I've kept ants before when I was younger, but I decided to buy another one for a science project (and also because I've always liked nature - I know it sounds cheesy). The instruction manual was good, although I kind of knew all of the ant species info already, and there's plenty of space for a large colony of Lasius niger or Lasius flavus. However, I ordered two magnifying bowls and three sections of clear plastic tubing from Interplay UK's spares section on their website, because I feel that one section of tubing and one small magnifying bowl isn't enough space for the ants. With three bowls connected, they had plenty of space to run around, which made it more interesting - I put the food in a different bowl each time so they couldn't predict where it would be.For people saying it's cruel - it's only cruel if you don't know what you're doing. Only collect ants in the Spring, Summer and early Autumn before they start to shut down - disturbing their nest in the winter is bad, and they are more likely to not survive the transition process.Ants will die if you don't know what to do, so be careful. If you can look after them and collect AT LEAST forty ants, the colony should be okay and thrive. Some ants will die as they only live for a few months in the wild, and if you pick some from your garden they may already be very old and therefore be close to the end of their lives anyway.I wouldn't recommend adding a queen as I think Ant World isn't large enough for more than fifty ants - some Lasius niger colonies can reach 5,000 at maturity or even more!

If you think you are going to buy this and magically have a thriving colony then you are mistaken. Ant keeping requires some pre-thought and planning but ultimately is very rewarding.I have bought a few of these over the years and always come back to them despite building a couple of my own nests. Why? Because they are well priced, do exactly what you need and are versatile and expandable.Construction is very easy. Use a folded piece of paper to load in the sand and do it in a sink or outside just be sure. I don't use the plastic insert that you stick stickers on, which make sit even easier and lets you use all the sand easily.Ants - THE KIT DOESN'T COME WITH ANTS.I always collect my own queen ants in the nuptial flight season. I store them in test tubes with some water soaked cotton wool and a small dab of honey. You then have to wait until the following spring before you'll even have a few ants to look at. I also attach a small reptile heating pad to one area of my nest to extend the active season of the nest. Ants without a queen might tunnel etc but you'll have a limited experience.More ants (brood boosting)... you can harvest additional cocoons from other an nests and place them in yours. The queen and the workers don't know the difference and will treat them as their own. Make sure you don't take too many and that they are the same species!Summary - with some time and love you'll have a thriving nest. This kit is great.

I bought this for my daughter for Xmas and we have just strated getting ants around so we captured a few and put them in. The ants dug tunnels pretty quickly and seemed to be ok for a few days. But little did we realise that the two slots that you use to fill the enclosure with sand are perfect places for the ants to escape. After a few days the ants had tunneled straight over to one of these slots (they are pretty intelligent obviously) and quite a few managed to escape in my daughters room much to the amusement of her but to the horror of my wife. Still I have since covered over the two slots with electricians tape and the ants wont escape again. But we wont be putting this back into her room after this it will stay in the conservatory. It is an amazing educational house to see what ants do every day. Certainly they tunnel very well if the soil is kept a little moist you an see it very well.By the way the ants are not uncomfortable they just cannot reproduce as there is no queen. But they dont die if you feed them regularly and keep the soil watered a little. And you catch them by cathing them in a bowl and tipping them in the top. Its pretty easy when you get the hang of it. We just found an apple tree in the garden that they like to go up to get the aphids and caught them off that.Definitely recommended but I would certainly recommend taping up the holes if you get this before you put the ants in.

Ant World is very easy to assemble. The sand was relatively straightforward to put into the housing though I would recommend doing it over a piece of paper as there were a few spillages! The instruction booklet contains instructions on how to assemble Ant World, there are also instructions on how to collect ants, how to look after them and some general information about ants too.Unfortunately we weren't very successful in collecting our own ants. Although we found a few, it was quite hard to catch them and, after collecting less than 10 over the course of a few nights we gave up!If, like us, you are struggling to collect your own ants, you can order some from Interplay.Unfortunately our first lot died straight away and we were sent a second lot. The ants arrive in another bowl which you can attach to your Ant World with the plastic tubing provided.Ant World is recommended for children aged 5+ and I would say this is a good guideline. At 6, my son gets a lot from this as, not only is it fun for him to set up and watch, it is also educational.Overall it is a good product and I think it is good value for money.

Bought this as a gift, was fiddly to put together but once it was the children loved It, although.... warning here if you don't want your kids to be traumatised by carnage.... COLLECT THE ANTS FROM THE SAME COLONY! A lesson learnt here after what we witnessed to be an ant version of game of thrones! It wasn't pretty, there were heads flying off all over the place, and little bodies laying still whilst being trampled on.. it was an event we will relive forever !After we buried the ants... yes, you read it right.. BURIED THE ANTS.. (this is what my life has come to) we started again.. 8 ants taken from 1 COLONY (sorry queen but they work for us now) it was all good,we haven't witnessed any tunnels yet but they're transporting dirt and food from one side of the tank to the other... which is quite mesmerising to watch! All in all a great buy.

