An excellent model and the perfect way to spend a rainy Sunday. This was bought for me as a gift by my wife and as I am not known for my nimble-fingered dexterity I think it was bought more as a challenge than anything. So, having a competitive nature and a love for all things "Star Wars" I picked up the gauntlet. Before starting the model I read the reviews on here and a few on the US Amazon site as well. The information turned out to be invaluable as in preparation I purchased some small needle-nosed pliers, tweezers and a free standing magnifying glass (Amazon do them for about a fiver). I set everything up on piece of A2 paper, made sure the lighting was decent and off I went. Now,if I said that all went completely smoothly and 20 minutes later I had a perfect R2-D2 model, I would be lying. There were some mishaps along the way and I learnt from these mistakes:1) Follow the instructions very carefully. They suggest when you should flatten the pins and when you should twist them. I missed this at first and although the model is fine, there are some joints that could be tighter.2) Double-check the numbers on the pieces before removing them as some look very similar and it will save several minutes of swearing and muttering "This is stupid, it doesn't even fit!"3) Make sure you know which way you are going to bend the tabs before wiggling them backwards and forwards. I had two breakages but they were not deal breakers.4) If you are building this on a coffee table and have a large black dog with a very waggy tail, DO NOT let him come in. The only plus side is that I can safely say that the R2-D2 model in it's half completed state is surprisingly robust after a short flight across the sitting room.I spent about 6 hours on this model on Sunday and finished it on Monday evening. It was great fun to complete and I had the added bonus of proudly completing the challenge I had been set.I have been told today that there is another one on it's way to me now. I have no idea what it is but get the impression that my wife has discovered a new and reasonably priced method to keep me quiet!

I admit, I definitely underestimated the level of difficulty required to assemble this model ... is my first Metal Earth and has been an enterprise .First premise : make attention to the pieces "double" but DIFFERENT ! They have different numbers , they look the same but are actually mirror and if you tie it down in the wrong spot you will regret it bitterly ! Even the closing sequence of the pieces is VERY IMPORTANT , because if early or miss a piece ... are PAIN . Most of the little pieces are duplication. The type of metal is amazing, even along the folds and tabs is DAMN resistant and also allows you to make mistakes 1 MAX 2 times (at 3 i am afraid it will break ).I highly recommend equipping of pliers for jewelry , both those long square-toed , both laboratory tweezers with knurling ( to bend and twist the tabs ) . Personally, depending on the piece to be bent or curving , in total I used 3 different jewelry pliers , 4 lab and 1 a watchmaker 's screwdriver ( for rolling the curved pieces ) .I BELIEVE CAN NOT INSTALL THIS MODEL WITH THE ONLY HANDS ! IS UNTHINKABLE !Honestly, I did experience with simpler models or better studied the instructions , my great RD- D2 would have less strips

The Star Wars Metal Earth 3D model kit offers an interesting take on model construction, all the parts are cut into steel sheets and you have to pop them out to construct the final model. This takes a fair amount of patients, and a pair of steady hands certainly helps, but it's really good to be able to build a model without needing any glue. The included instructions are fairly clear, it's best to look over each section a couple of times before committing yourself to avoid potential mistakes. If you do make a mistake the steel is fairly forgiving and will allow you to bend it and reshaping it as long as you're not too rough with it.You'll need a pair of needle nose pliers to make assembly a lot easier than trying to manipulate the steel with your hands. This is targeted at 14+,sensible given the metal can have some sharp edges and I did manage to cut myself once during the process. It can be frustrating, and if you don't get it perfect it's likely the finished model will look a little wonky, but it's a great feeling to finally complete the build and it doesn't require any previous model making experience.

Got one of these R2-D2 model kits as a stocking filler this Christmas and decided to make it while recovering on Boxing Day.The model is very highly detailed and the way the kit fits together is very clever and well designed. Please be aware that the model is definitely not for for children to make. It says 14 years and older and I think even older teenagers would struggle with the intricacy of the folding, bending and shaping required to make the flat pieces into the final model. It took me approx 5 hours to make and I found it quite challenging, but I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process and am proud of the quality of the final model. If you suffer with a lack of dexterity then this model is definitely not for you unless you are a Jedi Master, the force would of obviously help! ; )In case it helps the tools I used included some long nose pliers to do the folding and bending and various screwdrivers with different diameter shafts to shape the cylindrical pieces.I hope this review helps! I'll add some photos so you can see the finished item, it's approx 3 inches tall

Took me a couple of hours to make and I have no model making experience. Couldn't have done it without tweezers. I broke a couple of bits but soldiered on and once it's all together it's still really sturdy with no glue required. I don't know why some of the bits have a solid line for a fold, whereas on some bits their dotted lines. It's the dotted ones that snap easily so be careful you don't keep repeatedly folding and unfolding them, or twist them too much. Used a cocktail stick for the really small bits that needed rolling and a pen for the rest. Take care when removing the bits from the sheets, especially the main head bit which is the first bit that I broke! You could make the body first to get a feel for it and then make the head. I really enjoyed making it but my fingers are now a bit sore! Will have a break before I attempt BB8. This is definitely not suitable for kids.

