The last time I used a Hama card reader was back in 2011 before I built a new computer and installed a 3.5" permanent multi-card reader to replace the Hama for my Compact Flash and SD cards which were the media for my cameras.Over time I have replaced three of the installed readers on the earlier and my very recent computer new build due to the pins being too close to the slot entrance on the Compact Flash reader part which allows the card to enter at a slight angle even after taking great care which resulted in the pins getting bent so a couple of days ago after yet another bent pin issue I ordered a good old Hama reader which is identical to the one I used all those years ago and it was likegoing back in time but to a much happier time. There was no worry about bending the pins like on the built in card reader as the CF card simply slotted into the Hama just in the same manner as it does in my cameras and it's worth noting that those have never ever had bent pins and it worked the instant I plugged it into the USB port. The computer running Windows 10 recognised it immediately with no issues whatsoever and after loading Photoshop I was editing the files within seconds.I have to say that having tried other portable card readers in the past, the Hama reader was the reader of choice for me personally until I installed a permanent reader into the computer, so the other day whilst looking for a portable reader, when I found that Hama readers were still available it was a no-brainer not to get another. They are absolutely brilliant and the eerie things is that they are still about the same price as they were 10 years ago.In the feedback I noticed someone had claimed that they had followed the instructions and it had wiped their files. Well what instructions does one need?Simply plug it in with the USB lead (supplied with the reader), put the card in that you want it to read and then look for the files in the OS file explorer.I've downloaded tens of thousands of images in the past with the good old Hama card reader and never once lost a file and many of the files were of weddings so I'd treat that claim with caution as it's more likely to be user-error.The bottom line is that I'm more than happy with the Hama card reader. It's a brand I knew and trusted in the past and the reason why I chose to buy it again.

The day before ordering this item I bought a card reader from a local high street computer retailer at almost twice the price. That evening I threw it away! The reason? The CF card reader slot was so shallow that it did not allow for the card to be aligned correctly prior to engaging on the pins, resulting in bent contacts and a badly damaged product!Thankfully, that problem is not evident on this reader. The pins (for this card type) are inset over 1cm from the slot face, allowing for good alignment prior to contact. The product has a 'not unattractive' blue case, and claims to be a '35 in 1' reader. I'm not sure how this claim is arrived at. as the product has 4 slots. That implies almost 10 different card formats per slot! The slots are annotated as:1) XM/SD2) SD(HC/XC)3) CF I/II MD/MStore4) MSDuo MS ProNow, maybe my basic maths is a little out, but that doesn't seem like '35 in 1' to me! However, this may be a little academic, as who actually needs to read 35 different formats? Most of us will never need to read more than maybe 3 or 4 different formats of card, and as long as your card format is in the above list this seems to do a decent job of handling it without any unnecessary fuss.I am certainly happy with the product, and can recommend it!

I've gone through a couple of budget USB 3 card readers recently that just died without warning, so I figured I'd try this old-school USB 2 Hama reader this time around; going on reviews, the older designs seem to have better longevity. The first thing I noticed about the reader is that its slots for CF and SD (the only ones I use) are deep and seemingly well-engineered. This is particularly important for CF cards, where a shallow and poorly designed slot can allow the card to be inserted or removed at a slight angle, which is a recipe for bent/broken pins. With this Hama, the cards go in straight and smooth, connecting firmly with the socket when pushed home. The reader and any loaded cards are seen immediately by Windows 10,and the files I've transferred thus far have all come across without any corruption. Obviously it would be nice to have USB 3 speeds for my faster cards, but I'll take a reliable USB 2 implementation over a fast but flaky USB 3 any day.It remains to be seen how well this will last; I'll update this review if I have any problems.

I also have the previous version of this reader bought from Amazon way back in 2003 (Hama 6 in 1 USB Memory Card Reader), it was incredibly cheap at the time and has served me extremely well over the past 6 years. I've updated to this new reader simply for the SDHC capability and I'm very pleased to report it shares a lot in common with its predecessor, not only in colour and excellent value for money. This reader is compatible with a mulitude of formats and presents your computer with 4 mass storage compatible devices, one for each card slot. It's USB 2 so with my Sandisk Extreme III SDHCs transfer speeds are a very handy 20MB/s as promised, although the reader itself advertises higher speeds (I can't test that though as my cards are rated lower than the reader). This reader simply appears to be too good to be true at the prices you can pick it up from on Amazon. I can vouch for the fact it's good, and it is true. Superb value for money so buy this one if you want a modern SDHC ready multi-reader!

I think the other reviews here summarize how good this little beauty is for the money. I wanted to add a couple of things that people might find helpful (that I couldn't see in other comments).1. Delivery was FAST! I'd built a new PC, and forgotten that the old one had compact flash slot built in, which my wifes camera uses. I needed a quick turnaround to avoid divorce, and I'm pleased to say that we're still together and enjoying looking at old photos.2. I have a Windows 8.1 build, and I can say that it was totally plug-and-play.If I were to complain about 1 thing it would be the cable size. It barely reaches from the back of the PC to the front! I don't know how much USB cable is per metre these days, but another 20-30cm and I've have given this 6 stars out of 5 by pressing on the secret star. If you look closely enough you can see it :-)Highly highly highly reccomended.

