across, so I keep a teeny screwdriver on my belt for that.- The bottle opener has opened every bottle I've thrown at it so far,a not insignificant number.- The scissors are a little uncomfortable to use but they do cut competently.- There's a sturdy tie-off point which is absolutely essential if you're working at any kind of height; You wouldn't want to drop a sharp knife on people below.- The belt pouch seems fairly half-assed but it does keep the tool attached securely to my belt.- The pliers/snips are sturdy and predictably cut/strip VanDamme Tour Grade cable, and guitar strings. I've also used them to extract hex bolts, a task which they perform amicably.- The tool in general feels well-built and sturdy. There's no wobble or slop in any of the mechanisms, and the blade locks feel secure. This tool is becoming my new daily driver multitool, after the hinges on my Gerber Compact Sport (an absolutely fantastic tool) finally gave out. At £19 it's an absolute steal, and I would definitely recommend it to those looking for a multitool but don't want to spend £90 on a Leatherman Wave.Keep in mind that knives with locking blades are not legal to carry on your person in the UK, so please consult your local police force before making the purchase: I've spoken to mine who agreed that locking blades are safer for the user and advised that provided I kept it in my bag/tool case when not in a venue I should be alright. YMMV however, so do your due diligence and don't pull any stupid stunts.I use a bottle of 3-in-1 oil to keep the tool lubricated. The only time I've had to add a few drops is when I cleaned some contact cement from the blade with acetone. In normal usage, you should only need to lubricate the mechanisms every 3/4 months, or when the knife mechanisms feel "rough".TL;DR: Great tool, buy it if you're considering it. Not legal to carry on your person in the UK, keep it in your toolkit and you should be OK.

I've owned my Gerber Suspension for about 18 months, and in that time have taken it on several national theatre tours, and carried it with me more or less every day, so will hopefully be able to shed some light on how it lasts in the long term.In short, you wont be disappointed. The knives are extremely sharp, and I find myself making use of all the tools extremely regularly with the possible exception of the saw, which I've maybe used twice. The sprung pliers are fantastic and the main reason I chose the Gerber over a Leatherman, as I'm often using it one handed up a ladder. As for how it wears over time, obviously your milage will vary depending on use,but after a 18 months of extremely heavy use mine is generally holding up well, and still looks like new after a quick clean as you can see in the pictures. The knives have dulled ever so slightly (though as another reviewer said, they arrive sharp enough to shave with, so they're still plenty good enough). The screwdriver heads are just starting to show signs of wear, and it has occasionally required me to tighten the torx screws holding it together as they've occasionally worked loose. As others have mentioned, the spring mechanism in the scissors leaves a bit to be desired, and after a few months had stopped working, though I found after dismantling it to oil and clean it a few weeks back it started working perfectly again, so I assume this is down to the torx screws working loose. The holster is passable, though the velcro holding it shut will wear out fast. I've often had it fly from the holster whilst running. I've sewn a popper onto mine, but you may want to look for a better one.Major good points:Extremely useful, well thought out.Wears well, still looks and works great after a thorough bashingSpring loaded pliers are a big plusKnives are amazing when newLocking tools have likely saved me many accidentsEasy to disassemble to clean and oilDrawbacks:Will need a little maintenance with heavy usageSpring mechanism on scissors is flimsyHolster leaves much to be desiredNo spare parts are soldOverall I'm very happy, and would completely recommend!

I previously owned an original Leatherman multi-tool for about 20 years to which the "Suspension" is being compared. I have been making regular use of this tool for several weeks now and find it superior to the Leatherman in convenience - all of the blades and tools can be accessed from the closed position, and all blades positively lock in place, so no more pinched digits/severed heads as a result of blades collapsing in use (WARNING: The locking blades may be a legal issue for users in Scotland!).It has two short knife blades, one serrated, t'other plain, which required very little work to get to razor sharpness - the Leatherman knife blade was never satisfactorily sharp and seemed to loseits edge very quickly. Most of the tools seem to function pretty well with the exception of the bottle opener, which struggles to engage properly with beer bottle caps and the cross-head screw-driver which is a bit of a token effort, and is really a very narrow/pointed flat-head driver with a couple of "bumps" on it: this works on easy screws, but does not inspire confidence. I also miss the files from the LM.When opened up, the pliers are spring loaded which is a nice feature for one handed use, and the handle pleasantly padded and far less painful in use than the original Leatherman's bare metal - this point has been rectified on the new LM.Having knackered my beloved Leatherman bending a bike-spoke, I purchased the Gerber as a replacement, but sent off my LM under their lifetime guarantee, not expecting much. I was amazed to receive a replacement, upgraded base-model Leatherman in exchange. Between the two, this latter has the edge in build quality, though I believe Gerber offer a similar warranty on their products. All together the Gerber is a comparable tool at a lower price than the LM - though like most multi-tools is partly a collection of second rate tools in a very convenient, compact package. Highly recommended for the price, especially if the warranty is as good as Leathermans.

