Ahh the old Metaxa amphora, this an old friend that I can just curl up in front of our wood fire on the sofa on a winters night and just ponder why I’m drinking what is marketed as a summer time tipple on a cold mid winters night. Back when it was called amphora and not 7 star although it did have 7 stars on the bottle we had just moved house in the 80s and in the new house there was an old leather clad suit case left behind by the previous owners so I opened it and out rolled 2 very very old bottles of Metaxa amphora one was from the 60s and the other was from 1952 of cause if I buy or come across old booze I never ever collect it as it was designed to be consumed and in any case a collectorcan look at the empty bottle but yeah I consumed them and it has to be said the flavours were different compared to the Morden Metaxa 7 star, less sweet and more heavy on the secret Greek herbs with a lot of rose water flavour and more barrel interaction. It could be argued the old 7 star was closer to the modern 12 star only a little more heavy on the secret Greek herbs which is a real shame because the older 7 star tastes better than its Morden counterpart which raises eyebrows it has to be said.

I first had this brandy what seems like a millennia ago when I first went to Greece. Unfortunately I was not able to go back to Greece until the end of May this year. To Zakynthos. I was a bit stunned at the serving of this brandy (WOW!!!) but, nevertheless enjoyed it with my coffee after dinner. And boy did I enjoy it every night for the week I was there. It is such a smooth brandy and unlike French or Spanish it is not harsh.I brought a bottle home from Duty Free for my son and daughter in law and they loved it so when they were due to visit me I. . sent for a bottle. OK so the brandy arrived well on time but I was not entirely happy with the packaging. It was in a plastic case inside a cardboard box but somehow the cap of the bottle had come loose and there was brandy all over the place. Otherwise I have no grouse. It arrived on the Friday whereas Monday was given as the delivery date but I would have been severley miffed if it had not been delivered until the Monday as I paid quite a lot extra for "next day" delivery

the best quality brandy ever ,you must taste it your self,a very smooth drink ,i would say better than french brandy.i first tried this in 1990 i was given this as a gift from a greek taverna we went a lot to at the end of our holidays, since then i have recommened this to friends they all agree it is a drink we all look for at duty free even in turkey oh it is better than the 6 star brandy this one tends to be a bit to fruity for me ,you must try this 5 star see for yourself.my son bought us one last xmas fom amazon it just seems to be hard to get old of ,for years i tried local supermarkets but just couldnt get hold of it ,then to my surprise i find it here on amazon great they know goodquality.

I bought both the 5 and the 7 versions. They are both good - not like a French brandy at all as they have sweet Samos wine in them, and other things. They're both about the same strength as standard spirits. The 7 star is very smooth and a good flavour. The 5 star is more of an "experience" - it's more firey at first, but the fruity flavour follows and is more marked than with the 7 star. And the flavour lasts in your mouth (is that what wine buffs call a long finish?). When it goes I'm ready for my next sip. I have only drunk this as a sipping drink - I've no idea what you might mix it with. Really nice. I like the 5 star for its after-taste,and the 7 star for its smooth sipping experience.

I really like this it tastes sweeter and of caramel slightly,I prefer it to French brandy I think its quite a different drink The 7 star is very nice, I would love to try the 12 star to see how different it is,but am more than happy with the 7 star really, just being greedy wanting to try the next one up, this is a lovely drink. I had to add to my original review ,having now bought and tried the 12 star,my opinion is that although it is lush,I really like this one just as much and in a blind tasting or indeed a tasting where I know which is which I can't really tell the difference ,others might be able to but I honestly can't so I am more than happy to pay less to buy this one.

In Greece the favourite Metaxa is either 3 or 5 star. They are a little less refined than the higher star varieties but have more characteristic flavour. Once you go above 5 star it becomes just another brandy. This 5 star is spot on the same as is available in Greece and if you know and like Metaxa you will not be disappointed. A little annoyance is the description of it being 40% alcohol. It is not, and to the best of my knowledge never has been 40%. It is and and has been, certainly for the past 20+ years 38%. Not the first time I have pointed this out but Amazon and the vendor seem to ignore the inaccuracy in the description.

