I agree with all the recommendations for this product. But first warning, which I overlooked, is that it does not arrive with the actual caterpillars yet - was disappointing for my 11 year old who was waiting excitedly for the product after saving her pocket money. This is for good reason though. The product comes with a voucher which you use to order your caterpillars - we did this online and it was very straight forward. This gives you a change to make sure you are around for the amount of time to care for the caterpillars and butterflies and also if giving for a gift, to ensure that the recipient will be able to order the caterpillars for a time that is suitable. We had a couple of queriesfrom an over worried new young entemologist which were quickly cleared up by the very helpful staff at insect lore and it is now 4 weeks later and we have butterflies - it is summer now though so this process has been very quick. When you receive the caterpillars, you simply unpack them and watch as they grow fatter and fatter. When they become coccoons, this is the tricky bit as you have to transfer them to the butterfly net with a very steady hand. the coccoons are attached to the liner of the lid of the container in which they arrived and this liner was not intact when we had to move our coccoons so it is a delicate operation and we used pins to pin the liner to the net - (we tried the tape option first but this did not work).Butterflies are one day old today so much excitement in decorating their net with leaves and we are feeding them with oranges. So far so good.Would recommend this product. Although it is a bit pricey you can use the net again and re-order more caterpillars. Would be suitable from age 4 onwards I would think as all children would find this process fascinating - has been excellent for mum & dad too.

I bought the butterfly pavilion which promised 10 caterpillars for my reception class to enjoy during their Growing project.Despite the farce that arose around the initial delivery of the butterfly farm I would still recommend it as a learning project in school. The first pavillion arrived without the promised certificate and we were unable to claim the caterpillars. Amazon replaced the product without question and a postage paid returns voucher. The second pavillion arrived intact and I duly went on line to Insect-Lore to order the caterpillars to find that only two were valid with the voucher code given on the certificate. I emailed Insect-Lore who said there was a problem at their printers who were putting wrong codes on the vouchers. They rectified the certificate for me and 10 live caterpillars duly arrived. The process of growing caterpillars to butterfly can take 5 - 7 weeks. Had the initial delivery been complete we would have butterflies by now, however, due to all the delays it is now probable that the caterpillars will make their cocoons next week and emerge during the half term break. Although the children are excitedly watching the caterpillars grow in their pots the whole experience will be lost if they should make their cocoons or emerge during the holidays.I would recomend that should you order this product you allow plenty of time for errors beyond your control.

Ordered this for my four year old grand daughter who saw it advertised on children's television. Having read reviews I knew that I would get a certificate for the butterflies which makes good sense because you need to order them at a time when you are not going to be away from home for a few weeks. The ordering was easily done on line and the caterpillars arrived safely. We read the instructions carefully which meant that we knew exactly what to expect at each stage. The first week or so is not very exciting as all the caterpillars do is eat and get fat but even so we enjoyed watching their progress especially when they all moved to the lids of the pots and hung upside down exactly as they should.Moving them into the habitat was a little fiddly and we fastened them with safety pins rather than tape and then it's another waiting game but it's definitely worth it. Watching the butterflies emerge is magical. We were lucky that all ten of ours survived and feeding them was easy. We chose a nice warm day to release them and managed to get some wonderful photographs of my grand daughter with them perched on her open hands. Although we bought them at her request we enjoyed the experience as much if not more than she did and we will definitely be ordering at least one more batch of caterpillars this year. I can't recommend this product highly enough for nature lovers of all ages

Bought this for my daughter's 5th birthday. Contains net house for butterflies (pavilion), instruction booklet and voucher to send off for 10 Painted Lady caterpillars. Unfortunately the first kit we received did not contain the voucher. Contacted amazon who quickly sent new kit. Requested caterpillars online using voucher code, paying £2.99 p&p. 2 pots each containing 5 caterpillars and food arrived within 3 days.My 3 children (aged 2, 5 and 8) (and us parents) are fascinated to watch the caterpillars grow day by day. They are even more fascinated as one caterpillar, although alive and moving is not growing like the others. They insist on showing the caterpillars to everyone who visits.Once the caterpillars produce chrysalids instructions say to remove lid and place chrysalids, attached to paper lid in to pavillion and wait for butterflies to hatch (7 to 14 days.) Once hatched you can then feed the butterflies using sugar water, fruit etc. The kit contains all the instructions you need. The whole process from receiving caterpillars to releasing butterflies takes between 3 to 5 weeks so you need to bear this in mind when requesting caterpillars.Although we are still only at the caterpillar stage at the moment I would highly recommend this kit.

I bought this as a Father’s Day present for my dad who loves butterflies! It had us all mesmerised! Voucher to obtain caterpillars can be easily done online and the cups of caterpillars arrived within a couple of days. The process of caterpillars to chrysalis only took a matter of days to watch them shake is incredible, all 10 butterflies emerged within 3 or 4 days after chrysalis possible due to us keeping in a humid room (and during recent very hot weather) one chrysalis fell from the lid but still emerged no problem. After a few days we released the butterflies into the open greenhouse where they enjoyed the plants and flowers before moving on.This product is aimed for kids but all of usadults thoroughly enjoyed the caterpillars to butterflies process.Highly recommend as a great gift for all! I will be getting another kit for myself next summer! ? ??

