BB-8 was first seen on the big screen less than 2 years ago, and yet he has become a fan favourite. I’m involved in the droid building community (I’m building a full size R2-D2) and there are dedicated builders making superb BB-8s too. Despite spending hundreds of pounds and hundreds of hours on my R2-D2, this LEGO Star Wars set is the first droid I’ve completed – and it’s awesome! The box is large and contains 6 backs of bricks, and the instruction manual. The bags all represent distinct phases of the build, and once each bag is complete you get to see BB-8 take shape. The instructions suggest a build age of 10 – 16 years, my kids (both aged 8) assisted and they did okay at building the side panels, but the main mechanism and the head are trickier as they aren’t symmetrical and contain some fiddly pieces such as wheels/cogs.This took me about 3.5 hours to build, I’m sure an expert could knock it up in considerably less, and many will take their time. Once together it feels solid and satisfyingly weighty. Also – it’s beautiful. The lower sphere is impressively spherical considering it’s made from LEGO bricks, each of the side panels is different – just like in the film. The orange is vivid and contrasts nicely with the white, the detail is perfectly noticeable and the unit stands on its own and feels very stable. The head is superb – the radar eye at the front gives him personality and again, the detail is excellent. He is instantly recognisable. But – there’s more! This isn’t just a handsome ornament, it’s a functional droid….…The panel on BB-8’s left-hand-side can be turned, this makes his head rotate. Not only does it turn but it also wobbles in rocking motion forwards and backwards which mirrors the movement in the film when he moves around. I wasn’t expecting the movement to look so film-realistic. In addition to this, the panel on the opposite side can be turned to cause his blow-torch to pop out and give a “thumbs up”. These are really exciting additions which add a great interactive element to the droid. The droid itself sits on a smart base (constructed as part of this set) with a minifigure and info-plaque, as per the other Star Wars sets. The droid is sturdy – which is good as once folk know that he has moving parts – everyone will want a play!In a nutshell: A LEGO build which really captures the spirit of fun I used to have with LEGO as a kid, this BB-8 looks fantastic, and the moving head and thumbs up add extra magic to a brilliant build. This is not cheap, but compared to other LEGO Star Wars sets it represents great value for money.

I love BB8 in the films, so decided to splash out and buy this model, and I have to say I'm really impressed. The build was really interesting to make and I spead it out over a few afternoons (maybe 5-6 hours in total) though you could complete it much quicker. What made this model especially interesting was the internal mechanisms. Two of the side panels can be turned - one which brings out his lighter (like in The Force Awakens) and another to turn his head. I was a little concerned about the head gear system when I put it together as it was a bit stiff, but by the time it was completed all seemed to work great. To add even more character, they have also made the head sways back and forth which helps to recreate how it moves in the film. The instructions were fairly clear. A couple of times it told you to add 6 bricks ar once, but only showed you 1 of the locations so you had to play spot the difference with the pictures to find out where to place the other 5. I certainly wouldn't let a younger child assemble it without supervision unless they are experienced with other Lego models. Lego were also smart enough to colour code the 4 sides inside the model, so you could always tell where the front and back was.The model comes with the stand (which I'm not a huge fan of) but it rests well on the bottom of the model so I will just put the stand to one side. If I had to fault it in any way, I would say that it would be nice if the lighter door closed when you retracted the lighter, and the head could have done with a bit more detail, but that's being really nitpicky. For the record, I bought this when the price had dropped to £65 and I feel that was value for money. At £80 I would say it's a tad expensive, but it depends how much you enjoy BB8 and Lego.

