For any home which has a gas boiler or fire (or indeed, burns any sort of fuel indoors), a carbon monoxide detector is a must. Carbon monoxide is rightly known as a silent killer, given that it has no smell and is not detectable by humans until after it is too late to do anything about it. You may note that BRK make a number of different types of carbon monoxide detectors, of which I have been able to try out the CO4000 (this product), along with the CO850MRLi.All of these carbon monoxide detectors have broadly the same general specification i.e. they are rated at 85db (very loud!), have a test button and have a five year guarantee. However, there are clearly some differences, otherwise there wouldn't be a need to sell so many different products! As far as I can tell the main difference is limited to the following:- The "MRLi" suffix would appear to indicate that the alarm requires mains power and comes with a rechargeable lithium backup battery which is designed to last for 10 years whereas the alarm without the "MRLi" suffix is not mains powered and requires 2 AA batteries.Given the above, it can therefore be identified that this carbon monoxide detector is not mains powers and is solely powered by 2 AA batteries. Finally, whilst you may not have come across BRK as a manufacturer before (I know I hadn't), they actually have significant experience in the manufacture of carbon monoxide detectors and it is also reassuring that all of their alarms comply with BS 50291-1: 2010, which is the safety standard for carbon monoxide detectors in dwellings. Accordingly, provided it is properly installed, this product should leave you in safe hands.

First Alert produce a good range of home safety products with their CO4000EN model being an entry-level carbon monoxide alarm. This type of alarm has become cheaper over the last few years so it now makes sense to have more than one fitted at home. This is a good value unit which is very compact, so it is suitable for taking on holiday too, and it can be used almost anywhere around the home. This model comes complete with two AA batteries and once they are fitted the unit takes a few minutes to warm up – once fitted it should then be tested about once a week for safety. The unit itself should be changed as per the instructions (write the installation date on the back)and the batteries should be changed about once a year for continued protection– a low battery alarm alerts you when this is required. The unit can be placed anywhere but I would recommend mounting on a wall and an optional wall mount kit is included. Although some other no-brand-name models can bought for less I would recommend paying the little bit more for a proper branded product, such as this one, which may save your life! This is my forth carbon monoxide alarm and it was the easiest to set up - a good design, easy to fit and at a reasonable price – recommended.

I was a little surprised that the item I was sent wasn't the same as in the picture. I'm familiar with the First Alert brand, so took reassurance from that that this was a quality product. The item I received looked identical to the picture, other than it carried a brand name BRK. The instructions carry both brand names, so perhaps they are one and the same. A little confusing nonetheless. There's perhaps a little bit more reassurance of quality that it is supplied with Duracell batteries. The instructions are fine and help you determine the correct positioning in your house. We have two in place; one for the boiler and one for the fire. Of course I haven't been able to test the functioning of the unit, other than to determine that the alarm is nice and loud.I did check the certification and it has labelled as compliant with BS EN 50291-2:2010. I'm no expert on this stuff, but a little bit of research tells me that this has been superceded by a 2018 standard for home use. This may be an issue for some. Otherwise this is an essential item that every home should have.

This is a fairly hefty carbon monoxide detector that clearly means business. Nicely presented, even down to the fact that good quality batteries are included, it’s an item that does inspire confidence that when it comes to your obligations to have CO monitors as a business, or just if you want the piece of mind of a CO monitor in your home, then this ticks the box. It’s loud, when you test it, for sure. I have neither the equipment nor the bravery to deliberately test out its response to a genuine CO situation, but I’m confident enough it will do its job. It’s easy enough to mount, with all the standard fitting bits included, and no surprises.Other reviews have reported saying that there are no English instructions included.I can confirm that the box we received *does* have an English instruction pamphlet, as well as a Dutch one, for whatever reason. The instructions are nicely comprehensive and discuss the best placement and so on, and aren’t just the cursory ‘the button marked test is for testing’ note that you might get with some others.

This is a nicely made and compact alarm. Of course, it's virtually impossible to properly decide how well this actually works until it goes off for real, but it feels well made with some nice details. It is supplied with batteries, and is ready to go.There are a few neat touches - the battery cover will not fully close unless batteries are in place so it's much harder to forget to put fresh batteries in if you remove them. A big button on the front allows you to test it, and you can replace the batteries without having to take the device off the wall. One thing I didn't like is that the front of the alamr says GREEN POWER/ RED ALARM. When the alarm goes off the notification LED flashes red,and that implies that if the alarm is powered up and working properly then it should show a green LED. The thing is, it doesn't. It's not clear that the alarm is on and working, which can be concerning.Apart from that, it's a good device with comprehensive instructions, and easy to set up. Nice.

