SUMMARYA great budget micrometer that suited my needs fine. I usually use a set of digital calipers for most of my measurements involved in handloading ammunition for target shooting, however, in one instance I needed something which had more precision than the set of calipers I had. Hence the purchase of this micrometer. It performed great and would recommend to anyone looking for a good budget micrometer.WHATS IN THE BOX- Cardboard sleeve- Plastic box- Micrometer- Double sided tool for zero-ing- (No instructions, so best to read up on Wikipedia if you're unsure how to use them)REVIEWThe micrometer has all the typical features that you would expect on any old micrometer; easy to read scale, knurled thimble, ratchet for error free measurement* and lock nut.*Well, at least takes the human element out of it by applying the same compression on a surfaceTEST RESULTSI needed a device that would measure the external diameter of the neck of a loaded bullet, and from this dimension I can then work out how much I need to size my brass casing (to maintain neck tension) so it was critical that I have an accurate, precise measurement. Using some high quality brass cases (Lapua) I had loaded up 10 rounds also using high quality Lapua bullets. These high quality components have very repeatable measurements and should therefore provide a good test for the micrometer. Results as follows:7.37mm, 7.39mm, 7.37mm, 7.38mm, 7.38mm,7.38mm, 7.37mm, 7.37mm, 7.37mm, 7.38mmRange: 7.37mm - 7.39mm = 0.02mm (0.2902"-0.2909"=0.0007")For me, the accuracy was only required to three decimal places in inches (i.e. 0.290) but I am more than impressed with the results. I re-measured another 10 loaded rounds and found that a measurement of 7.39mm appeared only once so I'd be happy to say that this is more down to the brass thickness for that particular case, and not the tolerance of the micrometer. The reason for this measurement was that I didn't known which part I should order to re-size the brass to give neck tension; 0.288" or 0.289", which is the reason I wanted something so accurate for measurement. This device provided that level of accuracy needed and I am most pleased with it.I have received the re-sizing part, 0.288", and once I've fired those bullets and re-size them I will re-measure some cases as they should all have an outside neck diameter of precisely 0.288". Will update this review accordingly!

I still refuse to believe that this thing cost only a couple of pounds delivered. Has to be the measurement tool bargain of the century!QUALITY:According to the other reviews the quality may vary, but I must have been lucky and got a good sample. Overall finish is perfect, spindle has no wobble, thimble turns very lightly and smoothly (as long as the spindle lock is fully released... I'm still learning!), and rachet stop works perfectly. Free tip: Check wikipedia for great explanation of micrometer parts.ACCURACY:I needed this micrometer for a valve clearance job on my car, to measure the exact thicknesses of valve shims. The measurement range will be small, 4.25mm is the thickest shim available.I tested the accuracy by measuring thicknesses of single feeler gauge blades, or combinations of blades. All single blade (0.05mm to 1.00mm) measurements were accurate, micrometer showing +0.002mm to +0.003mm per blade, which I find a very good result for a micrometer costing well under 10 pounds. When measuring thicknesses of several blades together, the rachet stopped a bit too early, giving too high a reading. I presume this is more of an issue with me measuring several blades together rather than with the micrometer. This cannot really be avoided as the blades would need to sit completely flush with each other for the measurement to be accurate. When tightened a bit further with the thimble until tightness was about right (no gaps between blades and started feeling a bit more resistance), the reading was again off by just a couple of thousandths of mm.All in all, knowing that the micrometer reading is a tiny fraction too high but tne amount is constant, I can adjust my readings to get the exact thicknesses of shims down to just 0.001mm to 0.002mm - in other words, this super cheap micrometer will do its job nicely!ACCESSORIES:The micrometer came inside a plastic box. It will protect it from elements, but it only has some very thin padding inside. It could have had a bit more padding to stop the micrometer from moving. Also included was a calibration tool. There was no manual included. A small A4 size manual with descriptions of micrometer parts and how to use it, calibrate it and take care of it would have been nice. Luckily, there's internet.PRICE AND DELIVERY:What can I say. Seven quid with free next day delivery with Amazon Prime.

