Seeing as our youngest child is now 5 and my wife has long since stopped giving 'bitty', I have been forced to impregnate her in order to gain the necessary experience for this product review. I hope the lengths that I have gone to will be appreciated later this year when I am a sleep depraved shadow of the man I am today, but hopefully those middle of the night 'powder runs' will be a thing of the past, if it does it's job as advertised. Granted it will be like sleeping in an active dairy farm with a lactating Fresian ( I love her really ;o) but you have to be thankful for small mercies when it comes to rearing children! So far all I can say is that it appears to be compact, well made and gives the option of manually or electronically assisted expression, along with the pump memory feature documented in the blurb. My wife tells me that the suction seems good (wish I could say the same-but that's married life...) and more importantly comfortable, but obviously nowt is flowing yet. I will update in due course when hopefully we'll have more milk than your local supermarket. Our experience of avent products in the past has always been a good one, so I am hoping that the tradition will continue, as it seems to be from earlier reviews. It's also nice to see that they are actively promoting the BPA free feature as they were a bit slow with this in the past. The countdown has begun, tick tock.Edit 29/11/2011Well I had to endure eight hours of 'angry birds', before the ultimate 'angry bird' produced a beautiful bouncing boy earlier this month...The usual trials of breast feeding have all arisen, the worst being nipple-tip trauma from excessive chomping by the lil fella, which meant that she needed to take a break from giving him 'bitty' for a few days, substituting a bottle during this time.To keep the lactation stimulus going, she resorted to using this pump three times a day and it was an absolute God-send for this period, as there was no agonising chomping on the traumatised tip. The pump action draws the nipple in to the cup and removes the milk in a far gentler and less painful (although not completely painless) manner, than our newborn has so far managed, so my wife highly recommends it for this reason alone. The other added bonus of this pump is the memory function, which allows you to set and store your baby's suckling rate into it's memory, thus mimicking the exact suckling process, which remains there even when powered off. More importantly it gives you control over the whole process and it's all automated, so just sit back and let the machine do all the work...The included battery pack is a super little addition, taking 4 AA batteries and weighing in at 180grammes, it's great to pop in the bag and confers vital portability rather than relying on a wired plug system. The whole lot dismantles and assembles easily with the simple instructions both written and pictorial, so to be honest there really is nothing bad that my wife or I can say about this product. I just wish I could say the same about the sleepless nights and two hour feeding patterns....arghh....celibacy all the way from now on.

I just love this pump. i was using a manual one before(some other brand not avent)and i hated it. it used to sting n my hands were dead by the end of it. this one was expensive but it is soooooo worth it. i would hve paid more thn wht i paid for it. i am sure it must b a women who designed it bcoz its absolutely intelligent little piece. it remembers your rhythm n pumps accordingly,it can be used as a manual pump if needed, it can b also battery operated if wish to take it out. and all this in a compact little size. WONDERFUL!!!! you can use it one handed while leaving the other hand mayb to use the t.v remote or read a mag or surf internet.....greatttt.to b honest i was going to give it four star as i had to wait long for delivery but when i used it i felt it was worth the wait :).it does make little bit noise but i dont mind at all....you can always close the door or increase the t.v volume.AVENT is such a brilliant brand, i hve got bottles, dummies, sterliser n this pump of the same brand and i am so happy with it. being my first baby i hv decided i m sticking with this brand for many years and babies to come :)ok abt the instructions on how to use it,let me tell u the instruction manual is not very helpful, but do wht i did go on youtube n search for avent breast pump, they hve a video which is very well explained.

Philips AVENT 312/01 Electronic Breast PumpThe timing of some of Amazon's arrivals couldn't be better, with this pump being put to use straight away by my faithful female assistant who has just given birth. A previously bought Tommy Tippee manual has been graciously put to the side as this AVENT model is in a different league. I'm reliably informed by it's user that the AVENT is both comfortable to use, and reassuringly well constructed. As per anyone who hasn't used such a device before, it is a bit of an odd sensation to get used to so I'm told. We agree with the other person's review on here that it's not exactly silent in operation either - it would be nice if it was,but then I'm no engineer so I don't know what's possible. As with all AVENT devices, the packaging is spot on, the instructions are clear and easy to follow, and it all comes together to make a package that makes you realise you are using a good bit of kit. Cost may be a factor for some, but the more you use it, the more it is worth-while. Whether it will last the test of time, I cannot yet comment on.

I had been using the Tommy Tippee electric pump for 3 months which was ok but sometimes i struggled to express a decent amount so i decided to treat myself to a new one when i saw this one was reduced..... and i'm SO glad i did! Firstly, it's so much quieter so enables you to hold a conversation or watch telly whilst expressing which is obviously a bonus! I also seem to express a greater amount in the same time and its a lot more comfortable. Finally, It's easy to assemble and i like the fact you can use it as a manual pump too which is good for taking out or away on hols if needed. Only negatives for me are its a bit annoying having to set your own pumping rhythm each time and a fair bit of my precious milk seems to get stuck in the parts which seems a tragic waste!Other than that, v happy.

