I bought this to replace an expired unit the Ei141 which is an Ionisation Smoke Alarm I decided an optical alarm was better for the downstairs hallway this shares the same "one sound all sound" feature the other models have. All these alarms are interchangeable with the "easy fit base". The stock was recent just over 10 years on the expiry date.Included in the pack are:The alarm this is covered with a blue "dust cover"A Duracell 9 volt battery is pre-fitted2 plasterboard plugs, and 2 screws are suppliedInstructionsIf you are replacing an older unit you can simply swap out the main unit leaving the base in place. I kept the base as a spare just in case it is needed later on.Instructions are comprehensive and give detailed information on fitting, location for alarms and the detection quality for various types of "fire response" Clear and simple diagrams are shown, wiring is straight forward into the base unit a few notes though a min of 30 cm between the alarm and any obstructions this includes walls or handling lights. For landlords and multi storey buildings clear schematics show a recommended alarm layout indicating the positions, type of alarms and areas where alarms should not be fitted.Optical alarms are more sensitive to "slower smouldering fires" and less prone to false alarms from the kitchen area (grill and toaster would set off the Ionisation alarm often) this is better, though a little less sensitive to rapid flame fires the other variety is a bit better here both types provide good protection though the manual shows you the recommended areas and suggested alarm types quite clearly I have both types fitted (Ion one upstairs) there is also a "heat alarm" which you can fit in kitchen areas from the same maker. This alarm will trigger another fitted alarm by the same maker this is a great feature as multiple alarms will sound wherever you are it will be heard. A green light comes on when powered up, a red LED flashes briefly to let you know it's working fine, if the battery is low you get a single "short" beep telling you it's time to replace it, based on the older model I had you should get about 5 years out of one.Any downsides? Not many the "easy fit" could perhaps be a bit smoother I would advise a larger flat head screwdriver push this in and push it down slightly to help remove the alarm it works but it can take a bit of "jiggling about". Plastics are acceptable they could be a little more robust but they are up to the job. If you are doing any building work or creating lots of dust I would advise removing the alarm to prevent particles contaminating the sensor, once in a while give it a blast with a blower brush to remove accumulated dust. The 9 volt battery is capable of powering the alarm for up to 2 years without mains, it's really there as a back up if the power goes off you are still protected. In the instructions it is clearly stated to use only Duracell batteries rechargeable ones are not really suitable they won't hold the charge long enough so don't skimp here.A good alarm, not perfect but it's detection rate can't be faulted and the manufacturer has put some effort into ensuring the user knows exactly how to position the alarm and the advantages of specific types of alarms. Bought 3 of these too replace end of life ones the builders originally put. As per usual the bases of the old alarms are not compatible with these ones, so they all had to come out and be replaced. This is not for the faint hearted - if you are not sure about electrical work, pay someoen else to do it - simple. First and foremeost though ALL mains powered alarms should by law have their own isolator in the electric distribution box - MAKE SURE THAT IT IS OFF, I cannot streaa that enough. It is a simple, but very much a lethal mistake, and again if you are unsure get an electrician in. The bases come with the appropriate fittings - screws and rawplugs, so a bit of drilling is required to put the rawplugs into the ceilings.Again make sure there is no electrical wiring or pipework nearby to ensure you dont put a drill through them.Once I had all the bases fitted and wired in, it was a matter of fitting the alarms. Simple job, the 9v battery is already fitted (good solid brand, should easily last the year). All the units came with a dust cover, so remove that, then fit the unit by sliding it in to the base till it clicks. If you need to remove it from the base, there is a slot for a thin device (screwdriver) that you slide in carefully and push down to release and the unit slides off.Overall, for me a straight forward job as the wiring was already there with very little adjustment required. I chose optical over heat detectors or ionisation as it suited my household better. I chose these alarms over others as they are recommended by the Fire Brigade and if you need to change to a different type of alarm, the base for this make are universal. On the fitting side, remember to read the instructions and isolate the mains electricitybefore doing anything.