We have received a mini-figure of the droid, BB-8, in other The Last Jedi Lego Sets, but this is a much larger model. It is not quite as large as it appears on the box. I could cup the body in my hands quite easily and I would say it is about two thirds the size as the picture. It is aimed at 10-16, has 1106 pieces, a really large instruction box and six bags of bricks. This is not an easy build, but my thirteen year old son did it unaided, so I think the age suggestion is about right. There is a kind of skeletal cube in the middle, containing the pieces which help this model ‘move,’ plus the panels and – of course – the head. The head moves really well and cleverly looks almost weightless and very lifelike. The model has four ‘cogs’ on the sides. The back one is static, but the two on the sides help this model move. On one side, you turn the cog to make the head move back and forth. On the other side, the cog releases a little panel at the front and the ‘little torch,’ from the film version pops out. You do have to push this panel closed, but it is still pretty impressive.Unlike other Star Wars model sets there are no prints. The stand has some sticker information and a minifigure of the same model. Overall, great fun to build and it certainly does not lack playability; although it is meant to be a model really and my son has used it as such. Saying that, it does stand alone and the cogs are fun to turn. The head uses a kind of rubber band to show that weightless, realistic movement and the set is fun to build.

UCS category BB-8 Lego build. This set is a must for a Lego collector. If you have the UCS R2D2 build you will most likely want this to go with your collection. It is very impressive and looks awesome. It took my twelve year old around two hours to build this and he was really satisfied with the end product. It comes with a stand and it is roughly 26-27cm high. It has some really nice touches to it like the welding torch. The head rotates and wobbles just like the BB-8 from the movies. Truly awesome build, yes it has many small pieces and at over 1100 pieces it is not for a youngster to build as it is a bit intricate and if they get the colours and pieces wrong,it wont look right.I do believe this is geared towards adult Star Wars fans. I know it does not say UCS, but it looks like it. I must admit it would go great with UCS Millennium Falcon 75192.I personally love this and it goes with my R2D2 build. My son currently has this in his room and his friends always have a play with it and mention how great it looks. It is a show piece in any child's bedroom, although you'd probably find it in an adults collection.Truly superb and worth the price, but most of all it looks awesome.

Lego appeals to a wide range of people, and rarely is it as evident as with the Lego Star Wars model of BB8 from the Force Awakens and Last Jedi movies. Of all of my many Lego sets dotted about the house there are two that always get the most comments and reaching fingers. BB8 and Wall-E, both so universally well liked that they’re on display in our hall instead of much larger and grander models. Strictly speaking, BB8 is from the Ultimate Collector Series (UCS) line of Lego Star Wars sets, which usually come with a large jump up in price from the regular kits that are usually sold in more locations. However, this UCS set is actually very good value for money and is available in most shops. As a build,it’s quite enjoyable. It’s a decent size and has some challenging sections so takes much longer to finish than the cheaper sets so you do get good value for money. There’s a little bit of repetition when creating BB8’s round shape but it’s certainly not a boring build. When complete, you’re left with a fantastic model. Plenty of moving parts and articulation that make BB8 fun to play with. It’s one of my favourite Lego sets and at its mid-range price comes highly recommended.

My son who's seven got this as a gift. He was delighted. BUT. For a kid, it's important to note that this is a sort of adult build display type model, with not much playability. He said "I'd give it four, because it could be improved to move around on wheels. When I finished it, I felt quite happy, but I also thought I kind of wished I'd got another set that I could more play with."The model itself he built really easily and quickly and so I'd say any experienced kid could do it. He went wrong once but fixed it himself without adult help. "It is has got a lot of white Lego! It is interesting to build because there are loads of cool pieces and a mechanism inside it to make the head spin aroundand the electrocutey thing push the door and come out."The best features are "an actual swivelling head and the mini BB8." (It comes with a minifigure sized BB8.)I think if you are looking for a gift for a kid this might not be the one, unless they are Star Wars nuts. Someone else chose it and it was the kindest choice but for a kid, after construction, that's sort of it. The other reviewer who said it looks great on the shelf sort of summed it up....