At the time of buying this I paid £39.98. Now afterwards I'm reading that a lot of people have got this for approximately £20 due to huge price fluctuations?? Not sure if this is true but may be worth keeping an eye on the price. After using many different multi-tools over the years I can say it's pretty solid and has a decent weight to it. Some people don't like the weight but I personally prefer it. It's made in China so don't expect it to be made in the USA like the originals, but despite that the quality seems pretty good on early impressions. One of the best features of this multi-tool is the locking feature which locks all tools whenever they're fully open and is only released via thesmall spring loaded slider conveniently situated on both sides of the tool - an invaluable feature if you've ever had a knife fold back onto your fingers when in use! The knife is short and generally small due to it having to fit into the frame so will depend on your personal needs, although this is an issue with many multi-tools, and the 'saw' is a joke to be honest as it's far too thick to be of any real use but of course some people may find use for it. The other tools all seem pretty good up to now and I was pleasantly surprised at the practicality of the cross-head screwdriver. Generally it's a decent multi-tool but after a few days heavy use I'm just not convinced it warrants the price bracket to be honest. Around the £25-£30 mark would be about right in my opinion. Not a huge difference I know but just a small observation. I'm going to be using this over the next few months so I'll happily update this review with any info I feel may be helpful to prospective buyers. In summary, a decent enough multi-tool which feels solid enough in the hand, but just a little overpriced at just under £40 I feel.

I need a multi-tool for my job (not a contractual obligation thing, just useful to have). I work on the Motorway in some grotty conditions which can involve crawling under cars & having to run across three or four lanes so I wasn't prepared to lose my £80+ Leatherman or Gerber. Been looking at the Suspension but at the time they were still around the forty pounds mark so I bought myself the Stanley look alike version. (Stick with it, this isn't a review on the Stanley)Knew I'd dropped a clanger as soon as it arrived - THE BLADES DON'T LOCK !!! If you're thinking of buying one of these types of knives/multi-tools for the first time, think very carefully about the use you're going to be putting it to.My Leatherman & Gerber both have locking blades which doesn't sound like a big deal - until you're out in the pissing rain, trying to prise a towing-eye cover off & the blade folds close. The other annoying thing is that to access any of the tools you have to open the handles, which isn't a biggie but not the best.I'd look at the Suspension every so often, then, one day the price was down to under twenty quid so I grabbed one. Build quality is better than the Stanley - not by a lot, but it just felt "better". However, the tools are all accessible without opening the handles &, more importantly, lock into place. The lock mechanism is very easy to operate, the tools all have thumb notches to assist opening, although the scissors are a bit fiddly. The blades are a little short, and the inclusion of a file (just in case I need to do a spot of manicuring) would have given it a five star review. All in all, you can buy better, but what do you actually need & how much do you want to spend!! For the money, this is a value item

Arrived within 2-3 days, so I would use the seller again. I've been looking for a decent multi-tool for a while and this seems to fit my requirements. Price wise it's good value for money, has good build quality and feels solid. Comes with a lovely black pouch/sheath with a velcro cover plus it has two different belt loops which gives the user some variety depending on how they want carry the item. I'll be using this as a daily go to multi-tool. Taking the tools can be a wee bit fiddly but that's just a case of getting used to it, but saying that as it has a skeleton frame you can push out the tools that you require from the opposite side if (you'll understand what I mean when you get one).Gerber always seem to thrive on it's reputation that it's products are made in the USA, whereas this is made in China, not that should put anyone off buying this multi-tool, I'm just a wee bit annoyed as it feels a bit like hype/false advertising on Gerber's part. In addition, Gerber's full lifetime warranty is only valid in North America and Canada, anywhere outwith that area it's only 25 years.Pros: Good value for money, good selection of tool, blades are sharp, feels and looks well made, ergonomic, sturdy locking mechanism for tools when in use, comes with a good handy sheath, 2 different belt loop settings on sheathCons: 25 year warranty if bought outside North America where it would have a full lifetime warranty. Saw had a slightly wobble, can be easily rectified by tightening screw. Lanyard ring is a bit redundant if using other tools as it gets in the way of other, unless you attach it to an releasable lanyard clip. Will update product review if I have and more good or bad feedback.

