Firsty, I will start by saying I really like this pack. Having an Osprey Farpoint 40 for travel (which I do like) that I use regulary, I was lead down the Osprey path when looking for a new day sack. Having used only Karrimor packs before in the past, in the days when they were made in Accrington, my new pack had a standard already set high. I still have my Jaguar S75 and Hot Route 55, they came with a life time guarantee and were bought around 1983, and are still good for their age.The trampoline back system does work, I always get a bit sweaty now when wlaking hard but the Airspeed sytem does help keep you a little cooler, especially if a breeze pops up.I have used this pack everyday now for about 5 weeks and carry it for about 5 miles in the mornings before work. It is just filled with 2l bottles of water and a rainshell to make about 8.5kg load, so not had it stuffed yet. This is what I have found so far........Me:About 5' 10" (1.78m)Around 82kg (12St 13lbs)Waist was 36" now 34-35"Chest: 42" (107cm)Age: work it out from the abovePack:Osprey Stratos 36, Gator Green, M/LLikes:Colour (I didn't want black, like all the commuter bags)Overall weight (1.49kg)Overall fit and back adjustmentThe waist belt sits nicely on my hips with good sized zipped pocketsShoulder straps, nice width, padding sits on the shoulders and comes forward/down a little past the armpitsVertical Side access zip, to get to everythingVertical zip on the front pocketTop loader, my preference for outdoors useLower compartment, good if a little smallCompression strapsLoad sits and moves with me, no slack, especially when scramblingComfortable when tightened upNo loose threads in the stitchingStraps remain tight and do not come looseRaincover but not used it yetDislikes:No attachment points on the shoulder straps for stuffI didn't but it soonerIt falls over by itself, does not self support (but then again none of my packs do)Not sure about having very light grey on the back and inside of the strapsOnly one Ice tool loop but the pack is probably not specifically designed for ice work. The bladder hose outlet is very tight, I have an insulated outer on my Camelbak hose and I cannot thread it through the hole. This can only be done by diconnecting the hose and threading through before connecting the the bladder itself. My Hazard 4 pack has a velcro patch to cover the hose as it comes out of the bag.Wish list:Attachment points on the shoulder straps for stuffSlightly larger bladder hose outletUnknown:If it is rain proof/resistant or not...it's not got wet yetLongevity...if it lasts as long as my old Karrimors do, it may well out live me!How far I can carry it when full (As a comparison: carried my Jaguar S75 with about 55lbs (25kg) for a long Dales Way (80miles) backpacking trip without problems, back pains or malfunction.Corrections:The hydration bladder pocket is internal, the European manual says it is external. Not documented:The lower compartment, below the main part but above the rain cover pocket; the fabric divider is a "half rugby ball" shaped divider that pushes up into the main compartment to create the space, or, down for more space in the upper part. About half way up the divider and on each side there is a small toggle that fits through a small loop to part hold it up in place. You can undo the toggles and drop the divider down. There is still no access from one compartment to the other, other than using the full length side zip.The lower side compression straps come with one outside the mesh pocket and one on the inside, these are designed to be unthreaded like the bottom straps and the hole in the mesh allow the straps to pass through, this gives you a choice of straps inside or outside the mesh pockets, your choice.Overall I like this pack, I realise some things I like are subjective (e.g. colour) but it is comfortable to carry. I have read some reports from others that their packs squeak, mine does not, so far.Just because I find it comfortable you may not. If you want to get one, make sure you check the Osprey web site for advice on back length, then try it on some where. If and when you buy one, take some time to load it up and play around with the adjustments till you get it fitted to you.Cheers, A

