Purina PRO PLAN OptiDerma Dry Dog Food - Medium & Large Adult 7+ Sensitive SkinNestle Purina have produced a lot of new speciality dog foods and this particular formula is designed for your MEDIUM & LARGE doggy friends that have a SENSITIVE SKIN and are ADULT Dogs of 7+ years.Some breeds are more pre-disposed than others to have skin problems, so to have access to a dog food that can be purchased in the Supermarket or Pet Shop, rather than being exclusive to Vet Surgeries, is a bonus.• This food is packed in the well designed Purina way, in an easy-tear, easy open, strong plastic bag, which provides a good size opening for pouring out the contents.There is a well-placed handle at the opposite side of the bag for ease of lifting/manoeuvring. No need to decant the food after opening the bag, as there is a press-seal closure to keep the food fresh. The information on the bag is multi-lingual.• The oval shaped kibble is quite small in size, and will fit easily into the range of Activity Toys that are available.• The smell on opening the sack of food was not especially strong and there was no real smell or residue left on my hands after putting the kibble into an activity toy or the dog bowl.• The shelf life on my bag was nice and long – October 2017.• This OptiDerma food is specifically formulated with ingredients to lessen skin irritation and specifically excludes Wheat Gluten that is often the source of skin problems, though not always. The main protein source is SALMON, and dried egg also contributes to the protein content. The inclusion of fish oil, will also help with your dog's joint health, as well as the skin.• A protein content of 27% is a little higher than I prefer for my dogs, and higher than some of the other complete dog foods.• This kibble has quite a hard crunch to it. Crunchy foods are also helpful for keeping teeth healthy, so the harder the better. However, should you prefer to serve it moist, it can be soaked in a little water and left for an hour or so.• There is a Daily Feeding Guide printed on the packaging and I found this to be particularly helpful. Unlike most dog foods that provide a feeding guide, which is usually based on the weight of your dog, this feeding guide gives advice not only in relation to weight but also to the activity levels of your dog. I think this is such a good idea and hope that other Pet Food Manufacturers follow this lead.Both of my dogs munched up this food with gusto. "Amber", my 12yo Crossbreed, has Salmon Oil on her breakfast meal anyway as it is good for joints and mobility, as well as skin and coat. "Maisy", my soon to be about 7yo petite Irish Border Collie, also has a small amount of Salmon Oil, as a preventative against any future joint problems. This food is eminently suitable for both of them.Neither of them suffered any adverse reactions to the food.Please remember, that when changing over your dog's food, you do need to do so gradually, by slowing introducing the new food into the old and then gradually up the quantity of the new food and thus reducing the quantity of the old food.As an owner I think, like the other Purina Pro Plan specific diet foods, that it is a bit expensive for a 3 kilo bag (RRP currently £16.99, but cheaper on Amazon). Having said that, this Purina is a lot less expensive than the Veterinary Diet Foods sold only via a Veterinary Practice.If your dog is a breed that has a tendency / predisposition to have skin problems, then I think it is worth using this food, as it could perhaps prevent problems.NB - If your dog has serious skin problems, I would advise you to have your pet checked over by your Veterinary Surgeon in the first instance. Your Vet is best placed to diagnose the cause of the problem and to run tests as necessary. A chronic skin condition will probably need medication in the first instance – specific food may only be part of the problem.I have deducted 1 star simply because of the price factor, although it is cheaper than Vet fees!

