This Carbon Monoxide Detector is extremely simple to use. And best of all, it uses battery power, so there is no need for it to be sited closed to a socket or attached to the wall (although wall plugs, screws and guidance are provided should you wish to do so). When I moved house just over 8 years ago, I brought a CO detector with me to reinstall. It had to be fixed to a wall, a specific height above a socket (so that it could be plugged in). I do not enjoy drilling holes in the wall at the best of times and, when you add in the mysteries of exactly where the wiring to the socket might be in the wall, even with the use of a wire detector, it was one of those jobs I never got around to doing.Hence the wish to get a detector that did not need mains power. The unit is supplied with three AA batteries and these are simply fitted inside the unit; there is a red coloured strip in each of the battery compartments that needs to be pressed down as each battery is inserted (a safety measure to ensure you do not forget to insert the batteries). The unit lets out a fairly quiet `peep' as the last battery connection is made then, after a short time, the digital display shows you the level of CO in the vicinity (a reassuring `0' in our case). A periodic flash of a green light confirms the unit is powered and operating then you just need to place it somewhere to monitor CO levels (one unit per floor is recommended) - and lots of guidance is provided in the leaflet.Weekly testing is recommended, which involves pressing the test/reset button (be prepared for a loud beeping noise for several seconds) after which the unit resets itself.Maintenance is a monthly dust with a vacuum cleaner and an annual battery change. The whole unit has to be changed after 7 years - it will apparently sound an audible alarm every 30 seconds at this point and will no longer monitor CO levels; my units have a helpful sticker to indicate the unit needs to be replaced by May 2018 so I can ensure I get replacements in good time.I chose this particular unit as it did not require mains wiring and it had a digital display. The ease of set up, with no drilling required, means that the units are already both installed in my home and monitoring CO levels (no 8+ year wait for these), each installation only taking the time needed to insert three batteries in a compartment. The digital display ensures that I can check levels easily and with just a glance as I walk by. I am sure that I am not alone in never getting around to installing a CO monitor - this one is so easy that safety is only a momentary installation away, with no more excuses needed.

My boiler is getting quite old now, thirteen years to be exact. Whilst it still works just fine I had read some horror stories of people who nearly killed themselves due to carbon monoxide poisoning. I started to convince myself that I was having similar symptomes, feeling tired, dizzy, just out of sorts etc. I decided £20 was a small price to pay for the peace of mind of knowing that there wasn't any leak of CO2 from the boiler. The unit seemed well made and was easy to understand and setup. It is well thought out and gives a no nonsense display of any dangerous levels of gas. I haven't bothered to put it on a wall, its just sits on my desk in my workroom where I spend most of my time.It would also be easily heard in the bedroom if there was a problem at night. By pressing a button you can also see the highest reading over an extended period of time. Fortunately, it is always a very reassuring 0.It is hard to see how this little unit could be improved, it does just what it says on the can. So I give it a deserved 5 stars and thoroughly reccomend it.Incidently, having reassured myself that I am not being gassed to death, I now feel much better. It was probably just autosuggestion from reading the truly horrific experiences of a whole family who were unwittingly being gassed. Despite having their boiler checked and regularly serviced, none of the engineers ever spotted the problem. Their GP also never suspected the cause of the familie's symptoms. It took years to discover the cause of their illness. If only they had had one of these detectors. The moral is, don't just rely on having your boiler serviced regularly, get yourself a second line of defense, buy a CO2 detector. By the way, a smoke detector is NOT a CO2 detector, they are completely different.

These are an invaluable piece of kit that provides a level of detection from carbon monoxide. In the past I have viewed these products but like many others, I have found the price prohibitive. So it was good to see at long last that a safety item such as this, has arrived at what I think is a reasonable price. So what is it like? The alarm is slightly larger than some of the older wall mounted central heating controls. It has a digital display that advises you of any amount of C M that comes into contact with the alarm; therefore I would read this as a possible early warning system that tells you something may not be right in the house, but, I could be wrong. It is portable and can be moved around the house and one of the adverts I have seen, says it can be taken on holiday. The downside; the instructions I found are not the easiest I have read and at I times I found them in my opinion to be a mixture of providing basic safety information with technical information that I didn't have a clue about. Therefore, if you do not understand the instructions for where to place these items, then do what I did, get someone qualified who does, you may also find that you may well need more than one alarm. Also, Kidde claims that these alarms will only last 7 years, they do have an `end of life' warning system and you will have to replace them before that time, but, for 4.3 pence per week what do you expect. The bottom line is this; there really isn't an excuse not to have these detectors in your house, the choice is yours.

