What can one say. Surform has been going for years and while not a precision cabinet making tool, it's very useful for smoothing/planing, much more robust than a plane and no need to set or sharpen blades. The main downside, as it always was, is that shavings tend to clog up inside the body of the tool and are fiddly to remove. The handle design has changed since my original late 1960s version (which has been "borrowed" by someone unknown but then I can't complain as I "borrowed" it off my Dad 40 years ago. In other words they seem to last forever). It now has a sharp edge to the top of the handle moulding and it feels flimsy compared to the old style hence 4 stars.I seem to recall that you could loosen the retaining screw and rotate the handle for use in tight access situations, so that the handle lay along the line of the tool rather than at right angles. Not possible on this version. Such is progress.

Excellent Tools great there still around. As the previous feedback left suggested, I too found my old hand surform in the shed rusty and blunt, but could see it was just what was needed. Feel that some jobs just can't be done with anything else. Say like cleaning up a badly fitting door shut.

Needed to plane down the edge of my garage side door so that it would closewithout jamming. This tool did the job but did not leave a very smooth edge.If you need a perfect surface buy a proper plane. If its a job like mine thenthis tool will do the job.

This product has been hit with economics, and it is a great shame for Stanley tools, would have paid an extra for better quality, not as robust as my old one which I had for many years, don't expect this one to last as long, I will make my own handle

I thought the Surform was dead and gone, and such a relief to find it hasn't. A REALLY useful tool; my previous one lasted 15 years (until someone borrowed it and kept it!) - and it felt like my left hand had been removed. The relief is palpable!

excellent tool i would recommend this for smaller jobs,i have used to trim some doors and it handled very well.I had one of these a few years ago and lent it to somebody and never got it back,so am very happy to have a new one, fast delivery.

I have found this to be a good tool that gets the job done and being a Stanley means you can get a replacement blade when you need one. I have used this tool on plaster as well as wood without problems.

Was sceptical of this after reading some reviews, but it works great! Seems pretty sturdy, made short work of plaining a door. Ideal for a basic DIY person on simple domestic wood projects.

Thanks, its a functional device and the sellers provided it in good time at a fairly reasonable price, perhaps a smidgen on the high side. But i'm not put off I will buy from them again

I have used this plane to do a small door ie to plane this to the right size and have found this plane does the job the only think I do not like is the handel on the plane

16.3.2013

Will do the job but it's nowhere near as sturdy as my original unit. time will tell, however. Always a useful tool to keep in the workshop.

does what it says on the tin help me out when I was fitting carpets took the door down well not too much excellent tool will use it again.

Good quality and works well, not sure how much sanding would be needed after though to smooth an edge as it's quite a coarse grain

Such a simple tool for shaving wood, plastics and composites down to size. This version is excellent quality.
