I think the previous reviews speak for themselves - this is an excellent card reader both for the price (still £3.99 at time of writing) and for its capabilities. Measuring about the size of a pack of cards, it has 4 slots in the front into which cards and microdrives are placed. As with a lot of electronics these days, it's made of a fairly cheap plastic but for less than a fiver that's easily forgivable. The reader doesn't come with any drivers but it does work under Vista (as you'd expect) and connects using an included short USB cable. Read and write speeds seem pretty impressive although I am yet to transfer anything of any real size so copying a 4GB file might be the real proof of the pudding.Cards push into the front and are simply pulled out to remove them - it would have been nice to have spring-loaded slots but that might have been a problem to implement given the sheer number of cards the reader can handle. Some of the slots accommodate cards of fairly different sizes so it's not entirely clear at first as to where in each slot some of the cards should be inserted, but this really is just finding fault in an otherwise great value product.Visit Hama.co.uk for a full list of the cards it can take and whether each one can be plugged without the use of an adaptor. I would detail them all here but it is quite a long list. Suffice to say, the usual suspects are all catered for (SD, mini-SD MicroSD, around 10 kinds of Memory Stick, xD) as well as a bucketful I've never heard of. If your card isn't listed, my advice would be to take a chance and buy one as I'm yet to find a card it doesn't like.

The day before ordering this item I bought a card reader from a local high street computer retailer at almost twice the price. That evening I threw it away! The reason? The CF card reader slot was so shallow that it did not allow for the card to be aligned correctly prior to engaging on the pins, resulting in bent contacts and a badly damaged product!Thankfully, that problem is not evident on this reader. The pins (for this card type) are inset over 1cm from the slot face, allowing for good alignment prior to contact. The product has a 'not unattractive' blue case, and claims to be a '35 in 1' reader. I'm not sure how this claim is arrived at. as the product has 4 slots. That implies almost 10 different card formats per slot! The slots are annotated as:1) XM/SD2) SD(HC/XC)3) CF I/II MD/MStore4) MSDuo MS ProNow, maybe my basic maths is a little out, but that doesn't seem like '35 in 1' to me! However, this may be a little academic, as who actually needs to read 35 different formats? Most of us will never need to read more than maybe 3 or 4 different formats of card, and as long as your card format is in the above list this seems to do a decent job of handling it without any unnecessary fuss.I am certainly happy with the product, and can recommend it!

I agree with others here, at this price this humble bit of kit is a bargain. It works perfectly with Ubuntu Linux (8.04) and I've tested it with an IBM Microdrive, five year old Fuji SmartMedia card, a two year old Compact Flash card and recent Class 6 SDHC cards, all were fine. What's more, a couple of largish test transfers (using a Lexar Professional 2GB CF card) demonstrated that it's nearly twice as fast as the three year old USB 2.0 card reader it was bought to replace. The translucent blue case looks rather cheap and tacky in some of the advertising images. However, the casing is quite robust feeling (no flexing or creaking from my unit)and is actually a rather smart looking dark blue (less transparent than in many of the product images). In summary, speedy, and nicer aesthetically than I was expecting :-)

I ordered this after being warned that pictures would take a long time (and camera battery power) to download from my new Fuji Camera (S5800)Well, this little gadget works superbly with the SDHC cards it uses, and even with the old style SmartMedia card from my ancient FinePix 2600, which downloads at a much higher speed than simply plugging into the camera via USB as I used to.The plastic casing on the reader is a bit cheap and easily scratched, but I can't really complain at this price! It even comes with its own short USB cable, so it's ready to go : I just plugged it into my USB port and Windows XP did the rest.I'm pleased with this little gadget, and it arrived in the post very quickly too!

Don't let the price (£3.99 at time of purchase) put you off, you'll simply not find a better value card reader than this.As with most card reader plug it in and you end up with 4 extra drive letters under My Computer (using XP or 2k). The speed of the thing tho is the most impressive, it really is quick and has no problems copying or moving hordes of photos. My two previous "usb2" card readers are dinosaurs compared with this.Huge bonus points for supporting the new SDHC cards as well. My Class 4 SDHC card works perfectly, also tried it with standard SD, MS Pro and MMC as well.Bottom line buy it, it's really quick and supports a stupid number of card formats :).