I have an old stratos day pack going strong after 9 or 10 years. (See comparison pictures.) I was excited to get this new one and man have things changed. This pack has it all. Literally if you want it this pack probably has a feature intended for it. The organized germanic everything in its place part of me loves this. The keep it simple part of me thinks maybe its too much. It has pole keeps on the shoulder straps. The "frame" is now almost totally removed from the backpack. The waterproof cover has its own pocket. (I am still confused why backpacks can't be made waterproof--but i realize most are not.) It has a lid with pockets and draw close pocket at the top.I can't decide if I like that better than my old standard backpack side to side zipper. To aid with retrieving stuff in the pack there is a side zipper that goes from near the top to the bottom to aid in getting the heavy items you stored at the bottom of the pack. I very helpful feature so you dont have to worry about stuff falling out. there is also a sleeping bag pocket though I found it a little small only one of my bags fit comfortably one additional one fit while being crammed hard in it, and a 3rd warmer primaloft one couldnt fit . (They all have stuff sacks so there was plenty of other attachment options.) There is the standard hip pocket, bungee cords on back for ice tools, and hydration pocket, clip and pass through. All those individual components aside, in the field this thing works and it is a joy to use. It practically gloats on your back. For as many concerns as I have about how the air frame will hold up since it seems almost disconnected from the pack (its definitely connected!) in actual use it makes this pack incredibly comfortable. Nothing poking your back, no constant shifting of weight, and plenty of great ventilation. When organized properly all the pockets and zippers make gear fast and efficient to get to. There are lighter and more technical rucks out there. There are even tougher ones. But this hits a sweet spot of price and comfort and usability that you will be hard pressed to find. The size is probably a little small for all but the most accomplished ultra-lighters. I would go for the 50 for overnight trips. My old one was a 24 which was perfect for me for day hikes, but was a bit too small when it came to packing one bag for me and my partner. The 36 is ideal for longer involved day hikes (especially in cold weather) or packing for 2 in in climate weather (nothing fills a bag like a couple jackets and rain gear.)While I dont know how all the features and gear keeps and pockets will hold up compared to my trusty old pack, one thing I absolutely hate is the white colored straps and back frame. I hate it for all sorts of reasons. It stands out. It doesnt match. And it gets dirty very fast. That last one is starting to take care of the problem, but its also making it look incredibly grungy.

I love my gear and am total sucker for backpacks and duffel bags. I travel regularly and therefore I’m always looking for just the right solution to meet my needs. I have used Osprey products for many years as I am a cyclist and skier who travels with gear. While most of my experience with Osprey has been with their travel packs, duffel bags and kid carriers, I’ve been eager to try their backpacking solutions as many of my friends have spoken highly of them.I got this bag for a recent camping trip to Zions National Park that didn’t require a lot of gear. This 36 Liter/2197 Cu In bag caught my attention because of its size and storing options.Fit and Finish: This bag is made from durable nylon and a tensioned mesh backpanel, which allows for airflow between your back and the bag. Zippers are durable and high quality. Most of the zippers have a flap protecting them from rain or dirt. A rain cover stowed in the bottom of the pack protects against any weather you might encounter. There are two options for adjusting the shoulder straps and once you adjust to your size the pack feels like it is an appendage. I was impressed at how comfortably it fit to my body. With vertical and horizontal compression straps the pack can be a compact, firm package.Volume/Loading/Access: You can fit a fair amount of stuff in this bag for a 1 to 2 day excursion. Once loaded, the main compartment is relatively easy to access as there is a side panel zipper access. This is such a great feature and is a requirement of mine when shopping for packs. The opening is a little restricted. I have seen better options where the zipper runs down the side and across the front of the bag. There are enough pockets on bag for small items, toiletries, cell phone, keys (key clip included), or whatever else you carry with you and don’t want loose inside the bag. The zippered hip pockets are a great place to store phones/cameras so you can access them on the go. They are large enough to store the plus-size iphones. The main compartment is open with no dividers, so you can be as organized or disorganized as you like. At the base of the pack is a zippered “sleeping bag” compartment which is separate from the main compartment. This space also works well for storing dirty shoes if you don’t want them dangling from your pack. Finally, there is a water reservoir sleeve in the main compartment and two side stretch mesh pockets for all your hydration needs. Conclusion: This is a great pack; anyone interested in purchasing should check out Ospreys website for a very detailed showing and description of this pack. The quality is high-end and I expect this bag will survive a lot of trips and abuse.

My 20 years-old 42 litres Lafuma finally died completely and it needed a replacement as I now had a large gap in my pack stable: I have a 14 L Osprey Raptor for mountain biking and light summer hikes, then an Arc Teryx Bora 60 and 80L. I did not want to buy other dedicated packs (i.e. a light one for summer, and an alpine type pack for winter), so I wanted one that could do it all, and I had a lot of requirements: enough attachments to carry xc skis, snowshoes, and Microspikes, between 35 and 42 L to carry enough warm layers and food for day winter outings, have a ventilated mesh back for summer hikes, be very lightweight, be compatible with hydration bladders, sturdy and comfortable hip belts with large pockets for snacks and cell phone, sturdy pack material, side or bottom access (my old one was only top load and I kept having to search for everything). have a rain cover or be water resistant, have some way of attaching trekking poles... I was headed to a weekend in the Adirondaks and put all my gear in my Bora60 as I did not have a day pack. I stopped on the way to the mountains and picked the Statos and I am so glad I did: it ticked all the boxes and with all the same gear in it, it really felt like the weight dropped by 30-50% (to be fair the bora 60 is a heavier pack)! The trekking pole stow and go is really handy and works well. There are a bunch of small details that are great about this pack - key clip holders inside the top part are easy to use, there are holes in the side pockets to have the compression straps run inside or outside of the pocket. IMPROVEMENTS: It would be nice if the pack came with a magnet to attach the hose from an Osprey hydration bladder. I have only used the pack for 3 days and I can see that everything white will be an ugly and dirty brownish color in a few years; grey would have been more practical. I would have liked the bottom compression straps to clip instead of being inserts.

