LATEST UPDATE - A VIDEO IS ATTACHED WHICH WILL NOT WIN ANY AWARDS AT CANNESI really liked this telephone from the outset and whilst it is chunky, I think that most people would purchase this item for use in a more work orientated than home orientated environment. I have tested it so far in the medical practice where I work and I am pleased to say that it has proven to be invaluable to me as the practice manager; so much so that I am thinking of purchasing similar handsets for all of our managers in order that they can stay connected to their desk when in other parts of the building.Key features:==========+ Robust+ Hardwearing "tough" keypad+ 200 number memory (more than enough for most)+ Fits onto a belt with a clip (without being sexist,ok for men, but not for most female managers I fear)+ Voicemail function+ Call blocker (yet to be tested)+ Simple to use+ Texting service is available (at extra charge from BT)Drawbacks========+ It is a bit bulky but fits on a belt fine and bearing in mind the range that it can receive a signal it is fine, particularly as it clips onto my belt.+ The texting service will attract a fee.+ I think 1km range is optimistic and signal strength will be degraded the more walls and obstacles encountered.UPDATE=======I installed the handset at home; I live in a 18th century cottage with brick internal walls and cob walls up to 3 feet thick. I placed the sender unit in the window of our dining room ("not for long" says my wife) and it was easily able to transmit and receive up to our gate; a distance of 30 metres. Unfortunately this is some distance away from the 1km advertised, 950 metres in fact and so I walked up the track leading away from our house and at 300 metres was unable to receive a signal. I think the combination of thick walls and trees were too great an obstacle for it to overcome. I have re-positioned the sender unit in our bedroom window ("no, not there either") and can confirm that it will transmit and receive up to about 500 metres in line of sight of our window, but the signal breaks up after that. One of the things that can be considered is that the sender unit can be fixed to a wall or similar and there are screws and raw plugs supplied for this function or simply placed on a surface; it is a matter of finding the right place.I can confirm that this item does reach all of our outbuildings outside and is far better in this regard than our standard BT unit which doesn't transmit to these at all. I suppose the main thing for me, is that it reaches the perimeter of our garden and outbuildings, stretching to a radius of 50 metres without any issues. So after testing it at home and work, I do think that this is a good item, it works reasonably well, the calls can be heard and people can hear me fine, it is rugged and is more than suitable for a working environment. Where it lets itself down is that I think that 1km is a bit optimistic and probably distances of this length will only be possible in direct line of sight, without any obstacles to interfere.I therefore think that my original 4 star rating is appropriate.

**UPDATE : As for the basic functions, the 'phone is robust and buttons responsive. It lasted FIVE days off the charger with a full charge and DOES work from the coffee shop over the road from my home. Didn't work from the pub 'round the corner but then I do have the transmitter near the floor. The handset does feel very industrial and may not suit those with small hands or wanting something more stylish/to match home furnishings. **1st attempt at setup was a nightmare..After charging for a day, I plugged it into the phoneline in the evening to try out.I completed the setup options on the screen by entering the time, date etc.I exchanged calls with my mobile 'phone and it seemed to work OK so I went to bed.Infuriatingly, the thing kept ringing of its own accord. On answering, the line would go dead; I couldn't work out if it was a member of my family trying to get in touch. On one occasion, the number calling was 0000. I then received a spoken message saying that text messaging had been set up but that I didn't have caller-ID.I then unplugged the 'phone as I was getting somewhat hacked-off by the constant ringing from this 'Block Nuisance Calls' 'phone. Ironic.Indeed, I do not have caller-ID set up on my line which renders the blocking features impotent. BT charge twenty quid a year to enable caller-ID which BT users should bear in mind. Even with this enabled, the blocking options are rather limited, they simply block calls from numbers (10 max.) you've manually typed-in or blanket-block calls with numbers witheld or from overseas.I would much prefer a system which blocks the unsolicited recorded message PPI calls we all get. Some other systems automatically answer with a message 'Press 1 if you're a human' to filter-out call-center roobots, no premium caller-ID service required. My provider charges less than BT for caller-ID and other companies offer it free. Even so, I think that as one of the main selling-points of this 'phone, the blocking options are pretty poor. The other selling-points are durability and range. It does feel robust with rubbery edging but is also a bit bulky in the hand.I'll report back about the range once I see if it'll work from my Local down the road(!)

