These are the comfortable toe shoe you expect from Vibram, though they missing some details that would really make them a fantastic shoe. I wear the shoe mostly for walking my dog in the mountains in the winter. The Good:Pretty much what you expect as far as comfort for Five Fingers. The insulation works great. I have worn them barefoot on ice and snow and in temperatures as low as 29 deg. F. If your foot sinks into the ice/snow much they do get cold around the toes, especially when slush gets between your toes. They seem sufficiently water resistant (other reviews have treated the shoes with water repelling waxes to improve their water resistance).I imagine if you were running these would be plenty warm in even lower temperatures. The grip on the sole is absolutely fantastic. It is genuinely sticky. It performs as well as is possibly on ice and slick surfaces with out studs or spikes. I suspect like with winter tires this translates to higher wear rate in warmer temperatures. The Bad:Well really it's just some stuff that's annoying and slightly disappointing.Vibram omitted the pull tab at the heel to help with putting the shoes on. Surprisingly, this matters a lot. It makes the shoes more difficult to put on because the heel always gets buried. I've just come to expect these with Five Fingers and the lack of something so simple and helpful is very disappointing. The laces were a poor choice. I say this not because they cause a poor fit, but because they are just lame on a shoe trying redefine what shoes are. First, I hate tying/untying fat sloppy wet laces, and with a low cut winter shoe that's what you get. Secondly, why did they suddenly decide laces are good? The pull locking mechanism on my other FFs are great and the cord is thin and dense enough that water doesn't matter.Sizing:I pretty much agree with the general advice of ordering 2 sizes up. I'm normally a bit loose in a 46 and I don't wear socks so I ordered a 47. When my feet swell the 47 is an exact fit. So If your normal size is snug you'll probably appreciate the extra space from ordering 2 sizes up and the option to add socks for a cold weather shoe makes a lot of sense. The padding between toes is also slightly thicker than normal to accommodate the insulation.

Off to a really great start! Ran 4 miles at a 7:31 min/mile pace in 14 degree F weather in my new Vibram Trek Ascent Insulated shoes that I received today. I own 4 other pairs of Vibrams but these are the first pair that I have ordered online and that enclose above the ankle. As other reviews mention, I went one size up from my normal size to size 44 and they fit perfectly though I am not sure I could get toe socks in. However the wool lining works as advertised and my feet were comfortably warm from beginning to end in the cold run. There was no wind or wet slush so I can’t comment on those conditions yet. The nice thick rubber soles gave lots of grip and yet I still had the same road feel and toe flexion as my other pairs.Along with the insulated Vibrams, I only wore a base layer pair of ArcticCore H3 leggings and ArticCore H3 long sleeve insulated shirt with heattec gloves and hat. My feet were the warmest part of me for most of the run until I got going. The only nitpicking concerns so far are that the toe slits are very deep and I can actually feel them between my toes but they did not rub during my run. Also the laces are ridiculously long and even though I double knotted them they still flopped around while I ran. I would really prefer the “drawstring” setup of my Komodo sport pairs. Last week I ran in 20 degree F weather in my V-Trainers which left an inch gap between the top of the heel cup and my leggings. This is not a problem with the Trek Ascents because they cover the ankles. Also my feet took over a mile to warm up in the V-Trainers but since these are insulated my feet were warm from start to finish. These were $130 but dropped to $118 when I bought them. Shipping was as promised and they came a white plastic ‘envelope’ over the actual Vibram box.So far so great and I will update my review if anything significantly changes.

