We live in a high radon area, but everyone in this location is pretty laid back and laughs about radon as a serious health risk.I don't know why I spontaneously 'decided' to be concerned about radon one day, but I did. A spot of searching on Amazon and I came up with this product on sale and bought it to set my mind at rest. I thought we'd probably have ok readings and could then pass it onto other members of the extended family to use and test their levels...Well, imagine the shock when the device came back with 280 as our first reading....That was almost a year ago now. We immediately started living with all the double-glazing windows on the latch and racked up a huge heating bill last year whilst we figured out what to do.There are no radon specialists here and no one seems to know anything... We have done a lot of googling. We installed a positive ventilation unit in the attic (£800), which takes air from the attic and circulates it into the house. We were stumped when our levels didn't drop at all. Then I had the brainwave of putting this device in the attic, to measure radon levels there. We discovered they were as high or higher in the attic, as they were in the rest of the house!!!!! So we were just moving radon from the attic into the rest of the house. We took out that PIV unit and we installed another one (£1K) which takes air from outside, heats it slightly and puts THAT into the house. I can't quite bring myself to close the windows to check if it's working yet...Meanwhile, we took out all the ventilation bricks around our bungalow, only to discover they all hit walls - so there is almost no air circulation under our house - no wonder we have radon. We are now drilling through the walls in numerous places to install more vents...Anyway - long story - but without this little device we'd never have known what we needed to do. After trying something, we can test again and keep seeing what is working... We can see levels go up and down according to wind levels, rain etc. TOTALLY WORTH IT.The only thing is: I don't want to lend ours to extended family now, so might just buy my sister one for Xmas...

I purchased this after an uncle passed away due to lung cancer. Radon the likely culprit as his house was tested to have over double the limit for carrying out radon mitigation. While I live in what's considered a very low radon risk area, my main concern was with occasionally using well water for a 450 litre fish tank in our house.I first purchased a different brand of Radon monitor but didn't feel confident with its readings after several weeks of use. The average kept settling at 29 Bq/M3, even when I left it in my car (parked outside) for a week. So I decided to purchase this more reputable brand here, knowing that I could return it if it kept giving a similar reading. To my surprise, this gave a reading over 160 Bq/M3 and went over 200 on the second day! This was quite a shock as not only was I getting a potentially harmful reading, I had not used any well water in several months. With weekly water changes using water from a water butt, any radon that may have come in with well water would have been long dissipated.Over the following weeks, the radon readings fluctuated quite a lot and thankfully the average stayed well below 200. I filled out the Airthing’s Radon Self Inspection Report after 3 months of monitoring my bedroom and got an estimated annual average of 137 Bq/M3.Windy days usually leads to the lowest daily readings. Frosty calm weather particularly when we've the fire lit leads to the highest readings such as over 300 this morning. When it goes over 200, I open the windows for a while and that usually gets the 1-day reading back below 200 by the end of the day.Despite the high cost, this is certainly well worth it in the long run as we can continuously monitor the radon level. It's also quite surprising how much the weekly readings very from house to house. For example, my brother who lives next door borrowed this and his bedroom was giving around 1/5th the readings of ours.

I purchased this instrument to "verify" that my radon fan was still doing the job. I was alarmed when I got over 800 Bq/m3 after the first day. I thought that there was something wrong with the instrument. Subsequent readings in different rooms were also high over the next few days.It turned out that, while the radon fan was operating, the pipework from the radon sump under the house had accumulated water because it was not installed correctly, so the fan was not creating enough suction.I reversed the fan to blow air in rather than extract, and this cleared enough water to create positive pressure under the floor slab. This technique also works well for radon reduction and so I did not have to install a new sump, which would be costly. The instrument started delivering low radon levels after a couple of days, well below 100.Do NOT assume that your radon fan is working just because you have one installed. This instrument is a must-have for any home with significant radon levels or for anyone who wants to get quick results.Test your radon levels every 2-3 years or purchase one of these irrespective of whether you already have mitigation measures in place. Wish I had bought it sooner, but better late than never.Highly recommended. Thank you!

Bought this on a Lightning deal as we live in a high Radon area and it has been well worth it. Showed that indeed the Radon levels were higher than expected but fortunately not unduly so. Simplicity to use, although you do need to wait for a few days for the results to become accurate. I have a small collection of radium dial clocks which are normally stored inside sealed bags. After opening them the level jumped dramatically as the Radon was released.Radon is heavier than air, so best results are from floor level measuring. Highly recommended and my wife even borrowed it for a couple of weeks to check the basement at her workplace which has a permanent Radon monitoring system. The device was within 1% of the Pro monitoring system. For the price, it was an absolute steal at full price it's only a bargain...