We live in big old house with super thick walls. Taking our normal phone device from the lounge to the kitchen is not an option, in fact it fails very quickly. We had though we were stuck with a plug in phone for ever and a day until this little beauty fell on the door step.I have used this phone in every conceivable room in the house, for my review of course. It has not lost signal, it has not cracked, the person on the other end wasn't muffled or cut off in their prime. It is to say the least a joy.The ringer volume is amazing set to super loud so u can hear in every room in the house and I say this in all honesty, you cannot hear the doorbell at the other side of the house unless the doors are open. This ringer I can hear from my bedroom at the other end of my home with every door shut and the phone is sited at the far end my bedroom at the other, the doorbell in the middle so you can see why I say it's super loud. Now this phone boasts a call block facility, it has an answering service it offers a promise of being water proof. Now the call blocker is efficient and worth having on any home phone in a world where unscrupulous companies phone constantly. This is a feature I have used already and I am very comfortable with having. The answering service is very good to. If you miss a phone call it's possible to listen to the message from the handset from say my bedroom without the necessity of going down flights of stairs. All in all I would recommend this phone to anyone, it's good quality build and rugged handset style, similar to one of the big mobile phones we used to buy many many years ago, it's coated in rubber so easy to hold and if you want to pop it on a belt on your jeans in the garden it has a clip to do that as well. Now I must confirm I have yet to take this a kilometre from home to test, and being honest it's unlikely I ever will so I can't vouch for this claim, nor would I be excited to test its water resistance either, if it were to rain in the garden I would take this inside with me as that would be sensible.Price point is high but you get what you pay for and this I would have happily paid for had it not been a Vine Product.

The BT elements cordless phone needs to be set up and charged 24 hours before you use it. The process is quite simple: plug the mains base unit, (the one with twin aerials), into a socket close to a telephone socket keeping it a metre away from other electrical appliances in order to avoid interference. Don't connect the phone plug just yet. Connect the phone charger adapter to another socket and put the phone in the holder to charge: I have put the handset charger in a different room to the base unit. 24 hours later, connect the phone plug into the phone socket and you will be more or less ready to go. Set the time and date and that is it. There is a function to block calls, but you need to set that up with your telephone line provider. I tried the phone out in an old stone building with wall 2 feet thick, normally not a good place for wireless technology. The phone range says it is up to a kilometre, but I used it outside and about 100 feet from the base unit, managing to make and receive calls that were clear, with good volume, both on and off speaker. The phone comes with two aerials, short and long and a belt clip to make walking around easier. It is quiet light in the hand, but a good size for a handset that is comfortable to use. It does look a bit like a mid 90's mobile, but who's to say that's such a bad thing: I quite like it as it is workmanlike and functional rather than trying to make a style statement. The face has a rubberised edge to guard against knocks and large enough keys to avoid fat-finger syndrome. All-in-all, I think that it is a pretty good piece of kit. The key consideration will be how effective the range will be: this is a work phone, I assume, rather than a domestic one. I used it inside and outside and it worked in my area, where wireless connections for I.T. is normally variable to poor and it worked well: only time will tell if it continues to do so, but I can't find anything to be especially critical about up to now. I will update this review if things change.

Both water and dust proof to IP67 and long range all in one. Ideal to take out in the garden with you as they are rainproof and you can rinse them under the cold tap if any dirt gets on them.I find the menu system very logical and simple to follow, and if you have multiple handsets they work as an integrated system - automatically syncing the phone book, time & date etc between themselves when you make changes. The base unit appears to contribute a lot to the extended range as I registered one of my old Panasonic DECT handsets to the BT base and its range was much better than when using the original Panasonic base.Best coverage obviously depends on you locating this optimally and this is helped by the base having screw mounting for optional wall mounting and a generous 2.5m long power lead. Mine is in an upstairs room. The handset has a small external aerial which is a quality screw in type and for extra range you simply swap the standard one with the extra long aerial which is supplied in the box.Range:: they worked fine at 750m outdoors line of sight - all functions such as accessing the answer phone as well as speech working fine - but became a bit crackly when I walked further to the 1000m max they claim, and you then had to keep the handset facing toward the base station to work ie your head not in the way!! I don't have a big enough house or stone walls to challenge the indoor range.I really find the SMS text to my mobile to let me know a message has been left on the base unit's answer phone to be very handy - plus with CLI you get the number and even name of the caller if matched in your phonebook list. Simply call home to retrieve your message.Only one negative point I can find which is the max handset earpiece volume is a bit low for a phone designed to be used outside - I often have to switch to speaker phone (simply press green button again) which lets me hear above background noise. Wonder if BT could do a software update to give more volume?Read full review...