Having struggled with the Medela Swing pump (and worrying because it's supposed to be top of the range but just didn't seem to work for me), we finally gave up and invested in this Avent pump. What a difference - expressing is notably more comfortable & much quicker. It took me just under five minutes to express more than I'd ever managed to over the course of 30 minutes with the Medela. You can also express directly into the Avent bottles, more convenient than decanting and less to sterilise. The pump unit itself is also easier to handle, with no separate operating unit.I suspect what works for one person may not necessarily work for another in the realm of pumps & expressing milk... For me,the Avent pump is brilliant and I'm so happy and relieved we gave it a go.

My wife has been using this for occasional breastfeeding of our baby daughter (as she generally feeds her directly) and has been very pleased. Used less regularly, the issue that you can only collect from one breast at a time is less of an issue. What's great about this product is that for something that comes in quite a small box, you get battery-operated, mains-operated and hand-operated pump. You may think the hand-operated one is a little pointless (given the whole point of this is that it's electric) but it does seem to chew up batteries, so if you are taking this with you for a trip, having the manual backup to the batteries may be useful. As usual, going for an Avent product is likely to result in good customer satisfaction.

This little machine is the ideal breast pump in my opinion. Not only is it an electric pump, it can also be used manually or battery operated. This makes it the ideal pump for travelling with as well as for work or just use at home. The instructions that come with it are really easy to understand and very clear. It is not a silent machine but I felt that the noise was not too bad, and after a while it really didn't bother me at all.It is a really comfortable pump to use and I felt no discomfort when using it.Although it is quite a tough little piece of kit, it is not indestructable so please do treat it with a little care. All in all, I would have to recommend this breast pump from Philips. It ticked all the boxes for me.

Edit: I originally gave this product 2 stars after we broke it with relatively little use. I now realize this is because someone had washed the pump which breaks it (you can wash the attachments, not the pump itself). Philips is a solid brand the pump worked well enough for our first child. It wasn't amazingly fast and at the same time it still got the job done and from what I've heard about manual pumping, electric is worth the extra money. That said as the pump broke for the 2nd child, we bought amazon's #1 seller for breastpumps (Medela) and it works much better. The design, amount of milk drawn, and method all seem to be better than this product. This product is still good, that said I wish I'd gone with

This is a great pump, and though I've not tried any other brand, i haven't had any problems with it. There is an element of perserverance required, and sleep deprivation in the early weeks did make me give up initially, but trying it again at six weeks, its been great and I get 4-8 oz within 15 minutes, which is really efficient, and means I can express and go out at a moments notice, and my partner can help with feeds too. Only comment I have is that although the electric pump is fantastic, I don't use it any more, the hand held pump is so easy and efficient and isn't tiring on the hands as I thought it may be. Since this gives you both, I think it's a brilliant buy at the amazon price.

My wife was using a Philips manual pump earlier and we had already ordered the Philips VIA cup set to go with it, so this was a good value addition. It is a no-frills attached pump, no jazz, works exactly as advertised. My wife is using it every day and although she was complaining about the time taken compared to a manual pump, she is quite happy with it.Reason for 4 stars is because they didn't provide an adapter for VIA cups like they do with the manual pump. As I had a manual pump earlier, I had ordered a VIA cup set which didn't come with an adapter. So now, she is expressing into a regular bottle and then transferring contents to a VIA cup for storage.

My baby girl is a month old today and I am breastfeeding her, which hasn't always been easy. I have needed a breast pump due to suffering an infection and this is excellent. It has different settings so is not uncomfortable when pumping and I was able to easily express milk both when I was suffering from an infection and now, to enable my husband to feed the baby. It is easy to dismantle and ensemble and fits in most sterilizers. I am really pleased with this product and has made breastfeeding during those early difficult days much easier.

14.3.2011

The most surprising thing is just how comfortable this is. It has a few different settings with which you can get the pumping rhythm right for you (or if you prefer to or need to express quietly, you can do it manually). Other than that it's very simple to set up and use and for anyone breastfeeding or intending to breastfeed in the future this is ideal and will make your life so much easier when you have a hungry little baby all hours of the night and day. Whole-heartedly recommended!

At first I thought it is rubbish as I couldn't make it work. I read the instructions and watched the video but still no milk came out (although had no problems expressing by hand). After awhile I discovered (by pure coincidence) that the front rubber part that squeezes around the nipple is not tightly attached. Since then I have been very pleased with it. I can adjust the speed and it is very fast and easy. Although again every time I need to ensure all bits are properly fitted.

21.2.2011

The instructions that come with this product really good and easy to understand. It was a bit odd to use for the first time and was a little bit scared, but it was painless and was all a lot more simple than I realised. You can express into the cup/bottle, and when finished its all really easy to clean. It is a little noisy but to be honest I didnt take too much notice of it.It is definately well worth the money. And an item that will come in handy for all future children.
