I have been running since I was a kid and competitively up until about five years ago when I developed a bad case of plantar fasciitis. I have large feet (Mens 14) and have always run in Asics since they were the most comfortable for me and were readily available in my size. Recently, my son has taken up running and wanted me to run with him. After a few runs, my heel really started to flare up and I knew my old Asics were toast. After some research and leaning on the opinions of my old running buddies, I decided to pull the trigger on these Altra minimalist shoes. I am an old school runner and used to shoes with a narrow toe and a thick sole, so when I first saw these,I wasn't too sure. What I did like right off was how light they were. When I tried them on for the first time I was amazed at how they felt. It was like putting on a pair of socks or surf booties. The shoe literally cradles your foot. While the toe box looks a little funny to me, it feels incredible and really allows for your toes to spread when you plant your foot. The first couple of runs in them were *meh*. My heel no longer hurt after the run, but the thin sole took some getting used to. After a couple of weeks of 2-4 mile daily runs, I am a believer and will never go back to "clunky" running shoes.I think I had to learn how to re-run after switching these. I have found that your body will learn how to adapt to the shoes. For example, I have always had a really hard heel strike when I ran. Forgivable with a thick sole shoe, but noticeable with minimalist shoe. I never really noticed it before, but had to alter my stride, as a result. Since this alteration, my ankles and knees no longer get sore after long runs or the day after long runs.If you decide to give these a go, be patient with them. They take a little getting used to if you've never worn them before. There is also a small break in period. But don't give up on them. They really are worth every penny and have rekindled my love affair with running.

Not a runner, just a middle-aged guy with arthritis in big toes in search of some relief. After some research (see correcttoes.com), I'm convinced that our shoes have been binding our feet like 19th century geisha. However a few companies like Altra, Lems, & Vivobarefoot habe finally bucked the tapered tip fashion trend to make shoes that actually encourage the natural shape of our feet. Altra brands it as "Footshape Toe Box" along with "Zero Drop Platform" which doesn't unnaturally jack up the heel higher than the toes.I still chuckle a bit when looking down at my Altras, but I have to say they are extremely comfortable. They are extraordinarily light and flexible...almost feel like you're not wearing shoes & walking in bare feet. The most interesting aspect is I feel much better balanced with the wide big toe placement (rather like a wider tripod is much more stable.) But best of all, practically every step seems to relieve the big toe joint pressure I was experiencing for so long. The only negative (besides price) I see is that there's not much cushioning, especially in the heel, so if you're on you're feet all day, you may feel some more heel discomfort. However I use a sit-stand desk (which I also highly recommend) and still stand probably 80-90% of day by choice (sitting 8+hours daily is killing us.) The soles also seems to be wearing pretty quickly (although I wear these on the Pickleball court, playing aggressively 2-4 hours nearly every day on a textured surface.) Though they are running shoes with very little lateral support, their low center-of-gravity and wide footprint seems to keep my foot just as stable as my Adidas Ubersonic and Asics Solution Speed FF court shoes.Unfortunately most wide footbox shoes look very odd to me, often styled like hippy dippy moccasins (and good luck finding a proper dress shoe that doesn't bind your toes.) So, I highly recommend these basic black & white sneakers for daily wear.

Great running show, absolutely love them. This is my second pair and I will run in these from now on. I was an avid Asic Kayano wearer for the last 9 years. I would wear nothing else to run in. I have ran a lot of marathons and half marathons in my life and I was ready to hang up my shoes due to injury. Then I decided to try the Altra's because my wife got a pair and loved them, which she is a walker and not a runner. So I saw the Escalante 2.0 on special on here and thought for that price I might as well give them a try. In Kayanos I wore size 13 and in these I bought a 12 and they fit perfect. I started running in these and noticed afterwards my knees and hip did not hurt anymore.I slowly built my mileage up on them and can say they are the best decision my wife made for me. These shoes are light, comfortable, and as I can tell so far very durable. I just put 120 miles on these in one month (The mose I have ever ran in a month) and my legs feel great, Knees have no pain, and I am actually excited to run my 6.5 - 8 mile runs at lunch everyday. Plus I will say this, When I was running my 93rd-100th mile, I set my fastest mile, fastest 5K, and fastest 10k all in the same day. I also beat my fastest pace per mile for the entire run by 48 seconds a mile as well. On this pair I have 230 miles on them and they show some wear and I am figuring I can pull maybe 4-500 miles out of them. I am running all on the road too. I have not tried the Escalante 2.5, I am curious if they fit the same and are any different. I may buy them and try them and compare.

