This plane is well made but I would not recommend it for beginners who don't know how to sharpen and adjust a plane. It is made of very good materials and mine came with a properly flat polished, smooth and level base and a reasonable setup out of the box. It also comes with a spare iron (the blade of this type of plane is known as an iron). The handles are wood, the brass adjustment knobs and screws are very solid and it feels like a first-class piece of equipment. In spite of the above there was some work to do before I could use this item. On the box it says "Fully adjustable high-carbon steel iron correctly hardened, tempered and ground". Nice if it were true, but the last part isn't for sure. The iron fitted needs careful work before use to put a proper edge on it and so does the spare. This isn't a problem for me but for many people who want something they can use immediately the result would be disappointment. Sharpening the iron isn't hard once you've done it a few times but some people find it hard to learn. YouTube might be your friend, take a look at a few tutorials on there before you decide if this is for you. If you have much doubt about your ability to do the sharpening, spend more money on a plane that has its iron already sharp.Because I have the stones and the oil and I know how to create an edge this is a real bargain for me, as a plane of this quality would cost quite a bit more if all that was already done. Just be aware that you're saving money but buying half an hour's work if you know what you're doing. If you haven't done the grinding before though, it may take you a couple of hours of study and work to get this plane ready for use.

This is not a Lie Nielsen, or even a Stanley plane, but when you consider the price of this plane I think you get a lot for your money. That said don't expect to get a plane that is ready to go straight out of the box. The sole on mine was actually reasonably flat from the factory and required very little work. The frog, and the seating of the frog, required a fair bit of cleaning up and smoothing down to get a good even contact, but you might very well have to do that on a Stanley plane too.The biggest job was to sharpen then extra plane iron that comes with this plane (the one that was already fitted had a good 25 degree bevel and only needed the final honing/30 degree secondary bevel).I've attached pictures taken of the extra plane iron straight out of the bag it came in, and it obviously required a fair bit of grinding to reach a workable bevel. It took me about an hour to get the plane up and running (not including the spare iron), and I must say that with a sharp iron and the adjustments set right, you get some fairly good results with this plane, and certainly a lot better than I had expected. The adjustments seem to work well but I have not yet used the plane enough to say how long it will maintain the adjustments. The UP/DOWN adjustment of the iron has a lot of slack on the adjustment wheel, which can be annoying if you have to adjust the depth very often. All in all I believe that this plane is good value for the money - finished a lot better than other brands in the price range - and I can recommend this product for home/DIY use.

Hand planes. There's almost as much bollocks talked about them as wine it seems. Seemingly sensible people hyperventilate when a hand plane isn't true to levels only seen on large scale astrophysics mirrors. Bonkers. And for anyone who thinks I'm being disingenuous go to the Englishwoodworker site - an artisan who makes wonderful furniture and used to make very high end workbenches for his take on hand planes.Anyway. out of the box this will get a decent shaving on pine. It is of course styled the same as the old Bailey design and which has not been bettered - and I include the newer super heavyweight Lie-Nielsons etc in this.I have one and I never use it because frankly it's too heavy and the A2 plane iron is a pain in the butt to sharpen.I have therefore a bunch of old Stanley planes set differently with irons of varying degrees of curve on them. This one I bought for my son as he is now in his own gaff and is now discovering the realities of fixing up an old house with the woodwork to go with it.Anyway, out of the box this works. But naturally you will want to do something with the blade to make it work better and I put a slight curve on it and hone the edge down to 8000 grit on a waterstone. It works just as well as any other plane. It's light enough in hand to be easy to use. Quality is decent enough. Not going to set the world alight but with a bit of polishing on the sole and honing the blade its perfectly good enough for just about everything.Best of all its cheap so you can buy more than one and set them up differently.

I am not sure what sheerness and thickness as above mean in the context of this hand plane. I wanted a plane to replace the one I have and having looked at the reviews of planes on Amazon I realised I was more of a novice than I already thought. After looking at the various reviews I decided on the Draper expert and it arrived quickly and well packaged. I was in a bit of a hurry with a DIY project so used the plane from the box with minimal adjustment and it worked fine for the piece of wood I wanted to reduce in thickness. I was very happy with the plane after this first use and I got what I wanted done. Now at a more leisured pace I can look again at the video suggested in the reviews and see if further adjustment is needed.Having already got a plane some 60 or so years of age I can see that materials now might not be what they once were but I am happy with this hand plane , it does the job and I think it is reasonable for the price and is a worthwhile purchase. My fears when I placed the order were groundless.