This multi tool can take quite a lot - I only needed to order a new one because I misplaced my old one.The pliers are by far the best functionality - suspended and comfortable to use. They don't wobble and even though I sometimes applied rotational force they never got looser or broke. I couldn't even get the cutters dented at any point. If your pair breaks after a year, send it back, it's a faulty one.The straight blade is of high quality - it may need to be sharpened every now and then, but the shape and design make it easy to use and sharpen.Other good functionalities are the can/bottle opener, scissors (they are actually useful), screwdriver heads. The only things I haven't found any use so far are the wiggly blade, forceps and the saw I only used recently to prove that it works. And it does, just not the handiest saw ever.Overall a very good product, especially now that Gerber unveiled an "updated version" of this same tool. I haven't tried that tool but it makes sellers lower the price of this one to make it more attractive which is even better for me. Worth your money multiple times.EDIT: 22/01/2016Now I finally managed to bend the pliers by twisting them. Only by a few millimeters and I really had to use a lot of muscle to do that. Still more than usable. Also the blade is really good - I thought it needs sharpening every now and then but really it seems to arrive in less than sharpest possible condition. In reality the blade can drive through steel as was demonstrated when I was removing some really hard plastic residue from a small piece of steel. Still recommending at 5/5.

It's a pretty neat tool. I was first trying to justify the higher price of a Leatherman, but decided in the end to get this one. It is a solid thing, but a little heavyish. I didn't have any kind of long nose pliers, so my first reaction was to get a Channellock or Knipex pliers, but then when I also hike and go camping a lot, I thought this kind of thing might come as handy. Not sure can you REALLY compare them. The blades are really sharp. I have now close experience of it as I pushed the knife up with my finger and it cut me straight away. It was quite a deep cut as the bleeding wouldn't stop in a long time, it even started coming through a bandage.I was very surprised by the sharpness and I'm now worried that I might accidentally kill myself after few pints when camping and messing with this. There are 2 saws, and I'm not sure where the thinner one is really used for, but it didn't cut wood as well as the other one. What I like about especially in this is the suspension system and the lock (wouldn't go for non-locking system at all now), and that it fits in your palm well, but also that the blades are very sharp. The reason I don't give 5 stars is that I found an imperfection just where the plier jaws meet; this tiny stump, a leftover defect perhaps from "forging", which for me as I was looking for decent pliers at the first place is not perfect. I suppose I could easily chip it away, but why should I have to do it. One other thing also is the Philips screwdriver, I tried it on a screw which seemed to open fine, but it looks quite thin so the grasp might not be the best for all screws.

I purchased this multi-tool at the time mainly because of the other reviews, and the price difference compared to some Leatherman ones, and that sweet sweet lifetime guarantee. I think it cost me about £16, and it has been worth every penny. It comes in a nice little fabric case with a couple of belt loops on the back, one for having it vertically attached, and one for having it horizontally. I have never used the straps personally, my belts are either too wide for them, or too fat. This slight flaw is the only problem I have had with the tool. Its main purpose is as a general fix-all for Archery. The variety of tools have all come in handy at different times. The pliers themselves are strong and functional; the handle is large enough that it is very comfortable to grip tightly. The knife blades are top notch, I have found the standard blade brilliant for things from cutting wrapping paper, to stripping dead fletchings off of arrows. The variety of screwdriver heads is very useful, and the scissors while small, are surprisingly sharp and cut through things with ease. I wouldn't use them for anything big, but for cutting loose threads off jumpers or opening blister packs they are perfect.I must admit, I had never previously considered the need to have a tool such as this. But when I accidentally left it at a friends for a week, it revealed how much I had grown to rely on it. The saying goes somewhat like 'If the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail', this multi-tool has the implement for all your needs. Except that is, for hammering things.

UPDATE: (14 April 2012) Upon closer inspection - although this is the tool I ordered and paid for, I actually received a different model - the "Gerber Compact Sport Multi-Plier 400 - SS" So the review actually refers to a different tool.Original review: (21 Jan 2012)I bought this as a present for my son for his travels to South Africa. It arrived in a substantial nylon pouch inside a cardboard box. As it was accessible, I had a play with it.Opening the tool isn't obvious! It took me a couple of minutes to work out how. This is quite good as the tool can't come open by accident! The knife blade is quite small - big enough to cut a rope or put a notch in a piece of wood, but not much more. The rest of the tools are well designed and well made.I thought it was ideal for the purpose I bought it for. Now that my son's in South Africa, he thinks so too. It's not too heavy in his day bag and he's found lots of uses for it so far - opening beer bottles, I expect - and is very pleased with it.Summary: ideal for travelling and at a very modest cost. Now he's returned from South Africa: (14 April 2012)He found the tool invaluable and says he used it at least once a day and sometimes several times a day. All the joints are still good and tight, the blades still have their edges and there's so sign of corrosion anywhere. He liked that it was lighter than my Leatherman and much prefers it. He also reckons that it's going to last him for many years to come.Summary: He's delighted with the tool and I'm delighted that I bought it for him. Two happy guys.

