Cheap is a word I love to hear, but it is sadly becoming the fashion not to attach it to new model kits, that is why I am really quite chuffed with this Revell 1:72 Lancaster. I have the older BIII Airfix and the new Airfix BII so here is my verdict on this one. This is way better than the old work horse Airfix BIII but I think the new Airfix BII beats it in quality. This Revell kit is nearly £4 - £8 cheaper than the new Airfix BII and I have seen the older BIII sell second hand for between £9 - £13 so a little more gets you a great kit and a little less gets you a kit nearly as good, so this Revell offering is great middle of the road buy.Just received it today and couldn't wait to get it out of the box and have a look.Disappointed I was not as the surface detail is excellent and the parts all look to be well turned out. You get some interior detail on the cockpit and rear of the cockpit but not anything massively special like you would find inside a Trumpeter, Tamiya or Eduard kit so the Photo etched colour interior set mentioned already will be a must for this one, and I have just found and bought one as I type this. I have the idea of leaving the canopy unglued so as to reveal the inner detail. If there are any after market white metal landing gear sets out there, or any made for other Lancaster's, they would not go amiss as from seeing the mouldings they look very flimsy and I can believe they would bend under the weight of the kit. The decals sheet provides two sets of markings and all the other sub markings for her, and I love the two huge roundels. The instructions do look odd, in that there are multiple ways of doing constructing parts called out, but no reference as to which marque the choices reflect? There is one place I saw a marque difference called out and that was in the choices for the canopies sliding window sections. There is a lovely bomb bay set up and ordnance is provided in the form of whole cast bombs, no "moulded in two halves and glue together to leave a seam line" routine that seems to be so time consuming with filing and sanding that I usually avoid dealing with them, cast in one piece is so much better. The clear parts are nicely done if the frame work of the canopy seems a little thin so that will be a challenge to get right. A small amount of flash was present also on a few of the clear parts but this will be cleaned up in due course and is not a huge problem. The box is the usual side opener that is still not as good as the flip front or the top opener, and is a little flimsy so no stacking this one.Overall, I'm happy with this grand old lady of the skies, good detail, good looking aircraft. I will build the old Airfix 1:72 BIII firs I think for practice, then move onto this one.

Well compared to the last Lancaster ( Airfix) that I built way back in 1959, (giving my age away a bit there) this kit absolutely oozes with detail, and 4 weeks in, it is taking me a bit longer than the few hours the first one did!. Overall the fit of the parts is excellent, and there is very little flash to clean up. How ever a few parts do let the kit down, noticeably the machine guns and the wheels, but there are aftermarket sets available to correct this. But once again my big gripe with Revell is two fold,, The end opening box, every time parts are taken out and put back in they risk being broken, do top opening boxes really cost that much more to produce ? ! .Secondly those instructions !!; From the word go there are question marks everywhere , Revell i want to build a construction kit, not do a quiz show , what is the point of giving options for different variations if you are not going to state which parts are which, does the "Grogs Shot" replica I want to build have the dome just aft of the bomb bay ?, I dont know , the same goes for what pilots seat to use. I get an awful lot of satisfaction from quietly sitting making these models, but now it seems that time is being interrupted constantly having to go on the internet to do research into what model I am building; If memory serves me well those early Airfix kit instructions were very clearly written step by step, example " Carefully cement rudder to tailplane", because of this as a nine year old it helped me no end with reading and gave my a great knowledge of the working parts of an aircraft. It seems to me that Revell put a great deal of research and effort into making these kits, and then letting it all down at the final hurdle by just slapping the instructions together without a care.Maybe that was a long rant about something that many would not worry about, but with the economic climate being what it is and model shops being evermore harder to find on the high street, more and more serious modelers will be looking on Amazon to get a good deal, and im sure that the manufactures will be taking note of what us Joe public are saying about their products. So please Revell take note, I know that i am not alone with these gripes. After all that superb kit and superb value for money.