When I was looking for a pack, I knew I wanted a multi-purpose bag that would work for unpredictable day hikes, travel, and longer, lightweight overnighters. This pack fits each of these categories so well: the body cinches down on day hikes and doesn't flop around, fits easily in a (larger) overhead bin on a plane, and have used during warm overnight backpacking trips. It's not the lightest pack around, but what you get in return in hearty fabric. This pack is tough. Had to bushwhack through a section of trail and barely a scratch was left on the pack, save for a snag on the water bottle holders. The integrated raincover is great (and removable!) and fits over this pack and over any gear you might have stowed externally.I've carried around 30lbs comfortably, and the suspension keeps everything nice and centered over my hips. This is a great pack. However, there are two things that would take this pack to a perfect 5-star to me. 1) Larger water bottle pockets and 2) a stretch mesh external pocket. I can barely fit a standard nalgene in the side pockets, the elastic up top is cinched almost flush with the pack and does not expand much at all. I use these primarily now for tent poles and maybe a slim water bottle. This would be such an easy fix. And another easy fix would be to remove the silly front zipper. This compartment does not get much use from me, besides holding a map. The zipper is chunky, the fabric seems chunkier here as well, and the center position makes putting anything else inside a chore. Unlike many of their other popular packs (the Exos and Atmos come to mind) that have this FANTASTIC strechy mesh that doubles as a perfect stash pocket surrounding the front, this pack lacks it. With this fix, a puffy, hat and gloves, and rain jacket are immediately removed from the main compartment to the outside, making this a serviceable long-distance pack.

My husband & I are occasional backpackers. We are planning a trek thru Wales so I have already purchased the Osprey Sirrus 36 (the female version of this Stratos 36). My husband will be using this pack, Stratos 36. We have been testing them for the past week. We loaded them up with the items/weight we plan to take & have been hiking/walking around the neighborhood & on hiking trails. They are very comfortable & we both feel confident they will work great for our trip.-Perfect for overnight backpacking trips – plenty of room.-Lots of ventilation – good separation between the pack & the mesh back support. Although you lose a little space in the pack because it curves in so large bulky items may be a problem for some people. We have no problems with our cargo.-Built in rain cover that actually fits & it works – we tested it in a light rain. This will be very important for our trip to Wales so we feel good about that.-Trekking pole loops – These are very handy once you get the hang of putting the poles in/out. They are in a good position.-Sleeping bag compartment – We won’t require this on our trip since we will hike from inn to inn but we tested our backpacking sleeping bags & they fit. It’s a tight fit, but it works fine.-Lots of compartments for organization & quick access. Being organized is really important. It also helps to do what we are doing - hiking with cargo so you can practice getting things in/out of your pack quickly & figuring out what is the best place to stash things in the pack for your style/needs.**Make sure to measure your torso length (NOT your height) so that you get the right size for your body. The right size pack makes a very big difference in comfort/back pain. Go online for videos about the correct way to fit a backpack.

I haven't actually had a chance for a proper hike in this yet, but first impressions are great. I have been looking for a pack that will be just the right size for a day pack, give me the hammock style suspension off my back so it stays aired but doesn't skimp on the quality padding and access pockets etc. This seems to be it. Packed it and really comfortable. Adjustable, great side access to the main compartment so you don't have to keep lifting the flap. Osprey packs are always great, but this feels like it is going to be my next favourite. I always like companies that go the extra mile for service. When I got this my Cairn Terrier gnawed the main buckle, I contacted Osprey and they replaced! In the same colour, which they said they may not be able to do. Brilliant after care. Love it. Great price for the quality.

