The day before ordering this item I bought a card reader from a local high street computer retailer at almost twice the price. That evening I threw it away! The reason? The CF card reader slot was so shallow that it did not allow for the card to be aligned correctly prior to engaging on the pins, resulting in bent contacts and a badly damaged product!Thankfully, that problem is not evident on this reader. The pins (for this card type) are inset over 1cm from the slot face, allowing for good alignment prior to contact. The product has a 'not unattractive' blue case, and claims to be a '35 in 1' reader. I'm not sure how this claim is arrived at. as the product has 4 slots. That implies almost 10 different card formats per slot! The slots are annotated as:1) XM/SD2) SD(HC/XC)3) CF I/II MD/MStore4) MSDuo MS ProNow, maybe my basic maths is a little out, but that doesn't seem like '35 in 1' to me! However, this may be a little academic, as who actually needs to read 35 different formats? Most of us will never need to read more than maybe 3 or 4 different formats of card, and as long as your card format is in the above list this seems to do a decent job of handling it without any unnecessary fuss.I am certainly happy with the product, and can recommend it!

Decided that constantly plugging the camera into the PC to download photos was a pain and long term likely to damage the camera (USB cover breaking/getting lost or camera getting knocked over etc). So needed to buy a card reader that would i) read my current card (SDHC), ii) other cards for when I upgrade my camera (Compact Flash), iii) was cheap, iv) a known make and v) not too big. This card has met all of those requirements, although I have only used SDHC cards in it.The translucent plastic and budget feel were initially a concern. Would it break after a couple of downloads or worse still destroy my cards! I did have an initial concern on first use...inserting the SDHC card I thought I had put it in the wrong slot,as unlike inserting the card in my camera, it seemed to force itself into place. However, it was the right slot, read the card, downloaded the photos and ejected the card (does not 'push' the card out, just can't be seen by the computer any more).I take photos on an almost daily basis and find it quicker and easier to use than plugging in the camera. I am also happier leaving it to download than I was when attaching the camera to the PC.I would recommend this reader.

Just bought this to replace a Jessops multi-card reader because one of the slots I use regularly suddenly gave up the ghost. Extravagantly expensive at 7 quid compared to the £3.99 some reviewers have mentioned (and the quoted RRP price of £83.20 must be a joke, or a typo) but I can't grumble - it's less than half the price of my old one, seems equally sturdy and on a quick test run it read all the card sizes I have without any problem. Cards slot in nicely without wobbling. The leaflet warns you to hold the casing by the sides, rather than top and bottom, when inserting and removing cards, to prevent it flexing and damaging the contacts, but in fact the plastic housing seems pretty rigid and not at all flimsy.Time will tell if the contacts are fragile (they probably are on all readers, given the size of the pins) but this seems a perfectly good card reader to me, and good value.

I agree with others here, at this price this humble bit of kit is a bargain. It works perfectly with Ubuntu Linux (8.04) and I've tested it with an IBM Microdrive, five year old Fuji SmartMedia card, a two year old Compact Flash card and recent Class 6 SDHC cards, all were fine. What's more, a couple of largish test transfers (using a Lexar Professional 2GB CF card) demonstrated that it's nearly twice as fast as the three year old USB 2.0 card reader it was bought to replace. The translucent blue case looks rather cheap and tacky in some of the advertising images. However, the casing is quite robust feeling (no flexing or creaking from my unit)and is actually a rather smart looking dark blue (less transparent than in many of the product images). In summary, speedy, and nicer aesthetically than I was expecting :-)

I've had this card reader for some time and I couldn't operate without it.It's surprising how many times I need to download the contents of a memory card to one PC, laptop or other device. It's also surprising how often the device in question either doesn't have a card reader or doesn't have a slot for the type of card you're using. This nifty little device solves all those issues. With such a variety of cards that it can read, I never struggle to grab the digital content I need. With it's small size and light weight, I can carry it everywhere (especially on business). Because it cost so little, it's the type of item that, if I lost or broke it, I'd buy another one immediately. And when you think that about a product, you know that it's a good one!Recommended.