Setting up the phone was quick and easy once the handset had been charged for 24 hours. The base unit plugs into an electrical socket and also a nearby phone line; the charger pod can be connected to any power source within range. The phone has a good selection of features including an answer phone, name and number directory, clock, calendar and alarm – together with a VIP list and long talk time. The compact base unit has two stubby antennae, a red glowing indicator light and a beep signal to confirm that power is connected. The handset does have a “no nonsense” appearance and is ruggedly constructed, with a belt hook, rubber alphanumeric buttons and a hands-free capability. BT states that it is dust-proof,which is a definite advantage for my husband's workshop use. They also claim that the phone is waterproof up to a depth of 1 metre for up 30 minutes, which could be of benefit to outdoor workers. The charging pod is compact and sturdy and the handset seats firmly and securely.Generally, the phone worked well. The outside reception was marginally better than our present cordless handset, but improved markedly when the larger antenna was fitted. My husband often forgets to take his mobile down to the workshop at the end of the garden and messages left on the house answer machine go unnoticed, so this phone has been a blessing. However, there were a few little negative points. Although we had the phone on the maximum volume setting, my husband - who has a hearing problem - found it difficult to hear conversations at times. The phone is advertised as having the facility to block nuisance calls and although I guessed that this would be a chargeable extra from BT, some people could be misled into thinking that it was a free option. Finally, although the LED display was easy to read, I personally disliked the amber colour.Overall, a functional and useful phone with a good reception range and robust construction

The BT Elements certainly won’t win any design awards, its clunky design makes it reminiscent of a 1980s ‘brick’ mobile phone. But, aesthetics aside, it’s a well-built device with a sturdy and durable feel to it. The buttons on it are rubber and give good, tactile feedback, though I have noticed that occasionally a button has to be pressed more than once for it to register. The phone comes with few frills and is simple to use and very easy to setup. Just plug the base station into a phone socket and a nearby plug socket, then plug the charger anywhere in the house. The phone comes with a folded sheet of instructions though there’s very little to read as setup is so straightforward. The phone also comes with a belt-clip and an extra 'super strength' antenna which you can fit instead of the smaller antenna featured in the picture. This larger antenna is only needed if you intend on utilising the phone’s 1 km range, otherwise you can stick with the stock antenna that’s fitted. In use I found the range to be excellent and the line was crisp and clear when using the phone from anywhere in the house. As mentioned above, the BT Elements is simply ‘a phone’ and doesn’t come with the huge range of features that a mobile phone has. Its main standout features are call blocking, a built-in answer machine, text messages, a 200 contact address book and choice of ringtones. There’s no volume on it, so the ringtones can’t be turned up or down, nor can the line volume. The LCD display is bright and easy to read but is not particularly customisable, contrast can be changed but there’s no choice of other colours beyond the default amber. The BT Elements is a pleasingly robust phone that doesn’t try and do too much other than be a regular phone. It’s very easy to use and has a great range, all in all this is an excellent home phone.

I bought these to replace an original set of BT elements phones which have done sterling service for years and then due to something or other started to fail to log on the base. I require a set which would be damp proof, dirt resistance and semi ruggedized..After shopping around I found that buying 2 2 handset sets was cheaper than buying a 4 handset kit.Absolutely no problems at all functionally, logged all 4 handsets onto the one base and labelled than up. The great thing about these are that they truly are fully GAP compatibly so most settings can be done from one phone, the telephone directory is shared (and not contained the one handset, one of the bugs with the original supposedly GAP BT Elements). No problems with call quality but you do have to wait for small time for the answer button to register (it's still less than a second but it's longer than I experienced with the predecessors).Speaker phone is adequate, with the caller not being aware that they are in that mode. Its easy to set up call blocking but we recognise the normal junk calls so just don't pickup. The 2 things I can't comment upon are1) Range, they are adequate enough to reach thru this 3 storey, solid build property but I haven't taken it for a jaunt up the road. Don't require that use so I haven't tested it. If it does then I would (using the bigger ariel)2)The answer phone, don't use them, don't really need then but it is a useful addon if you did.The actual design with the external ariel is a through back to the old days where all cordless phones had one and does look like a hand held radio, which some people may not like, the buttons are clearly labelled and you require a firm push to actually engage on some of them, which may get easier over time. The display is adequate. What more can you say about good working phone

