Some computers and tablets do not have a card reader and this device allows access to files on a micro SD card for the purpose of copying, reading, updating and deleting files along with other activities like viewing files created by a car dashboard camera or other external sources. My Raspberry Pi does have an SD card socket but it is occupied by the boot micro SD. With this adapter, I can plug in an additional micro SD card which I can format to use as an alternate boot or a backup card. It is also compatible with newer laptops that use USB C ports, like Apple.I tested the device with my Raspberry Pi, a Dell laptop and an Asus desktop and it worked fine in each instance.I also tested using the USB C plug on both a laptop and desktop without issue. As soon as plugged in it was automatically recognized by Windows. With my Raspberry Pi it was recognized by Linux. This is no bigger than a regular USB drive because of the compact method in which the USB micro SD card is inserted. It actually slides directly into the USB A plug. Devices that incorporate these tiny SD cards can present a challenge when it comes to inserting and removing the cards. This adapter is user-friendly with a well-designed slider button that reliably pushes the card out so it is easy grasp and remove. There is also a hinged cover to hold the inserted card in position while transporting in pocket or bag. My only criticism is that there is no cover for the USB C plug which can, over time, easily become blocked with dust and lint. So far, working great.

Dual-Slot SD Card Reader/WriterManufacturer: StarTechAmazon price: $41.11I used to burn CDs to archive material that was out of date or that I wouldn’t need to access frequently. How 2006 is that? Over the past couple of years I have been archiving files on SD cards instead - no moving parts, large capacity, conveniently small physical size, and long shelf life. Simple SD card readers are readily available at reasonable prices. Everyone with a camera should have one on hand. The feature that impresses me is the flexibility of TWO card slots. The SD cards appear on your computer as external storage devices. You can easily drag and drop files onto either card, but here’s the cool thing: You can drag or copy files back and forth BETWEEN cards. When I am creating archives or processing photos from my camera, being able to move files any way I want simplifies my workflow. This StarTech Dual Slot reader utilizes speedy USB 3.0 and has a built-in USB-A cable. Simply flip it out and plug in it to your computer. It’s self contained and self-powered, but if you find you require extra power, there is an integrated micro-USB socket so you can plug in a phone charger or other external power source.Tech details: Cards accepted are SD (Secure Digital), SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity), SDXC (Secure Digital Extended Capacity). The reader supports SD 4.0, UHS II. UHS II will transfer files up to 312 MB/s.This card reader is powerful, fast, nicely built, and is flexible. Highly recommended.

This microSD card reader gets the job done. Very compact and convenient. I put in my 64GB microSDXC with exFAT format in it. It works on my PC and Mac with USB 3.0 ports as well as the newer MacBook with USB-C port. The microSD card goes directly inside the USB-A connector. There is a translucent flip cover to protect the connector as well as the memory card. I wish it would also come with a protective cover for the USB-C connector though. On a positive note, there is a small loop on the side with which you can attach it to a key chain or a lanyard. Very handy for such a small device. All in all, it works as advertised (tested with a 64GB microSDXC).Not sure what the maximum supported SD memory size is since it isn't documented in the package. Anyway, I really like the compact design which makes it easy to be used as a semi-permanent thumb drive. It is handy for transferring files between computers and the newer USB-C equipped laptop and mobile devices.

This is a very versatile device. It can serve as a USB drive, as a microSD card reader over full size USB, a microSD reader over USB-C, and if you have a microUSB OTG cable (and a compatible phone/tablet) it can also serve as a microSD card reader over micro-USB. You can find microUSB OTG cables for under $3, or even less per if you buy multi-packs or look for a promotion. It has no storage of its own, so you have to provide your own microSD cards. The microSD cards go inside the bottom of the full size USB port. You put the microSD card in there, gold connectors up, and gently push it inside. To take the card out, there is a little slider button on the opposite side of the port cover. The full size USB side has a cover (to protect the microSD card),but the USB-C side does not (it doesn't need it). The cover is not a slider but can rotate up to an angle of around 110 degrees (I can't find my angle measuring thing, so it's an estimate).

These days most of my gadgets have at least one USB port (with USB A, or USB C connectors) and most of the flash memory cards I use are MicroSD cards. But all of my devices that comes with a card reader are for SD cards, so I usually had to carry an adapter for these types of card to read my MicroSD cards. This adapter replaces those larger ones, while being more useful and faster. So I’m very pleased with this tiny adapter that is compatible with all of them, from my laptop to my desktops. It’s fast reading and writing, it’s compatible with all generations of MicroSD cards, and the best part about this adapter is that becomes a thumb drive with a capacity as large as the amounts of MicroSD cards one owns, compatible both with USB A, and USB C ports. An awesome card reader.

