I remember I had a set of walkie-talkies when I was little but I'm so old mine were huge, bright red and were connected with about half-a-mile of bell wire, with the obvious limitations. These BUKI owl-shaped walkie-talkies are adorable and sized just about right for little hands and "Look Ma, no wires!"The need 3 AAA cells each so have those ready because none are included. As annoying battery compartments go these are especially annoying and need a tiny Philips screwdriver to open and you also have to remove a belt clip on the back to get it the batteries in. You can switch each walkie-talkie on or off by pressing the owl's beak for 3 seconds and if they're left inactive for 30 minutes they switch themselves off to save battery power. That means they won't work like telephones and you can only call the other person when their handset is on, but they're intended as a toy rather than a true communication device. When switched on you call the other person by tapping the beak and that triggers a short ringtone on the other handset, thankfully just one short burst and not an endless ringtone. To respond you keep the red 'Talk' button pressed for as long as you speak and when you release it there's a short chirp sound on the receiving handset so you don't have to keep saying "over" like they do in the movies - though it's probably more fun if you do. The eyes of the owl light up red while you're transmitting, either the ringtone or voice, and glow green while you're receiving which is a nice touch. The speaker is fairly clear and loud enough to hear without driving everyone else nuts, which is lucky because there's no volume adjustment either. The microphone, which is hidden under the owl's right eye, is less sensitive and to be heard clearly you really need to hold the walkie-talkie near your mouth. Kids soon get the hang of it and it was an instant hit in our family and the kids disappeared off into the garden to test the range. They worked pretty well between house and garden, although the more walls between you the weaker the signal gets. We can't confirm yet that they work over the quoted 2km distance but they're pretty good in open spaces and are lots of fun for younger kids, even the ageing ones.

The actual units are pretty small, about 12cm, which is ideal for a child's small hands. The owl design just adds to the attraction, with the nose call button and big red call button in the middle. You get a belt clip too but as I could not prise these units out of the hands of the little 'uns it was difficult to ascertain whether this would ever get used! The range is advertised as 2km which was impossible to test. We used it at a range of, perhaps, 100m and it was fine. I mean, where are 4 and 5-year olds going to be that far apart?Battery life was good (the units require 6 x AA batteries, something to consider if you are gifting this, and don't buy cheap if you want to avoid disappointment)and after a few minutes it goes into standby mode to save power. I'm wondering whether a decent set of rechargeables would work well, that Daddy could then recharge overnight, ready for the park the next day?Sounds quality was acceptable, given the sort of things children say it wasn't exactly a top priority. They seemed to understand one another very well so that was that.A good toy, (there's not really an educational aspect I can think of for these) but it does sort of get them used to remote communication.

OK, this is a cool easy to operate walkie talkie that doesn't feature anything like private channels, or indeed channels at all. The eyes light up when you press the button and when a message is incoming, which is cool. Now for the things I didn't like:- the screws on the battery cover are really poor quality, one of them stripped the first time I tried to unscrew it meaning I had to drill it out. Once you have no screw, you can't hold the back on unless you use tape. Not good. They should really have a clip mechanism with screw as backup and they should use screws that are good for more than one use.- auto power off after about 10 mins is good for the batteries but renders these pretty much useless for any kind of "in the field" use.Kids camping in the garden? Forget it. The other walkie talkie will have powered down. Your message won't get through. So overall it's a toy you can give your kids but in most cases where you need a walkie talkie, you are gonna want some with a few more options.

These are really, really effective walkie talkies. My brother and nephews spent most of the day with us today and the kids spent a huge chunk of the day playing with these. Much to their Dad's annoyance, as apparently he had previously bought them a set of far more expensive walkie talkies than the RRP on these, and they didn't work at all. We didn't experience any interference problems or find our handsets interfering with anyone else's devices - these were clear as a bell, easy to use and a heck of a lot of fun. My house is rural, the last on a lane and we experienced no interference at all, even using the first channel on the handsets (equivalent of password = 'password').The handsets were easy to set up and pair, and functions such as the call button, changing the 'ring tone' and engaging/disengaging a torch. The only issues I had with these were that they require 8 (!!!!!!) AAA batteries, 4 in each handset (inevitably, not included) and that the packaging was easily twice the size needed.

