I have to say that this is a really good idea by Lego to encourage learning numbers whilst playing. My niece and I have been playing with the set all of this morning since it arrived and have managed to play some really good games with it. We have had fun playing with the set whilst also managing to have an educational element at the same time. There is a booklet enclosed with the set which gives some ideas of structures to build and games to play. We built the little house to start with and I would choose a picture brick and place it in the window, we then counted the pictures together and my niece would then find and match the corresponding number brick by putting them on the little van (which you need to build also)and 'driving' it up to the window (we also swapped this around to the number brick in the window and picture brick on the van). If she was right then I made the little puppy jump up and down and excitedly bark at her and we would then start again with a different number. When she was wrong I made the little puppy 'whimper' and we would then find the correct brick to match the number and picture together and then of course the puppy would be happy again! We also played a little adding up game, again by using the number bricks and corresponding picture bricks so that she could use the picture blocks to count out loud and add them together easily. The set comes with a little dog character, man character, van base with wheels, 3 flower pieces, a window and frame, 10 number blocks, 10 picture blocks and 29 other building blocks in different colours. The bricks are as you would expect for Duplo as in they are nice and chunky for little fingers and fit together easily. The colours are really nice and bright to draw the eye and the little pictures on the bricks are well defined to enable easy counting. All in all I would say that this a good product and a very good idea by Lego.

I got these beautifully made bricks (what else would you expect from Lego), for my four year old daughter to help her with her counting. They arrived really quickly as you would expect with Amazon's great service. My daughter getting only a very few packages raced to open the box, and her little eyes lit up when she saw the Lego logo. Slight hiccup when she then realised they were big bricks, because as she said "they are for babies". So she stomped off in a sulk. Well what can you do but lead from the front? So a bit later I got the bricks out and started playing around with them and when my daughter said she wanted to play with daddy and the bricks I looked as if to say they are mine, and she of course was all the more interested, and the rest as they say is history. From that point onwards she loved them and really started to get the hang of matching the numbered brick with the colour coded partner that also had the same number of items on it as the numeral indicated - brilliant and so simple. This small set includes a dog and human figure as well as some bits that enable a rudimentary house to be made. It would of course benefit from a few more bricks to help with the building effort, although you should be cautious as having too many of these will of course attract the attention of James May, and before you know it a Lego housing estate will have sprung up around you - no offence James, but all these primary colours really could be too much of a good thing! If you are a new parent and haven't come across these bricks before they are far superior to cheaper imitative makes, and they are very safe for children.

Like countless others I grew up with Lego. It was just a basic set but I played with it for hours. Of course you COULD play for hours with Lego because it is practically indestructible (people say that cockroaches are the one creature that would survive a nuclear explosion, if that's true they will almost certainly be found living in an house made out of Lego) unlike most other toys that usually ended up broken in the dustbin a few weeks after Christmas. What wasn't around when I was a kid though was Lego Duplo, which the internet informs me first appeared in 1969. I hadn't seen a Duplo set before this one but I have to say that I am very impressed with it and more importantly,so was my four year old daughter. Visually it is a very appealing toy. The colourful individual pieces are a bright & eye-catching and they are perfect size for young hands. There are pieces with numbers on which match up with pieces which depict that number of items (stars, apples or cars for example); young children love to learn numbers so this is offers an excellent means of doing so. The set also contains a few other pieces such as a dog and a Lego person which most kids would enjoy playing with too, although to be honest I would have liked - and expected - the set to contain a few more. This is a perfect toy for five year olds and under, being both fun and educational. Unfortunately the manufacturers have done nothing to remedy the big problem that I encountered countless times with Lego when I was a nipper - it still very, very painful when you step on a piece when you are wearing nothing on your feet!

This set has a little bit of everything: car base, person, dog, window, fence and flowers so there's lots of add on play value to any existing duplo. The man included can fix onto other lego in a sitting 4 piece mode or standing 2 piece mode. The dog can also attach to other lego bricks with its feet.Duplo is a very high quality toy. I've been buying it for 11+ years and have never has a piece break or the design fall off. In my experience you can also clean the items in the dishwasher with no adverse effects. It's chew proof (not puppy proof though) so suitable for the under 3s.You must have a base plate for set. The constructed number pieces fall over a bit like dominos in play without it,which as you can imagine is a bit frustrating for a 2-5 year old. I quickly had to run for a base. There are not many 'construction' pieces - just smaller bricks - so to make a decent house or corners you do need to supplement this set. It's great to see some really educational lego and some useful number bricks and matching item bricks. I'm sure I'll use the numbers again and again. It fails a little as it's very easy for children to match the corresponding numeral and item bricks as they are the same colour. It's more of a 10 x matching colour exercise than a counting the items on the bricks and matching them to the numerals lesson.Recommended for the numbers. You can make up your own games and house numbers with them.