I am very happy that I decided to buy these shoes. I have been wearing the Spyridons (the first design that makes your feet look like skeleton feet) for a number of years now, and noticed recently that the bottom of them was wearing through. These shoes have a similar feel to the Spyridons, and are just as comfortable as them. The big difference is the water resistance (closer to water proof then resistant) and the warming properties of the wool. The biggest problem I had with wearing Vibram shoes was the cold, wet feet during the wet months here in Oregon. It would appear that I can now wear Vibrams all year long because the water resistance is excellent and the warming is superior to that of the previous shoes I owned.Although I love the Spyridons, I can safely say that the switch was for the better. One last thing, make sure you size one more up. I wear a 42 with the Spyridons, but needed a 43 for the fit to be just right.UPDATE* I have had these shoes from some time now and some heavy rain hit Oregon recently, which was prefect to test if these shoes were as "waterproof" as others have claimed. These shoes are water resistant but they certainly are not waterproof by any means. Water did eventually make its way into my shoes after about 20 minutes or so of heavy rain. It is unfortunate that Vibram has not found a way to make their shoes waterproof, but I am determined to be able to wear these year round. I will attempt to find a product that can make these waterproof and will let you know what happens.Second Update: Used the Nikwax waterproofing stuff on these shoes and they are far more water resistant than before (still not waterproof though). The comfort factor is even better than before now that they are broken in. Its like wearing a warm pair of socks.

First things first, as stated in other reviews, please order these at least 1-2 sizes over your usual VFF size. I normally am quite comfortable in a size 42 but I went up to size 44 based on other reviews and am very glad I did. The extra insulation that makes these shoes great also makes them quite the tight squeeze if you go for your regular size. That out of the way, wow. This is my 14th pair of VFFs and they are easily the tank of the bunch. I wanted something I could wear in colder weather. I have a pair of all leather Speed LRs from REI and those are my usual cold weather wears with some good toe socks but once it gets below 40 the boots had to come out.Plus since those were an REI exclusive and no longer available I'm trying not to wear them as much. The other cold weather VFF I have is the original Flow model. These are basically just a KSO made out of neoprene, extremely constricting and while they have the same insulating factor as wet suit they are definitely not what I would call warm. More like turn your foot into a sweaty hot box. The Trek Ascent Insulated solves all these issues by being tough, and fluffy at the same time. The grip pattern on the foot is absolutely ridiculous. I feel like I could walk over a block of ice in these things and have grip. The toes are actually insulated as well so with some toe socks I feel like I could manage well below freezing temps. Water resistance is another issue but if there is anything wet on the ground I will go back to my boots.Overall I absolutely love these and if you like having a pair of VFFs for all climate conditions these are definitely a worthy addition to your arsenal. Just make sure to buy a few sizes up especially if you plan on wearing socks.

These shoes are considerably warmer than my trail-running vibrams and the tread/material makes me much more sure-footed on ice and wet pavement than in my hiking boots or snowboots. They are not as warm as either my hikers or more snowboots, however, even with thin wool socks like those from ininji. This is just physics-- extremities are hard to keep warm, and digits even moreso. The distance from your core and the bad surface-area to volume ratio is not on your side. Letting your toes work as a unit (in a normal shoe and normal sock) works more efficiently than forcing your little piggies to do it on their own.I run and walk in these guys when the temperature is between 20 F and 45 F-- any colder and I wear more conventional shoes, and any warmer and my feet get sweaty.Construction quality is great. The lacing system gives you tons of wiggle room when putting them on, a must for five finger shoes, especially when you are first "training" your feet. The (nylon?) pulling loops are sturdy and have not given up on me yet. The soles are good, I especially love the way they grip on wet and icy surfaces (and let your foot feel the ground so much better than boots, giving you more feedback before you start to slip). The material is tough, too. Pavement doesn't seem to wear them down as quickly as it did with previous generations of five-finger soles. That said, you will get more life out of these if you run on trails. top is water resistant but not waterproof or water repellent. Snow will make you wet and cold if you're running in snow that is deeper than your toes.

