Purina PRO PLAN Medium Adult OptiDerma Dry Dog Food - Sensitivie SkinNestle Purina seem to be producing a lot of new speciality dog foods and this particular formula is designed for your doggy friends that have a Sensitive Skin. Some breeds are more pre-disposed than others to have skin problems (eg the West Highland White Terrier), so to have access to a dog food that can be purchased in the Supermarket or Pet Shop, rather than being exclusive to Vet Surgeries, is a bonus.• This food is packed in the well designed Purina way, in an easy-tear, easy open, strong plastic bag, which provides a good size opening for pouring out the contents. There is a well placed handle at the opposite side of the bag for ease of lifting/manoeuvring.No need to decant the food after opening the bag, as there is a press-seal closure to keep the food fresh. The information on the bag is multi-lingual.• The oval shaped kibble is a medium sort of size that will suit various sizes of dogs. It may be a bit small for the very large/giant breeds though, in my opinion. (See photos below for size) It will also fit into a good range of activity toys.• There is no real strong smell on opening the bag, and there was no real smell or residue left on my hands after putting the kibble into an activity toy or the dog bowl.• The shelf life on my bag was nice and long – November 2016.• This OptiDerma food is specifically formulated with ingredients to lessen skin irritation and specifically excludes Wheat Gluten which is often the source of skin problems, though not always. The main protein source is Salmon, and dried egg also contributes to the protein content. The inclusion of fish oil, will also help with your dog's joint health, as well as the skin.• A protein content of 27% is a little higher than I prefer for my digs, and higher than some of the other complete dog foods.• This kibble has a reasonably hard crunch to it and is a good size which will fit into a lot of activity feeder toys. Crunchy foods are also helpful for keeping teeth healthy, so the harder the better. However, should you prefer to serve it moist, it can be soaked in a little water and left for an hour or so.• There is a Daily Feeding Guide printed on the packaging and I found this to be particularly helpful. Unlike most dog foods that provide a feeding guide, which is usually based on the weight of your dog, this feeding guide gives advice not only in relation to weight but also to the activity levels of your dog. I think this is such a good idea and hope that other Pet Food Manufacturers follow this lead. Both of my dogs munched up this food with gusto. "Amber" my 10½ Crossbreed has Salmon Oil on her breakfast meal anyway as it is good for joints and mobility, as well as skin and coat. "Maisy" my 5½ petite Irish Border Collie doesn't have Salmon Oil, as at present she does not have any joint problems.Neither of them suffered any adverse reactions to the food. Please remember, that when changing over your dog's food, you do need to do so gradually, by slowing introducing the new food into the old and then gradually up the quantity of the new food and thus reducing the quantity of the old food.As an owner I think, like the other Purina Pro Plan specific diet foods, that it is a bit expensive for a 3 kilo bag. Having said that, it is a lot cheaper than the diet foods sold only via a Veterinary Practice. If your dog is a breed that has a tendency / predisposition to have skin problems, then I think it is worth using this food, as it could perhaps prevent problems. If your dog has serious skin problems, I would advise you to have your pet checked over by your Veterinary Surgeon in the first instance. Your Vet is best placed to diagnose the cause of the problem and to run tests as necessary. A chronic skin condition will probably need medication in the first instance – specific food may only be part of the problem.I have deducted 1 star simply because of the price factor, although it is cheaper than Vet fees!