So this shoe fit great and felt great. No complaints about the feel and comfort. Showbox was wide and sole was very comfortable at first. However there was some heel deterioration that created some unexpected achilles tendonitis for me.What I noticed over a couple of months of running was the heel wearing and large chunks coming off a month in running 20 to 25 miles a week. At first no worries because the shoe wasn't bothering my knees or anything, which reading about zero drop that was a perk and intrigued me.After 4 weeks I did notice some heel pain. This progressed for a few weeks until I felt some calf pain, and then go figure tendonitis. At the point my calf started hurting both shoes had a small piece of the heel hanging enough that it just came off.Reading more about the zero drop shoe, although knee problems are avoided, feet / tendon problems can be a result. New tendon problems to me was the deal breaker. Even though I got enjoyment at first, tendon problems and suspect heel support was the deal breaker. Was hoping to get another hundred or so more miles but not worth it in my mind. Had to return to a more conventional running shoe.I would have given this a 5 star rating if the heel held up a little longer and if achilles tendonitis didn't start flaring up. Whether or not the heel deteriorating was the cause, it wasn't worth continuing to train with in my opinion. Still a comfortable shoe, and if you are looking to try 0 drop give it a try.

This is a great shoe. I still like to run 25 - 30 miles a week, with lots of HIIT workouts, etc. Many years ago after my orthopod told me that I would need knee replacements (without a shred of hard evidence), I changed my running shoe lineup to only minimalist shoes (my definition, right or wrong, is equal to our less than 4mm heel drops), and all of sudden my on-going bilateral knee and lower joint pains, in general, went away (and I was a competitive distance runner in college decades ago so I get this stuff - -and I'm a relatively large guy at > 6 feet and >180 pounds). Years ago when Brooks dropped their PureConnect shoe, I bought many pairs for future years of use. Now that they're gone, and I was looking for a new minimalist shoe with plenty of cushioning. Enter this Altra, a recommendation from my twin brother who loves the Altra line for running as well. We both have size 11, normal width feet, so the generous toe box concerned us, but we both quickly understood once we took these shoes for a spin, i.e., plenty of room to splay the toes on impact, super comfortable and light. Now these great shoes are my go-tos for both HIIT and for distance. I certainly hope Altra sticks around and continues to provide this great shoe without a lot of useless, detracting modifications in the years to come, as I think they're close to perfect.

Really great shoes. I run a lot, around 40-50 miles a week. I started running in a minimalist shoe several years ago when I ran less often and over shorter distances. It helped my form a great deal but HEAR ME, if you didn't grow in a culture that went barefoot during childhood then the muscles in your feet will take several years to develop to the point where you can safely and comfortably do distance running barefoot.Enter the ALTRA escalantes. I find them to be the ideal hybrid between a cushioned shoe for added protection to your joints and the barefoot running experience. The ground feel is great, the cushion is juuuuust minimalist enough for great responsiveness and protection. The width really lets your toes splay out naturally. They are great shoes. However, I will echo the sentiment shared by some here. The tread on the bottom does start to go rather quickly. However, not so quickly that they aren't well worth the price asked and also not so quickly that they are outdone by, say, the Hoka Rincón or other shoes that have a design element that cuts the life down from 500Miles to 250-300.I'll try to remember to come back after about 100 miles and update the review but as of now, 25 or so miles in with them (I also run in Nike Pegasus and Hoka Rincón) I would say 10/10 give them a buy.

I had the original Escalante v1 and I was wary of going with the v2 given the many bad reviews it received. But it was on sale, so I decided to took the chance, since I had done already 1,000 miles on my other pair and I needed a replacement (I also use the Lone Peak a Salomon shoe for trail and bad weather, but the Escalante is great for pavement and dry weather, which we have plenty in Colorado).Perhaps coming with that expectations, I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, it is smaller that it is supposed to be, but given the other reviews I had already ordered half a number larger, so no problem. Yes it is slightly stiffer material, but frankly I can't tell if the Escalante v1 was that much stiffer when new.It is surely softer now, but after that many miles that's expected. I've tried them enough time, broke them in, and using them on all my weekly runs (my workout plan has 4 runs per week, with more than 30 miles total, at different speeds and incline). They are great. One thing that is better than the old version is the tongue not being stitched to the side of the shoe. I have a wide foot and the old one ended up always so close to not completely protecting the foot from the laces... The new one is like in any other shoe, so you can adjust (center) it, rather than having to keep it on one side.

What they ARE:Running's a big part of my life and I've run in dozens of shoe models from Asics, Nike, Saucony, and others. These Altra Escalante 1.5s are my favorite by far and I've recommended them to many family members and friends. These replaced my Escalante 1.0 shoes, which I loved; the 1.5s are just as good, with better laces. Believe Altra's marketing--these are actually shaped like a foot (go figure!). The footlike shape, full mesh upper, roomy toe box that allows the toes to naturally splay during a stride, and zero drop combine to form the most comfortable, natural, fun shoe I've ever used. These remind me of my older Nike Frees but with a much better sole design. And the sole material has a good amount of pep (aka energy return) that makes me feel fast. What they're NOT:All that said, make sure these are the right style of shoe for you. They're not for trail running and are unsuited for cross-training...they have low lateral support due to the very comfortable, breathable mesh upper. But for roads and light offroad, IMO these can't be beat for people who don't need motion control or a lot of support.