We moved into our new house (first occupiers) five years ago. Two interlinked AICO EI146 Optical Smoke Detectors were already fitted. Had to replace batteries up and downstairs since. As expected, both times the battery alarms sounded at 3am. (grrrrr)This time replacing the battery made no difference. Alarm continued going CHIRP! all night. Tried cleaning the detector with vacuum cleaner as instructed. No improvement.Bought this one just for the detector part. Direct plug in replacement. Instant cure. Time will tell how long this one will last.

Like for like replacement for a wired smoke alarm system (also Aico). I could have just popped the unit off the base (fitting plate), and slot the new unit on, but the original plastic had discoloured slightly.Very easy to replace the fitting plate, and all in all my 2 new units were fitted in around 15 minutes, tested and working perfectly. These optical units are a slight upgrade from the original units, but perfect for hallway and landing locations and will prevent the rare false alarms we occasionally had from an overtoasted item!

We bought this detector to replace an Ionisation type in our holiday let. The issue with the previous type was that it was located close to the kitchenette and it would go off whenever anyone tried to have a piece of toast. I went for this detector as a replacement because it also uses the "Easi-Fit" system and so it was a very simple job to install - unplug the old one and plug this one in instead - 2 minute job. Happy days. Oh yes, and the good news it that so far, it seems to be toast proof!

Hard to review a smoke alarm until you actually have the misfortune to need it - but this was easily fitted and makes one hell of a racket when toast gets burnt. I guess that is what you want really. Bought this brand as an electrician friend of mine said these were the only ones he would fit - cheaper models he didn't rate - especially with someones life. For some reason, I tend to take his advice as an expert even though he seems to electrocute himself on a weekly basis.

Going by other reviews decided to pay a bit more and get this model. It looks so cool. The old one put in by the house builder in the hall is very ugly, looks cheap and dirty cream colour, and its only 6 years old. So decided to upgrade the hall sensor to smarted up my hallway. This is just the job, just swapped out the 3 wires (ones interconnect).Money well spent. Not very well packed though, just its box in a bag, needed bubble wrap.

These units are made to be replaced every 10 years or so and date stamped when manufactured. You can find the date on the outer edge of the unit. The version I received has an expiry date of 2028 (8 Years from purchase) so was made 2 years ago.I'm sure it'll easily last 10 years but it's still something to watch out for as some sellers will offload older units in the same way supermarkets put the oldest products to the front.

Have 3 of these in my house, installed when the house was built in 2011. One developed a fault and kept going off, As the three are linked via the mains when one goes off they all go off. Bought this to replace the faulty one. As it was exactly the same make and model I was able to leave the original base plate fitted to the ceiling and just replace the detector. Simple swap over, completed in a few minutes.

I bought this one to replace the one which was put in by the builders 10 years ago. I will admit I was dubious about being able to fit it myself but the good news was that I could. This one slid straight onto the old plate and worked meaning that I didn't need an electrician to fit it. The last one lasted 10 years so hopefully this one does as well. Well worth the extra money.

I had exactly the same brand installed from the last 4 years and made the mistake of not regularly vacuuming them out to remove dust etc., so we started getting false alarms that retrospective vacuuming would not fix. It was great getting exactly the same make as all I had to do was snap two new heads onto the existing bases of our paired alarms. Job done!

The electrician said it was the only one he would install due to its great recommendations. Expensive but has a very important job to do! Easy to install he said and looks good. Lights a little (very low level) on the landing when detects motion, which helps in the night find your way. Good guarantee with it too.

bought this as a replacement for a 9 year old same product from Aico, although the old one is still in working order its near the end of the 10 year lifespan recommendation, if this ones lasts and works as well as my previous one at this price i will be more than happy.

Needed to buy two replacements for a pair of EI141's installed almost ten years ago. Was getting lots of false alarms due to the proximity of one to the kitchen so replaced with this model instead. Drop in replacement and false alarms gone!

These seem quite good quality, but I only bought it to replace the same unit which had gone faulty, and it is easy to just slide in to the installed base. However the one that was faulty was well within the date of replacement.
