New to backpacking, but as a beginner I find this bag great for the money spent. I like the adjustable straps that connect the top of the pack to the arm straps that help keep the center of gravity over your hips, and the fact there are two sets of them. I keep mine on the lower set and it works great. Also the adjustable rungs on the side of the pack that help you adjust to torso size. The airspeed back panel I also like a lot because it seems to help with me sweating all over the pack. For packability the main compartment is able to hold pretty much everything I have. I'm using this for long section hikes. Just took it out for 100 miles and I'm going to go back out there and attempt another 200-300 miles. As far as for inclement weather,I have yet to really test it outside of a drizzle. It does have the built in rain cover to the bag. For many types of backpacks people say that no matter what your stuff will get wet even with the rain cover attachment (not specifically just for this bag, for any bag). I have a contractor bag in the backpack that I keep essentials in (like sleep system) as an added protection to the rain. I also use dry bags and keep stuff like electronics and med supplies in ziplock bags. Some features I am not a fan of:The side pockets. I lost my tent poles unbeknownst to me due to them falling out of the side pockets. I've also lost a couple of other items from the side pockets. I now only use them for my water bottles, 1l smartwater bottles. I probably will not store anything in those side pockets other than that. The hip belt pockets I find are difficult to use. When I have the pack strapped to me, I can open the hip belt pockets with one hand, however I need two hands to close them. So i have to awkwardly reach my arm across my body to pull the zipper shut, while i use my other hand to hold the actual pocket to allow the zipper to close. This involves me having to stop walking, and It is just inconvenient since I imagined using these pockets on the go.Finally the brain of the bag i'm not a fan of either. It is not removable so it won't function as a day pack. The zipper to open it is also way too narrow. You really have to jam your hand in their to pack stuff in the brain. If you have one you will see that the back part of the brain is very roomy and you can stuff some more bulky things in here, but you have to jam it through the small opening to get it in there. As a final word I would recommend this bag for a lower cost entry to backpacking. I'm planning on using this for a while, and upgraded whenever I have a more solid feel for what I'm looking for in a bag after I gain more hiking and backpacking experience. The one reason that made my decision final to buy this was the Osprey name, and the warranties and guarantees they have on their products. Looking forward to many more miles with this.

This (for me atleast) is a whole new chapter in rucksacks. For somebody used to using traditional style rucksacks (British Army Bergen, Munro daysack, north face spire rucksack etc), I was not until recently familiar with the air vent type back system. About a year ago I purchased a Lowe alpine 40litre rucksack with the air vent bad system. It was a huge step forward for me in terms of comfort and breath ability and somehow it seemed to make the rucksack feel much lighter. The issue I had was that the 40litre rucksack was not big enough for all but the most minimal of wild camps, and conversely the tardis like Bergen was uncomfortable, heavy, and not particularly adjustable...Enter the osprey rook 65.I took a punt on it when I saw it for around £90 which is less than I think I’ve ever seen any osprey rucksack. Probably one of the finest makes in the rucksack market. The air mesh back system is hands down the best I have ever used, and the adjustability of the back system is something I have never seen before and truly brilliant. Seriously, go watch a YouTube review of the bag where they explain how the back system adjusts. It’s fantastic. It seems in the past few years that rucksack design has moved on quite considerably, and I have not kept up with the huge leap forward in rucksack design. The Osprey Rook is actually marketed as their entry level large capacity rucksack and therefore the cheapest in their range. Again I find this astounding as it is outstanding in every way.I intend to use the rucksack for wild camps where I don’t need to try and cram everything in, and also for winter day walks where I want to carry a little extra. It sinches down relatively small to so you could use it as a daysack if needed although it’s not ideal for that as it’s a bit big.For me this is hands down the best rucksack I’ve ever tried, and having bought it on a whim I feel very lucky that my punt has paid off. If you need a medium to large rucksack for overnighters and your focus is on value, durability, and fit, then this is probably the best rucksack available to suit your needs. In summary, get one.