This phone is supposed to be waterproof up to a depth of 1 metre, so if you're the sort of person who is likely to drop your phone in a bowl (or jug) of water, this phone is right for you. This is a practical, hard-wearing cordless (DECT) phone. It is dust and waterproof, and if you attach the long antenna (the one on the phone in the video) BT claims it has a range of "up to 1 kilometre". As BT is well-known as the company that offers you "up to 16 Megabits" broadband when what you actually get is 4.5 Megabits, it probably won't come as much of a surprise to know that the maximum range I get is 145 metres. Even that is pretty respectable, though: I can walk to the postbox at the end of the next street and still get reception. The base unit has a couple of short antennae, a red light and two cables, one for power and the other to connect to your phone line. There's no cradle for the handset; instead, you get a separate charging station with its own power cord which you can install anywhere you like in the house. I assume it must use inductive charging (like an electric toothbrush), as there are no exposed contacts. The ringtones are a bit naff, but there are a couple that sound more-or-less like a phone ringing (I really don't like my phone playing music at me when someone is trying to call). The belt clip is a disappointment: it can slide off your belt too easily. Speaker volume is loud and clear, and saving contacts and using the answerphone are both straightforward. I don't have caller ID on my phone line, so I can't try the call blocking options. Its a good phone to have if you're likely to take it out into the garden and forget to bring it back in when the rain starts. Or if you hark back to the days when phones were designed for making phone calls, not checking your emails or playing games.

Brilliant. We live in a very old stone cottage with 2 ft thick walls both internal and external. Dragging the cottage into the 21st century with wifi and wireless phones has been a challenge. For our wireless house phones we had previously bought a long range Panasonic DECT phone 4 years ago but soon realised that this wasn't upto the job and we had to keep 2 rooms away from the base station at the most before they cut out. But as we had spent the money we kept the old Panasonics until the handsets started to flake out. Well that happened at the end of last year and I was happy to look into the alternatives. There wasn't that many which stood out but this BT Elements 1KM phone did. They are largerthan normal handsets to house the extra electronics to boost the signal but after a couple of days we didn't notice the difference in size. What we did notice is that the performance was brilliant. We couldn't test the full 1km range as its a bit hilly where we live but we had it working to 300m outside which is amazing. So it can handle our cottage easily. There is nowhere in our 3 storey stone cottage where they don't work. Outside in the garden they are just as good. I can even pop to the neighbours which is another stone cottage 30m away and they work inside their house. Fantastic. The phone works as a normal phone, with no noticeable differences in use. Normal keypad and a very good and very easy and intuitive phone book. The best we have ever used. They also have a very slim belt clip which is useful but in normal use you don't notice it.We were so impressed we bought another set of two and added them onto our system to make a quad system. They might be more expensive that normal DECT phones but as they work in our situation then we couldn't be happier.

My wife and I both work from home. She in an office in the house and I from a studio about 20 metres down the garden. We both need access to a telephone and we live in an area where the mobile signal is, to put it mildly, rubbish at the best of times. We have tried to get Orange/EE to help but to no avail. Our current BT cordless set up works fine in the house, but is hopeless outside.I was given a single handset of the new BT Elements phone to test for Amazon and, I have to say, I have been very pleased with what I found. So pleased, in fact, that I have just ordered another handset to keep in my studio permanently. The phone is rugged, and is a little bit bigger than a 'standard' cordless home phone.I have attached a photograph to show how it compares, size wise, with an iPhone5.It has pretty much all the features that we need - memories, speed dial, call blocking, SMS and is also able to operate from inside a cupboard at home, so nothing is visible save the handset itself.I charge it overnight and then take it down to the studio for the daytime. Brilliant. It does take a few minutes to set up, but if you follow the on-screen prompts you will have it ready to use in no time.Connection is easy - just wire up to the existing socket and to a mains outlet for the base unit, and take the second unit where you want it and connect to the mains there. The signal between phones is done wirelessly, so no worries about having extension leads in the house. The main features....200 name and number directory6 line mono display which is backlit and has contrast control50 number calls list30 number redial listcall waiting indicator10 polyphonic and 5 standard ringtones to choose fromVIP indicator9 quick dial memorieskeypad lock and secrecy function.

