Installed in my Windows 7 Pro tower right alongside of the 3.5" floppy drive. I don't know why I just didn't take the floppy drive out and put this in instead. I can't even recall the last time I used a floppy disc. With the various memory cards hold huge amounts of data this is the portable media drive type that you want.I must admit the CF card bay insert area is super shallow as reported by the other reviewers. If you look at the second photo of this listing you can see just how shallow it is. With it being that shallow it is possible to misalign it during insertion. Of course with a little extra care you can avoid the problem but intuitively you want to just reach under the desk and insert it.So yes it is a design flaw. The rest of the drive works great. The attaching cable is not a plug into the back of the drive type, but rather a permanently attached cable that enters through a jacketed cable in the rear of the card reader. The main computer I am using these days is an HP i7 laptop that has a single combo drive in it which also takes CF cards with the proper depth so this drive works well in my setup. My Windows 7 Pro machine that houses the Star Tech 3.5" front bay card reader is always on since I use it as a Windows Media Center PC automatically recording TV shows via over the air waves antenna. So if I have some cards to read that are not readable by the card reader built into my laptop, I can just access the Win 7 machine via Windows Remote Desktop and transfer files etc. that way. I'm not bragging but rather just sharing this type of setup in the event someone else might have the same configuration.Included in the package are the mounting screws; all 4 of them. So overall it is a 5 star card reader bay but with the CF design potential for a problem I had to take one star off.

This looked like an interesting reader, so I ordered it. I find it to work well, but that it requires the motherboard to have open pins for a USB jumper. The device is very simple to use. Just put it in the 3.5 inch slot in your case (they all seem to still have this, even though 3.5 is no longer used much), and then plug it into the motherboard pins that go to a USB port. That's it - everything is powered up from there, and it works fine. The advantage of this model is that since it connects directly to the motherboard, it can pass data from two cards - it is controlling the USB. If you buy a reader that plugs into a standard USB port, then it can only read one at a time. There is one MAJOR hitch with this model - you must have open pins. Most motherboards have two blocks of USB pins, which then connect to the front panel or elsewhere (this is in addition to the ones built into the board that come out the back). I had thought when I ordered that the second set of pins should be available. Not so! On my motherboard, both were occupied, and I had the choice of disconnecting one of my USB panels, or using this. No problem, I'll just connect to my son's computer motherboard - nope, that one also uses both pins.If you really need permanent access, then it may be worth it to you. Otherwise, you may want to consider the USB 3 option (assuming you have an open USB port on the motherboard).Summary: Great stuff - but check your board to see if it will work for you. Recommended.

Good points:Comes assembled with 3.5" drive bay enclosure (mounts where your floppy drive would). Also has expansion slot bracket, so you can alternatively mount this at the back of a PC (where your PCI cards mount).Includes power connector adapter (converts IDE CDROM/Hard Drive power connector to the smaller floppy power connector which is required for power).Has Master/Slave jumper so you can set the CF card as required.Has 40 & 44 pin IDE connectors.Has DMA jumper to enable/disable DMA.Bad points:Doesn't have LED, but has 2-pin LED connector so you can connect your PC case's HD LED wires so you can see drive activity. As mentioned in another review the Ejection tab feels flimsy.I don't use the tab to eject the card - I pull it out by hand instead. In comparison to other CF>IDE adapters that I've used, this one doesn't have CF card voltage setting jumpers, although for most people this would not be required (CF card operates at 5V).Summary:It works for me. Remember that you can't use any CF>IDE adapter to hot-swap CF cards while in operation, data corruption or damage may result. Also if you're using a CF to replace a hard drive you want to avoid excessive writes to the CF card to extend the lifetime of the CF card (i.e. you don't want to put a swap file on a CF card!).

Alright folks, heres a real review...This is for the 2.0 version [check to make sure your motherboard has the proper connection for 3.0 before buying]2.0 version comes with a single 9-pin cord that plugs into your motherboard. This version is a 3.5 inch size [DOESNT fit into a 5 inch disc drive slot], so make sure you have the 3 1/2 inch cutout on your pc for this one. This is not bad at all. Construction seems solid...green light to show power, and additional red light to show you have some type of card in. Slots seem fitted, but smooth [at least on the build i got]. Read/write speed seems normal for 2.0 [15mb to 30mb per second]**One important factor though is this thing CANNOT handle multiple cards simultaneously!!!That isnt a big deal though. It CAN however, handle a usb item and a card of your choosing. For 15 bucks and a few extra for shipping. This is an obvious 2-thumbs-up for anyone that wants to add a card reader to a desktop.

This is a handy little computer add-on.Now my primary use for this is for the MicroSD and SDXC slots, so I can't speak for all the other slots so much. I did test out the USB (due to some people stating the USB slot was overly tight... and mine was as well) but thankfully, I've got enough USB ports on my system that that is not a concern of mine.I'm running Windows 10 and either it was immediately recognized or the drivers downloaded so fast I didn't know it.(Side note: it was also easily recognizable after booting up Ubuntu)The only beef I have is not with the unit... it's with my case. Sadly, my case's 3.5" slot is only 3.5" on the outside, not internally. So I'm going to have to get tray to hold it.Overall,I would recommend this little piece of hardware.(please do read other reviews though... because others have had issues with the CF Card slot)

UPDATE: The manufacture quickly responded and provided a replacement under the warranty. I finally installed the replacement last night and everything is working well. Due to their responsiveness and because the received replacement is working as expected, I'm increasing my review to 4 starts. If it starts to have issues then I'll come back an update my review.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Bought this March of last year and it will no longer read my SD cards. I've tested the cards on another computer and they work fine there. The USB port on the front still works, the lights still come on, but it won't recognize that the card is in.I've submitted an RMA request with StarTech,so I'm hoping they will honor their 2-year warranty. If so, then I'll be able to update this review.