Bought this partly for hobby use, and partly to teach my kids how to use a micrometer (the other one I have is Imperial, and was my father's).For the price - £8.50, you get a very decent micrometer. it works smoothly, and the finish is very good. It isn't Moore & Wright, there are 3 tiny niggles that most users won't even notice... The measuring 'feel' is a little bit 'mushy', compared with my much older M&W micrometer, not sure why. It's the final touch to tighten that is less defined on the new one, although using the ratchet, the reading is repeatable time after time. Also, I took some time using a ceramic polishing stone to deburr/soften the edges of both anvils, to prevent scratching of the work piece. They were not badly finished, just could have been micro-bevelled.Last niggle - the locking lever is a flimsy plastic item, which moves the screw at its centre. The lever wobbles on the screw, but this does not prevent it locking (just shows the economy in construction). In all... Very good value for money and a usable tool... If you're a perfectionist, you will find a couple of areas to improve, but for less than a tenner....

I used this micrometer to measure very thin drill bits that had become mixed up, the thinnest being 0.3mm. It did require calibrating out of the box but it does includes instructions to do so and you can search on YouTube for instructional videos. Once calibrated it worked perfectly!Tip: the top lines represent 1mm, the bottom lines represent *.5mm and rotating gives you .05mm increments. So for example a 1.85mm drill bit gets measure like this; 1mm (Top) + .5mm (Bottom) + .35and (Rotation).

I realised that I needed a micrometer to buy some replacement coated wire for use in modelling, and it did the job extremely well, on some very fine wire. But the next day I was posting a fairly thick letter. Did I need to send it large letter rate - out came this handy little gauge, and I had the answer. If you want one, just buy it. It's nicely presented, and comes with a tool to enable you to make any fine adjustments that might be needed.

Never used a micrometer before, so treat my review with caution. However as a micrometer newbie this device looks like remarkable value to me and for the occasional non-professional use appears to be ideal for DIY, Hobbies etc., when accurate dimensions are required. I found it intuitive and easy to use after looking up a video tutorial, and appears to me to be well engineered. Accurate dimensions for small parts. Recommended.

I've been trying to gauge the thickness/diameter of things for years using a ruler, however when it came to measuring the diameter of pearls I had to give up using the ruler, so bought this Micrometer. Coming from an engineering background and having used one in the past it was an easy instrument to use. Definitely a good buy! Although I didn't need any instructions it doesn't come with any, hence only 4 stars.

The cost of replacing my mercedes front brake discs in a garage is £300. I can now measure the discs and plan to change them when the minimum thickness is reached, by measuring with the micrometer. Discs cost £100, and garage labour is £200, and the job is very simple for a practical person to do. No more MOT failures for me as I can plan the work prior to the MOT. Saving £200, and the cost of a re-MOT.

Solid little tool at the low price, entry level end of micrometers. Measured against a certified control block, it's well within tolerance to me; especially as there is no calibration certificate, with an error margin that's good enough at this price. If this was a professionally calibrated Mitutoyo I would expect more, but this is a budget friendly micrometer.

Just received this and have to say I’m quite impressed with the quality and at a great price, don’t know how they do it for the money.I have experience using the likes of Moore and Wright,Starrett and other quality products and was expecting something far inferior which isn’t the case.It says register for a lifetime guarantee,it just gets better.A great buy.

The micrometer arrived in a factory sealed packet within a cheap but functional plastic case. It turned smoothly, but needed zeroing - a straight forward matter with the tool provided. Measurement of (new Draper) feeler gauges revealed slightly high readings (typically +0.02mm for a 0.8mm gauge), which should be plenty acceptable for most household purposes.

It's a basic micrometer. I bought it to check the condition of the disc brakes on my car, it did this job with ease.It had been packed with a lot of grease around its mechanism, and this grease had splurged all over the device when I opened it for the first time. I cleaned the grease off with a piece of kitchen paper, and now it is fine.

Good little tool for the money. If you're an engineer, then buy something better. If youre like me and want something to occasionally check disc brake wear, this ideal. Does what it says on tin. Fast delivery too.5stars is based on the amont paid. If ihad paid 10 times as much i would be ranting. . .Pays yer munnee, take yer choice.

Bought this for various watchmaking projects and it's proved absolutely perfect. The degree of precision is remarkable for such a low price. Read the instructions properly to avoid turning the wrong part of the ratchet- it's easy to miss the fact that you're not supposed to turn the main handle but the small knob instead.
