I was given one of these by Ian McFestool round the corner who didn't want it because there was nowhere to put batteries in it.It was in a sorry state, cosmetically, so I stripped it down, scrubbed it all in Fairy liquid, dried it thoroughly and started to de-rust it, doing the usual tune-up thing with abrasive paper laid on a sheet of glass to flatten the sole and the sides. The rust hadn't really bitten in to it very far, and five nights of sitting pretending to watch TV while rubbing away on the abrasive had the cast iron looking pristine. The slight hollow in the sole had all but gone and had completely gone where it mattered. There were no cracks or flaws anywhere.A session with Brasso had it gleaming; not quite a mirror finish but certainly a good, polished lap.More fettling on the frog and all the bits above the waterline had it looking quite decent and of course I spent another couple of nights watching TV while working on the iron and chip-breaker, lapping them so they could get into interference-fit vacuumy contact.All very tedious but all part of becoming one with the instrument, Grasshopper.Threw it all back together and played with it on Ye Olde Woode.Moment of enlightenment:There is nothing quite as satisfying and uplifting as using a GOOD handplane, smoothing wood on a solid bench. I would have laughed at this, years ago, until I experienced it. The plane sings, and surfs along peeling off one long transparent ribbon of woodshaving from the workpiece like a length of mutant-flat onion-skin.This can only be done with a well set-up plane, and the setting-up can only be done on a properly-tuned plane.Now – If the plane had looked to be in good order, would I have spent long hours making my sole bright and true?Probably not; and I would have missed-out on owning a fantastic tool.I did it because it looked knackered but I've learned that any plane, straight out of the maker's box, is just in need of the same refurbishing and tuning as an obviously neglected old one. As it comes, a plane is just a manufacturer's blank awaiting tuning. There ARE exceptions, of course and some manufacturers do all the tv watching and honing for you but you'll pay a hefty premium price and you'll never "know" your tool in the same way as someone who's poured themselves into flattening their own.The Stanley Jack plane may not be "finished" as it comes out of the box and most of them that are sold probably remain in this unfinished state forever but it still has the makings of a first class tool for anyone willing to put a little time into it.

I bought this as a previously used item. It turned out to be brand new but only the box was a bit bashed up.i was a very happy customer that day and remain so.

Ordering and delivery were fine. Usual Stanley product - not especially cheap, but get the job done.

Finally I can make almost transparent shavings. It requires some tuneup, but it's well worth it

Took a little bit of setting up as all planes do but once done very happy with the results.