My computer (using Vista) recognised the card reader immediately so setup was minimal. Easy to use. Card reader recognised different memory cards and processed data quickly and very effectively, just as promised. However I made the mistake of removing a memory card without disconnecting the card reader or switching off the computer. The result was not only the loss of all data on the card, but it now also needs re-formatting ! A task yet to be satisfactorily completed. The instruction book does cover this point, but it is easy to overlook if you are processing a number of cards. Care is needed. Otherwise works well.

Bought this for Compact Flash cards with a laptop running Windows Vista. Absolutely perfect, worked first time. The case is perhaps a little fragile if not looked after but what can you expect for the price, and it's better than I thought it would be. Comes with a 0.5mt USB to mini-USB lead so ready to go. Naturally with the numerous pins that CF cards have you have to be relatively careful when inserting and removing.Nice and small, doesn't take up much room. I purchased so as to save battery life when uploading from a DSLR camera, and was happy that it is from a well-known name in photographics.Recommended.

If you've never used a card reader to upload your photos before, they are invaluable. No need to connect your camera up to your PC, no drain on the battery while the files copy across, and, certainly in the case of my both my Canon D-SLR and Panasonic compact, it does the job significantly more quickly than plugging my camera in direct.USB card readers don't need to be fancy - just reliable - and this Hama product does the job quickly, efficiently and with a minimum of fuss, all for a bargain price. Simply plug and play, and off you go. There's really very little else that needs to be said!

This is an excellent card reader that works with just about any type of memory card including SDHC. The Compact Flash slot is deep enough to guide the card and ensure that the pins are aligned, which can be a problem with some readers. You may find that the supplied USB lead isn't long enough to reach the rear ports if the reader is on top of the system box, but then again laptop owners often complain that USB leads are unnecessarily long, so you can't please everyone. At this price it has a five-star recommendation.

This card reader is worth every penny. It has a solid feel to itself. Installs easy and does work right out the box. Comes with everything you'll need. It's perfect for my needs. You can't fault it, not even on the price. There may be cheaper ones on offer but I have been let down by an ebay purchase before. This time I made sure to buy a branded product. Hama is known for affordable quality.Need an external, even portable card reader - look no further!

Can't quarrel with the product or the price. However, a small note of caution. I bought it, hoping that it would work with my antiquated Win98SE o/s (it is advertised as being USB 1.1 compatible). However, it will not work with Win98SE - I subsequently confirmed this with Hama, who state it is compatible with ME onwards. The reader seems solidly built and I have no criticism of it. I've kept it for use when I get a new computer.

This little card reader is very simple and works fine, just plug it in and it does what it's supposed to. I've used it for about a month so far without any problems. It auto installed in seconds (without any additional drivers) on my laptop (Windows XP) and on my desktop (Windows Vista). It's read / writes to all the cards I've inserted and seems quite fast although I haven't measured any read/write speeds. Excellent value.

I posted earlier giving this one star because it didn't work at all. The replacement was sent very quickly, works perfectly and is just what I wanted, so I've edited the review to 4 stars. If it had worked first time round it still might not have been 5 since it's a little bit more complicated to install than they claim, but I managed it and I'm certainly not geeky. Once up and running, it's very easy to use.

I basically needed a new card reader because my last one was something like 7 years old and would only work under Windows. I needed one that worked under both Windows and Linux. After asking for a recommendation in a Linux forum, I was pointed to this. When it arrived within 5 days, I was chuffed. Works straight out the box, and is more efficient than my last one. For less than £10, it's excellent.

Fantastic card reader both lookwise and performance. Says what it does. With pocket size and at this cheap price you can't get a card reader cheaper than this. The external case is thick and has got blue indicator light which glows when connected or while on operation. Got slots for most of the memory card types. The transfer rate is also fine with USB2.0 speed. This is the cheap and best reader.
