If you're looking to buy an educational gift for your son or daughter this Christmas, ask yourself one question – are they inquisitive about science or nature? – if so, this microscope and experiment kit might be a good choice. Exactly how good a choice may depend on whether they can cope with a not very well written experiment book and take the initiative by picking up a book, laptop or tablet to fill in the blanks. If they can, it's probably the perfect present. The microscope itself is very good quality for what some (because of the packaging) may classify as a toy. You need to have three AA batteries, which power a spot light above where the sample sits, and you are supplied with a disc type battery which powers a light that shines up from underneath the sample. There is a disc wheel between where the sample sits and the light underneath which has coloured filters and different sizes of hole, and these allow you to vary the colour and quality of light that illuminates the sample. There are six possible magnifications, made possible because as well as the three lenses (4x, 10x & 40x) there are two eyepieces (10x & 25x). Of these, five worked fine, but we had trouble seeing anything when combining the 40x lens with the 25x eyepiece. The platform the sample sits on can be raised or lowered and, with a bit of precision and patience, you can get good focus and detail. It's not perfect though, because the platform doesn't always move smoothly. Occasionally there is a click and it jumps slightly out of place (and therefore focus) when you are trying to get the distance right. The box could be seen as being a bit misleading, and yet also entirely correct when it says you can do 50 experiments with the kit. In truth you can do hundreds – if you count the number as being the 18 samples (3 each to a slide) that come in the box plus however many samples you the user choose to find around the kitchen and garden and prepare by yourself using the impressively large set of tools you are provided with. The experiment book gives some small amount of information on what to look for in the 18 samples, and makes the number up to 50 by making suggestions of items you could look for around the house. It's not a bad idea by any means, and I'm just mentioning it for the sake of clarity. The kit has seemingly everything that could be required for preparing samples, including slides, scalpel, needle, tweezers, thin-slicer and red dye. Every page in the experiment book has the text in six languages, which means it only gives a sixth of the detailed information it could have done – hence my comment earlier that discoveries should be supplemented by further reading materials – maybe that's another idea for a present.

This is the second Buki science toy I’ve owned and, like the first one, I’m impressed with the general quality of it. You can get cheaper plastic microscopes, and I’ve had one of those too, but they aren’t up to the standard of this metal one. In terms of build quality and optic performance, this is easily up to secondary school biology class standards. Adjustments to the focus are steady and easy to control. It might not withstand years of abuse and accidents in the way that science equipment had to when I was at school, but for personal use, it’s remarkably nice. It has a good solid feel to it that makes it feel more expensive than it actually is.The results are pretty impressive too.The light the microscope gives off is bright and well focussed so that you can see through specimens even if they aren’t completely paper-thin, which is good for fiddling things like leaves. The manual has a lot of entry-level science stuff in it, a good jumping-on point for explaining natural world stuff to kids, but following the suggested experiments in the book is a slightly frustrating experience- it’s not quite as well thought-out or as well-ordered as I might have liked- but once you get the right things in the right places, and the right batteries in (not included in the pack I got), you do get to see some really rather interesting stuff. The packaging is large and very protective, but ends up seeming quite wasteful. There’s no box or other convenient way to keep the microscope and accessories safe inbetween uses, besides putting it back in the original box which takes up quite a lot of space due to excess polystyrene. In an untidy bedroom or with careless handling this set will rapidly become broken or incomplete. This is a really neat entry-level kit for introducing kids to the micro world. While there are elements which I think are imperfect, such as the packaging, certain elements of the manual, or the non-included batteries (normally a bugbear of mine), despite all of that I’m still opting for 5 stars because it’s a very impressive central bit of kit, and surprisingly good considering the asking price (fifty-one quid at time of writing).

