In the early 1990's Auerbach et al compared double to single breast pumping using four different pumping regimes (5-minute single, 5-minute double, unlimited single and unlimited double) in mothers of full term babies. The greatest amount of milk was collected when double pumping was allowed to continue until milk was no longer entering the collection chamber (unlimited double pumping). Another important outcome was that by a margin of 3:1, mothers preferred the double pump system, even those that achieved more milk with single pumping.Brand new research has revisited this question. Prime et al investigated mothers of full term babies pumping their milk with an electric breastpump for 15 minutes on two occasions. On one day mothers would double pump, and on the other single pump. Compared to single pumping, double pumping yielded greater milk volumes and resulted in increased breast drainage (Increased percentage of available milk removed). In addition, double pumping also yielded milk with higher energy content. This study builds nicely upon previous research of Jones et al who also found an increase in milk energy content during double pumping.Increased Number of Milk Ejection Reflexes (MERs)The neurohormonal milk ejection reflex, with the key hormone oxytocin, is crucial for milk removal and maintenance of lactation. Milk flows from the breast during a milk ejection reflex (MER). MERs are described as short discrete uncoordinated increases in intraductal pressure, milk duct diameter and milk flow rate. They occur in both breasts at the same time, and mothers can have varying numbers of MERs during breastfeeding/breast pumping with a range of 1-17. During breast pumping, recent research has shown that mothers have one of four patterns of MER. These patterns are differentiated by both the number and shape of MERs during milk removal. This explains why milk removal varies between mothers, some mothers will remove milk quickly while others will need a bit more time. Interesting, if you follow the same mother over time, she will continue to have the same pattern of MER or milk release all the way out to 9-months of lactation.When milk ejection reflexes were measured during double and single pumping by Prime et al, it became clear why double pumping yielded more milk volume and drained the breast better - double pumping actually stimulates an extra milk ejection reflex!Higher Levels of ProlactinProlactin is the hormone responsible for milk production and Zinaman et al in the early 1990's studied the prolactin responses to infant sucking, hand expression and different types of breast pumps. Each method resulted in a different prolactin response. During double pumping with an electric breastpump, higher prolactin levels were produced. It's taken a while to be able to offer review comments on this, as I requested it when my sister-in-law was still expecting, and it took a little while after my youngest nephew's arrival before she was able to express with the pump. Now that she can, she's very impressed with how easy, effective and comfortable this is.The baby's only just over a month old (he arrived late - had to be induced - and was just shy of 10lb at birth), already a bit of a beast at 12lb and is constantly hungry. Using this twin pump system, my SIL is able to express a full bottle in just a couple of minutes - allowing her to take some of the strain off the little un's ravaging, to potentially share some of the overnight feeding,

I knew before even trying this that it would be a perfect product! Avent are such a trusted brand which I've used for years, everything from bottles, dummies, cups and pumps!It's great to have an upgrade to my existing breast pump. The main plus point for me is that it's a double pump. Being able to express both at the same time means you save yourself so much time and means it is over a lot quicker. I find expressing a bit of a laborious task as I like to do it privately and it can get awkward when you have children wanting to come in, or your partner needing help with the kids, etc so less time means you can be fast and carry on with your day!

This double electric breast pump arrives in a box and inside a well designed carrying bag. Each element of the pump has a nice storage area in the bag meaning you can pack everything away neatly and always know everything is together which is a great plus from other pumps I have used previously. Our previous pumps have not had a carry case like this meaning elements can easily go missing of you are not careful. It also means that you can take the pump with you anywhere in a neat and discreet fashion which is a big bonus.The pump itself is easy to attach and use and it is also nice a quiet compared to others I have used. The suction cups are comfortable and do not cause me any discomfort at all.

