First a little history ...In 1810 an inventor, Peter Durand, received a patent from King George III for the world’s first can made of iron and tin. In 1858, almost a half century after … the can was invented, Ezra Warner patented the first dedicated can opener. This design became known as a “bayonet and sickle” type can opener. It worked by puncturing the can with the bayonet portion, and then the sickle portion would be used to cut and remove the lid.And finally the review ...My old and trusted tin opener had finally given up working and was unceremoniously chucked into the bin after a couple of weeks of cutting myself on jagged edges that really shouldn't be there.

This can opener with its soft grip is absolutely brilliant! The one I have is meant to be modern but it’s not a patch on this beautiful beast. With a bit of pain in my wrist I find it difficult at times to open a can when it has no ring pull. But this is a breeze to use. All in all this is my new best friend in the kitchen. The sturdy build quality and chunky soft-grip handles make this a good addition to the cutlery drawer. It’s a powerful opener without being unnecessarily large, and has no fiddly plastic parts, so cleaning is easy and there’s little risk of snapping anything.It’s not a geared opener, so there’s just two rotating parts – the turning handle and the cutting wheel. It clamps firmly onto the top of the tin and the large turning knob is easy to rotate. Importantly, a feature which I much prefer on openers, the cutting wheel goes into the top of the can lid rather than the side. I'm not sure what they mean by 'compact' but this is a standard can opener just like the ones you've known and loved in the past, with the benefit of soft grip handles.The opener is actually pretty good at opening cans without leaving rough edges, we've tried this on tomatoes, tuna and a few other cans, holding it to the side of the can, and it cuts cleanly without any sharp edges. The twisting part is annoyingly just metal so could be a little more comfortable to turn, but it's not bad.

Replacing a broken, old fashioned can opener with this one is so good, the softer grip helps you to keep the can in place (usually opening tins of pineapple and spilling the juice), the twisting mechanism opens the tins effortlessly, and the grips help you place the cutting edge in the groove of the tinVery good, would think if you have problems with grip, this could make it easier for you to open tins

My 87 year old mother who has severe osteo-arthritis in her hands and shoulders was absolutely delighted with this easy-use, soft-grip can opener. She said "I'm unable to use metal pull-ring cans. This one is a pleasure to use. No more frustrating half-open cans when the opener stops working halfway round the edge of the can! this design has really made life easier."

Most cans now use ring-pull lids, so it is not that often you need a can opener. I like this size as it takes up less space than larger can openers. Easy to use, cuts well, easy to turn. I found the handle not as comfy as the description led to believe, but it did the job intended and did it well.

A good sturdy tin opener.I like the cream and crome colours, very stylish looking in design.You just turn the little knob at the side manually and your tin lid get cut open ( as you'd expect).A nice addition to my kitchen utensils.5 stars