This appears excellent on first impression. It seems robust and less likely to break than lighter, smaller, cheaper options. I say lighter as this is relatively heavy and when holding it with both handles together it is quite large, certainly compared to a buck knife that I've had for over a decade. Also the size makes it not the most comfortable to hold for long periods and there are no rubberised inserts apart from at the ends for use with the pliers, or other hand contoured parts. The edge blades are able to be put into work position by using the side lugs and all lock well (beware as the locking makes even the small blades illegal within UK so don't go strolling along the High Street with it fixed to your belt!)The middle accessories; screwdriver, scissors, lanyard eye, bottle/can opener are a bit fiddly to get out with no finger nail recesses. I'm sure there is a technique to it but with no instructions included I'll need to trial and error. The knives are sharp though and each of the accessories look as if they will do you a job when out and about. I used the straight edged knife during some woodwork and the edge stayed sharp throughout.Having the addition of a serrated second blade is great though for more stubborn cutting and is every bit as sharp. The best bit was the price though. After a successful price match it was in the bag for less than a score. At that price it could be a 5 star however until I've used it problem free for years it will be a high four.

I bought this to have for working around the house & garden but mainly for when I'm hiking and kayaking. This really is a great wee multitool, i normally carry it most when I'm out in the countryside and keep it close to hand when I'm out sea-kayaking.It has a useful combination of tools and blades which most people would find a use for, the safety locking features on the blades and scissors work very well, the spring loaded pliers are a nice feature which isn't often found on multitools, especially when combined with the neoprene pads and ergonomic shape of the handles making it more comfortable to handle than other types of multi-tool.The build quality is impressive as it feels nice and solid and all components move smoothly, all locking mechanisms work well. This was recommended to me by a colleague i work with at sea as he is a Gerber fan whereas i normally favour Leathermans, but for the price and the good reviews i thought i couldn't go wrong, and i was right, while i use it a lot for social/domestic applications (household DIY, Outdoors, Kayaking, etc), i would still favour my larger Leatherman for more commercial applications (working on machinery, deck-work onboard commercial ships, etc) mainly just because this Gerber is a bit small in comparison to my Leatherman.Despite that, I'm very pleased with this product and regularly put it to good use.I would recommend this product.I had no issues with delivery.

I love this multi-tool. It's just handy to have around. Can't say anything bad about the actual product. However, several months after purchase I was informed that this is infact illegal to carry in the UK. I don't know about you guys but I'm getting sick of the UK and its laws. It's one of those situations where if you work in a job where you use a tool like this often then it's probably ok to have it on you. But if you don't and just like having this on your person because of its versatility and general handiness then you run the risk of having your collar felt.As far as I'm aware, under UK law you can't carry a blade bigger than 3.5 inches, the Gerber Suspension blades are not much bigger than 2.5",so that's ok. The other thing about knife laws in the UK is that you cannot carry a blade that has a locking mechanism. Gerber Suspension has the Safe-T locking mechanism which makes it illegal. It's irony laced with stupidity, the mechanism provided for the safety of the user is the very thing that makes this product illegal. That's like a law saying "You cannot ride a motorcycle without a crash helmet, but the wearing of such a helmet makes riding a motorcycle illegal." You have to wonder who makes these rules up and what sort of reality they live in.As a result my Gerber Suspension never leaves the house, instead I bought the Gerber Clutch. Much smaller but just as versatile.

Hi, I have used one of these for a couple of months for many, many jobs as I am a builder. I would say it's very, very good and great value at around £22. The nylon pouch belt loop broke off in the first 2 weeks. I broke the flat blade screwdriver undoing a seized jubilee clip. I was using great force though and expected it to go. It's high tensile so the tip chipped off instead of bending out of shape like a mild steel one would. I've just ground it back to shape with an angle grinder. I'm really happy with it and it gets used everyday many times. I've just bought this one for my mate as a prezzie and he was over the moon with it. I don't expect a tool at this price to be up to much but it is.I think any screwdriver would have broke with the force I used and really would have expected it to fail much earlier. The way I look at it is I give it a really hard time and when it breaks ill get another one as its so cheap. But I can see it going on for a lonnnng time. Great item. regards MarkUPDATE 1 YEAR ON....Brilliant, use it all the time and it's still going. The crosshead screwdriver is really good, fits lots of different sise screws. Serated blade is still excelent and the main blade lasts a good while before sharpening. great tool.