We've recently moved into a new house which has a wood burner and a boiler of 1980's vintage . Although the boiler has been thoroughly checked and has been found to be working perfectly, there is a bit of me that is worried that things could go wrong so for the first time I have bought a CO monitor/alarm. Similarly I have read stories of leaking flues on wood burners causing deaths. The previous owners of the house had left a CO alarm behind but it bore a date in 2006 as its expiry date. This unit is simple to install & operate, and is neat & unobtrusive. I like the ability to check background CO levels. I did this religiously at first but do so less frequently now that I am more confident that we aren't being gassed. The alarm is extremely loud when tested so if the worst happens we should be alerted in time. Apparently the unit will give a warning when it gets to the end of its life after seven years so we won't make the same mistake as our predecessors. We haven't had any false alarms - the instructions contain information about where to site the alarm and, just as importantly, where not to site it. We have installed one unit in the hall between the boiler room and the room with the wood burner, and another on the landing. The one in the hall is close enough to the sources of potential CO poisoning to provide reassurance but not so close that the alarm goes off all the time.

I installed the unit a couple of weeks ago, so far no false alarms. It is easy to fit it hooks onto two screws and looks smart and not intrusive.Set up was straight forward, I tested the alarm which is quite loud.A little green light flashes every 30 seconds to let you know it is operating. The LED display gives a reading of zero when operating, and gives another reading when the alarm goes off.Reading will have to be checked against the table in the instructions, of cause after everyone has vacated the premises and doors and windows opened.A printed label telling you what to do if the alarm activates can be placed by unit.Carbon monoxide is a silent killer,I really should have fitted one ages ago.We sleep easier now we have one installed. One other thing because it is battery operated it is also portable so you can take it withyou if you use a caravan or self catering cottages etc.Hope this review helps.UPDATE. 10/07/12Have recently change the batteries, mainly for peace of mind even though the batteries still check out OK with tester. So they have lasted for nearly 20 months, with regular tests.I have had no false alarms. Some time ago I was concern that when I test the unit, how do I know that it works. Pressing the test button tells you the unit works electrically, but does not test the unit for Carbon Monoxide. So after checking around came across DETECTAGAS

The unit I ordered arrived quite quickly in December thanks to Amazon. The instructions are very thorough, but need reading and re-reading a few times to fully appreciate set up, installation and monitoring day by day and sensible advice as to what to do if there are high levels of carbon monoxide Keep the instructions safely. The Carbon monoxide alarm has a life of seven years before replacement is needed. I chose this more expensive model, the Kidde 900-0230 battery alarm, for its digital display screen, with push backlight, its self test facility and its two, led units, the flashing green led about every 30 seconds reassures all is well. The red one only flashes if carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level. It is housed in an off white plastic casing and contains a loud alarm siren if dangerous levels arise. Once the battery is inserted and the instructions followed its quite straightforward and is operational in a few minutes. The unit was easy to fit on a convenient wall at head height, but could be lifted off and used in portable mode around the house if required. Battery nearing its end of life is indicated by the unit.I am pleased with this alarm and would by another Kidde replacement in due course.

So far so good. The unit is operating and the alarm sounds very loudly. I hope I never have to use it, but it's there if the need arises.PROS:1. There is a small display which shows how much carbon monoxide can be detected wherever the unit is placed. Mine reads '0' and this is very reassuring to see.2. A large test button allows you to check that the unit operates a should. It emits a series of loud beeps, so even if you were asleep at the time, this unit would almost certainly wake you up.3. Clear instructions. The instructions were very easy to follow. There are a few places where this unit should not be placed, and so having this explained clearly is very important.4. Batteries included. The unit came with quality batteries (Duracell) which is nice. Often alarms come with an obscure brand of battery, but these are good quality.5. The unit is wall mountable. It even comes with plugs and screws.CONS:I can't fault this alarm at all. I trust that it works well, and offers me peace of mind.Overall, I would recommend this alarm to anyone who doesn't have one. carbon monoxide can be a killer, and for the price of a takeaway meal, you should protect yourself and your family.

Easy to set up, can wall mount or just leave on flat surface. I put it on a table in living room where there is a fireplace (with a fire lit most of the time). Seemed OK, registering zero CO (as had my previous mains CO alarm for seven years) then it did alarm after about 12 hours, indicating off the scale CO level! Can't easily switch alarm off, so took it out of the room and put it in a drawer to dampen noise. It went silent after 5 mins or so, indicating zero CO, and I took it back in the living room, where it continued to register zero. Since then (for nearly 4 weeks) it has registered zero. Maybe I had it a little close to the fireplace initially (about 2 metres away (nearer then recommended)- now it's about 3 metres away), but after thinking I would be plagued by false alarms it seems to have settled down. So, apart from the initial (false?) alarm, it seems OK. It's handy that it can be moved around (eg can take it on holiday). Digital readout is useful, as can recall past high reading (so can see if CO level has risen when out/overnight/been away etc). Alarm is loud, similar to old mains alarm. Don't know yet about battery life, though.

Bought this after all the recent incidents in the news. Arrived very quickly and was very pleased with the quality. Two problems though. In the description (On the Kidde website and in the instructions) its states that this model has a back light for the display. When I phoned the Kidde helpline I was told this is an error and there is no backlight, not a problem as the display very easy to read. The main problem I had was that I was getting a reading just below the amount that would trigger the alarm. I though I must have a problem with CO somewhere in the house so I zeroed the alarm and tried it in other locations, even outside, still getting a high reading. When I phoned the helpline I was told that this was another error in the instructions. The instruction for zeroing the alarm is to hold down the the 'Peak Level' and 'Reset' buttons together but in fact it only works if you hold down the 'Peak Level' button first and then the 'Reset' button.Did that and now all is well and getting a zero reading.Apart from the hitches with the instruction I am really pleased with the alarm and again great Amazon value.