Firstly, I'd just like to say that delivery was brilliant - ahead of schedule. I've never used a card reader before, so have nothing to compare with. I needed one quickly because I'd killed my mobile phone with sea water & when I got a replacement, found that the memory card from my old phone wasn't compatible with the new one but still had some photos on it, which hadn't been transferred to my computer. All-in-all it did the job as hoped. The only downside was removing the card. Because the slot isn't spring-loaded, it wasn't particularly easy. Having said that, I wasn't expecting anything super-sophisticated for the price. To sum up - fool-proof & functional for a novice if you can cope with having to dig out the card when you've finished.

I bought this card reader to replace an older model which was starting to struggle with some uprated High Capacity memory cards. It arrived from Amazon as usual, well packaged and very quickly. The unit itself is very well made and actually looks quite attractive with its dark blue tinted clear plastic case. The standard USB lead included was a bit short for my needs so I'm using a spare I had lying around but it would have done at a push. It was detected instantly by my PC which is running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. It reads every card my family use in their mobile phones and cameras without any problems. I can only recommend this neat little device. It does exactly what it should perfectly.

I ordered this after being warned that pictures would take a long time (and camera battery power) to download from my new Fuji Camera (S5800)Well, this little gadget works superbly with the SDHC cards it uses, and even with the old style SmartMedia card from my ancient FinePix 2600, which downloads at a much higher speed than simply plugging into the camera via USB as I used to.The plastic casing on the reader is a bit cheap and easily scratched, but I can't really complain at this price! It even comes with its own short USB cable, so it's ready to go : I just plugged it into my USB port and Windows XP did the rest.I'm pleased with this little gadget, and it arrived in the post very quickly too!

I had a previous card reader that costed me 25 euros and it didn't last long, so I thought "these damn things are so weak!". So when ordering this one I was afraid that for it's price it wouldnºt last long too... fortunatly I was wrong!Have this little sucker for 2 years and still is good as new! Use it mainly for my gps card to make faster updates(TOmtom internal card reader is damn slow) and for connecting to a cd player. I didn't knew but it can be used as a mp3 player! If you have a cd or dvd player with usb ports connected to your hi fi system like I have, connecting the card reader you can listen to GBs of music, depending of the size of your sd card.

If you've never used a card reader to upload your photos before, they are invaluable. No need to connect your camera up to your PC, no drain on the battery while the files copy across, and, certainly in the case of my both my Canon D-SLR and Panasonic compact, it does the job significantly more quickly than plugging my camera in direct.USB card readers don't need to be fancy - just reliable - and this Hama product does the job quickly, efficiently and with a minimum of fuss, all for a bargain price. Simply plug and play, and off you go. There's really very little else that needs to be said!

I brought this after accidentally deleting a load of photo's off my SDHC 4mB card from my Camera, The unit simply plugged in and appeared as 4 drives, and recognised the SDHC card when that was plugged in, then Using "FreeUndelete" I was able to find the deleted photo's and recover them. The unit is a nice blue, but is a little plasticy in feel, it has a bright blue light to say it's powered from the USB port. No External power required. A Great buy especially as it supports the SDHC High density cards.

This is a great little gadget if you don't have a card reader built into your computer. I have a range of different memory cards all of which are accounted for by the numerous different slots on the device. The only thing I would say is it's not the smallest of items (about the size of a Blackberry) but It has to be really to allow for all the different card types/micro drives. On the whole it does what its asked to do and it does it well so I can't fault it!!

This card reader is worth every penny. It has a solid feel to itself. Installs easy and does work right out the box. Comes with everything you'll need. It's perfect for my needs. You can't fault it, not even on the price. There may be cheaper ones on offer but I have been let down by an ebay purchase before. This time I made sure to buy a branded product. Hama is known for affordable quality.Need an external, even portable card reader - look no further!

Can't quarrel with the product or the price. However, a small note of caution. I bought it, hoping that it would work with my antiquated Win98SE o/s (it is advertised as being USB 1.1 compatible). However, it will not work with Win98SE - I subsequently confirmed this with Hama, who state it is compatible with ME onwards. The reader seems solidly built and I have no criticism of it. I've kept it for use when I get a new computer.

I basically needed a new card reader because my last one was something like 7 years old and would only work under Windows. I needed one that worked under both Windows and Linux. After asking for a recommendation in a Linux forum, I was pointed to this. When it arrived within 5 days, I was chuffed. Works straight out the box, and is more efficient than my last one. For less than £10, it's excellent.