Purina Pro Plan Dog Medium/Large Adult 7+ Sensitive Skin with OPTIDERMA Dry Dog Food Rich in Salmon 3kgPurina quote this as a high quality food for medium to large dogs.Ingredients.The packaging promises much but I tend to look at the ingredients and make my own mind up.The main ingredient is dehydrated poultry protein not Salmon protein as I would have thought. Salmon is only 8% of the content. This is highly processed and I would like to know more about it. The next ingredient is wheat which is known to cause stomach problems in some dogs. The rest of the ingredients are pretty standard in pet food.I wish pet food manufacturers would give more source information on the packs.Luckily my dogs have never shown wheat sensitivity so I am ok with using this food with them.Feeding.The kibbles are ideal for our standard Poodle crossPalatability.The food was eaten with no complaints and he really liked it. It did not change his digestive transit time or his output. All of this was normal for him. It has helped his coat shine so it does do what it promises. We have also noticed less itching from him. He has a dry skin and it does cause him some trouble but this has helped alleviate the problemOverall.It’s nice to see kibble that is just right for medium sized dogs. I would like more information on the ingredients overall as I am still not sure what the protein content actually is made from. It does help with dry skin and his coat is markedly shinier.Although expensive it works out quite economical to feed Overall, this is an above average food but I would like more information before wholeheartedly recommending it.

The dogs we look after are big fans of this Purina Pro Plan. They are normally on a mix of wet food and biscuit/kibble as they go through so much food, but as two of them are getting on a bit it’s nice to try to introduce a bit of a mix into their diets from time to time, and this Salmon variety goes down well. I have tried them on salmon-based kibble before and they all seemed to go for it, including the one that is particularly fussy.I can’t tell as yet whether any of the dogs’ skin have been affected positively or negatively from this food, but I suspect it might take a bit more than a mixed food intake for a couple of weeks to give any kind of results.I like that the colouring isn’t overlystrong as it really doesn’t need to be and I’d be worried if it were.I read from another review about concerns regarding the amount of maize and grains in the ingredients, which I can certainly appreciate, but as I tend to mix foods and not go 100% for one bag I am less concerned about this. I read previously about a lawsuit in the United States regarding the potential for grain-borne ‘mycotoxins’ that can occur in such grains that could cause adverse effects in a dog’s health, but there was insufficient evidence so the case was thrown out. I’d certainly be wary about feeding them anything with loads of grain-type ingredients, but like I say, personally I don’t feed the dogs a 100% same food diet.All I know is, they are happy with this food and there are no adverse side-effects that I am as yet aware of. As longs as the hounds are happy, I’m happy.

I've used a lot of Purina Pro Plan dog food in the past - all with a varying degree of success. Sometimes they go down a treat while other times my dog turns his nose up and won't go near the food. This time around however the Salmon variant was well received.For those of you unfamiliar with "Purina Pro Plan" it contains Optiderma which contains an expertly selected combination of nutrients to help meet your pets requirements and to help towards a healthy coat and skin. The main source of protein in this food comes from the salmon content and most ingredients contained are natural (so should help with food sensitivity).Some other reviewers have pointed out that the Salmon content is only 17%- while this may seem low - it is infact exactly what is needed for the intended audience of this food. The protein it does contain is of high quality and too much protein in the diet (especially with adult dogs) can be more harm than good.The main problem here is the price. At £16.99 per bag (£5.66 per kilogram) it is not the cheapest dry food on the market by far. It does seem to deliver what it promises and like I said it was well received - however it's hard to tell just how superior this food is over cheaper foods. If it was a few pound cheaper than it would buy it on a more regular basis, however as it stands at the moment the financial impact of using this in the long term is a bit worrying.

The Purina Pro Plan Dog Medium/Large Adult 7+ Sensitive Skin with OPTIDERMA Dry Dog Food Rich in Salmon 3kg arrives in a small but strong standard type plastic bag. I note the ingredients is Salmon (17%), Rice (16%), Maize, Dehydrated salmon protein, Maize gluten meal, Soya meal, Maize grits, Dried beet pulp, Dried egg, Animal fat, Maize starch, Minerals, Dried chicory root, Digest, Soybean oil, Fish oil. The percentage value is good and note Salmon is the first listed ingredient, in summary this is good quality dog food. The meat food content should be the first main ingredient, which in this case it is. The food is medium in size and its fairly aimed at the medium to large dog.My dog is 7.5 kilos medium build, however she did not struggle to eat the food. Two other dogs i fed this to a Jack Russel and a King Charles Spaniel both liked this food as well . The food is fairly neutral in smell and no particular odor was detected. The results on the three dogs so far have been positive. My dogs have reacted well to Purina Sensitive Skin with OPTIDERMA and the results are favorable and positive. The dogs fur coat is shiny and vibrant and the skin is free of irritation. In summary a descent dog food not the good content of Salon in percentage value, this product is recommended.