This micro SD card reader is not only affordable, it's well built and reliable. I've used it to back up photos & vids. Also to write over a wide range of cell phones and tablets. All operations went off w/out a hitch. I would definitely recommend this nifty little reader to anyone. One of the coolest features is where the card is inserted. It is inverted in to the USB A plug itself (See pictures). Not only does that allow for a small form factor overall, it's also quite stealthy. This reader can seem empty to the uninitiated. This can prove to be handy in certain situations. I should also mention that it has both USB A & Micro USB plugs, lending to it's versatility. 5☆'s ????

Pure genius! A combination USB / Micro-B adapter AND Micro-SD card reader. OK, first we need to assume that your device supports whatever you're connecting to it. Printer, etc. Just because it connects, does not mean there's a driver for it. But assuming your computer and device are compatible, you can connect your standard USB cables to a Micro-B port. As just a card reader, this tiny gadget is worth it.The area that's normally taken up by the spacer now has a thinner spacer and a card slot. There's no sprint release - instead there's a small slide that's pushed forward to nudge the card out enough to grab.

Work well for me, fast on USB3, though I note that if you're using USB3 for anything, your range for wireless keyboards and mice goes way way down...these seem to more reliably get all the bits right when burning SD cards for raspberry pi and other things like that, where every bit matters. I put this on a hub I got at amazon with switches to turn it off when not in use, so my keyboards and mice work from across the room instead of within 2 feet - that's not just this item, it's most USB3 devices that don't take extreme care in RF shielding (and this, by definition has big holes...).

I was looking for a card reader which can be used as bootable device similar to a usb pen drive. As this one is plug and play, it is detected during the boot time.I was able to boot using a microSD card with this device, without any issues at all. This device adds 2 bootable options one for MicroSD/HC and SD/SDHC/SDXC/MMC cards and other for MS/MSXC cards.Very happy with the read/write performance as well as this supports USB 3.0I no longer have to buy a USB pen drive..I find it's better to buy multiple microSD cards if needed as they can be used in most other devices.

I am a DIT for the TV/Film industry. Part of my job is to download memory cards from digital cameras and I download a lot of them. I have burned through about 5 multi card readers in the past few years. They all seem to be very poorly constructed and use the small USB 3.0 B type plug which breaks easily.I have only had this reader for a few months so I can't speak to it's long term reliability but so far so good. It seems to have a very solid construction (more than most). It also has the larger USB 3.0 B type plug that is way way more solid and less likely to break.

I bought this as a way to give myself a reachable SD card slot for an iMac, which has a ridiculous placement of the SD slot on the BACK of the display. In this case the cable on the SD card reader is just a bit too short and the device dangles off the back of the computer, which will eventually hurt the USB port. So you need USB slots nearby -- that said, on a laptop, the cable is the perfect length. I would've preferred that this device not have an inbuilt cable, but instead a usb port and a provided cable, but would allow me to use my own cable of the right length.

Quite the little gadget for being so small. It does what it says it willl do and maybe more. I'm too old to figure out what all them strings of letters in the product description are. With this, I just stick the card into the slot and plug this into a USB port. No incantations or magic wands. But just like magic, there are the pictures on my computer screen. The camera instructions tried to steer me to larger and more expensive readers. Glad I found this. Thanks Amazon ..... and the south Asian person who assembled it.

This is a product that just works. Just insert the microSD card into the regular USB plug end, then plug in to your device either using the USB plug or the USB-C end.My recommendation is this is perfect for Android phone users or Macbook users with a USB-C plug. If you don't have a device with a USB-C plug, you can still use this with a standard USB plug...and could purchase this to ensure you are future-proofed. But, you could also save your money and get a standard microSD to USB reader without the USB-C plug.

This is a very compact micro SD reader that provides excellent speeds. Of course the speeds depend on the card used but the Class 10 UHS 3 card that I used had very fast read speeds when used on a USB 3.0 port. The build quality seems good and it looks like the reader will hold up to minor abuse. The only real downside is that the price seems a bit high for a card reader. The features and quality are all very good but if the price were a bit lower this would be an excellent product.

Love it, the card fits all the way in and there is a slider on the top that slides the card out when you want it. The card gets closed in and is fully protected so easy and safe to carry around. It fits into my tiny USB c port on my tiny laptop and doesn't stuck out to much or hinder my use of this small laptop. Windows 19 sees It as another drive and I'm able to keep my documents and photos on the macroSD, use and edit as if they were on my internal hard drive. Highly recommend