The dog, an older bull terrier, wolfed down this new Purina food, which is always a good place to start! Time will tell whether there are beneficial effects of the OptiDerma combination of nutrients on his sensitive skin (some foods do give him dandruff and itchy skin).Take a look at buying the food on subscription to reduce the price per bag (currently £17 for 3kg). Unlike the chicken-based Purina dog foods, at least this one is more expensive than feeding your dog fresh salmon every day so on that score it is good value. This complete dry pet food is part of the new Opti-nutrition range from Purina designed to meet the specific needs of different sizes, ages and conditions of dogs by the inclusion of targeted combinations of nutrients given names such as OptiAge, OptiDigest and OptiDerma. They're a convenient way of giving your dog all the nutrients it needs for a heathy balanced diet (and also dry foods mean drier stools that are easier to pick up in a doggy waste bag!). It can be hard to know whether the claims made for various dog foods are valid or not without being a doggy nutritionist, but there are some clues to go on, and of course the starting point has to be whether your dog(s) will eat the food or not!The pack contains a helpful feeding guide based on activity level as well as weight; different dogs have different activity levels and dogs do tend to become less active as they age; that's certainly the case with the bull terrier. The packaging is well-designed with a good-sized opening, a grab handle and a re-sealable top (to prevent the food going stale or smelling out the kitchen) which is easy to use.Purina is a premium brand at a premium price. You can smell the salmon in the food and it is the first ingredient on the list (14%). Total protein content is 25%, which also includes deyhdrated salmon protein. As well as protein, the food contains grains (rice and 4 forms of maize - but no wheat), soya, chicory, fish and soybean oils and animal fats (fat content 15%), dried egg and so on in different proportions to other foods in the range - presumably that's the OptiDerma combination. (There is also the mystery ingredient called simply "Digest"!)I don't have any problem with the use of dehydrated salmon protein to boost the salmon content. However, I don't understand some of the other ingredients and why they're added; there may be good reasons, but they're not explained and I'm not a doggy nutritionist so can't tell the difference between a helpful additive and a cheap filler that's bulking out the product. Some queries. The pack states prominently on the front that there is no gluten from wheat; however, the ingredients state there is gluten from maize so, if your dog is sensitive to gluten, without knowing more I presume this would cause problems.I couldn't work out from the packaging what makes this food specially designed for medium-sized dogs but not appropriate for small or large dogs; perhaps it's simply kibble size? Also, I don't know that I have the skills or knowledge to judge the effectiveness of the added "OptiDerma" composition designed for sensitive skins. I do worry a bit that the enthusiasm with which the dog wolfs down these sorts of pre-prepared foods means they're a bit like MacDonalds - food that has a lot of science in it, tastes great so you want more and is healthy up to a point but shouldn't be relied on as the main source of food, just as a treat. Please remember when introducing any new food to a dog's diet to do so gradually, mixing it in with the existing usual food in gradually increasing proportions over the course of a week or two. That helps to avoid problems like the dog wolfing down them vomiting up the new food, or getting the runs. This is particularly important for dogs with sensitive digestive systems.Loses a point for seeming to be expensive based on the ingredients it contains.

The Purina PRO PLAN Dog Medium Adult for Sensitive Skin with OptiDerma Rich in Salmon Dry Food - 3 kg is a large bag and my dogs loved it! Here is what I thought:^^ Opti DERMA is for dogs with sensitive skin needs, and has been thoroughly thought out to a professional level - scientifically.^^ 3 KG is a decent quantity, especially when my pets really look like they are enjoying their food. However, it is expensive for what it is and I do not ever give my dogs just a dry food diet so this does last me a lot longer. You see I like to vary my dogs diet supplying kibble like this as a mixer with fresh food (home cooked and specially prepared) and some cans of wet meat, too.I think that is why they are so fit and healthy - variation! (My eldest is 15 this year).^^ My larger dogs are both oldies, and therefore do need extra care with their diets as they are more sensitive to some things these days than they used to be, which is why I do look for products like this to try. Always allowing them a little at a time and not to change their diet suddenly with large quantities.^^ For medium sized dogs with sensitive skin. Dogs love it!^^ Developed by Purina vets and nutritionists, so a trusted brand I have heard of.^^ Supposed to keep my dogs mind active and alert for longer so if anything does this I am happy to help them by providing the tools for the trade.Overall:I am happy to provide this to my dogs knowing that the brand is a trusted and reliable company and of course, it's a bonus when my dogs love it, since it is then money not wasted but indeed well spent. Don't forget, I do not give my dogs just this dry food diet and insist on a balanced and varied selection for my pampered (but well looked after) pooches.

Purina PRO PLAN with Optiderma is designed for use with dogs who have sensitive skin, or who produce excess dandruff. The ingredients include extra salmon, and fish oils, to help improve the condition of the skin and regulate oil produced in the glands. As such, dogs eating this may gradually start to become less itchy, or shed less dandruff, due to the skin targeting nutrients.Skin drying out seems to be associated with age in dogs. As the dog becomes older, the balance within the skin cells goes awry, and oil is produced at different rates than before. My dog is getting on a bit now, nearly 12, and has started to get dry flaky skin. She doesn't seem particularly bothered by this, but I was happy to try this food to see if it made any difference to her at all.Having tried this for a while, I can honestly say that I cannot note any difference yet, but my dog is very happy to eat it. I like the fact that it feels as if I am trying to address a need, although the evidence from my dog is that it hasn't been that effective thus far. She isn't a scratchy kind of dog, so I cannot say whether her skin feels any better from her end of things, but her regrowth hair seems a little softer, so perhaps it is gradually starting to support the skin cells and hair follicles.Overall, I like the fact that this food is trying to address an actual need in dogs, who are all different. I think that it is very well packaged, with an excellent resealable top to prevent unnecessary odours in the house. My dog obviously seems to rate the taste very highly, as she is prone to gobbling it up very quickly. As such, I would recommend this food, it is worth trying and seeing if it helps your sensitive skinned dog.