I suppose we ought to confess from the outset that we are normal cul de sac dwelling users of mobile handset phones. We don't have a large unmanageable farm in the pennines or work in a warehouse! We've tried this phone out for everyday use around the house use and it's performed well in the garden, in the kitchen, in the spare room we're doing up and even the storage area above the garage reachable by a ladder! ! the striking feature is of course the handset which does look like a mobile phone circa 1994. This runs most of the features on the phone, and the answer machine is a kind of virtual one rather than a physical button on playback type .we set the phone up very briskly apart from the inevitable typing in your contacts pages which is the only drag in the process. We used it successfully and I was really happy with the performance. The signal is clear all around the house and garden and we had no dropout up problems. Charging was absolutely fine and the handset has already survived a couple of spillages and 2 drops without noticeable harm. So given our type of lifestyle with this is a reliable rugged phone that will happily survive most family ins and outs and provides a reliable and competence service. the retro styling is quite ironic and fun. Given it's a BT product you are a little keyed in to BT services which might cause some irritation but didn't us. We will update the review if we have any problems as time goes on but to be honest I'm not expecting any.

Even better than my last standard BT pair of handsets that lasted me about 5 years. The batteries gave up in the end!Don't be under any impression that you will get 1 kilometer range out of them though. The range will nearly definitely be better than what you have already but, obviously, walls and other obstacles will decrease the range drastically.I live on the side of a valley and I just run out of signal behind my garage which is elevated behind the house. The main phone base is situated in my downstairs middle room and through a supporting chimney breast wall, an external wall, an external supporting wall which creates a garden tier so there's earth the other side of it too and then the 2 external concrete block walls.Directly, the distance I get up to there is about 25 meters away, but through all those obstacles I think that kind of range is acceptable. On another note, this has plenty of choice of ring tones so you can choose the one that's LEAST annoying, internal call function, etc, etc.One thing I particularly like is the "sync" feature. Both phones will automatically synchronise to each other, which means you only have to enter the time and date once and, even better, you only have to enter all of your contacts once and they will automatically be synced to the other handset which saves a lot of time. There are other features but nothing to rave about that you don't get on other similar phones.Overall, I'm happy with themRead full review...

This phone is real a beast, not that I mean that in a bad way, but I do think it's fair to say that a lot of people wouldn't be too happy with it if they were looking for something stylish for the home. But that said, I see this more of a work phone anyway and for this purpose, yes it's bulky, but that also means it's strong and robust and hopefully should last a good while even in a busy work environment.Features wise it's very basic but there's a large directory and that's enough for me. Whilst the range is fine for me and my needs (a lot better than the BT model it's replaced) I'd have my doubts about the 1km range unless the base it outside and there's nothing in-between that and the handset.Just to try it out I took the handset down to the bottom of my small street and it lost signal (with house walls/windows 'blocking' it). Perhaps in an open warehouse it would be okay. One thing I've always noticed in phone reviews is the contradictions on what you can and can't do with a phone (I suspect this may well be because reviews of different models get grouped together) but as far as this model, the BT Elements 1 km Range IP67, goes, you can switch the base ringer off, you can switch the handset ringer off and you can turn the answer-phone off. Before getting the phone I had doubts about being able to do all of those things so I was pretty happy with all of that.

BT may not be the most admired brand for style but for reliable and functional products they usually get it about right. For those looking for a rugged, durable and mid distance caller, this Elements cordless is about on the money. Its build and looks are perhaps better suited to a rougher outdoor or business life than a stylish home phone, it is built to last and enjoy that simple past time of making and receiving calls. The base needs to be situated carefully to get good range but tested over at least 100m it worked perfectly, certainly better than an existing Panasonic cordless which runs out of steam when stepping a few yards from the house. That 1km range is doubtful given the signal was already just starting to break up over 100m - unless perhaps it has a completely unbroken line of sight to the base; unlikely in most scenarios.Good chunky buttons and battery life, even a belt clip for those keen enough. The screen is clear and simple and it'll do all the usual contact lists and answering machine. All very "traditional" ; how times have changed.Fit for purpose if not quite living up to its long distance runner billing.