My wife loves Lego kits, and as a Star Wars fan her eyes lit up when she saw the BB-8 model in a shop. It's not as big as the R2-D2 model she built a few years ago, but she enjoyed it just as much. All in all, it took her a few afternoons to build, but if you put your mind to it you could do it in a couple of hours or so, but like me she prefers to take her time, do a bit of the build, then put it away when she starts to get a bit tired or makes mistakes. The finished model is nicely detailed and rests on a display stand. The head rotates and moves forwards and backwards, and although the base doesn't rotate for obvious reasons if you turn one of the panels on one side a hatch opens on BB-8's front and a rod appears, with a blue plastic flame on the end, mirroring the amusing "thumbs up" moment in "The Force Awakens". The finished model stands about 26cm tall and 16cm or so wide, and the display stand adds an extra 10cm or so to the width. A very enjoyable build, and the finished product looks great too.

Verified PurchaseAs you would expect from Lego excellent quality.I bought this for my daughters 10th Birthday, she had already completed the Millennium Falcon and the First Order Star Destroyer so I was looking for something a bit more challenging for her. After shopping I decided on the BB-8 Robot as this has a 10 – 16 age rating. She completed this within a day with no problems. Even though she completed this in good time, she thoroughly enjoyed the building process and was proud of the finished look. Personally I think this item could have its age rating lowered to reflect the build difficulty. The finished item looks great, with a moveable head and pop out welding torch, stand with a little description plate.Quality product that looks great, fun to build. Would definitely recommend this to any Lego fan.

Over 1100 pieces of gorgeous Lego'ness !! If that wasn't a word, it is now !Make your own UCS BB-8 in glorious Lego and display him & his Minifigure version with the custom stand & info panel. All packaged in a large box any child and many adults will welcome with open arms, clear & easy to understand schematic / diagrammatic instructions and all parts bagged up. Aimed at early teens upwards, an experienced Lego enthusiast could cope with some parental assistance and would no doubt be occupied for several evenings.Nothing to fault here with this UCS set, working actions, life like head movement & great design all come together to allow playability or display with a great sense of pride &accomplishment.Well done Lego

I missed out on the UCS R2D2 set a few years ago and i have been kicking myself since. As soon as i saw this i knew i had to have it!The build was enjoyable and the and the insides are very impressive. The way the head works is great, there is an elastic band included in the build to give the head a wobble effect like in the movies. I also love the "thumbs up".The finished model looks great on my shelf and is a good enough size, i like that is has the UCS plaque but a little dissapointed it is not officially UCS.Overall for the cost i think its well worth the money (in lego terms) and would recommend to any star wars or lego fan.

A great piece of Lego but very fiddly to put together , teeny tiny pieces of Lego but very strong once completed , the Lego set BB-8 in currently on display on our welsh-dresser and was put together by my lovely husband , construction did take time and instructions a little bit confusing , but once on display BB-8 looks lovely and will look great on display in any room for any Lego crazy star wars fan collector ... like my children and husband , price is good as well because you get a huge Lego collectible figure inc a teeny tiny BB-8 at well .

This BB8 Lego set build a large BB8 model , with a collectors stand and attached mini figure.I got this after a price drop and it has been fantastic value. Took a good few hours here and there and was a lot of fun.The finished model has a head that wobbles and fully rotates (controlled from a spinner on the left side) and front hatch that opens and from which a torch opens out to mimick the "thumbs up" gesture from The Force Awakens. It makes for a fun model, great when the relatives kids around , and looks great on display.

Right, this wasn't for me so what I put here is exactly what I've been told...."brilliant, brilliant, brilliant". We've had the Yellow Submarine and a couple of Star Wars/Star Trek bits. All great, but this one was "brilliant!!!" You get the drift. I was out when the building work was done, and it took the best part of an afternoon, but I think an enjoyable afternoon, for him and the cats. Instructions easy to follow, nothing lost in the process. Over all and obviously money well spent.

Fantastic lego set - undoubtedly one of the best models I've purchased and my 9 year old loves it! The build was interesting, the design and look is just superb and the movement of the head / opening of the compartment are great touches. Expensive yes, but worth it, especially if you can get it for discounted price (some retailers have reduced it to £55-£65 range)Overall, absolutely recommend for any star wars fans, young or old!