I ordered these in men's size 10 recently, which is my normal size, and they fit well, mostly, but they were slightly too big, and even though I could make them tight, it still felt like they could move around a bit, which I did not like. Another small con, is that the laces are super long, so I would maybe buy smaller laces for these.I prefer my running shoes to be snug, but not super tight either. As far as performance goes, I took them on a 5-mile test run, and they were very comfortable. I had no blisters, and my time even seemed a bit quicker. I could tell that they require a bit of a break-in, as with most shoes, but after that these will definitely be one of the most comfortable running shoes I've owned.I ended up sending the 10s back and just ordered 9.5s today. I'd definitely recommend you giving these shoes a try and order a half-size down from your regular size (unless your feet tend to swell when you run). In the 10s, I had over a half-thumb of space between the end of my big toe and the shoe-tip, for reference.Overall, very impressed with this shoe!- Shea

I'm an average age group runner but over the past 5 years have put on a lot of miles all of which was done in Altra shoes. I'm somewhere between 20 and 50 miles per week. I burned through many pairs of the One 2.5s which were in my opinion the best shoe ever and I still can't believe they discontinued it. I then went to the Kayante (I think it's good but I'm not in love with it) and have now given the Escalante a try. I may be writing this review a bit early but so far my initial impression is positive. Lightweight and my foot strikes feel good. Plenty of support. Fabric is breathable. I have noticed 1 thing so far regarding the shoes construction.I believe the width at the ball of the toes is a bit more narrow than both the previously mentioned shoes. No irritation yet but I do notice they are a bit more snug. That may change as I put the miles on. I've also tinkered with thinner socks and even no socks to try to find the right solution. I may buy a second pair 1/2 size larger just to see if that makes the difference. One 2.5Kayante

I only started running during the lockdown so haven't had the opportunity to be fitted for shoes or have gait analysis done etc, so it's been something of a trial and error experience for me. I tried two traditional pairs of running shoes from Asics and Brooks which gave me plantar fasciitis problems, then I tried a minimalist shoe from Merrell which felt amazing but was a little hard on the muscles so I was only able to run up to 10k or so max as it was quite hard on my calves.Having done a bit of research, I realised what I was looking for was a shoe that was both zero drop and padded and the Escalante seemed to be an appropriate choice.I've just taken it out on my first run and I'm blown away at how comfortable it is and how natural my running style is in this shoe. I broke my 10K PB straight away and am looking forward to going out at the weekend again with this shoe with the intention of breaking my half marathon PB. I'm converted to Altra shoes now and will definitely get more pairs.

These shoes are excellent quality for the price point. Very light weight feel and cushiony foot bed, almost feels like just an extension to your foot. Toe box is nice and wide, but these are a snugger fit than most Altras as these have a sort of stretchy, form fitting upper. I wear a size 10.5 W in Brooks running shoes and a 10.5 W in these fit me perfectly. However. Keep in mind that this is solely a road shoe, I would not take these on any trail or other than flat surface, because the material of the upper is so thin and flexible and doesn't support the foot from sliding around very well on steep inclines, as well as the thin, flexible soles, so you would feel bigger rocks and roots. The traction is adequate for most conditions, wet roads, gripping gravel, mud, etc. However, much thinner lugs than that of traditional Altra trail runners. If you're looking for a comfy, roomy, light weight road running shoe, this is an excellent choice. I would highly recommend.

I had previously tried a pair of the older version of this shoe on and the upper felt too....sloppy, so I purchased a pair of Altra Torin 3.0 instead. I liked those shoes but I always felt like they were a little to squishy and didn't have much bounce. I purchased the Escalante 2.0 and went for my first run in them today. These shoes are more bouncy than the Torins were and not nearly as sloppy as the previous Escalantes. I was able to take 30 seconds off of my mile time when running 3.25 miles. I know fans of the previous Escalantes don't care for the more stable upper in this version, but I love it. They also look better than my Torins did since the toe box doesn't look so much like a moccasin.Bottom line, if you were buying Altras for the extra wide and roomy toe box, these might not be the version for you. People with smaller to average sized feet will probably dig them.

Update, Feb 1st 2019: just got my 3rd pair today. 9.5 didn't work for me anymore for some reason so I returned and got a size 10. Within minutes of getting the shoes I was out running. I found my shoe mate. This is probably the best shoe I have ever owned. I bought the previous escalante a couple of years ago, ran a marathon and did all my marathon training in them and countless miles. And still haven't destroyed them. Even tried another brand in between and learned the hard way that Altra is where it's at for me.Just got this pair today and all my worries about a bad "sequel" dissolved quickly. The shoe is just as good as the previous model but somehow feels even better.I'm going to run this year's marathon in these babies.

I tend to wear vivobarefoot shoes when I'm not working which are barley wide enough, but when I try to wear them at work on concrete warehouse floors for 8 hrs not so comfy. I've boughten ALTRA Men's AL0A4PEA Provision 4 Road Running Shoe and they seemed pretty wide-ish. So I thought I'd buy theses for work. Sadly these shoes are more narrow than the other ALTRA shoes that I bought, but the mesh that these shoes are made of give it enough stretch that I don't notice and they have enough padding so my feet are not so sore after my work shift. So all in all these are comfy enough that I can look past how narrow they were on my wide feet, but it'd be nice if they came a little wider. ?