I bought this rucksack to take on a 3 day camping hike and it was great. It has a good degree of adjustability on the straps, the lower compartment is useful - I used it that way and will keep doing so. The colour is very nice and the bag is clearly very durable. My back never got sweaty and I like the suspension meshing. The minor niggles that detract from the bag are (in my view - and I am nit-picking here): the belt side pockets are a little too far behind you - probably fine if you have decent flexibility but I found it slightly problematic, although better when they are fuller; the top pocket's opening is really quite narrow - the zip would probably be better in a different orientation, fine for stuffing squashy items in but you won't get anything big in there; there is no opening on the front so you are always going to have to unclip the main lid to get at stuff; and you can bend the frame if you're not careful - it will bend back but just be aware. Also, if you take the matching Osprey Hydraulics hydration pack, be aware that this will eat into the room in the bag and you end up packing stuff more to the sides of the bag because of the bulge in the middle. That being said, the hydration pack integrates extremely well with the bag itself. Despite the niggles, it is very comfortable, durable and I'm pleased with the purchase. I carried 15kg in it and the 65L version still had a fair bit more room in it

You can't beat the price for this great pack. As with all Osprey products, they are quality built and have a fantastic warranty. I was easily able to carry all my gear for a multi-day hike, and it was comfortable to do so. There is plenty of room inside the pack, although I wish it had an exterior expandable mesh like my old Talon did so I could shove a jacket or spare shirt in there without having to take up space in the main compartment. I did purchase a separate Osprey that attaches to the Rook and gives me some extra space, and also gives me a day hike pack to use from a basecamp. This pack fits nicely on the shoulders and the hip belt is comfortable even when cinched down. The larger flip top compartment lets me store a good amount of stuff up top. My sleeping bag fits inside the pack along with my tent, stakes and poles, and my Jetboil. Leaves plenty of room for food, my 3L bladder, some extra clothing, some comfort items, etc. It starts to push the upper limits of storage if you have to pack for a multi day and need some extra layers, so be cautious of the volume of your jackets and overshirts. The separate day pack I got will easily handle a first aid kit, small light source and other miscellaneous items. Overall, the pack is well made, fits comfortably, and works great on the trail.

While this is a heavy pack at 3.3lbs, it is very rugged and made to last. The buckles are made incredibly well and you will never have to worry about them breaking or failing like you will hear about with other packs. The air speed suspension is great at ensuring your back remains cool and the side pockets are very convenient. while this pack is rated to hold 30-40 lbs, i have loaded it to 55lbs no problem. Not very comfortable with that much weight but doable. I have since then gotten the base weight down to 25lbs and this pack makes that weight feel non existent because of how the weight is distributed. I am a beginner to backpacking and this pack is an undeniable value for the minimalists.great adjustment system which helps the pack fit most anyone like a glove and a down right gorgeous pack. I would highly recommend this pack to anyone who is simple and keeps it simple (ultra lite backpackers). I can fit everything i have in this pack incredibly organized and i could not be any happier.

Cons: The only negative thing I can find with this back is that the side straps do not an opening buckle they are just adjustable straps.Pros: Very lightweight and durable. This bag is a true work horse and the stitching is very strong. The internal frame keeps the back off your back allowing for great circulation.I am an avid bush crafter, camper, hunter and recreational mountaineer. I spend a lot of time in wilderness and this bag is perfect size for 1-3 day hikes. I have a small 6 can cooler in the bottom portion and a 4 L water bladder in the back. The bag is recommended for about a 50lbs or less load baring. I can honestly work my equipment hard. When it comes to outdoor gear don't go cheap buy something that is going to last and this bag is worth the money.