I purchased the R2-D2, along with a Tie Fighter, for my husband for Christmas. I thought they would make nice little stocking fillers. My husband started on the Tie Fighter first, and after lots of cursing, and him putting the part finished model to one side till he had the patience to continue.......it was finished! Having successfully finished one, he started on R2-D2. Again....there were a few choice words and mutterings about 'stupid fiddly bloody thing' but when it was finished both it and the Tie Fighter looked brilliant. I'm not so sure these types of model would be suitable for anyone under the ages of at least 14+ as they are so incredibly fiddly. They are amazing little models......note the word little, they are very small.......however, if you have the time and patience, and definitely the right tools, they really do look great when they are finished.

My boyfriend absolutely loves Star Wars. I’ve come across these a couple of times and debated whether to get them for him. One of his hobbies are model making, he loves investing a lot of time in something and constructing / painting things. Due to his love of Star Wars I thought this would be the perfect gift, and let’s be honest the metal earth models look AWESOME! I don’t regret buying this at all, once my boyfriend made it up, it looked great and he invested a fair bit of time into it, as that’s a downside to most models, they take 5 mins to make. Whereas this took him a couple of hours. If anything it’s made us want to get some shelves put up so we can buy more! The value for money is great, they look brilliant once made.

This was my first Metal Earth of anything I made. Was tricky at 1st, found a nail to make the very small cylindrical objects and a fat pen to make the body round, by starting it off rolling it out on my leg. I have seen some people say the parts are hard to get out. I used finger nail clippers (seen in pic) without them i think it would of been a pain. I found as I was building it, the arms seemed so loose, but once it was on the base I it's very sturdy.I've put a picture of him up as I think he looks very good and due to this I have now ordered 3 more, Metal Earth Darth Vader's Tie Fighter, Metal Earth Star Wars X-Wing Fighter and Metal Earth Star Wars Destroyer Droid.Lets see how they go!

Approached with some care, especially following the instructions to the letter, this is a fabulous little model. I was fortunate in having worked with etched pieces quite a lot before, but I am still very impressed with it. In case anyone has never made anything like this before, be warned that the parts do NOT "pop out" though and you need a sharp blade (pen knife would do) and something like a ceramic tile to cut on for best results. The curves can all be made around a pen or cocktail sticks and a straight metal edge like a ruler helps with bending the longest sections, there is no real need for any specialist tools. The parts fit very well and it looks the part when completed.

Amazingly accurate and detailed model. I needed a magnifying glass to assemble - about 5 hours. Younger hands and eyes would take less time. Patience and care will produce a stunning model. I have ordered the fighter and falcon in the same series. The model stands 7cm tall. It is surprisingly robust. Tweezers, small pliers & patience is all that's needed. My first kit since the 70's when I made aircraft, boats and hovercraft firstly from kits, then plans & then my own designs. Guess it needs a 'modellers background' or 'mindset'. I hope other similar models are developed. Highly recommended.

Having bought a couple of the Disney Metal Earth sets from the parks there, I knew this would be a great gift for a friend who loves to build things as well as loving Star Wars. It's safe to say that he was absolutely thrilled and is loving the challenge of putting this all together! From my own experience of Metal Earth kits, this is definitely something for older children or adults. They are very fiddly and require a lot of patience to put together taking quite a few hours to complete! I have to say though, they were a great distraction for me when I was jet lagged!

We bought this item for our son aged 11. They are very complicated! However, we knew that it targeted an older age group, but he finds even the older lego far too easy, & got this with intention of having adult assistance throughout. He definitely needed it. He loved it though. We have ordered more versions! He really concentrated on it & the whole model took him & my husband 3 hours to complete. We highly recommend the tool kits you can buy with these! It would have been near impossible without. The finished item is lovely!

Good quality and instructions need a brain and nimble fingers to follow. Ignore reviewers of these type of models complaining that they broke or were too fiddly - this is not a kiddie model and you should expect to be challenged in building it. If that sounds great as it does to me, 5 stars, if not buy something easier! When building remember that if you bend the metal the wrong way, you can bend it the other way - but - do this 3 or 4 times, and the metal will snap, so you can correct any minor bend-errors, but only once!

21.6.2016

brought as a gift for my stars wars mad boyfriend and he loved it, although he did get frustrated with it as some of the smaller parts did snap so he resorted to glue to fi this he also used tweezers to help bend the smaller parts, i wouldnt recommend this product for younger kids i would suggest its more for people who are enthusiastic about model making or enjoy tinkering with small models (my boyfriend loves taking apart and building computers so hes used to it)

These look great when done but you really need patience and some suitable craft tools. Without these you will end of with bleeding fingers. I’m not the most patient of people so got to admit a few choice words were used when building but walk away come back to it later and you do end up with a lovely little model. My advice, check and check again before building each piece as amending an error can be difficult and risk breaking the very small fragile parts