Well, my little boy and I have just opened this up and we've had a good hour or so of entertainment from it in the first sitting. I doubt that anyone is anfamiliar with Duplo as a product but for the uninitiated, we're talking big plastic blocks with bobbles on top that make them stick. Yes, that's right, it's like big Lego bricks!Anyway, this set is very much like the other Duplo starter sets with the slight difference that it has bricks with numbers on them (And corresponding bricks of the same colour showing a matching number of items (example - the number five is printed on a brown brick and there is a matching brown brick with a picture of five caterpillars on it). This adds a nice little educational touch to the toy.To be honest though, my little boy (who is usually up for doing number games) was far too excited by the building blocks and didn't really pay attention to the numbers, despite my attempts to get him interested. But, we still had great fun building a car, a house and some trees, then a rocket so it was still very much a success. At the time of writing, Amazon are offering a fairly hefty discount on this which makes it very good value for money. Even at the RRP, I think it's good value but my wife reckons you can do better elsewhere for the same price (though she's perhaps not quite as big a LEgo fan as me). Either way, this set comes highly recommended.

I asked my 4-year-old what she thought of this Duplo product and she said, "It was fun."She likes to match the numbered bricks with the corresponding bricks that have the same number of symbols on (like matching the number 6 brick with the brick with the 6 apples on and the number 7 with the 7 flowers etc.). Then she lines them up, or builds them up, in numerical order. And that is the educational part of the toy to which my only gripe is that the symbols can't be split up so sums are not easily doable. But you can work around that. Also the toy can help with motor-neuron skills, especially of younger children in the 2-5 age range of the toy.As well as the numbered bricks there are many other bricks (58 in all),including a dog and a man, and an instruction book which has some ideas in it for number games you could play with the bricks or things you could build with the bricks (the box says it has 10 ideas and 6 activities in). We've just built the little house and bed for the man and put the stars brick on the roof to indicate night-time. My daughter has just taken off the stars brick to make it morning time.Lastly the Duplo bricks are of course compatible with other Duplo products so can be combined with bucket sets, say, and the bricks are highly durable as you'd expect. They'll last for when my next daughter, currently 4 months, is ready to play with them.

I remember watching a documentary about educational toys and someone very sensible said that you can't improve on a box of bricks. There is a place for toys that make noises, flash lights and move, but there is nothing as good as simply playing and using imagination. However, Lego are surely onto a winner with this, as parents, more and more, demand educational value along with play value. This box of Duplo is the excellent value it always is - there are two characters and a base with wheels, to make a car, along with other play pieces and lots of bricks. Some of the bricks have numbers printed on them - 1 - 10 and there are also matching bricks, the same colours, which have pictures on them matching the numbers. So, for example, there is a white brick with number 1 and a matching coloured brick with a picture of 1 teddy. As well as stacking, building and playing, therefore, is the opportunity for colour and number matching. The bricks fit together well and are colourful and offer lots of play value, as well as learning opportunities. It is aimed at 3 - 5 year olds and my four year old daughter and her 3 year old friend had great fun playing with it. My daughter has also used the number bricks to 'teach' her toys when she is playing school. Great fun, well made, with the added extra of learning numbers/colours. Highly recommended.

Duplo is one of those classic toys that every child enjoys. It is a great construction toy for younger children. As she tipped it out of the pack my 2 year old shouted, "Brilliant, I love bricks".This set provides plenty of bricks (about 60) with some nice specials - a man, a dog, a window, a car. This set is big enough that if it was the only duplo you have, there would be enough to play with. However the major twist is that some of the bricks have numbers on the side and others have groups of items on them. The idea is to encourage use of numbers and counting. It works well. My daughter was happily playing with the bricks and calling out some of the numbers as well, "Where's one gone", etc.The beauty of this is that the child is being numerical without it being taught in a structured way, instead they are simply coming across the numbers within the context of playing.Duplo is virtually indestructible for small children and can be quickly and easily cleaned in a dishwasher. At £15 or so, this is great value for a toy that promotes so many important developing skills - fine motor function, construction, imagination and numeracy.

This is just as good as it's always been and this is a great set for little ones to start with Lego building. Duplo blocks are just like normal Lego but bigger and easier to put together and take apart. This set has numbers and pictures on some of the blocks to add another educational dimension. It's robust, it's simple, durable, colourful and fun and best of all, any other Duplo sets you have or buy in future will be compatible and the more Duplo you have the more possibilities there are as to what you can build. There is not loads of blocks in this set, Duplo is fairly expensive in my opinion, you don't get very much for your money in terms of quantity, but as there will potentially be many years of enjoyment and it may well be passed along to a younger child in years to come then it is great value in that respect, particularly these days when so many toys are easily broken and end up in the landfill before long. Nice to see that Duplo is still just as it was and lego still make this classic building toy series.