A simple battery powered carbon monoxide detector. It comes with batteries supplied (Duracell) so pop those in and it is ready to go. I used the test button to check that the alarm bell was working and it was. The unit can be free standing or wall mounted - a couple of screws and rawl plugs are supplied.A key point about positioning (as explained to me by my very helpful chimney sweep) is that you need the detector above head height. This is because carbon monoxide is lighter than air. So if you were unfortunate enough to have a build up it will fill the room from the top downwards. So if you have it above head height you would get a detection warning before the gas reached you.I have no wayof testing the monitor’s capability to detect carbon monoxide - but I feel safer having it in the room.

I was a little confused with the product picture which shows a "First Alert" one.Anyway, if you visit their website it has links to "BRK" so I guess the company and products have features in common. The manual with the product also uses the "First Alert" name. This one is powered by 2 x AA's (Duracell provided) as is wall mounting hardware. The instructions in English seem okay and it has a single button operation and two colour LED. Green flash every so often all is okay and red for alert along with an evil noise.I myself like to have more than one detector in a room with a possible source of Carbon Monoxide for extra safety should one of them not actually work. Also of course branded ones andreplace at the interval stated by the manufacturers.

The BRK CO4000EN Carbon Monoxide Detector comes with two AA batteries in the box so can be installed and up and running in no time.It has wall mounting holes on the back and these are standard, so if replacing another unit it should fit straight away. You can, of course, have this free-standing as well. The instructions were helpful in determining the best place for the unit as well as general operation and best practice. The detector is simple and straightfoward to use, although I can't obviously test whether it works when Carbon Monoxide is detected, the test alarm worked fine and is certainly loud enough to wake our whole house up! Batteries need to ideally be replaced every year. For a simple detector that seems to work well, this is perfect.

You get a decent set of instructions with this (detailed info about where to place it) plus 2 AA batteries (Duracell rather than cheap rubbish ones, but they are marked OEM which probably means they don't have a great deal of charge) wall mounting screws (you can lift the alarm off the screws when you need to replace batteries). The front cover which you need to open to insert batteries is a bit clunky and potentially fragile but OK. There's a simple button to press to test the alarm and to stop the alarm if it sounds, and that's basically all there is to it. I could hardly verify that this actually works but let's hope it never gets put to the test with a real carbon monoxide build-up.

I had to have a few goes at installing the batteries on this. There is a sort of "prong" which has to be in teh right place to let the battery compartment close properly; no idea why its designed like this but mine was very slightly deformed so not easy to close at first. I got it shut though with the included batteries in place, and tested witht eh button. There is a useful SILENCE feature so that you can temporarily silence the alarm but without removeing the battery and incapacitating it. I am happy to install this alarm in my guest room next to the boiler cupboard, but would have appreciated the choice of a stand in addition to holes to screw it to the wall.

The 'BRK CO4000EN Carbon Monoxide Detector, AA Battery Powered, Compact Design, White' is a carbon monoxide detector which can be either wall mounted or free-standing (CO detectors must not be placed on ceilings or up high). It is powered by easily-replaceable AA batteries, which I like, and also has a silence button, which is useful for false alarms. While I was surprised to see that this product is actually more expensive than the FireAngel ones which also function as room thermometers, nonetheless this is a useful safety device and well worth the investment.

I’ve now got four of these in my bungalow! They are small and discrete and save lives so why not.You simply pop in the batteries, position them as suggested, (basically near fuel burning sources such as boilers, gas heaters, open fires and wood burners. You won’t know you’re at risk if carbon monoxide is escaping into your home, that’s why it’s called the silent killer.Buy this and, hopefully, the only time you will hear it is when you are testing it each month. It warns you when the battery is running low so you won’t accidentally run out of power.

Our home and two rented properties I own have gas fired boilers so Carbon Monoxide Detectors are a must. This detector from BRK comes in a neat little box with two AA batteries included, the batteries are easy to install behind a flap on the front, this makes replacing batteries easier. Battery life is quoted at around 5 years and they is flashing green light to let you know the detector is active. Also provided are plugs and screws for wall mounting. The alarm test is plenty loud enough, just hope it will never be needed.

Bought to replace the exact same model so it would fit the existing wall screws - and it does. (The previous one beeped to tell it was at the end of its lifetime, which had been 2 years longer than the expected 7 years.) The enclosed manual/leaflet contained instructions in various languages. Getting the batteries in, testing the detector and putting it up on the wall on the existing wall fitting was easy... I hope I never have to learn if it works in case of an actual carbon monoxide leak.

This unit is easy to set up, just insert the batteries (included), and test. The unit is reasonably compact, neat, and unobtrusive. You can fix it to the wall using the supplied screws. There is a comprehensive instruction booklet in English (proper English, not auto translated) and also German. The alarm has a useful silence button, so if it is triggered you can silence the alarm while you deal with the issue.I’m going to assume this works effectively, and hope I never need to find out!