My reason for choosing Draper was simply because they have been in the business of producing quality tools for over 90 years. I was thinking about buying a Record plane, but looking at latest Record products I was not impressed with either the designs or prices. I’m a bit of a purist and the Draper smoothing plane ticked all the boxes for me. The Draper smoothing plane thoroughly deserves a 5 star rating as it is exceptionally well made, comfortable to use, nicely balanced, accurate and easy to adjust and furthermore comes with a spare blade - what more could you wish for!I am not a professional carpenter, but enjoy working with wood and DIY.Experience has taught me that cheapness is not always a wise choice especially if you want to produce a quality finish to a project. In my opinion Draper is a brand that you can certainly rely on for quality and reasonable prices.

Planes vary in price a lot for what is a pretty long-established pattern. The differences come down to the fineness in the machining, the quality of the cutter steel (and to a lesser extent the back iron and other components), and at this price, the Draper can't be offering much. And yet. Setup is fine, the sole is smooth, the blade holds its' edge pretty well, and I think it holds its own with one costing twice as much. I've only used it for a week or so, so if the frog and cap start working loose I'll come back and eat my words, but I have to say I'm pleasantly suprised. The negatives I would note are the knob and handle feel a little meagre by comparison to a Stanley, and the lever cap uses a figure 8 rather than the more secure kidney shape to enclose the lever cap screw.

At first glance, a replica of a Stanley/Record No 4. Nicely made and finished, but not as efficient as the original makes. It tends to rattle a lot when in use, the blades seem too soft a steel as they sharpened within seconds, and the settings of iron and cap have to be spot on the have the blade projecting. Probably worth the money for doing odd jobs, or where the plane iron may get damaged, but not a serious contender for quality. The spare blade is useful since the steel is softer and a sharp spare saves the task of honing, as the first will blunt quickly.

A quality plane that is comfortable to use and produces nice, fine shavings after the usual sharpening. Mine had a slight ledge on the chip breaker where it meets the plane iron. This needed exact flattening to remove the ledge and ensure the chip breaker smoothly meets the iron - a matter of 10 minutes on the diamond stone that made a huge difference to the plane. All adjustments work well. The handles are made from nice hardwood and feel good in the hand. I cannot fault this plane and it is excellent value for money.

Lovely looking plane. Quite heavy which is good for the job, but weighty for the toolbag.Only time will tell on build quality. This is a 'Draper Expert' plane, which it doesn't say in the description. It took a bit of effort for a novice to set it up but with perseverance, you'll work it out. Couldn't find much on youtube. The brass screw on the top was properly tight and took a lot of force to unscrew but I got there eventually. The blade was reasonably sharp and took off some shavings after I set it up.

I purchased this smoothing plane due to the price of the item at the time. It was only needed to plane a couple of door bottoms off so I didn't want to spend a lot as it was going to sit in the shed for however long. This has decent build quality and quite heavy which gave me some assurance. It was a little tricky to set it level but did the job brilliantly. As I expected, it is now sat in the shed until the next use.Prompt delivery and well packaged, I couldn't have expected anymore.

Arrived in a plastic moulded cover which would give it no protection if dropped. A box would be better. Bkade was a good thickness and didint need alot of honing. The frog needed a bit of work but again this didnt take long ... aprox 1.5 hours work and its now giving me waffer thin ribbons leaving projects needing little to no sanding. Handle is plastic which i plan to replace with a wooden one .... wood just gives more feel and feedback ....like a leather steering wheel in a car

Have been using this for a few weeks and it seems a great plane for the price. The base is perfectly true, the irons (it comes with a spare) hold a good edge, and it is easy to adjust the iron.Needed a little work out of the box to get it as I like it - the handle was a little rough, there were some sharp corners to the base, and the irons were blunt straight out of the box, but for the price I expected that and after a little attention the plane works great.

You have experience with planes or have watched the youtube tutorials and have a honing guide and stone. This will not perform at all out of the box. It need to be completely dismantled, blade sharpened and the shaving deflector reground. Then reassembled correctly particularly the blade carrier. I would guess it took me 45 minutes. That done it is a great plane and I have owned many Stanley's and Records. In fact it really is excellent for the price.

Bought this plane to work on a boat, I've never really used a plane before so i'm not an expert, but im pretty sure the blade is meant to be straight.Other than that it worked fine once you figure out how to use it, got through a good chunk of pine quickly with reasonable force.Good for if you are in a pinch and need to get rid of wood, probably not the best for fine crafts, but i suppose the price reflects that.

Nice tool with good wooden handles that feel nicer than the expensive Stanley planes plastic ones. Its cheap because they obviously haven't spent any money putting an edge on the blades. If you're good at sharpening and setting up planes then this is fine, otherwise go for a more expensive model.I personally think it's great value for money when compared to others at twice the price.