Sure, this is a cheap unit. It's also a cheap price. So does it strike a balance? Eh.The unit did work for me. The build quality is obviously only so-so and cards won't necessarily slot in perfectly easily, but everything was recognized and I haven't had any faults. For the price, it's so-so. I'd certainly only use this as an "emergency" unit, and not for everyday work, but that's precisely what I need it for. Even even when I'm reading a lot of cards, I generally read micro-SD so I can push an SD card adapter in and only switch out the micro-SD cards, lessening the risk from the unit itself. So honestly it's more like a 3 for build quality, and a 4 for value. It's cheap, it fits your chassis,it works. But it's not solid enough for continuous or sensitive work. I'd definitely pay $5 more for better build quality.

installed card reader into a very new dell vostro and works very well, the fit is perfect and the usb socket in the reader is upside down and also fits tight, it makes a good usb port for something that is more permanent that you can keep plugged in all the time, like a camera cable, I mostly use micro sd port and it has a very good fit.I purchased this reader because reviews showed it has a better fitting port for micro sd, on other cheaper card readers that do not have good fitting micro sd ports, it will cause faster wear on micro sd cards, the poor fitting ports will kind of catch before card will insert, and damage it . this unit has perfect fit tolerances for the micro sd card port.the usb port does have a tight fit.

This was a fairly easy install on my tower computer. The provided cable was just long enough to reach from the front panel to the USB3.1 socket on my motherboard. Setup was very easy. One item that did concern me was that the device has holes in its enclosure that can allow air flow from outside the case and into the case. I was concerned that such air flow would cause dust build-up in the memory card slots, so I took the extra step to block the holes on the metal enclosure that goes inside of the computer case with black electrical tape. But now that I think about it, if you have the fans set up to provided positive pressure inside of the case using filtered air, then this dust build-up shouldn't be a problem.Oh well.

I like it...Im using this with a 4GB compact flash card, to replace the hard drive for a ZX Evo... I like that it comes with either the Bay drive or the back port installation options... Be sure, if you buy this, to ensure that your computer tower comes with a slot for 3.5 inch devices, as many only take the 5 inch device set-ups and may thus require the 5.25 inch bracket for front bay installation... I believe amazon does such a front bay adapter bracket for about $7.99...In terms of use, Im using it at the back of my ZX Evo, and it works as described, replacing the hard drive with no problems... Overall, Im very happy with it, as it means no moving parts so makes for a quieter system...

Easy to install and works great. I was thinking though and forgot my new case didn't have any external 3.5" bays, so had to order a StarTech adapter. It mounted well in their adapter with the exception of the screws being slightly too short. Just something to keep in mind. If you are mounting it in a steel bay or adapter the screws should be fine. So far I have only used it for SD and USB since that is all I use and it works great. As other reviewers have said, the power light does remain on with the computer off if your PSU is left on. This could be used to your advantage to charge devices, but may annoy some users. Overall I'm very happy and it looks good in my new computer.

This is an easy upgrade if you have an open usb slot on your motherboard and an open drive bay. It comes with screws to mount it with, and the cable attached. It needs no drivers, once installed my system running Windows 10.0 recognized it and would read various memory cards. You can save from one card to another. It has 2 led lights for access and read. The USB port on mine is snug and very useful. I had not realized that this also had a USB port; I had mainly wanted it for memory stick access.I am pleased with it, it just worked after installation and I have had no system issues or read errors. There are no covers for any of the slots, and all the ports are pretty basic.

This was a nice addition to my home computer, as I have been upgrading it to an editing station and having a way to simply pop an SDcard in without cluttering my desk is nice. Some technical know how is required here, but if you are purchasing this you probably already know that. A USB2.0 header is needed on your motherboard, so be mindful before you purchase. It includes mounting screws and a small informational pamphlet with instructions. At the moment, I have only used the SD and MicroSD slots, as I don't have any devices that run the other memory formats. Read/write speed is comparable to a desk sitting USB card reader, and being 2.0 don't expect 3.0 speeds.

StarTech.com 3.5-Inch Front Bay 22-In-1 USB 2.0 Internal Multi Media Memory Card Reader with Simultaneous Access - Black. This card reader was easy to install with 4 screws provided into my Dell XPS 420 mid tower computer. I installed it into a 3.5 drive bay and plugged it into a USB port on the mother board. My PC is running windows 10 and the card reader was up and running upon booting up my PC. I was able to test the micro SD, SD, USB, Compact Flash, ports and all of them worked well. other ports available but not tested are: Memory Stick Micro (M2), X D-Picture card, MS/MS Pro/ MS Pro Duo.I am very pleased with this reader and it is easy to use.

The StarTech.com 3.5-Inch Front Bay 22-In-1 USB 2.0 Internal Multi Media Memory Card Reader with Simultaneous Access works quite well.A few of my current memory card readers only function as "one at a time" meaning if I use one of my many SD cards along with a SD card adapter to Mini SD it doesn't work or perhaps with my not so often used CF card. The StarTech reader does seem to improve my experience of using an internal card reader in that it brings the functionality into the modern age...I can use other ports at the same time. The card reader is only USB 2.0 so we will be sitting there for a while when we do some major file transfers.