From Osprey, one of the more famous pack manufacturers on the planet, the Rook 65 is what you would expect. It is very high quality and quite pleasant to look at. It is adjustable and fits even my odd shaped body quite well. At 65 liters, it will hold enough gear for a major thru hike and carry the load very comfortably. It is billed as an entry-level back pack, but honestly, I would have no problem tackling the Appalachian Trail with it. If I had one thing to change about it, it is that I would extend the hip pouches a bit so they would fit better around my fat hips. (They are not adjustable). But perhaps if I hike more often, I will lose weight and conform to the pack.:)Definitely recommend this pack.

The problem with most rucsacs is that when they are adjusted to suit someone under 165cm, the internal frame prevents the head from being tilted back to look up, with only looking straight ahead being about as far as their head will tilt backwards. This rucsac has a V shaped frame section at the back of the head which does allow the head to tilt back. It also has other nice touches that are missing from far too many rucsacs, like tabs for straps on the top that will hold a bulky rolled up foam sleeping mat. But the V shaped section at the back of the head is the one feature that makes it a no brainer for anyone under 165 cm.Overall really nice attention to functionality rather than cosmetic nonsense.

I am an office jockey, living the 21st century sedentary lifestyle. I am about 3 pounds overweight. I did my first 2 night backpacking trip in the Hispaniola hinterlands. A technical hike into a mountain valley on the way in and on the way out. Average elevation of 8,200 feet, no roads, semi-marked paths, dense highland tropical mountain forest, many breakers, ravines and fallen logs, cold, wet, humid conditions. This pack went above and beyond my expectations. No chafing, no bruises, no pain, no stiffness. The pack does its job of transferring most weight to my thighs and waist. No wonder Osprey is one of the best value for money hiking and camping brands out there.

Have only use it once but woah this thing is insanely good for the price. I've only been backpacking for a few years and am still young, but I'm a gear head and do my research. Great pack for a great price. Holds plenty for a 2 or 3 night trip especially If you know how to pack a pack! The mesh back is amazing. Back still sweats but keeps SO cool with that air flow. Missing a star because of lack of adjustablity or just general width of shoulder straps. I have broad shoulders and these straps cut right into my traps and I've never been so sore in my neck. Obviously it's a very budget pack but it still hurts and I can't do anything but suffer.

At first i wasnt sure about spending so much on a backpack. My conclusion is its worth every penny. This Osprey 65l is well built, well designed and has lots of features. I was a little worried about the additional weight compared to my previous bag however if the bag is fitted well it will transfer the weight to your hips and down to your legs. This makes the pack feel lighter which is great. The airspace thing works well. I like the well designed inside pocket and deep side pockets. Only down falls for me are the hip belt pockets are a little far back for my liking. Overall a great pack and recommended at this price point.

Amazing bag, plenty of room and the most comfortably fitted bag I have owned, I suffer with a bad lower back especially after carrying a heavy back pack but this is great for taking the weight off it. More than enough strap length on the weight distribution straps at the top of the back pack which is important as some others I tried I tighten all the way and it isn't enough for me. The hip belt Is comfy and doesn't rub at all, the pockets in them are big too. But, it takes 2 hands to close the zips on them. I love the bag I'm really happy with it

This back is amazing for the price. For me at least, the fit was awesome, and the suspension distributes weight really well. It is really light! Four stars vs 5 for two reasons: The top compartment (not removable) is a bit difficult to access, and the pack is hard to set upright due to the shape of the bottom of the pack. I love it and would recommend if a higher end osprey pack is out of your budget. Like it was for me.

So pleased I bought this...... I have tried other brands, which are generally 1kg heavier, and just couldn't get a comfortable fit. This Osprey works for me..... Adjustable, vented so that there is a gap between your back and the rucksack itself, lightweight and superbly manufactured. I can see why they are so highly rated.

Bought for our sons DofE expedition after a bad experience with a Vango product. The Osprey fitted all his gear comfortably including attaching a tent via the bottom straps. It's light and adjusts well to fit on the back/waist. Overall a very good product, including for teenagers doing their Duke of Edinburgh.