Now, here's a bit of packaged marketing if ever there was one. These walkie talkies are boxed and clearly aimed at children - which of course for young kids is great fun. However, once out of the box its clear that these are Buki branded items that are similarly boxed and aimed for an adult market as well, for instance on building sites and between motorbikes where I recall buying something almost identical a few years ago with included headset.Bottom line is that these work very well as comms devices with a number of available channels and sub channels to keep the line clear.I'd say the target market of 8 is just about bang on as any younger and as I noted with my grandchildren, they get a bit confused with the buttons and options.Just be careful when you type in 'buki....' if googling them.

A cool pair of walkie talkies from Buki. They work incredibly well for toys. The box claims a range of 3 km and that may well be true when there's no major obstructions in the way. Our niece and nephew haven't actually tested them to that range yet. But they have used them without any issues in our local park which is a good two thirds of a mile from one end to the other. They are reasonably easy to operate. That's to say the kids worked it all out after about 10 minutes. The audio too is impressive its very clear...not at all crackly or hissy. The kids are having great fun with them and that's the main thing. I've marked them down a star only because of the over the top packaging.Buki could easily have marketed these in a package a third or even a quarter of the size.

Although this is aimed and marketed for children these are fairly standard walkie talkies. The box they come in is very light, the walkie talkies weigh 75 gms without batteries and 120gms with. Batteries aren't supplied, they take 4 x AAA each, so 8 in total. Operation is fairly intuitive, children had no problem using them, range seemed good and quality of speech was fine, certainly clear enough across a playing field. These also have a useful light so can be used as a torch when needed, there is also a headphone jack but this is a 2.5mm size rather than the more common 3.5mm. Age range is given as from 8, which seems about right as that age range got a lot of fun out of them.

Considering the price of these I was expecting the sound quality to be really bad and arrange to be poor, however I was wrong on both accounts. the sound quality is actually quite high considering what appears to be quite flimsy design and the Range is far beyond what I was expecting. both kids can quite easily use them and hear each other and it has caused many hours of giggling and laughing. I can highly recommend these as a reasonably cheap alternative to the more expensive options I should give you a reasonable amount of entertainment yourself.

These are a pair of very good Walkie Talkies that, despite the branding as a children's toy, are actually well-made and have really good range. The box was so light that I figured that it might actually be empty, but on opening all was present and correct. The wallow-talkies are quite small (designer for small hands, as the manufacturers say). They certainly work well over short distances (i.e. the length of our 50m garden), and the sound/reception is clear and far better than we expected. Very good indeed -- much better than just a toy!

These walkie Talkies are fun and children will gets hours of fun from them. They are a good quality product that will are sturdy and will take plently of bumps and knocks through natural play. They have a good sound quality, nice and clear. However they don't come with the batteries they require which is a pet hate of mine. If a product needs batteries , supply them with the product! This is why I am removing a star.Would make a great gift for a loved one.

These are great fun and also practical. Very nicely made, lovely owl design and most importantly of all, work well with a decent range. Some nice features such as a belt clip, little feet so the unit can stand on a flat surface and auto-turn off. Children find it easy to use and they are designed perfectly for little hands. This neat little set is a winner all round.

The kids really love these walkie talkies, the are small enough to fit in a 4 year old’s hand and also easy enough for a 4 year old to use without supervision. Basically the 4 year old absolutely loved these and were off and running within minutes. So .... easy to use, child friendly, no complicated buttons, kiddy designed, clear sound and happy, happy children.

5.8.2018

These walkie talkies are great fun for the kids to play with in and around the house and garden. They are easy to set up, easy to operate and function well. They are also good value for what is essentially a toy, but they work as well over short distances as other, more expensive brands, which are marketed as serious kit, rather than kids’ toys.

Nice set of walkie-talkies that are very simple to use when setup and with a good range (up to 3km). Voice is very clear for the receiver. Only gripe is that the instructions could have been a lot clearer and takes a lot of trial and error to get the set working. Great for getting a message through to a teenager in their bedroom.