This 3kg Purina Pro complete dog food comes in a handy re-sealable, strong plastic-type bag.Apparently designed for medium/large adult dogs over the age of 7 years with sensitive skin, this Purina 'salmon flavoured' food consists of small sized, oval shaped biscuits about the size of a finger nail. I didn't notice any discernible salmon smell and the biscuits didn't leave any mess or residue in my dogs' bowls.I have two large, extremely active German Shepherd dogs, aged over 8 years, but who both have sensitive stomachs and sensitive skin. Both are very fickle and choosy when it comes to their food,so trying this Purina complete dog food designed for such dogs was a straightforward choice for me.I know little about the effects of the varying ingredients but I can confirm that both my dogs appear to thrive on this Purina dog food and eagerly await their next meal, always clearing their bowls.Both my dogs' coats shine, and they have shown no adverse reactions whatsoever since using this Purina food, no flatulence has been experienced and their bowel movements have been regular and consistent. Essentially I have no complaints whatsoever and can only highly recommended this Purina dog food, even though it may be a little expensive.

This specialist dog food must have been made with our two Medium to Large (one is definitely Medium and the other - well Large) English Show Springer Spaniels in mind. A picture of one of their breed is on the front!The bag is vacuum sealed so the food stays really fresh. Once opened, carefully, then the bag can be resealed efficiently. Being devised for 'Sensitive Skin' is a great idea, as some dogs can suffer from irritations that are hard to deal with, and difficult to pin blame on for any one thing. So having a food whose recipe excludes Wheat Gluten us a good start. Being formulated for 7+ year old dogs too makes the choice easy for dog owners whose pets fit into this category - or nearly so - in our case.The food is surprisingly small, just pellets the size of vitamin pills. So it could suit older dogs with chewing problems but the pellets look more like cat biscuits - which of course dogs love!The taste is clearly much appreciated, our chaps wolfed it down and woofed for more. No problems with digestion, all is as one might wish when tidying up outside, so here, it is a great success.

I've got two dogs, one of whom is on a diet. She has dry food (and it's working) but this leaves her brother a bit jealous that he's not getting the same food. Hence it being great that I could try out this Purina Dry Dog Food.I can't say that I have minutely read the ingredients like some reviewers have. If you have great concerns about that kind of thing have a look at those reviews or the ingredients list.It was certainly wolfed down by my cocker spaniel. Normally new food is met with a little bit of an inquisitive demeanour but he wolfed this down straight away. Over a week in it's had no ill effects, he's continued to eat it and he's as full of beans as he's always been.The other claimed benefits (skin/coat)etc are a little harder to "prove" but I know the effect other salmon products have had on my dog's coats over the years so there's no reason to think that their lovely smooth coats would be any different with this one.

I have been feeding my two dogs with this food, one a black Labrador and the other a springer spaniel. The dog-food has a strong smell which my dogs seemed to appreciate more than I did. I had no problem with them eating this food; they wolfed it down just as they do with any dog food I give them.Looking at the ingredients, salmon in this dog-food was lower than expected. There is a lot of wheat in this dog food which I was concerned about as my spaniel can sometimes have stomach problems with loose stools, however I have to say that eating this dog food really seems to agree with her. Her stomach problems are greatly improved with this food.Both dogs coats have improved,with the black Labrador’s coat improving the most; she is now soft and glossy. I think this dog-food would be quite expensive, especially if you have two dogs. Saying that I am very pleased with the results of this food. I would give this product a high rating.