Just bought this to replace a Jessops multi-card reader because one of the slots I use regularly suddenly gave up the ghost. Extravagantly expensive at 7 quid compared to the £3.99 some reviewers have mentioned (and the quoted RRP price of £83.20 must be a joke, or a typo) but I can't grumble - it's less than half the price of my old one, seems equally sturdy and on a quick test run it read all the card sizes I have without any problem. Cards slot in nicely without wobbling. The leaflet warns you to hold the casing by the sides, rather than top and bottom, when inserting and removing cards, to prevent it flexing and damaging the contacts, but in fact the plastic housing seems pretty rigid and not at all flimsy.Time will tell if the contacts are fragile (they probably are on all readers, given the size of the pins) but this seems a perfectly good card reader to me, and good value.

This product is a reliable, cheap card reader that works like a charm. It's not as good looking as some of the other card readers out there, and the plastic case looks a little flimsy, but it's a well-tested design that works really well. In particular, the CF compartment is very deep compared to some of the other card readers out there. This means you can't easily mis-align the card during insertion and damage the pins (if you read reviews of other card readers then that's something that seems to happen with alarming regularity). My only gripe (and the reason it has 4 and not 5 stars) is that it doesn't support USB 3.0.As such it's a little on the slow side but that's a small price to pay for something that won't trash expensive CF cards!!!It would be perfect if it were USB 3.0 (hence the four stars). Other than that it's great.

I agree with others here, at this price this humble bit of kit is a bargain. It works perfectly with Ubuntu Linux (8.04) and I've tested it with an IBM Microdrive, five year old Fuji SmartMedia card, a two year old Compact Flash card and recent Class 6 SDHC cards, all were fine. What's more, a couple of largish test transfers (using a Lexar Professional 2GB CF card) demonstrated that it's nearly twice as fast as the three year old USB 2.0 card reader it was bought to replace. The translucent blue case looks rather cheap and tacky in some of the advertising images. However, the casing is quite robust feeling (no flexing or creaking from my unit)and is actually a rather smart looking dark blue (less transparent than in many of the product images). In summary, speedy, and nicer aesthetically than I was expecting :-)

I ordered this after being warned that pictures would take a long time (and camera battery power) to download from my new Fuji Camera (S5800)Well, this little gadget works superbly with the SDHC cards it uses, and even with the old style SmartMedia card from my ancient FinePix 2600, which downloads at a much higher speed than simply plugging into the camera via USB as I used to.The plastic casing on the reader is a bit cheap and easily scratched, but I can't really complain at this price! It even comes with its own short USB cable, so it's ready to go : I just plugged it into my USB port and Windows XP did the rest.I'm pleased with this little gadget, and it arrived in the post very quickly too!

Don't let the price (£3.99 at time of purchase) put you off, you'll simply not find a better value card reader than this.As with most card reader plug it in and you end up with 4 extra drive letters under My Computer (using XP or 2k). The speed of the thing tho is the most impressive, it really is quick and has no problems copying or moving hordes of photos. My two previous "usb2" card readers are dinosaurs compared with this.Huge bonus points for supporting the new SDHC cards as well. My Class 4 SDHC card works perfectly, also tried it with standard SD, MS Pro and MMC as well.Bottom line buy it, it's really quick and supports a stupid number of card formats :).

My computer (using Vista) recognised the card reader immediately so setup was minimal. Easy to use. Card reader recognised different memory cards and processed data quickly and very effectively, just as promised. However I made the mistake of removing a memory card without disconnecting the card reader or switching off the computer. The result was not only the loss of all data on the card, but it now also needs re-formatting ! A task yet to be satisfactorily completed. The instruction book does cover this point, but it is easy to overlook if you are processing a number of cards. Care is needed. Otherwise works well.

If you've never used a card reader to upload your photos before, they are invaluable. No need to connect your camera up to your PC, no drain on the battery while the files copy across, and, certainly in the case of my both my Canon D-SLR and Panasonic compact, it does the job significantly more quickly than plugging my camera in direct.USB card readers don't need to be fancy - just reliable - and this Hama product does the job quickly, efficiently and with a minimum of fuss, all for a bargain price. Simply plug and play, and off you go. There's really very little else that needs to be said!

Fast and cheap, although the R/W speed does depend on the speed of your USB3 card and if the reader gets its own USB channel or has to share with other active devices. Noticeably slower on motherboard Intel, AMD and ASMedia USB3 sockets than on modern PCIe add-on cards that use RENESAS (NEC) or VIA chips, but still faster than other UBS3 readers I have access to. Bargain. The only minor annoyance I have come across it that it occasionally turns itself to sleep after prolonged periods of non-use and will not wake up unless it is unplugged and re-inserted into the USB slot.

25.7.2008

This is an excellent card reader that works with just about any type of memory card including SDHC. The Compact Flash slot is deep enough to guide the card and ensure that the pins are aligned, which can be a problem with some readers. You may find that the supplied USB lead isn't long enough to reach the rear ports if the reader is on top of the system box, but then again laptop owners often complain that USB leads are unnecessarily long, so you can't please everyone. At this price it has a five-star recommendation.

II had one of those when they first came out. This is a much better one, but you use to get this with your computer. Now you pay more and all the extras are gone, and you have to pay more for it if it was fixed to the computer. Also beware that when you have installed a lot of apps like this on you compute. When it comes to upgrade. You will have to make sure you have a copy of your apps or. You will not be able to use them after the upgrade, and will have to get the manufactor to send you an upgrade.....Dmac.
