You get a lot in the box with this toy - a 23cm high microscope, ready made up slides and samples and everything you need to make more slides with commonly found items from around the home like onion peel and even cells from your mouth. The microscope itself is the main interest and is fairly easy to set up - you have to unscrew the back of the integrated small light and insert a battery and you are good to go. The light turns on and off by swivelling it up and down - I mention this as it was nowhere on the otherwise comprehensive instructions. For a toy microscope there's quite a bit of scope, 3 magnification levels, various filters and the aforementioned small light and a mirror. You can use the microscope with natural light, aided by a your own lamp or with the integrated one.We started off looking at the cotton fibres, as suggested in the manual. It was a bit of a learning curve adjusting the height of the lens, just like it is with a real microscope but actually results are surprisingly good. We liked looking at the snake scales and have also made a few slides. These are plastic with sticky bits rather than the glass ones I experimented with in my youth, but they work well. My eleven and nine year old really are enjoying "playing" with this - I'd say about age 10 is ideal, younger children may find it frustrating. The manual is in multiple languages, with French first (this is a French made toy), which is a slightly annoying to a child, though the instructions are in perfect English and clear to understand.I wish the packaging was a bit more inclusive to girls and the microscope could be a bit more solidly made, the metal body is solid but the bits you twiddle are plastic coated and need to be used for careful play. Overall though it's a good item for anyone interested in science and I think good value for what you get.

Item was purchased as a Christmas present for my daughter, and she has absolutely loved it.The microscope comes well packaged and with a decent sized book with info about usage etc. There are plenty of packed in extras such as blank slides, pre-made slides, pots, scalpel etc.She has really enjoyed using the pre-bundled slides as well as going out on walks and collecting her own materials to put under the scope.there is a build in battery powered light with works well, as well as being able to flip the light over and use the mirror to reflect sun light on bright days.A really good fun, education gift for any child!Pros- fun- plenty of extras- well buildCons- none

absolutely fantastic ! bought this for my Niece who is 10 as a Christmas gift and she absolutely loved it. We spent all of Christmas day finding different samples to observe under the microscope.Great microscope with a multitude of different zoom settings, a whole bunch of slides, labels, ready made slides, petri dish, child safe scalple, tweesers and prodding tool plus a book of experiments and sample containers/test tubes made of plastic.Utterly impressed at the child friendliness of this product (though I would still recomend adult supervision and participation). We had hours of fun together which were educational and inspiring

Well packaged and easy to use. Has loads of bits in it and very versatile. Has a number of pre-made slides to get started. I seem to remember it needed a screwdriver to insert the battery. If this is a gift maybe worth inserting the battery before you wrap it or making sure there is a screwdriver close at hand.

My 7 year old daughter is keen on all science things as she started doing it at school and is liking this subject. So the microscope was an excellent gift for Christmas. It is good for young kids beginning to experiment. Recommended.

My 8-year-old nephew absolutely loved it for his birthday present.Plenty of spare slides, and all the bits and pieces you need to cut and stick new samples.I'd recommend an adult to supervise the use of the knife tools at first.
