I bought one of these about 5 months ago when I was planning on getting into woodworking.I have been using it now for a bout 2 months, and while it worked OK when I got it first, I've been gradually tweaking, and improving it, filing down bits, flattening the blade, smoothening the sole, and the base, and making sure the blade is sitting flush on it, etc, and it's working great now.I usually buy vintage old tools, instead of new ones, and clean them up, like old planes, etc, but this was my only spokeshave until today, when my vintage Stanley spokeshave arrived. I cleaned it up, smoothened it and sharpened it, etc, expecting it to be better than this cheapo spokeshave, but it's not!I don't know what it is about this Silverline spokeshave, but it just feels more comfortable in the hand. Maybe it's that the metal in the handles are a bit thicker, I don't know, but it just feels better, more solid, and it seems to roll better in your palms and fingers when you guide it around a curve. The Stanley also still has some chetter, even though the blade is flat with the base, so it might work a bit better wghen I tweak it some more, but for now, bizarrely, this cheap one works better!Maybe it's that I'm just more used to using this spokeshave, I don't know, only time will tell, but I think I'd definitely reach for this before the Stanley. I'm sure the parts in this are a bit cheaper than those on the Stanley, and I'm not betting that it will last 100 years, like the Stanley, but if you're willing to put the work into tweaking this yourself, to get it perfect, then it's definitely recommended. If you just want something to use every now and again, and you're not bothered about it working absolutely perfect, then it's also recommended.I'm sure the manufacturing is not as stringent on these cheap spokeshaves, so you might get unlucky and end up with something that's broken, or with dodgy threads or something, but you can always get a refund if that's the case.If you want something that's perfect straight out of the box, then you should probably look at a Veritas or something expensive where somebody spends an hour tuning it up perfectly for you before it leaves the factory, but even then it might be perfect, but it might not be perfect for you.

Unbelievable value for money! I bought one for shaping a cookie tin banjo neck that i had decided to make.I am a seasoned carpenter and although I never use spokeshave (in fact I sold two record ones last year! Doh!) I am very aware of tool quality. The body is sturdy and the sole true. The mouth of the body is finished well (which is not what I expected of such a cheap tool........I expected to have to file bits of casting off). There is a bit of pitting inside the mouth of the casting but not enough to cause the blade to chatter. The capping iron is holding screw is reasonably well made and the blade seems quite hard (not sure what grade steel......it holds an edge well though and is well finished). The only real fault I can see, which does nt effect the working and use of the tool is the brass adjustment ferrules. They look like machined toffee wrappers but they do the job! It works well in use if honed and adjusted correctly.I am sure if you are a cabinet maker or luthier you would want to buy quality ones but if it's for the odd project you can't go wrong. It moved me sufficiently to actually bother to write a review!

Nice! I bought a pair of these bad boys, one straight and one convex. I've never used one before but have a little project on the go that I thought they could help with.Very easy to use, very easy to set up and did exactly what I hoped they would do.When you're paying a fiver for a tool that can cost £100 or more there's really no room to moan. I went for the dirt cheap option because it was my first time and I wasn't totally convinced they wpuld help. I'll use them until they die or until I have enough experience to know that they're not quite up to snuff, in the meantime it's two thumbs up from me. A fabulous starter tool for the inexperienced user.

The spoke shave held its edge for the initial testing and then required further Sharpening/honing yet to be done! The wood to be 'spokeshaven' is a branch of Air Dried Ash.For a beginner it is a good tool and will probably take a while to get used to using it properly. It is a little small for a large handed user Size 11+ hands but in essence it will do the job as long as it keeps its edge for a reasonable time.Thank you. An aged D I Y er

You just can't complain with a value item like this. Provided the lock screws are tightened correctly this works well and does a sound job. Used it for knocking up a set of oars and mast for a boat - far better than using power plane as I had a better feel for what I was taking off. Looking forward to other projects with it.

Silverline makes very good products which after some flattening and sharpening perform like top notch woodworking products. This spoke shave has nice tick blade, so easy to adjust the depth, good solid body and the best thing it the price.

This does the trick but it will not do doors, spend maybe £10 and get a real plane for doing doors, but wood, it does a nice job on posts and things like that, a handy tool for those who work with wood

The Spoke Shave does the same job and is as easy to adjust as one costing Many pounds more. Used as intended I can see this tool lasting many years. I use it for shaping bows (as in archery)

It won't walk on water or feed 5000 with two fish, but by god can it remove some material and make some smooth curves. It needed some sharpening and stropping but for £5 it's pretty great.

This spoke shaver is robust and very easy to ajust and use. It saves a lot of time in shaping wood to required design. This item is was so very reasonably priced that I bought two!

I so want to be able to use this, but I just don't seem to be able to get the hang of it, no matter how many videos I watch to get the technique … still remains on the shelf

The spokeshave was exactly as described, worked perfectly, ànd was a fantastic price compared with others which were two or threetimes the price. Superb value!

Seems good for the money. Easy to adjust and stays as set. Will have to see how it lasts. Finishing of device is a bit rough but as long as it does the job.