Whilst I agree with the other reviewer saying this is the best model kit of the Lanc at this scale, I disagree with the comment that the interior is well detailed. Certainly there is some detail with seats for the pilot, navigator and radio operator along with the nav/radio table, but that's about as far as it goes. The pilot area lacks many of the controls and the pilot seat is way too far back: to reach the controls he would need 6 feet legs and four feet arms! There's no engineers seat (it folded away) and little in the way of engineers controls. The bomb aimer position lacks any controls and there's nothing in the gun turrets. The undercarriage is flimsy the legs bend under the weight of the plane and the wheels are too flat sided. The decals are a bit thick and do not fit well on to the interiors, they also do not adhere very well either and come off easily. For more authenticity I recommend adding to this kit with after sales parts such as the excellent Eduard etched and pre-painted interiors, the exterior sets would need a lot of cutting to the wings etc in order to fit them. The exterior is nicely done with reasonable recessed panel lines and the overall shape is about right. The clear parts are a little thick but not too bad except the canopy escape hatch is a little too far back. The wings dihedral is OK although some argue its slightly too little. All in all a nice model which is not too difficult for the inexperienced modeler. Remember that you will need paint and glue and this will come to more than the kit itself!

In short its got lovely detail in the componants, a choice of decals and im really enjoying putting it altogether so far.One notable issue is the angle of the wings in that they appear just a wee bit shallow. I strongly advise to do a practice run in fitting the wings to the fuselage as the interior part that houses the cockpit seats and radio and wing support etc must be bang on in the right place so do this right and you won't have any issues but if it is even just a nats ass out, the wings will have a small chunk of daylight through the fuselage where they meet the side of the plane. this is the builder error and not the product.I had to correct it so do be aware or reach for the milliput?Other than that I find it a good all round kit and would recommend no probs

This is a really good kit, particularly given the relatively low price. The level of detailing is superb, particularly the interior. As you can see, I made this as a cutaway model in order to display the detail in full. Excuse the rough edges, it was my first attempt at a cutaway! The decals included are fantastic, with stenciling and walkways as well as roundels, squadron markings etc.If I have one criticism it is the guns - they are lacking in detail and are very flimsy and easy to break off. Overall though, I am very pleased with this model, especially as it's the first time in about 25 years that I have built something of this complexity.

This new version of the famous Lancaster bomber is easily the best 1/72 plastic kit on the market. It has excellent exterior and interior detail, is superior to the Airfix, Hasegawa and especially the old Revell models; and, what's more, it's the cheapest, too.The standout feature of this kit is the interior detail, which includes seats, tables, radio bits, wheel well and fuselage walls. Turrets have reasonable detail, too.The only and unavoidable drawback as such is that most of the aftermarket sets and resin conversions were designed for the Airfix kit and may not suit this model.Highly recommended

This was purchased for my 9 year olds WWII school project. I hadn't made a plastic kit for many years, it was pretty detailed and complex but we persevered and the end result was excellent. The undercarriage is presumably to scale so is not very robust, I ended up gluing the wheels for extra stability, also you don't need to make up the two engines as they are completely enclosed in the nacelles, though we did and at least we know they are in there! Painted most of it in advance and that really helped.

I haven't bought a revel 4 a very long time (over 15 years) it would have to be a dam good model to tempt me to buy another revel. it certainly hasn't disappointed in the shit level. number of parts, sweet. detail, very nice. fitment, ferly ok. lots of dry fitting and trimming. other than that, I would recommend this particular model 4 the patient ones.

This was the first model I have done for years about 40. So I was expecting it to be a slow build. And it was. I tend to have shaky hands at times so the masking and painting of cockpitAnd turrents took a age. In truth for me the scale was to small. However once done as a first attempt I was well pleased.I will buy again but at a larger scale. :-)

Ooh - present from Santa! Cannot wait to build this, kit look excellent with loads of detail and fiddly bits! My experince of Revell is generally good so I'll looking forward to this build....I might buy the Airfix ground crew set for this one and make a diorama as I don't think my wife will let me hang this from the bedroom ceiling!!

Initially 1* as still not delivered 3 days after ETA. However, having submitted my feedback, it arrived the next day on a 24hour tracked delivery and I managed to post it out in time for Christmas after all. Product arrived well packaged and as advertised so no complaint other than the initial delivery issue.

Possibly for the more experienced modeller. Lots of parts and details to the kit. Decals look of good quality even though the kit is slightly aging. It does however have the old style instructions that revell have improved over the years.

12.5.2021

Not started this model yet but I have had a look at the kit and there are lots of tricky details which will make it a difficult model to build for a new or young modeller, I think the model will look fantastic when built and painted ??

5.9.2020

Looks nice with my bomber supply kit and RAF personnel, Main dislike they only provide dimples for fitting small parts not holes like Airfix this makes them very hard to assemble. I had to stick several parts on more than once.

1.10.2016

Good kit. Be aware that some of the pieces are small and flimsy, and it requires patience to complete. I thought the kit was better than the Airfix version, particularly the means of attaching the wings to the fuselage.
