After a long break from Airfix kits, this is the first 1:72 aircraft I bought. I was dubious after building kits of quality such as Trumpeter and Tamiya, but seeing this on the shop shelf reduced to half price swayed me to give Airfix another go. I opened it expecting to find the same old stroy that Airfix seemed to be repeating with their 1:600 scale ships, just releasing the same standard kit with all the inherant problems they had on first issue in the '60's.But I was wrong. This is the new re-tooled Spitfire, and features a vastly imploved cockpit set up, instument panel, chair and internal cockpit wall details, panel lines that are indented and more up to date and comprehensive decal sheet, even the canopy has been improved to be more accurate. Sadly, the same awful paints are still being supplied with these kits, please, don not use them, go and buy the same colour number in Humbrol oils instead, the finish will be much better.A real improvement on the original kit that I have previously reviewed, and hopefully better in fit as I have yet to build this version. A can recommend this version of the MKIa that is distinguished by this particular box art.

I recieved this as a stocking filler and while it brought back memories of my childhood weekends I wasn't even sure I was going to assemble it as It's been a long time since I built an Airfix kit. However the quality and fit of the parts of this kit are superb, much better than those I remember from the 1970s and 80s. So good in fact many of the pieces practically hold themselves together. All in all I've spent about 6 hours over the holidays assembling quite a nice model using only the paints and adhesive included. I suppose It requires some patience (although the acrylic paints are much more immediate than the old oil based enamels) and a little care but the results and the process are very rewarding.Top marks to Airfix. There's no stand included (free to order online iirc) but you can also make the plane in a 'static' position if you prefer.I can't recommend this kit highly enough, especially as it includes everything you need for less than a tenner.Btw use some spirit vinegar to soften the decals once they've been applied; it'll let them cling to the surface detail rather than covering it up.

I used to do these as a kid, and enjoyed them then - I can't find them now - which sparked a renewed interest 20 years later, confident that my abilities would have improved. It's a lot harder than I recall, but that's not to say it actually is hard. It was simple enough to follow the instructions, and it is best to paint parts before you construct them - which can make it very time-consuming, especially as I was hoping to make my return to the modelling world a glorious example of how it should be done.I have to say, my attempt is not a showroom example, but that is not down to the model kit.Everything that should have been in there, was there, and there was ample glue and paint to complete the task.I would advise (and will do next time)that you buy an undercoating spray, as the paints can go a little thin at times, and perhaps buy a very fine brush for things like the pilot and landing gear.I will be buying another one and trying again though!

This will inevitably be very similar to another review that I've posted. I haven't built Airfix models for years, but recovering from a hip-replacement gave me an excuse to sit down and do something to pass the time. I've also built the 'partner' kit of the Hawker Hurricane, and living as close to the old RAF Warmwell (that featured heavily in The Battle of Britain) as I do, I've been able to adapt the decals to feature squadron markings that would have been seen locally on 13th July 1940! Very much enjoyed building and painting this model - some of it was a bit fiddly (1/72 scale is actually a bit too small!) but the new tooling of this model means that the detail is phenomenal.Everything fitted together remarkably well, and I'm actually very pleased with the finished model, which will eventually become part of a Warmwell diorama. The paints supplied are basic, but more than adequate and the supplied paintbrush gives a really good finish..

Having tried model building for the first time in years, I thoroughly enjoyed putting this kit together. This is a well designed and detailed kit of an early Spitfire. The tooling has been updated in the past few years, which has resulted in clean panel lines, rivit holes, minimal flashing and well fitting parts. For beginners who won't be using airbrushes, the paints are decent Humbrol acrylics which when thinned down, can be applied reasonably well. The colours seem to be well matched to the plane. The kit includes almost everything that is needed to build the kit however, you may want to ensure that you've got a craft knife and/or a nail file to clean up the edges of a parts where taken off the sprue. This is probably the best kit to start with as a beginner of the Airfix range. There are a few videos on youtube going through the build process with some goot tips. Highly reccomended.

A great kit with everything you need to complete it included at a great price. I really enjoyed putting it together and the quality of the finish is brilliant with the included decals finishing it off nicely. The packaging illustrations (Both the evocative front image and the painting instructions on the back) are a great quality and the bit of background to the Spitfire's history is an interesting addition.I would recommend going to the Airfix website page for this kit where there is a video that runs through the making of the model and gives some really good tips on the construction and painting. It definitely helped me!!This was my first Airfix kit but I will certainly be buying more, the start of a new hobby I think!