Took this backpack on latter part of South Downs way in wind and rain! Took 3 days (minimal) change of clothes and spare trainers plus inner fleece and and lightweight jumper together with rainwear..and minimal wash kit and first aid kit plus water bottle. Enough compartments to store used clothes Clean clothes and rainwear separately. 2 sizes bought M/L Fitted well I am 5ft 9in.Very comfortable.Only beef was that pockets in the waist strap were not fully waterproof so had wad of damp notes at day end. Included waterproof cover effective. Wraps dried out quickly. Air mesh system worked well! Very good quality build with enough straps to add extras(e.g. Sleeping roll/ waking stick)outside but not big enough for camping equipment. Difficult to find at a discount....but for me worth the extra.

This is a super backpack, plenty of room for big loads and has compression straps to take up the slack when only partially filled. The sprung 'trampoline' back is a godsend as I always end up with a sweaty back when wearing a backpack but this has solved that problem for me. Sure, this is expensive but the price is justified by the quality and features of the product. Plenty of big pockets with decent zippers and the integrated rain cover is a natty feature. The Osprey no-quibble lifetime guarantee is a reassurance to have as well. I did find that 36L is really spacious, maybe too much for a day hike so I bit the bullet and also bought a 26L Stratos (in blue)as they had a massive 30% discount on Amazon a few weeks back so that I have a decent backpack for whatever the situation.

I've only used this a couple of times and so far am very impressed with it. It replaced a very cheap (in comparison) rucksack that, to me, did the trick until I tested out my friends Alpine Low rucksack with vented back and it blew me away. I tried on the equivalent Alpine Low but the Osprey just felt a bit more comfortable. Strangely the strap across the mid rift was thicker and that tipped the balance.I'm only day hiking currently but the configuration of the pockets and zips works a treat for me. Everything seems have been well thought through. As a bonus, it also has a raincover - although not sure why this should be a surprise and that others don't include it - even Osprey. But it means i don't need to fork out more money.Anyway, I'm very happy with the purchase

There are times in life when you get something and wonder what on earth you did before having it - this backpack was one of those. I've done quite a bit of hiking including 3 caminos de Santiago so you get to really experience your gear. My old backpack (a Berghaus) had served me well but at 65L it had always been too big and you tend to fill that space; so I decided to buy this for weekends.Even after months of use every time I put it on I'm amazed by how comfortable it is and the little details it has like the loops on the zips. Its so good that I'm going to use it for my next Camino de Santiago despite been a little over half the size of my old pack.

7.8.2017

I bought the Stratos 36 to replace a well-worn and retired 1st generation Exos 34. Like my old Exos this pack is a tad oversized for most of my gallivants. However, the extra room is perfect when I'm carrying camera gear (extra lenses, tripod, etc.) or I'm hiking to a remote location for a day of fly fishing. The suspension handles the occasional 25-pound load just fine. Note: I just returned from a guided day-hiking tour of Glacier National Park. We had three guides and 25 clients. Osprey packs abounded in the group. One of the guides, the only woman, was carrying a Sirrus 36. Over half of the clients were carrying various Osprey day packs.

14.5.2019

I purchased a S/M to use on the Camino Francés (St Jean to Santiago) at a later date.Having dutifully made my lists of must haves and leaving out the might needs and following two test loads it all fits in, just!I may be able to gain a little extra room (depending on the time of year) by only using a sleeping bag liner instead of a full season 1 bag, which fits inside a bottom compartment of the rucksack and would massively increase the space available thereby making it easily large enough.Considering the excellent build quality, very light weight and load space; I believe that this is probably the best rucksack I could have chosen.

10.11.2017

I just wrapped up a long walk from Barcelona, Spain to the start point of the Camino de Santiago in France. There's enough to worry about on such a trek and prior experience has taught me that if you're thinking about your pack, you have the wrong pack. Not once did I ever second guess, fret and wonder about the Stratos 36. It rode like a dream. As with my other Ospreys, it's built well and held up without a single issue. But the on-trail vote seemed to favor Ospreys, too: my guess is at least half of all hikers shouldered an Osprey. That's probably all you need to know.

20.11.2017

We tested it during a 2 day in rain and snow. Its variable fitting method to personally adjust your backpack to your back, taking into account the weight, makes this backpack very comfortable to wear. The distance between your back and the backpack provides sufficient ventilation. The hydration system easily allows a water bag of 1.5 L. The included rain cover can be easily and quickly pulled over the backpack, is spacious enough and 100% waterproof. Storage options for material that you need to handle quickly are well provided. This is a topper for his prize
