I am that guy who thought he’d buy cheaper tools as there won't be that much difference, they all look alike. This is my fifth spokeshave, which compared to many isn’t a lot, and my experience is limited. Because of that lack of experience I’ve always bought cheaper than Stanley thinking there isn’t much difference. My first was almost a direct copy of the flat spokeshave I'm now reviewing, which I like but it is tiny and difficult to adjust precisely. I have three from a fairly well know company for making useable cheap tools. Again I liked them but the blade needed stropping frequently or you’d have to do a full sharpen, though even a strop can take five to ten minutes depending how temperamental the spokeshave was going to be getting it re-setup.But if these tools are 'OK' is it worth spending another eight quid on a Stanley? The answer is a most definite yes! To begin with it only took me about five minutes to 'flatten' the sole and another five get the blade ready for use. It’s very easy to adjust and the mechanism works exactly as you’d expect. The blade remains sharp and I used it all morning on Sapele which is a relatively hard wood. Even though the copies try to make the shape tool they just don’t feel as comfortable or for want of a better word as intuitive as the Stanley. Somehow its balance feels better to me and I was taken totally by surprise by how different it feels. If like me you’re a newbie and inexperience with how a spokeshave should feel in your hand I strongly suggest the Stanley, you won't regret it.

When I started using this tool I noticed that it was not working very well and I was not sure why, the reason was incorrect blade installation by manufacturer (blade was flipped upside down), also blade edge was rough and was requiring flattening and sharpening by using various coarse and fine bench whetstones, it took me 1 or 2 hours to sort this out, because I am not professional woodworker. However once I set the tool properly it works good but it takes only very small shavings, similar to sawdust, because if blade protrude too much it bites into the wood leaving deep scratches. I found out that can blade become dull very quickly after good sharpening. Also cast iron sole was not flat and I had to flatten it.

If you try to put it to work straight out of the box, it won't do any good, skipping and tearing all over the surface of the wood. That's mainly happening because nothing here is flat, so it can't be tightened right. About an hour flattening every possible surface with sandpaper and flat files, and suddenly it becomes a viable tool in your arsenal.I can't say if it's the norm or the exception, but in this case the blade bevel was so badly messed up, it took too much work to get it to acceptable levels of straightness. The bevel was ground concave not only along its width, but also along its length (blade sides were longer than the middle), making it impossible to sharpen.

Was somewhat concerned by some of the reviews and the clearly very poor quality castings that had been supplied in past. Purchased direct from Amazon as I figured would be the easiest way to return the spokeshave should I receive similar product. However it has arrived and I am delighted with the quality and ease of use. The casting quality is good, cutting area is flat and no defects - while Stanley is not the Rolls Royce of tools what I have received is as good as if not better that what I have grown to expect from Stanley tools. All in all I am happy with the tool quality and value for money - this tool will certainly fulfill my requirements for year to come.

I do have an old Stanley Spokeshave I purchased in the 1960's but it is the cheaper version without the 2 adjustments to level the blade, so yo have to mess about for 5 minutes to adjust it, and after all these years I am getting fed up of doing that, especially when I am using it a lot.It is a real pleasure to use this new one, so much easier to set up.People say Stanley qulaity isn't as good as it used to be, but that is subjective and I personally would certainly agree with that regarding their planes with their 'plastic' handles, as opposed to wood, but this Spokeshave is fine, I have no complaints about it at all.5 stars from me.

Purchased this tool after using a similar tool at a woodworking course that I attended. Once it arrived I put it straight to work to make some homemade rustic curtain pools from fallen trees. This did the job really nicely. I deduced to purchase this item as it appeared to be a higher quality item than some of the other items available and I wasn't disappointed. The blade is easy to adjust with just your fingers and can be very finely tuned. The curtains poles got a very nice finish and my wife was pleased with the result.

Worked right out of packaging, We bought these for our two girls (5 and 8) so they can make pegs for thier timber framing and wittling projects. These are brilliant, good carbon steel that hones easily solid feel and very precise ajustment screws are easy for little fingers or big ones. Being able to fully retract unlike a small drawknife was the main consideration for a spoke shave for our kids. Our kitchen is graced with hand made red cedar wooden spoons. Cost effective childcare in lock down.

Works well, it’s a good piece of kit for a very good price. It does work well but not right out the box. My ones iron was was a bit chipped and wasn’t very sharp so it needed a good sharpen. The foot/base is good but I did need to lap it flat a bit first. It’s a solid and simple tool though so with a little TLC out the pack it’s a great bargain that will do the job well and last years of use.

This simple tool has completely amazed me and turned my relationship with wood around. There is so much control and feel with the wood that it is a real joy to use. Dead simple to adjust cutting depth. I polished the sole to ensure it's totally flat, sharpened up the blade a little more and it's a formidable ally. I would really recommend one of these to anyone working with wood.

It's my first time using a spokeshave so it's hard to compare it to something. It's a bit fiddly at the begin to adjust it but once you've got it adjusted right it shaves wood very nice. Blade doesn't come sharp but that was kind of expected for the price I paid. It's very rare that tools like this comes shaving sharp from the factory. Well, I'm happy with the purchase,

Solid plane delivered quickly to Canada, but local delivery terrible. That's DHL for you - can't find a house on a street. Try and ask if they can use anyone but DHL. Product was well packaged and taped up/protected. Lighter painter's type tape would have been easier to get off the mouth than the heavier quality tape that was used, but it did protect well. Solid plane.

Overall good and I've gotten lots of use out of it already after a month, substituting for the drawknife, chisel or even plane in finer work, rounding and bevelling.Adjustment screws are rather coarse and must sometimes be turned with pliers, and the tool took a good while to sharpen initially, though it keeps an edge well.

For once a company that has a product that works so has left the design alone. I have problems with my hands and find it difficult to use a plane so took the plunge and finally bought a spokeshave. I had to ease a wooden door and this worked a treat. A lot more versatile than a plane as well.

I was a bit concerned about reviews claiming this was a fake. I’m pretty show it’s real - it just doesn’t come in a box but wrapped in waxed paper. Yes, the blade needs sharpening before you use it, but after a bit a tweaking of the blade depth this worked great.

Really good tool. Nice feel to the handle. Easy to use. Make sure that the blade is set to minimum, so that "paper thin" and you will get a good result. Also remember to shave in the direction of the grain.