My first pair was very uncomfortable in the left shoe only, on the sole of the foot between the toes and the rest of the foot. I returned them and the replacement pair does not have the same problem and I'm very happy with them. It seems like I was shipped a defective shoe. The advice to buy one size larger than normal is accurate. My size 44 KSOs and my size 45 in this shoe fit my feet the same. I would not recommend going up two sizes unless you're planning to wear very thick toe socks. These are quite comfortable and very nice to run in. I prefer them to my 2011 vintage KSOs for running because the sole is thicker and the thick tread adds some light cushioning. For weightlifting and indoor exercise,I generally prefer the much lighter KSOs.I recommend wearing toe socks with these, especially if you plan to wear them in temperatures below 70 F / 21 C. If I wear them without socks, my toes tend to get chilly. With the toe socks, they're fantastic. I wear the thin Injinji socks and they're ideal for this.My only complaint is that these are not waterproof at all. Step in even a very shallow puddle and you'll feel that cold water creeping into your toes. As a result, I only wear them on days with a low chance of rain in the forecast. I have yet to try applying a waterproofing compound, but I'm not that optimistic that it will make a big difference.

I LOVE how these feel. The reviews are correct: go 2 sizes up, so I went 46 (up from my regular 44) and they fit exactly as I wanted and still leave enough room for toe socks. The external fabric is great and the liner inside feels very comfortable. I've been wearing mine indoors as I just got them to get a feel of fit/comfort - I'll update once I get walking outdoors. Usually vibrams feel tight and take some getting used to after wearing regular work shoes and my feet adjust once I wear them for a few hours. These Trek Ascent feel awesome and comfortable right away...simply amazingly comfortable. These are my 5th variety of Vibrams five fingers.I've had the original komodos ....3 pairs worn for tough mudders and everywhere else...I never found anything better than those for outdoor. Then I got the water shoes - ok. I then also own the spyridon....great but bulky toes. I also have the v-train cross-trainer another great shoe. Overall I need to break in the v-train but they provide great feel on the ground and are stable - exactly what I need for weight-lifting. The komodos by far are the best ever, and then the trek ascent insulated. I would highly recommend the trek ascent for cold weather and casual wear outdoor, and indoors as well - I'm wearing them indoors and they feel very comfortable...maybe warm for indoors, but I love the way they feel.

I love these shoes!!! I wore them on a snowy day and they had great traction and kept my feet warm, however, snow got stuck in between the toes and eventually melted. The water from the melted snow, did penetrate the fabric and wet my toes. My wet toes stayed warm since the wool liner RETAINS heat even when wet, but the wet squishy feeling at the toes drove me nuts.Solution:I treated the shoes first with SOF SOLE Waterproofer, purchased 2 cans, one for each shoe. I sprayed the shoes until they were drenched with waterproofing solution, I focused in the areas in between the toes and on the top of my toes and used the remainder of the cans on the rest of the shoe.I went back out the next day and wore the shoes out in the snow. It took much longer for the melted snow to penetrate the fabric, since the SOF SOLE waterproof acts as a water REPELLENT at best.I let the shoes dry out, and purchased Atsko SNO-SEAL Beeswax Waterproofing. I applied the waterproofing in between and on top of the toes, and the remainder to the rest of the shoes. Tested them again, and now my toes NEVER get wet. Everything stays dry, and warm!!!! It appears that the Beeswax does a better job at sealing the microscopic holes in the fabric weaving pattern. My feet are also still able to breath in these shoes.

Wearing this shoe in NYCs Winter Season....WOW!!! I'm surprised at how Warm my feet and toes remain in these 5 toe insulated shoes! Coldest temperature so far has been 32 degrees and these shoes perform very well. For some reason, I thought they were waterproof. I wore them while working outside in the cold, in the driving rain, walking thru puddled water and muddy grass lawns for a 4 hour period (I'm a TV News Videographer and was doing a Live Shot). I could not tell if my feet were wet or not. I wear these shoes with 5 Toe Socks and I could not tell if water had seeped in or not. The shoe did not respond the same way that regular shoes do when they are soaked. It was not until I finally got home and took off the shoes that I found out that my feet looked like prunes because they had been wet the whole time. This insulated shoe IS NOT Waterproof AT ALL!!! But, my feet never realized it. They never got cold and I was able to work comfortably in the driving rain and cold and mud without incident. So, I recommend these shoes! I don't know what would have happened if I was not wearing toe socks with the insulated shoe that night....Hmmmm.....