I give it four stars because it has helped Mr Scruff's coat , stopping it being so flaky and casting as much. Mr Scruff is just recently turned 9 and is termed a King Charles Spaniel but he rates himself a 100% human . So he is also not to keen on dog food! These were acceptable to him Decent sized Kimble and easily digested with is fresh meat. I missed some in with his normal food and continued this over a period of a week, as he has a sensitive tummy . After that I had no problem getting him to eat them and after a week I noticed some differences in his coat.As I love him dearly I would pay anything to get him healthy , but this does contain maize as others have said,and often dogs with sensitive skin also have sensitive tummys - like Mr Scruff . So if it didn't have maize in it I would rate it a 5. The price isn't a problem just as others have said there are other products with excellent ingredients about the same price.

We've tested this on my brother's dog who's getting on a bit now and has developed skin allergies and has a bit of a sensitive stomach at the moment. We knew that Purina has a good reputation and we use the brand for our cat, who has a very tricky digestive system. Bailey has only been having this for just over a week but he's enjoying the food, and like our cat who has IBS and who manages much better with dry than wet food, this is making a difference to Bailey already. He seems happier in himself and generally more comfortable. We checked out all the ingredients before we gave it to him and it seems to be a decent blend of natural ingredients that will support his digestion,and the fish oils and vitamins will help his coat look a bit glossier and already seem to be helping his skin. Clearly this is something you want to monitor over time, but with just over a week under our belts things are looking good.

Purina Pro Plan Dog feed from the Nesle company, is aimed at older -7+ medium breeds like the spaniel whose picture appears on the bag and who suffer from sensitive skin. Our old boy who is nine now. Doesn't suffer too badly, apart from periods when he scratches a lot. He is a bit arthritic and has a small cyst under his skin. I thought that giving him this special mix would be worth a go. It won't cure anything as it is a feed after all and not medication. If it helps alieviate symptoms then why not!As with nearly all dogs, he wolfed it down so no problems with taste or smell. Hard to say whether it will actually be of benefit unless you keep a dog on a regime and observe their condition over a period of months.you can only take the claims of the makers at their word and hope they are being honest?

Well I do not love it, but the dog does.....We have a very fussy, spoilt dog and he is extremely difficult to feed. At first he was given a sample to try but he simply turned his nose up at it. Then we put some in his bowl with his wet food, as a mixer, and he "wolfed" it down. Given in this format it is a great success. I was amazed to see that the kibbles were quite small. I thought they would be larger.Overall, if you can get this dog of ours to eat anything, then it must be good.Come to think of it, we have had considerable success with Purina having tried many varieties.I would point out though, that he is only four and the variety he tried is for older dogs,so there may be an ingredient cut back for a slower metabolism, but he is a bulldog, so he is slow at the best of times.

Our greyhound who is not food orientated, and generally picky, eats this with very little encouragement. Due to a miscalculation we had run out of her previous kibble by the time this arrived, so rather than the sensible phased introduction, she went over to this food all at once. There was no effect on her digestive system at all, and the end product remained firm and rolls well off the shovel! The plastic bag is one of the easiest to get into that I've come across, with a tear strip across part of the top, and a heavy duty zip-lock fastening hidden beneath it. It isn't a problem, but I'm surprised that the kibbles are so small bearing in mind is labelled as medium/large adult.I'd say the individual kibbles are about the size of my little finger nail.

I've said before that I never really understood fully the need for food tailored to particular breeds/ sizes. But straight out of the packet, our Spaniel was more than happy. The size and texture of the kibble is perfect for him ( about the size of a raisin), and he knew it was tasty - he was sniffing and licking in anticipation! Normally, he can be a little fussy, and despite food being pout down twice a day, he can be disinterested until hunger really takes over and leaves him with no choice but to eat. This Dry small dog food from Purina has proved and instant hit with him, and we are delighted.There has been no problem with his digestion when transitioning,we just mixed the dry food gradually and he is his usual cheeky chappie self. Fantastic.