I bought this as I live in a high radon area and would like to monitor the levels. I am also doing the official radon test as this doesn’t replace that, but it does give me an indication as to whether or not I need to ventilate the house. If I’ve been away for a few days and there’s no air circulation the levels increase, once I’m home and have the windows open (particularly in my bedroom!) the levels drop down to barely anything. Hopefully it’s in line with the official test but either way it does provide me with instant information as to whether or not the radon levels are building up in the house and need to be released, which is never a bad thing!

Very good machine and easy to use, once you know how! the printed user manual is not the best and so go to http://www.corentium.com/uk/canary/ for all the FAQ's and better detail. If you are not sure about the trigger levels and need a radon map go to RadonUK first. The good thing about this device is that you can get a quick appraisal (in one day) and then move onto the next room to target the highest reading. Then take your longer term readings all as set out in the website FAQ's. Only reason I gave 4 stars is because the manual lacks detail and you have to go to their web site for the right info.

Great little device if you need/want to measure radon levels.I used them to check the levels in my new house as it was in a area marked as high chance of levels above safe. Luckily the readings came out below the action level, but we'll keep them going to continually check the levels as they can change over time.I ordered a few of there and initially put them all together and check the accuracy of the readings. There was a bit of a range between the readings, but not too far out that I had confidence that the readings were accurate enough.

Display shows very useful data (3 relevant values at any one time, including toggling of one of the display fields). Extremely useful for experimenting in different rooms and with different ventilation scenarios over short time periods (although with the obvious trade-off of accuracy against elapsed time - inverse square relation). Instruction manual outstandingly clearly and precisely written. In short, a superb investment for anyone living in a 'radon area' who would prefer to reduce the probability of contracting lung cancer.

This gizmo does the job and can produce accurate results in 24 hours, and even more accurate ones in a week, as opposed to the three months required by a passive absorption detector. I have tested it against another commercial detector and the results were similar. The unit appears to be well-made. As I've only had it for a few weeks I cannot comment on reliability, but it makes short-term radon level measurement a reality. It is reassuring that the same company sells commercial-grade detectors costing ten times as much.

Does what it says and gives regular feedback. Some days it is above 100 which can be alarming compared to some days much lower. As another reviewer said you can sort of see trends. It seems Higher after a lot of rain. Assume that causes Radon to be pushed out of ground? I know we have to wait for a good average reading before moving and checking another area. Going into winter will be able to see if it changes much with windows/ vents closed. Only think i would say is it could do with a stand!

I bought this because the area into which I was moving had been designated as high radon, and I was particularly concerned for my young granddaughter when she visits. Well, if this gizmo is accurate, after measuring for a month, I no longer am worried about living here. It is clear and easy to understand and I am greatly relieved by the results obtained. Also, apparently, the batteries are good for up to two years. It is made in Norway. I don't know why that should reassure me, but it does!

Just take it out the box read the very basic instructions and sit back and relax! We recently moved to a radon area in the North East and it really gave us the assurance that we had lower level than needed attention (sub 100) we move it to new locations on a monthly basis to check each area of the house... loads cheaper in the long run and really gives piece of mind... would happily buy again but don’t need to as mine’s still working perfectly! ?

Purchased to measure radon in an old 1890 house we bought. Works great and simple to read. The house was pretty much sealed up prior 4 months so levels were above 200 at first, but we’ve been airing the house out and levels are down to a more manageable 130, need to core some vents into the thick walls and look at options to get it below 100. Glad we purchased this as can see accurate measurements of radon quickly.

It took around three days before this meter finally finished calibrating, during which time we had decided to exchange it.However now it actually is giving readings it is excellent. You get current and 7-day average readings. We keep it in one room most of the time but it is small enough to pop in a pocket or bag and take out with you.We have done this just so we can compare our readings with other locations.

have not done an official licensed test on house , but this unit indicated a large problem . after placing a radon blower under house and using this unit , levels shown to drop to very safe values. give it 12 hours to get a reading and after a day you will see the snapshot room level . great for seeing if your blower / sucker is working if you do not have live fan alarm , but it takes a day to read a level .