3* is for extreme medical emergencies...like cleaning your teeth.5* is for giving to other people'7* is for savouring after a good meal at home12* is not for sharing it’s for sipping with a loved one. This 7* is in lieu of none being available @ Hannia Airport back in September. And it’s not stocked at any bricks & mortar retailer...they complain they get undercut...?BUT the image shows the BLUE CAP..supplied... THE INFERIOR YELLOW CAP....I’ve never ever seen it in 30 years. It’s not the eye-watering real thing. It’s a weak imitation like a cheap port DONT BUY IT

I bought 2 of these for Fathers Day from Amazon as its difficult to get hold of, and as it went down really well with the recipiants i am now ordering some more for my Husband as we have had it bought for him from friends that went to Greece and he enjoys the odd tipple, when he saw id bought it for a gift he was " wheres mine?" so im now ordering some more for him, and as i deal with Amazon quite a lot its a site i trust, i would recommend this product and buying it through Amazon, and it only took 2 days to arrive....bottoms up x

Metaxa Greek brandy can be a bit of an acquired taste, but it is a taste that I recommend people work on. It is actually a mixture of distilled spirit and herbs, apparently, unlike French brandy. The Greeks drink it with ice, but I prefer it as it comes out of the bottle, in a brandy balloon shaped glass. They also make a Seven Star Brandy, which is even smoother, and also very acceptable. This is a nice alternative to traditional brandies, and certainly doesn't give me heartburn, as some of the others can do. Recommended.

If vodka doesn’t do it for you anymore and brandy no longer makes you randy, maybe it’s time you went a little more exotic. Metaxa 7 Stars is the smoothest or all Metaxas, so if you haven’t had Metexa before you would be wise to start with the 5 star version so then you can truly appreciate this one. After a few of these you’ll want to dance on tables, smash plates, eat Gyros and be bailed out by the rest of the EU. Then you can do it all again tomorrow. 5 stars! Or should that be 7?

If you are expecting a conventional French brandy, go elsewhere because Metaxa 7 star puts a new slant on the style. It is very smooth - akin to French brandy costing at least 50% more than the price of this spirit. The hints of honey and fruits from the muscat that it claims to include come through beautifully on the after-taste, along with hints of whatever ingredient "X" Metaxa put in to the spirit.A wonderful and unique, and very smooth, take on brandy.Enjoy - please.

First tried in 1977 when serving with the UN in Cyprus. This is the first purchase since then, and I was not disappointed, it tastes the same as I remember it, very smooth with hints of orange. I am not a Brandy drinker, more of a single malt person. To be honest I do not care for brandy that much. But this I finished within 3 moths of purchase. I normally take 8-10 months for a malt. All in all, a very pleasant and affordable Brandy. 5 star version.

If you like Hennessy or Courvosier, you will like this. It is very similar in taste to a fine cognac, just not as well known. This is a spirit you take straight up. It's not a mixer of any kind. Terrific if you have a cold because it will clear your lungs right out. I grew up in Astoria, Queens, the largest Greek population outside of Athens and had this many, many times. True Greeks drink more of this than they do of Ouzo.

Metaxa 5***** is the best of all the Metaxa brandies in my book. I previously favoured the Metaxa 7 star until being encouraged to try 5 star way back in 1976 while visiting a taverna on the Island of Hydra - It has a finesse that the others lack, this brandy is not a throat burner like some others it is velvet smooth with a bouquet of lush Greek herbs spices and flowers - simply superb sipping from a balloon glass anytime.

Not to everyones taste, but those who drink it, love it.To the uninitiated: 3 Star Metaxa is paint stripper!7 Star Metaxa is for TouristsApparantly, you can now buy TWELVE STAR! For the pretentious, I presume, 'cos 'they can afford it!'Now 5star Metaxa is just right! Not rough, not too smooth, it's just right - and Eleven Million Greeks would go along with that! So, when in Athens, do as the Greeks! "Yammas"!