I used to enjoy Airfix kits as a nipper but was always rubbish at putting them together... I'd mentioned this in passing to her indoors who thought she'd pick me a little set up. Hooray!Turns out I'm even more rubbish now I have man-fingers. I spent 40 minutes trying to stick the inside of the cockpit together but no matter what I did I couldn't get those teeny-weeny bits to stick, so I did what any self respecting bloke would do and turned to a bottle of industrial strength superglue.Long story short, it took 10 minutes to unstick my rather large man fingers from the pilots bum (I no longer have fingerprints on two of those fingers)the dog ate the propeller and the rest of the kit is in the bin.

This is perfect as a first model. Not too difficult and stunning results. The reason I recommend this as a first Airfix model is that if you go to YouTube and search for 'Official Airfix' they've done an instructional video featuring this model which shows you all the glueing and painting techniques, together with other tips to get a superb result. You can then use these techniques on subsequent models.I'd also recommend getting the Red Arrows kit at the same time. Two iconic planes, plus you get red and white paints with the Red Arrow so you can mix them to make a light pink to paint the pilots' faces on these and all your other models.

I can think of anything better to give than someone's first airfix kit, or maybe an adult who wants to relive their childhood. It's a surprisingly detailed kit so beginners will have an easy time with the small number of parts but an expert can make this into a great model. To get the best out of the model you need a more variety of materials but a very good finish an be achieved with just paints included, the only fiddly part is the propellor which I managed to break but I think that's just me. A great gift for mature kids who have patience. I gave a similar kit to my 6 year old cousin and she had fun!

A very nice starter set, with paints, glue and brush included. I got this for a present where a limited amount of money could be spent, and this proved to be a good one. This is really aimed at the beginner, as there are only a small number of parts and does not take too long to complete and paint. After this you do no not like making up the model, you have not wasted too much. However if you like it, there are more detailed models out there that take longer to assemble and paint.Just watch the price, I paid just under 5 pounds 50 pence in November 2015, and now its almost full price again.

As a child I enjoyed building and painting the airfix model kits. Now I have a Son on my own I thought I'd try it again with him.I cannot express or accurately represent the quality time this kit gave to me with my boy. We spent hours building this kit together talking about the aircraft itself, what paints we where to use and where we put the Spitfire once we had completed it.It's a quality product that is a model and not a toy. It's also been a medium for my Son and I to enjoy quality time together. The low cost of the kit has been priceless to me and I applaud Airfix for thisSublime

My 8 year old chose this as an introduction to Airfix kits. We really enjoyed putting it together, but there were a couple of things we learnt.1. The instructions don't make it that clear that you should paint the parts as you're assembling the model.2. We managed to overlook the fact that there are detailed instructions on the back of the box for the painting.3. A sharpened matchstick was very useful for applying glue to some of the finer areas.Overall my son was delighted with it,and it was a pleasure to spend a couple of hours helping him put it together.

I bought 4 today in Home Bargains at £2.99 each. A beautiful little detailed kit, each with 4 paints, 1 glue & I brush. I'm going to build the 4 at the same time and give them away as Christmas presents. I have the 1/32 kit to compare colours to. Not many parts in these 1/72 but is a beautiful little kit with a great interior and pilot. As usual you can have the wheels down or up although you'll need a stand if wheels up. Perspex canopy either glued down or up. Good luck. Why pay high when you can shop for a bargain?

This arrived on time, and undamaged. The instructions are clear and concise, and easy to follow. The paints were good, although a couple of coats were required for one or two of the colours. The only niggle I had is that the wings did not fit the fuselage section. I had to remove at least 2-3mm per side, before it would fit properly. This was fine for me, but a beginner would have been totally lost. This is the only reason I gave it four instead of five stars, as when it's finished it does look really good.

Great fun making this model. Took 15 hours. Good to have all you need in one pack. Looks better than in my photo. As always with models of aeroplanes it's worthwhile taking a lot of time over joining the two halves of the fuselage to get it just right since that joint is long and very visible from above. Filling tiny gaps with plasticene then overpainting them works well. Also you will need a flesh-coloured paint for the pilot's fizzog; I used an old tin of Humbrol enamel for that job.
