The 12 year old expression from Caol Ila is a very nicely balanced dram with a good balance between peaty, smokiness and the lighter, sweeter notes that come through. It's not as heavy as some of the Southern Islay big-hitters but sometimes you don't want a full on peaty punch in the mouth and this seems to deliver a nice blend of smokiness without being a proper peat monster like it's fellow Island Sister distilleries. Absolutely nothing against any other Islay malts as I like them all for different reasons, this one is just a bit more approachable for some people's palates.

One of the less well known Islay malts, and not always easy to come by, Caol Ila deserves to be more well known. It has long been amongst my favourites, albeit not quite as high up in my ranking as Ardbeg and Lagavulin. One of the peatier, smokier varieties (though not quite so much as Lagavulin and Laphroaig), it may be a bit too tarry, phenolic and 'medicinal' for many, especially on the aftertaste. If however you are partial to any of the aforementioned varieties, you will likely appreciate this.

This is an excellent whisky - a lighter more refined version fo Caol Ila 12 year old - still very smokey but with none of the rough edges, a lighter peat and a slight honeyed tone. The scent is gentle and sweet and the first taste of of honey, vanilla and a slight salt with the smokey tones edging in as an aftertaste - a dram to savour. Unusually, I added a drop of water - it opens it up wonderfully allowing the space to taste the complexity

Stupid being asked to write a review on a whisky. I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't like it, it's one of my favourites.Who are these idiots giving it 1 star, why buy a bottle when you don't know what it's like and then get all pompous about it, 'got no soul' 'elastoplast' ; oh dear, Muppets. Buy a single in a pub, before buying a whole bottle. All they've done is publicise how stupid they are. No worries - thanks for the laugh.

Beautiful. I've been trying different whiskies and working my way along the malt section of my nearest supermarket. This one has the peaty nature to it that some old whiskey buffs waffle on about but it's very light and adds to the taste. It's 43% which is also a bonus so it's deceptively strong.I'm not an expert but I've found my favourite and this is it.

Very good Whisky, I love my peaty whiskys and thought I'd give this one a go. I usually go for Laphroig, recently ventured to Ardbeg and this is right up there in terms of quality. It's slightly milder than the 2, especially Laphroig but is a lovely smoky peaty Whisky to enjoy in the evenings as a tipple before bed.

That was the first single malt I have tasted and I was overwhelmed by the scent and the taste, so different from all the blended malts I have ever experienced. It was so smoky and peaty, yet mellow and harmonious. I just fell in love with it. Now I have to try some other Islay single malts.

While other Islam whiskys are getting expensive and also going NAS (No Age Statement) or of dubious quality (laphroaig being biggest sinners here) Caol Ila still delivers without dilution - smokey, Peaty, smoke (did I mention the smoke yet?) mellow though and rich. Stunning

This whisky is the best Islay has to offer in many ways, the older you go the better it gets. Well done to Pierrick and the team down at the distillery, because this stuff is just ace. Pound for pound one of the best whisky's out there.

I love single malts and very smokey peaty whiskey. This is by far the best I have ever tasted and even better than the more expensive Mackillops selections that I have had before.I ALWAYS have a bottle of this in the cabinet.

This is one of my favourite whiskies of all time. The richness and smokey flavours are needed during the winter months. I usually don't do this, but if you add a tiny bit of hot water it just adds to the smoothness. Great dram

An excellent Islay blend....A bit milder than the caricature Islays like laphroaig...A nice alternative if you want something less smokey, but still definately Islay. (think of it as between talisker and Lagavullin)

If you are a big fan of your whiskey this is a must have for your collection the flavour tastes great and if you are looking for a very good whiskey then you have come to the right place you would be disappointed.

I'm a newbie to whisky drinking and so far I'm a lover of peated whiskeys. This is as easily as good as a Lagavulin 16 and Ardbeg 10, I'm very pleased, especially as it is nearly half the price of the Lag 16 atm.