I consider that a carbon monoxide detector is more important than a smoke detector. Smoke gives you some warning and you can sense it. Carbon Monoxide is odourless and gives no warning - it can just kill you, or your kids. It leaves little trace. After a friend of ours lost their son - he was sleeping in a bedroom above the room in which a defective gas boiler was installed and they found him dead in his bed one morning - I have always had a carbon monoxide detector sitting adjacent to our gas boiler, with another in the lounge alongside our wood burner. We have already had one positive alert from the unit by the boiler - an invisible and undetected flue leak which led to total replacement of the boiler itself - that single incident justified the cost of the detector. Our children have moved out now and I have given each a detector for peace of mind.Do bear in mind that the detector element only lasts for around 10 years or less and then the detector will need replacement. And that you should test it every few weeks. Same goes for the smoke detectors that you still really do need to have around.

This is a well made alarm with a comprehensive instruction/installation guide, it is a refreshing change to have instructions that were originally written in English rather than the usual badly translated version. Also included are two sticky labels showing what to do if the alarm sounds including the latest emergency contact numbers. The unit is guaranteed for 7 years which is also the life of the unit, after 7 years from initial power up it displays "End" on the led panel and it needs replacing. It can be wall mounted (screws not supplied, actually they usually are and are stored in the battery compartment but mine were missing) or free standing. It is recommended that batteries are changed every year (3 AA batteries needed)however it also displays "Lb" if the battery is low.On test the alarm was loud it claims +85dB and I have no reason to disbelieve this. This unit has an advantage over the ones that just sound an alarm in that it will show peak readings which is useful if there is a slow build up of gas (Carbon Monoxide (CO) only detectable) below the level that will trigger an alarm.

I orignally wanted to buy the lower spec model but as my original unit died quickly the delivery lead time from Amazon was 3 weeks so I I opted for this higher spec model. It is easy to set up but be careful when you test the alarm as it is rather loud (as you would hope it would be).The read out display is an added detail which gives additional piece of mind so long as it stays at zero.If the alarm does go off then the reading on the display will change giving you an indication of the severity of the leak in a numeric form. You would have to read the instruction booklet to understand in detail what each value means. The visual display along with a small beep will also tell you when the batteriesare low and also when the unit needs replacing. The visual display also has a backlight but I am sure if the alarm goes off you would not bother to use this.Just one small note. The unit does not come with a seperate bracket as the lesser spec unit but has a built in bracket on the back of the unit. Fixings are supplied along with batteries. So far the unit remains silent!

A few years ago, after a friend of ours nearly died because his flue became dislodged and the chimney was feeding CO into the room, we got a CO detector as well as smoke alarms. When our CO detector packed up, we bought this one as a replacement. The previous one had gone off one night for no apparent reason - we thought we had a leak so we opened windows and sat in the freezing cold for 2 hours until the gas guys came - and then they said there was no evidence of there ever having been a leak - it was the detector that was faulty. Therefore, we like this one because it actually will tell you how many parts per million of CO it measures and so you can see if there has actually been a leak or not.It has a nice digital display and screws for wall mounting. The only thing I didn't like was that it has a built-in mortality - so it will expire and not work any more in 6 years - but the date of manufacture was almost a year ago so I'll only get 5 years and not six, hence why I didn't give it 5 stars. But otherwise I'd recommend it.

I didn't feel I could give an alarm 5 stars simply because it's an alarm. No other reason. So, what does it do? Well, if you press the 'test' button it makes a hell of a noise. Apart from that it just sits there and a green light flashes every now and again. Ours has '0' in the LCD window, which I believe is a good thing. It looks good and feels weighty and robust. It's a neat, small unit. However I don't believe that any of these have any bearing on it's functionality. I hope I never hear it when I shouldn't, in which case it's done it's job. Or rather, it hasn't. If you see what I mean. However, if at some time in the future it saves my life I will consider it an absolute bargain.I have smoke alarms too, which do a similar thing, but they're different. So you need both.Buy them. They could save your life and the lives of those closest to you, saving your family the hell that follows needless tragedy.

Since purchasing the Kidde 900-0230 Carbon Monoxide Alarm from Amazon UK,and at a very reasonable price. Both my wife and I feel a lot more safer, especially at night when asleep. The dangers of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning are all too real, in these days ofGas fired Heating and such. In winter, these appliances are used almost 24 hours a dayand so the risk is increased many fold. It is essential that your heating appliance be serviced regularly, and so almost eliminate danger, but nevertheless, having the Alarm is another Insurance against dangerous fumesputting your health/life at risk. The Alarm is very loud, and will surey awaken you from even the deepest sleep, and thus ensuring that your sleep is not going to be a permanent one.A very good purchase, and we are more than pleased with the device.