Purina PRO PLAN Medium Adult OptiDerma with Salmon (3kg) is a well balanced dry food for medium sized dogs and can be fed through any stage of your dog's life. It is easily digested so this dry dog food can also be fed to dogs with sensitive digestions, it is specially formulated for dogs with sensitive skin. This dog food has ingredients that promote a healthy immune system, healthy skin and healthy joints and coat. After I opened the packet of Purina PRO PLAN, I immediately noticed a not unpleasant yet fairly strong smell (sort of a cross between tuna and a chicken oxo cube). The kibbles are brown, medium sized, semi hard and oval in shape. When our dog was younger she was an extremely fussy eater, now she is older this is not the case. She will eat most dry dog foods as long as it has a reasonable smell and taste. However, our dog may like any food but unfortunately not every food likes her, nor us which is more to the point as she often suffers with terrible very 'smelly' wind.I measured out 200g of food and poured it into her bowl and then called our dog who when she realised it was dinner time came in running. And without any hesitation at all ... She ate the lot. Then we waited.I am pleased to say this time the 'wind' stayed away.Time will tell regarding whether this dog food improves our dog's health and vitality. She is already healthy and has a fairly glossy coat.

Purina Pro Plan is a premium priced dog kibble, but I was impressed with the salmon content which at 14% is much higher than other, rival foods containing salmon. The kibble also contains 14% rice, which makes it suitable for dogs with sensitive digestions as well as those with sensitive skins. The kibble is a decent size and shape for medium sized breeds (Spaniels, Beagles, Patterdales). Our two dogs, (Springers, f.9 and m. 2) did really enjoy it, though they are not the most discerning consumers. They ate every bit that was in their bowl and looked for more. The kibble is a good size and shape to be used as dog treats; most dogs will of course take anything that is hand-fed,other than something containing a tablet. The food is very practically packaged with a tear off corner and is re-sealable for freshness. There is very little aroma compared with some foods, although the dogs were able to detect something through a sealed packet. The kibble is a light beige shade,A nice change for our two - the female dog does sometimes worry at patches of skin, so we will be keeping this for her primarily while the younger dog tucks in to his usual kibble. Both dogs are used to a dry kibble diet and generally have very firm stools, we noticed no changes when using this kibble. The younger dog tolerated it well, he doesn't always take very rich kibble well.

Im very lucky my chocolate lab enjoys her food, some times a bit too much. She has a fantastic shiny coat but she does suffer with dry skin. Purina Pro Plan OPTIDERMA includes a special combination of skin targeting nutrients proven to support healthy skin and beautiful coat and selected sources of protein to help reduce possible skin reactions associated with food sensitivity. One of the main ingredients is Salmon which gives the kibble a slight aroma of fish. It is not unpleasant and your dog will love it. My lab is 24KG and is at the top end of weight recommended. I would say the kibble is smaller than I would like for her as she can wolf her food down too fast.I like to add some hot water to make a gravy and then cool with cold water. This helps with her digestion and slows down her eating. There is no added colours to the food which I also prefer as the only reason colour is added is for us. The feeding guild give full detail of what your dog needs. It also gives suggested amount depending on how active your dog is. There is so many products now a days it can be hard to decide what will be right for your dog. Also you have to take price in to it as well. My labs skin has improved and the itching has reduced. Her coat has a great shine and she looks great. Happy dog = Happy owner.

This 3kg bag of dry dog food is, like the other Purina products I have received, well packaged. You can open the bag and re-seal it, which helps keep it fresh and stop it smelling – although this certainly does not have the strong smell of other dog foods, despite being salmon flavour.Ideal for medium dogs, this contains the following ingredients: Salmon (14%), Rice (14%), Maize, Dehydrated salmon protein, Maize gluten meal, Maize grits, Soya meal, Animal fat, Digest, Dried beet pulp, Dried egg, Maize starch, Minerals, Fish oil, Dried chicory root, Soybean oil and has full instructions on how to introduce the new food to your pet. So far, I have seen no bad reactions to this brand, but obviously all animals are different and so you obviously want to introduce this gradually. This helps care for your dogs joints and is specially formulated to care for their skin; with a combination of skin targeting nutrients to help support healthy skin and a healthy coat and reduce scratching caused by skin discomfort and food sensitivity. As such, it is ideal for dogs with a sensitive tummy as well as sensitive skin. Overall, I think this is a good brand and wish other such bags of food were also packaged as well, which really makes a difference when you are storing them.