Not made in size 9 so 9 and a half left enough room for toe socks which you will need in winter. The shoe is too warm for summer. The beige ones look great and I always get comments in public about how good they look. This is the only fivefingers which elicit comment. These are the hardest fivefingers to put on. The toe pods are very rigid laterally so it takes some foot gymnastics to get that little toe in. There is a hinge at base of toe pods which give flexibilty when walking. The extra 4mm sole depth over most fivefingers is what I wanted and it does reduce sharp stone pain. I have kept them dry so don't really know if they are any good on muddy trails but they are very comfortable when you have them on.They do look great when you wear them and make your feet look normal size rather than the shrunken fivefinger look. Too bulky for running, the Trek Ascent has the same sole if you want thicker soled runners.

I like these shoes! They are warm winter shoes that aren't heavy like bricks as most winter boots are to wear. I would still wear sock with these shoes. My other five finger shoes don't have tie laces, but these lace up shoes aren't bad and they stay tied. The tread is great and I have not slipped at all. I can feel the ground under me more and with big winter boots there isn't as much sensory of the ground. If the snow is real deep I still wear big boots, but for everyday winter shoes these work fine. I have more than one pair of five finger shoes and my feet and leg muscles have adapted so well to them that when I wear regular shoes they fit so uncomfortably that I can hardly stand wearing them.My feet feel like they are in constrictive foot coffins when donning regular shoes. In five fingers my toes can move about and other foot bones and tendons are not in bondage and oppressed.

Five-fingers Trek Ascent are beautifully made but sized very small. I had to change a size 44 pair for a 45 to fit properly, and then had to exchange the 45's for 46's to be able to wear thick Injinji socks. I have nerve damage in my right "index" toe, and at size 45 the right shoe's index toe pressed on the tip of the toe causing pain, so I had to move up another size... but that's my physiognomy, not the shoe's fault.I've had half a dozen pairs of various Vibram Five finger shoes and worn them until I finally destroyed them from hard use. Good, strong, well made and long lasting. What the shoes do do, for me, is get me off my heels and onto the ball of my foot while walking and running.Changed my experience of running. No more shin splints. Get up on your toes while running and walking, and off your heels... it's joy.

I wear a 46, 11.5-12 in my other styles, I will not be able to wear sock with these in a 46 but that's ok the fit is great. I started wearing them, its still in the twentys and they are a little cool but again they feel like a custom glove so my next pair will be 47 to compensate for the socks. I give them a 5 star due to the traction I wish my work boots had this sole design, very good on hard packed snow in the parking lots. I like the style, not so bold but that is not a issue since I now have 5 pairs and cannot wait for summer so I can enjoy the different styles. People are still shocked that I would wear these after 50 years of boots, but give them a go and you will see why I enjoy them so much.Note I don't like flipflops, just could't use to them. Thanks

I have been wearing only fivefingers for about 10 years. I wore 44 for years, and I could buy a replacement pair without trying them on. Now I must try on every pair, some I need 44, some 45, some 46! Some new styles I can't get my foot half way inside no matter what size I try. Some have toe pockets much smaller than another shoe of the same style and size. Quality control has really gone to the dogs. The shoes are not consistent in size or width from pair to pair or from left to right. They used to be.I've never been comfortable in real shoes. I'll continue to use FiveFingers buy I have to try 10 to 15 pair to find a good fit. GET WITH THE PROGRAM Vibram! We pay a premium for your product,I expect a premium product, EVERY TIME!

Ordered these one size larger than I usually wear in VFFs, and glad I did. They’re still a bit on the snug side with socks, but comfortable. First real outing was a rugged 8-mile climb in NH’s White Mountains. I packed a backup pair of Merrells just in case, but never needed to switch. From the rocky trails to smooth, steep granite inclines, the Vibrams felt sure-footed. The thicker sole and toeboxes provide ample protection. Sure, by the end of the hike I was glad to peel ‘em off, but that would be true for any shoes. I’ve since worn them on AT day hikes, they’re now my favorites, even on warmer days and in wet weather. The only downside is that the wool lining, while warm, is kinda scratchy.Had to buy taller socks. ?