Breast pumping is never going to be an enjoyable or totally comfortable experience, but this pump from Philips brings it as close as possible. It's very quiet, it feels fairly soft on the skin, and it stimulates milk production well even at the lowest of the three settings. Because it's double, you get twice the amount of milk in the same amount of time, which is invaluable. My wife has been using this for about a week now for expressing for our new-ish baby, and she is finding it much easier and more comfortable to use than our previous pump (which was a single one). I'm told that it's really comfortable (well, as comfortable as it can be), and is great for initial drawing down as well as full expression. She's certainly not been as sore as she has been, which is a big plus.As well as being comfortable, it seems very well-made, and whilst there are always weak points in these things, it looks as if it will definitely last for as long as we need it (and probably beyond). For the price you would expect this to be the best money can buy; and I think it probably is. Having used two other models of electric pump over the years I can say that this is miles ahead of both. The suction is strong and fully adjustable, the massaging helps substantially, and it keeps up no matter how full the bottles are. Even at full suction this machine isn't very noisy, my much less powerful Tommee Tippee was worse.Assembly is easy, even with two sets of everything, and you get a nice carrybag for it all. I have always been a big fan of Philips Avent products as they are great quality, they last well and they are well designed.When my son was little, I used a manual breast pump which was time-consuming, a bit painful and also noisy, because the wretched thing squeaked so badly every time I squeezed the handle. My hand used to get cramped up from repeatedly squeezing the handle so many times.This wonderful invention is a whole world of difference compared to the manual pump. It’s easy, fast, comfortable, it’s double (massive time saver) and runs reasonably quietly. This pump is wonderful. Until now I have used a single pump which worked well, but took extra time to ensure all milk was collected.This double pump obviously has twice as many parts to wash and sterilise but saves pumping time. All parts do fit in my cold water steriliser.The pump itself is extremely quiet, even in comparison to the Avent single pump I have used previously. The suction cups are very comfortable on the breast and you can alter the amount of suction required. It was really straight forward to assemble using the instructions and a bit of previous Avent pump experience. I was able to sit down to express comfortably.I was really pleased to have a carry bag as part of the product,

I gave this to my niece who has just had her first baby. She is delighted with the breast pump which she says is easy to use and by far the best device of its kind.New mums pick up a gang of fellow-travellers as they go to classes etc. My niece tells me the consensus amongst her cohort seems to be that this is the Rolls Royce of breast pumps. Sure they cost a bit more than some others but they outperform all of the competition and are well worth the outlay.Very quiet in operation and comfortable to use. Easy to assemble and take apart which is important for washing and sterilising.Double pumping not only saves time but there seems to be evidence that it increases overall milk production.

What's in the box: Breast pump, Base unit, cushions, 2 bottles, various covers and tops.The device essentially consists of a base unit pump connected by a tube to the bottle/suction cup by a tube. The pump can be either mains or battery powered. Activate the pump on the base unit and gentle suction is applied to the cup. Expressed milk falls directly into the attached bottle and not back down the tube to the pump.It all seems to work well with no immediate quibbles out of the box. There are a variety of bits and bobs thrown in to try and overcome any problems encountered. All the bits that need disassembly and sterilising are easy to disassemble, sterilise and reassemble. No problems with it so far.

Avent offer a great range of excellent quality products and this one is no exception.This was easy to put together and get going on using it. I have used similar products in the past which may have been why I found it easier but I definitely had no issues.It is also easily taken apart again to wash which is a godsend when you have young children and a baby and don’t have to fight with it :)The storage bag is definitely a handy little extra to have, means I can take it out and about with me if I need to and be somewhat discreet about it.Whilst this is a little pricey I do think it is worth every penny for the ease and I get a lot more milk from using this opposed to a manual pump.

The Ultra comfort electric pump is super comfortable with soft pads that allow you to express the milk mire freely. We've tried other brands but this is so much more comfortable, just sir back and it does the works for you, most other you have to lean forward. After having a C Section this was so much more comfortable for me, and with a double pump you can express much more milk. I will be taking this to show a friend whose daughter is expecting beore Christmas and wants to feed baby herself, This is well worth the money and so comfortable, so pulling and tugging, and you can just sit and relax. Excellent product recommend to any Mum feeding themselves. Brilliant.