I have recently received a microscope for about half this price and now I can clearly see (no pun intended) that you get what you pay for. Right from taking the heavy based microscope out of the box, there is a feel of good quality (for a child's microscope). On the last one, my daughter of nine at the time, found using it difficult, as did I. With this model, she unpackaged it entirely herself, I popped some batteries in (3xAA not included) and she carried on unpacking. I swiftly removed some dissection tools, I would certainly only allow them to be used with parental guidance (the scalpel possibly just not at all). The plastic tweezers could be sharper, but they grip well. What was delightful is that there is a really good selection of slides that are pre-made. My daughter managed to insert these and view them with the 10x magnifying lens immediately - with zero aid. This tells me that this hits the target market just right. Exclamations of 'gross' etc soon followed. With the viewing lenses there is a little manoeuvring required to get a full visual of the slide, sometime the lens itself occludes vision and you need to pull your eye away from the piece a little. It was great that she worked this out herself, with no complaint, again suggesting that it was not a deal breaker. It's likely that such toys/learning aids, are used intermittently, but offer up a real opportunity to engage in science in the real world. The easier they are to use, with meaningful results, increases such repeat use. The quality of this microscope and it's accessories, suggest that this is a better option than others available and as such, may well deliver more for the money. Although we have only used a few of the accessories, they will certainly aid repeat play and the instruction manual also encourages repeat use with a wide range of experiments. Also worth noting that my child could actually pack it all away easily too. Didn't expect that!

A good quality first microscope to get a child interested in the micro-world. I got this for my 6 year old grandson who is fascinated by insects, so that he can look at them in detail. It does say that this microscope is suitable for ages 8 upwards, but I intend to show him how to use it and look at things with him at first until he is old enough to do it on his own. For an educational toy it is very well made and robust and yet it does the job of a real microscope with three zoom levels, x100, x250 and x1000. You need to supply your own batteries so don't give it to the child unless you have already put the batteries in or this could cause disappointment. It comes with all sorts of extras, like tweezers and petri dishes and ready made-up slides, as well as blank slides so that he can put his own things on to look at in detail (I'm thinking here of things like squashed ants and fly wings and so on!) The instruction book is a bit of a disappointment as all the languages are combined on each page so you have to find the English version on every page rather than just discarding the languages you don't need. However on the plus side this could help an older child find out what the items are called in other languages if they want. There is no carrying case supplied so you will need to find your own bag or box to protect the microscope and store all the little bits that go with it.

This is an awesome microscope for kids. It's built really well and comes with three magnifications on the lower bit (I need to brush up on my terminology) and two lenses with different magnification on the eye peice. It has a mirror for natural back light and also an led when lacking in natural light. The is also a top light. The backlight has a range of filters to reduce the brightness for contrast and also different colours which make the objects sometimes way more vivid. It's a solid metal build with a rotating eyepiece so you and the little one can share in the fun.It comes with plenty of slides for starters and some blank ones and dye to make your own.My lad is eight years old and loves crystals so has been putting lots of stones and gems underneath as well as human hair, fruit peel, insects, pretty much anything that fits.I can't stress how well this kit is put together, the experiments are good but to be honest I've only read them, not done them yet as he's enjoying putting everything underneath it he can find. It's also great for sharing in their excitement and wonderment and tops an iPad any day of the week.

A great microscope that's perfect for starters, or kids that want to get in to it but as a parent you're dubious of forking out for 'proper' microscopy kit. Compared to microscopes I remember from school, the quality is on par.The kit comes with 6 premade slides of various natural and man made materials, and kit for sourcing your own things - petri dish, tweezers, slides, mounts etc. The manual is great and very informative, in multiple languages however so you have to search for the english version which is annoying (all the languages are on the same page), but it is very good at explaining what the material is and why you can see what you see.Requires 3 x AAA batteries (not included)that you need a small crosshead screwdriver for, or just the tip of a knife very carefully.Don't get me wrong - it's still a kids toy - but it's a very good version of one. White coated metal body with plastic details, the build is fantastic and it's not disappointing in quality. The up-and-down wheel jars a little sometimes and slightly, but it's really not a worthy mentionable problem.

This is a sturdy and solid microscope. Made from metal makes it heavy and durable. It has a light which can be set direct or indirect. The set comes with some pre set slides and a kit to prepare your own as well as a petri dish, micro slicer, needle , scalpel, tweezers, spatula, stirring rod and some bottles. The vision through the microscope is a lot clearer than I expected, I have tried a cheaper microscope in the past and the vision was very poor this however is very good so will encourage children to find everyday pieces to look at and explore. The set comes with a fairly good instruction book which gives some useful tips and ideas, but if you search the internet there are some good ideas and books to found.Te set comes well packaged in a large box and set in polystyrene, is a pity however that it does not come with a microscope cover and and maybe a specially designed plastic box in which to keep all the tools and utensils, and a record book to write down experiments and results.