After reading and learning from the reviews, I finally caved and purchased this for my son whilst taking on board the sellotape get tips (all of the loose edges are sealed tight!)My four year old loves all bugs, as much as they make me shudder, so I bought this for him and daddy to set up. We only managed to catch a few ants so far but have a nice colony in our garden we keep collecting from. Fortunately our ants seems pretty happy, and have already made lots of nice tunnels despite only living in there for 2 days so far :) my son is fascinated and I must admit, I've been found sitting next to the ant farm watching them carting soil around! No escapees, lots of active bugs and tunnels - win.Really great little gift, highly recommended.

I have used for over a year and a half with ants from my garden both black and red at different times. I now have caught my own queen and will try to maintain a growing colony from scratch. I suspect that I will need to build something of my own as the colony grows but this product is ideal for anyone wanting to start keeping ants and to learn some of the basics. One basic I learned is that you cannot feed your ants pieces of orange as it will kill them within a day or two. Too many ant friendly sites omit this point saying you can feed them nearly everything you eat yourself. I only found it by looking under pest sites on how best to kill ants after I lost my ants for a second time trying tofeed them oranges.

I looked around the internet and read a lot of reviews before buying this for my 7-year-old daughter and was very alarmed to find that so many people had disappointing experiences with ant farms. We have had a very good experience with Ant World, however. I think that the key is the very detailed instruction booklet that comes with the kit: it really makes all the difference. Parents need to get involved with the set-up, but the process is very simple, and the end result is what you want: an opportunity to watch the amazing creatures at work. I also bought this product as a birthday present for another little girl, and she's really enjoying it, too. I highly recommend Ant World.

My 4yr old was given this as a birthday present. The instructions are a piece of cake, as is construction. My son's enthusiam for watching ants crawl around has been heart warming. It's an excellent idea and I have found the design to be escape proof. The manufacturer's website is a good source of additional information. As ants are fairly inactive on the surface during wet and cold winters you will struggle to populate Ant World at this time of year. Best as a spring/summer activity.Would be 5* but for the price, which is a but much for plastic and a small bag of sand. You could make your own from a matching pair of picture frames from a charity shop.

I bought this for my 8 year old grandson for his birthday on Christmas day! He was thrilled with it. We set it all up for him which he would have been unable to do by himself, and I ordered the ants after Christmas.I rang the firm to ask a couple of questions and spoke to a very helpfull and pleasant man. The ants arrived and we attached them to the farm. They have been very busy ever since making lots of tunnels, and they live in my grandson's bedroom. He feeds them regularly and is fascinated by them. There is no chance of them escaping as long as all the instructions are followed.A brilliant product, great value.

My son of 6 got this as a birthday present from a friend and he and his brother (age 4) have been fascinated by it ever since. It is fiddly collecting the ants and getting them into the plastic box - adult help is essential - but the boys really enjoyed finding an ants nest and locating the queen which you need to do. It was a great success watching the ants build the colony and fun for the boys to be actively involved by feeding the ants - made a good 'show and tell' at school as well. Can be cleaned out and used again - although you would have to get more sand. Really recommend this.

brought for sons birthday easy to set up went on website to order the ants to find they dont stock them and to buy from a different website. ordered a queen with eggs brood and workers. so far they have not ventured into the main area but that because the queen needs lots and lots of workers and is currently nesting in her test tube nest she arrived in as advised by breeder. good little starter set or ideal if just collecting from the garden but catching enough ants will be tricky.

i like it alot i am just waiting for the ants to come in the post so i can put them in. it said it is easy to assemble but i found it quite hard, because you have to put all the parts in the right place or it won't fit together. here's a little tip when you pour the sand in don't pour it in when it's in the paket, pour it in to a tub and then pour it in plus, they give you more sand than you need. another thing is that if you don't like ants don't buy it. thank you for reading.

When my daughter asked for ant farm for her birthday the last thing i imagined was it to be fun or interesting but this is awesome literally intriguing and can watch them for ages they are more interesting how they clean themselves everything im more intersted in this than my daughter. I would totally reccomend this ant farm i added photos that show day 1 upto day 20 and the changes the ants made. Am now thinking of getting one of the other kits from the range.

I'm really pleased with this .We ended up purchasing the ants because trying to catch enough from a single colony is surprisingly hard, but now we are at the stage of observing them my son is really interested and happy with it.The little booklet that comes with it is informative and helpful as it also gives information on how to keep the ants happy once you have managed to obtain some ( hunted ;) purchased or otherwise ).Very enjoyable educational product .