If ever there was a time for cutting corners it's with this pack. A moment looking at the packet instructions, shows you to cut off the top corner, so as to allow a free flowing delivery of the kibble and the chance to use the resealing facility. This does work well. The complete dog food comes in very small ovals or possibly fish shapes, the dogs loved wolfing them down and really appeared to enjoy the fishy taste. The smell isn't too strong. From time to time many pets get dry skin, or a small dandruff problem which can be caused by mites, parasites, so check out first that your dog hasn't got a problem with creatures. Once they are all clear then a food such as Purina Pro Plan could be a great help. There is nothing to be lost by trying this brand, maybe at first as training treats, to see if they agree with a sensitive disposition. Our dogs have cast iron digestions but still I appreciate the fish protein they are getting and like the fact that it is made without gluten. The brand says it helps support healthy skin, bones and joints. So if your dog likes it, all the better!

Whether the Purina Pro Plan for Sensitive Skin is actually improving my dog's skin it may be too early to say. He suffers from occasional dry flaky areas, a bit like dandruff which seem to come and go. He enjoys the Purina Pro but so far, after a week or so, has shown no noticeable improvement. That said his stools are fine with it and he's shown no sign of stomach upset.Apart from the "special"added proteins which may or may not help with his skin issues, the Purina pro has fairly typical ingredients and nutritional values for kibbles at or around this price range. In fact you could quite easily find equivalent quality kibbles a fair bit cheaper. So for me the £45 per 14kg price tag would only be worth paying if the Purina Pro definitely did improve our dog's skin problem. Of that I am becoming more and more doubtful. For other dogs with different issues it may be just the ticket though. I suppose all you can do is try it and see.

A great, consistently sound, quality dry dog food from the trustworthy brand of Purina. My brothers Malamute Huskies remained underweight/too slim despite feeding them high amount of quality food (Royal Canin, Arion, Hills, James Welbeloved etc). After the switch to Purina Pro Plan they steadily put on several kg's, the conditions of their coats have improved to a healthy, glossy and strong, plus they really enjoy the food! In addition, and quite interestingly, they have gone from eating around 600g of the other brands to around only 460g of Pro Plan (and still maintaining a healthy weight without over feeding). The other dogs throughout our close and extended family (ranging from Labradors and Springers to a collie and a tiny Dachshund)also been in flourishing and in tip-top condition on this food. Highly recommended, and although not relevant here, even my 3 former cats thrived on Pro-Plan.

The Purina PRO PLAN Dog Medium Adult for Sensitive Skin with OptiDerma Rich in Salmon Dry Food - 3 kg in a sturdy bag that you can keep the food in and is re-sealable. I note the first ingredient is Salmon (14%) and the third ingredient being Dehydrated salmon protein. Dehydrated salmon protein is used in the animal feed industry and there are strict guidelines in the usage in feed products, no adverse comments are noted. The pellets are of a small size and s;ightly elongated as opposed to round which is just suitable for our dogs. The food has no particular smell or what not particular noticeable which is good. The 12kg dog i gave this to found this food agreeable. The food has had a positive effect with healthy coat and joints and I can report the results as being very good indeed and highly favourable.

Dog enjoyed this and the salmon made a nice change from chicken for him. He doesn't suffer from eczema per se, but the breed is prone to dry skin if care isn't taken. His coat has maintained an especially lustrous sheen and he has scratched less (so I guess he did have a few itchy patches that I couldn't see through his thick coat, just not flaky or anything serious). The chicory has been fantastic for his digestion as before feeding him foods with it, he was prone to looser stools and flatulence, so it's something we look for when choosing a dog food. Pricey, but like the other foods in the range, seems to be worth it. On a side note,we had to board this weekend and the kennel owner commented on the dog's beautiful coat and asked us what we were feeding him as it was obviously high quality.

Very good quality 'dry' dog food with a decent meat content. Ideal for those dogs who have sensitive skin- one of our older dogs has developed this problem- and we find salmon content invariable helps it. Bit pricey but when we use Pro Plan in particular, we find our dogs fill up quicker so you use less, which makes it more economical and you are guaranteed a good quality feed. We use a wide range of this 'Opti' line of products and you get good sized food chunks for whatever dog size your particular type of Pro Plan is targeted at- it's not too dry and smells pleasantly meaty- and for ease of use it comes in good, sturdy, resealable plastic bags. Never had any problems with Purina dog food and this line is an excellent one.If your dog takes to it, you're on a winner.

This seems like a pretty well balanced dog food and you can certainly smell the salmon on opening the packet. The kibble chunks are designed for medium to large dogs, so if you have a smaller dog it's worth looking around for the smaller size (less than 10kg dogs). Smaller dogs will probably be fine with this but will find it harder to eat due to the size. The fish oil seems to be the most likely beneficial ingredient for skin, we've actually been using a separate oil in our dog's food. It can, however, cause some unwanted smells from some dogs depending on how their body processes the food, we certainly found out dog occasionally smelling strongly of fish some evenings, which is worth noting, but it won't affect all dogs the same way.
