I wanted a planer for planing the door edges and door frames of our garage doors.I needed a planer that had the blade able to reach into corners, but also wasn't going to break the bank in cost... as this was possibly a one off job.Welcome to the Stanley RB5 planer! The Good:---------------------• The RB5 has an all metal alloy body. The only part that isn't metal is the yellow heel area [Unlike another reviewers comments, there is no other part that is plastic and there is no plastic screwing onto steel!]• Versatile planer with dual blade locations (front or centre) allows you to reach into corners or used as a traditional block planer.• Yellow heel area is removable and houses a small canistercompartment for storing blades when not in use.• 2 blades included (50mm width).• The tightening screw is big enough for 'coin' use (max 2p coin thickness).• Compact for one handed use.• At under £15, not overly expensive. The Not So Good:---------------------• Unlike the advertised picture, you only get 1 steel blade guide.• This is the 'new' RB5 model with extra space around the rear screw area - which is better than the the advertised original model ...BUT the adjusting screw on the top of the blade guide still needs to be more gnarled/textured. As it stands, it's too smooth and difficult to tighten/loosen (especially when the blade is being used in this rear location).• Takes a bit of patience to get the blade accurately aligned.• Not easy to use on tougher jobs - Sometimes you need two hands to steady it when planing and due to its compact size, this isn't really achievable.Conclusion:---------------------If I had the choice, I would get an electric planer! (hmm.. or hire a carpenter?)Realistically, a traditional 2-handed planer is far more sturdier and controllable, the RB5 is not very sturdy due to its small size. However, this is one of the very few planers on the market that has a 50mm wide planing edge AND with a front blade mount that allows for planing right into a corner. Actually, in this price range, this RB5 maybe your only option - it was the only option I came across! - If you're in the same boat, save yourself the hassle - stop searching. These planes are amazing. This is my second one and I love it. It is always sharp. The blae extends to each edge of the plane so you can plane wood along an edge right up to the edge. Also you can move the balde to the front of the plan to make it a "bull nose" plane and plane ritgh up to an edge. I built a Solo saling dinghy from plans - no kit and this plane (my first one) was one of the most used tools. I hope Stanley keep making it. I have since compared my old plane with the new one and I now see that they have changed the shape and the old shape is better – more comfortable to use. The new plane is still good and worth buying, but the older one I have is better.

Reaches the parts no other plane can reach. There is a mounting for a blade right at the front of the plane, so it can be used along the grain right into the corners of an assembly such as a window, window sill, etc. The middle position for the blade allows setting the blade right at the edge of the carrier (or even slightly past the edge) which allows planing along an internal corner. The quality of the product is is poor, and is hard to adjust so I would not recommend this as a general purpose plane, but I have found no alternative to it when it comes to tight corners.

This plane seemed to be out of production so I was well pleased to find it on Amazon. In use it is great, blades really sharp and very comfortable to hold & use. A little bit fiddly to set though, as when you loosen the retaining screw the blade can drop out! The trick is to keep the screw just nipping the blade & adjust by minute amounts & check cut each time. That aside it's a great little plane & ideal for getting into a corners, and at a very good price.

This small Stanley Block plane is a little fiddly to set up correctly, but once done, it soon becomes obvious it's an indispensable bit of kit for planing right up to an internal 90deg. corner using the front blade mount on the plane, ideal on window frames, door battens, indeed on any narrow soft or hard wood area of a frame or cabinet, ideal for planing small narrow areas.Strongly recommended for the DIY woodworker and cabinet maker.

Bought to replace my very old one. Picture deceiving as only one adjustable blade guide is provided unlike my old one which had two. Not really a problem as you only use one blade at a time and the blade guide can be moved to the front position.

Great these are still available. Easy to use and replaceable blades, of different shape, so no tedious sharpening - I do wish they would bring back the longer 'Paramo' replaceable blade plane though!!!

I am very pleased with this tool. It arrived promptly and has been used most weeks since. The removeable blades always ensure a sharp cutting edge which ensures a more professional finish.

Ideal for small fine jobs with limited access. Cutting depth adjustment a little fiddly but it does the job intended. Not suitable in place of a smoothing plane or a jack plane however.

Great little plane, obviously does not do the same job as a larger plane, but ideal for corners, and smaller locations

I bought this as gift and the person is more than pleased with it, it is light and so easy to use.