Straight out of the box, this microscope feels well made - no cheap plastic tat here, but a solid and robust metal microscope, which feels like it will last for many years. The image you can see through each of the lenses, is crisp and clear and has been a source of wonder for my 8 and 10 year-olds.There are plenty of accessories that come with the set too - so first and foremost you have pre-prepared slides, but also the tools to allow you to create your own slides yourself. The instruction book is decent, but like many manuals, the multilingual element, means that there is less contained than first meets the eye,but it is a good way to introduce your child/ren to some of the kinds of experiment that you can do with this instrument. The lack of case for storage is a shame, but we have found a sturdy plastic storage box to keep it in and some small tupperware to hold the smaller tools and items to keep them safe when not in use.

More expensive than some microscopes, this is worth the extra money as you get magnification up to 1000x, lots of extras and a large box that makes a more impressive gift.My son was very impressed with the slides that were provided and also enjoyed looking at a drop of water than I'd retrieved from the lid of a dustbin that had collected rainwater. He was fascinated to find little microscopic organisms swimming around. He found it easy to use and didn't need much help from me, part from putting the supplied LED battery into the bulb on the reverse side of the reflector - a slightly cumbersome and fiddly task that should be done with care.Overall, it looks and feels solid and although it's aimed at children ,it feels more than a genuine scientific instrument than a cheap, plasticky toy.

Well made, simple to use and quite attractive. It's obviously not a professional tool but it looks the part and functions well. I really cannot make any complaint as to it's quality. The only thing which I'd add to improve it would be some kind of camera so kids can record their findings and share them with others. The instructions are good, the box has survived being unpacked and repacked a few times and my nephew keeps going back to it, looking at different things. So far it's been more popular in the summer than the winter, as there are more things outside he wants to look at under the microscope. There are quite a few parts,so if your child is prone to leaving everything everywhere it's probably a good idea to help them put it away after they are done.

It says it comes with a cr2032 battery when it does not. Says it needs 3 aaa batteries when really you need aa batteries. Exasperating! Just the sort of thing to ruin a Christmas morning. Feels quite solidly built and comes with all sorts of equipment. Also it would have been nice to have had a storage container or carry case for this price but you just have the polystyrene packaging and cardboard box to put it back in. The instruction book is good but in lots of languages so there is not really much in it about each specimen. The actual performance of the optics is surprisingly good. Easy to focus, good sharp detail and very slight distortion/ refraction round the edges of the image.Cannot wait until it snows!

This is a proper microscope! It's a bit pricier than some you see in toy shops, but if you really want to get children excited about science and exploring the world around them, I think this is worth the money. Cheaper microscopes do a poor job - they can be difficult to focus and break easily. The BUKI microscope is so much better - feels sturdy and focuses clearly on the object under scruitiny. The set comes with some ready-made slides that you can have a good look at. It also comes with some equipment to collect specimens to look at yourself.I highly recommend this ... a great educational toy.

This is an excellent piece of equipment; my 12 year old son who I'd bought this for as a birthday gift has to fight me for it! Fantastic quality lenses and build, sturdy and easy to use. Neither you nor your children will be disappointed! Brilliant range of accessories and sample slides. The HD 360 swivel mechanism of the viewer is extremely useful so as not do disturb the specimens being viewed whilst ensuring that everyone gets to see it in crystal clear clarity. Highly recommend!

Great piece of equipment for budding scientists. Samples given are great start for impatient little ones to explore. Need to install three AA batteries. One button battery provided.Down point: Wished instructions are more detailed as it doesn't explain which combination of lens to use, how to use red dye, colour filter etc.Happy with product overall.

Much better than others on the market (this is our third!) as you get so many more bits and pieces in this so you can do so much more. My 8 year old has enjoyed learning about petri dishes and how germs grow. This is easy to use and well designed for small hands also well constructed in that it is solidly made.