Duplo has been around for over 40 years, and is primarily for pre-school children, the large pieces are difficult to swallow and as they get older and move to Lego the pieces are still compatible, the smaller Lego bricks will click onto the larger Duplo ones. This is a durable toy, my children played with Duplo in the early 1980s and we still have the pieces waiting the next generation, it will never lose its play value. This set has all the essential play pieces, including a sweet dog, a "worker" and a wheeled truck. It also has a useful innovation in that the bricks have numbers and graphics on, e.g. number 5 on one and 5 worms on another. There are a number of matching games that can be played e.g.all bricks face down turn one over and then find its partner etc etc. This set has enough pieces for creative play and the pieces are virtually indestructible, if they get dirty they can be washed in a dishwasher. If you have pre-school children you can't really go wrong with this.

`Play With Numbers' from Lego Duplo is an outstanding playset for early learning. The bricks are large enough for little hands to hold and build with, making this an excellent tool for teaching children ages 2 to 5 to count and recognise numbers, can also be used for simple addition and subtraction. Imaginative play is helped by the included figure, dog, wagon base with wheels, fence, flowers and window. What you will find inside the box:10 number bricks from one to ten, 10 picture number bricks (e.g. 10 yellow stars), 3 flower shapes, 1 figure,1 dog, 1 fence, 1 window and 29 bricks of mixed sizes. All in bright colourful mixed primary colours.Comes complete with booklet containing large colourful pictures easy enough for a child to follow unaided. My daughter (aged 5) had great fun building the house, tree and car and there are many more ideas included for your child to try.All in all a great product to keep your little one amused for quite a while. Great value too.

My eldest daughter Katie has her own daughter. Always curious & learning at an amazing rate, (they absorb everything like sponges at two & a half don't they),.So Katie has been watching & playing alongside her & these are her comments:I have always loved Duplo since I was young and in 20 years it hasn't changed. My 2 year old daughter was thrilled to play with this set when she was given it. The bright numbers and pictures drew her in instantly. She is counting more and more and since being given this set she uses it all the time to count the pictures as she builds. Not only with the lovely colours and pictures you get a really sweet boy and dog figure and a car, fencing & flowers to play with too.So there are many different ways to build and count at the same time.I would definitely recommend this item to anybody and would buy as a gift for either a boy or a girl. This set will no fail to impress. A must have!

This is aimed at helping 2 - 5 year olds learn about counting in a very basic way. And as far as it goes it does exactly what it says it will do. It also says it has 10 ideas and 6 activities, which are all laid out in the insideSo it is spot on in doing what it purports to do, entertain and educate. Lego and Duplo are thoroughly integrable and as such a child's imagination never sees the limits of arbitrary ideas and soon enough we had made some sort of Space shuttle in half an hour or so using refugees from a previous box. This is a great way to get kids thinking and learning about numbers, whilst it contains a fair few pieces, there is only one `Lego person' , who looked a bit lonely so we went and got some more, but that aside another great product from Lego. Oh and a little dog which was really appreciated. If you have Lego this is a great addition, but as all box products will stand up on its own.

This is a great example of how good LEGO can be both for education and for general play - we loved it. Our road testers are aged two and four (and thirty four!).What we liked: there are loads of educational ways you can play with this: you can match colours, you can match numbers with pictures, you can practice counting. Our 4 year old found it a really fun and stimulating way to play at counting. The book has some great ideas for getting adults started such as making trucks to drive the matching number up to the window containing the picture. At the end of the day - it's LEGO so you can combine with any of your other blocks to your heart's content and when they get bored of numbers just build a giant robot...What we didn't like: nothing!LEGO fans!Would we buy it: definitely; perfect for a birthday present, star chart present etc. Boys and girls (and adults) would love it!

Review from my friend CarlThis is a good starter set for any child aged 2-5, as well as being Lego, it also comes with an activity book to help your child learn numbers and to count. There are blocks numbered 1-10 and also blocks with pictures on them, for example 4 ducks, this is very good for any child learning numbers for the first time or a child learning to add up numbers.I have 3 children aged 2, 3 and 5. They all enjoyed this set as it was able to provide enjoyment for all 3 of them no matter what they wanted to play.I would recommend this set to any parent as it is reasonably priced and you can always build on it with other Duplo sets.I could not fault it as provides enjoyment to children and helps build not only their imagination but also their numeracy skills. I rate this set 5 out of 5.