This is a great product and the only reason I'm not giving it 5 is because of the hidden charges involved 'after' you have received the product. When the product arrives (usually next day) all you get is a plastic collapsible net! they call it the habitat. It also comes with voucher(s). You then need to go to a different website and order your caterpillars using the vouchers! There is an extra £3.99 delivery charge for this on top of what you pay on Amazon when you buy! Then, there is a 2-3 week wait to get the caterpillars. But once you get it, it is 'unbelievable'. When they arrived, they looked dead but the instructions tell you they are not! and that's right. Our caterpillars are 'huge'now and we are having great fun. They also guarantee that at least 3 of the 5 butterflies in a cup will produce butterflies which is quite good. Fingers crossed!

I got this for my 7 year old son and we started with 10 tiny caterpillars. They grew quickly and it was great to see them grow day by day. After about 2 weeks, they all formed chrysalides. It was a bit tricky transferring them from the cup to the mesh habitat, as they shake to warn off predators and we were worried about hurting them. But it went smoothly and now, about a week after that, we have had 3 butterflies hatch so far (with more looking ready to hatch today or tomorrow) and we are feeding them orange and sugar water and have decorated the habitat with leaves and flowers. They are really lovely to watch and my son has rushed down every morning since we first got them to check on them and report on their progress. We will definitely get some more next year! A great product - fun and educational.

Firstly, this isn't a toy! It's far too exciting and part of every child's gaining of knowledge of the natural world to be treated as such. It's excellent and has given great pleasure to my daughter and grand daughter (35 and 5) to whom I gave it as a joint present as something they could do together. It's taken just 25 days for 6 Red Admiral Butterflies to appear and there will probably be two more. They Skyped me tonight to show me the ones that hatched today! Very exciting as I was sceptical about this kit. It's important to order the caterpillars to be delivered on a day when you know you can start the process going almost immediately.Don't have them delivered when you are on holiday!!This is a great kit and I will definitely buy another one (at least!).

I have actually bought four of these in the last year for my son and as gifts for others. Children and adults love them.It is magical to watch the caterpillars grow from little dots into adult caterpillars and then see them transform into cacoons and then butterflies (and yes if you watch you can get to see the actual moment of transformation in action)My first batch of butterflies the only problem I had was the weather. I was struggling to find a suitable day for release day, but the butterflies left happily when we eventually got good weatherI admit with my later purchases I did also start purchasing special butterfly nectar as well in order to feed my butterflies, but you can feed them well enough without

This is brilliant. My 3 year old can see everything without needing to touch anything. We were too late to order caterpillars for this season, so will wait for next spring. But, we found some Cabbagewhite eggs & hatched them in a separate container with fresh cabbage each day (the mesh holes in the pavilion are too big for juvenile caterpillars).Once the caterpillars had become crysalids, we transferred the container to the inside of the pavilion, with the lid off.Three out of 4 just hatched 2 days ago & seem to be liking their temporary home.Once they breed (hoping the 4th is male because 3 are female)we'll let them out & restart the cycle.Looking forward to ordering the Painted lady caterpillars.

My 4 year old loved this - note that this doesn't come with the caterpillars in the box you have to send off for those (the voucher is in the box). And they may take a week or two to arrive as they only send them on specific days. Also only for certain months - think it is May-September.You can watch the caterpillars moving around and growing in the pots - we tried measuring them, counted them and the amount of poo! Then they will go into a cocoon for a few days and then emerge as butterflies - great to watch. And setting them free was lovely too - lots of smiles from the kids.

this is such a good idea for children and adults. and will give a sustained interest for many months, and can be used again and again.i thought that it could have been aslightly bigger,. and be aware that this is not something that can be used immediatly. as you have to send the voucher away to recieve the caterpillars. also be aware that you then have to pay packaging and posting on top to recieve the caterpillars.so you should add an extra £4.00 approx to the overall financial outlay.but very educational.and entertaining.

I bought this for a four year old girl, and it has been a fantastic success. She loves it, and so does her 1 year old sister - actually the whole family are fascinated seeing the 10 caterpillars grow, and are looking forward to the butterflies in a few weeks. The pavilion is very light, well constructed and will fold back down very easily when not occupied. The caterpillars come with feeding pots and are easy to order and arrive quickly - and you can easily order more when the butterflies have been releasedI bought

the item looks great , i ordered two as presents for both my grandchildren ( different addresses ) and though I knew they'd have a voucher to send off to get their caterpillars , I was disappointed to realise they'd actually have to pay for Post & Packing. I'd rather this have been added to the initial cost rather than the receiver of the gift ( i'e my families ) have to pay for the P&P , its a small amount but just the principal of the thing I object to , sort of takes the edge off the gift

Purchased this for ourselves and 2yr old as she developed a fear of butterflies when they go near her. We keep other invertabrates and she loves them so we thought this will encourage her. so far she loves the caterpillars which all arrived alive and quickly. Yes when you input the voucher to recieve them you have to pay extra postage. As long as you read the instructions fully and leave the caterpillars well alone untill they pupate you will soon enjoy some beautiful butterflies.
